Why is there no ICS ROM for epic touch? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Google opened the source. I believe Samsung did as well. There's a ROM for international s2 working with TW is there something i'm missing? Also, why is google allowing TW on ICS I thought the purpose of ICS was to eliminate having to wait for manufacturer/carrier updates and consolidate phones and tablets to the one OS to maintain and innovate.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App

The Google's Android Alliance is dead. I believe that since manufacturer's are already going back on their word, they're still changing things up a bit. Besides, who would get an HTC if it ran the same software as Samsung's phones? (Or vice versa). The unique feel between all of these devices are marked by their UI, otherwise the phone with the best hardware will dominate all. (although I wouldn't mind an AOSP ICS rom for ourselves.)

More money could be invested in the hardware instead of cutting corners to save money for the programming. The net result would increase the lead over iPhone users. Which gives us better hardware, immediate updates, and more software as app Sellers would favor writing for Android. Just my 2 cents.

The Nexus builds are nice but they aren't perfect. I use it as my daily on my NS4G but the battery life isn't the greatest. The devs probably decided to just wait for the official since we are supposedly going to be one of the next phones to get it. They could do it but there would be no 4g and Google quietly pulled the OTA update temporarily due to battery life issues. The gapps tax my battery big time..especially Google+. We will get our turn. In the meantime, try one of the themes with ADW EX or Go Launcher and you can have the look

No official build yet.(period)
I just want you all to know that there is no official build at all for this rom yet. No beta at least. Sprint doesn't have it yet either. Sprint isn't testing the rom nor has Samsung sent them the rom. So, don't expect the update in the next month.
The way is works is Samsung sends it to Sprint. Sprint test it and Samsung fixes any issues. Sprint test it again and when they find no issues it gets sent to the consumer. Sprint doesn't even have it yet to test it.
And, there are people working on making a non official build but it doesn't work great yet. It is missing a lot of key features. I am thinking we might see some usable roms at the end of the month.
Sprint is currently fixing the ICS for the Nexus S. When that is complete they will start on the Epic. You might see that update in 2 weeks. The epic should be done in 6-8 weeks(this is a early guess, I will know more in 3 weeks).

Development is horrible for the epic touch on xda because every single thread, regardless of the original post, turns into a flame war. I have been told by two devs that this is the reason they stopped developing for the epic touch on xda.

Where is miui & cm7?

Coming from the og evo to this makes me sad ,theres is very little roms or tweaks for this device and most have more problems than the stock does.Wish i could port roms myself but i dont even know where to start.

-working sense 3.0 or 3.5 rom
I already know 3 people that have already sold this phone cause of los and countless other minor annoying issuses but mainly no real dev support or even a sign of anything good coming any time soon.i know these things take time but this phone has the worst reception of any sprint phone i have owned to date so its hard to stay positive.Me my wife and 2 other ppl i know have all the same issues so i know its not my handset and we live in nyc where service was great before this phone.im doing my best to hang in here and not go back to my evo.I love everything about my gs2 with exception of cell reception and 3g data speeds and 4g is truly pointless.Anyone know any updates on my wishes?
Can't put a sense rom on this device and Miui is based off CM7. The CM team will be getting our device shortly (if they don't have it already). And Teamwin now has an Epic Touch and they're working on their recovery for it. Samsung cdma devices always make slower progress with development. People either have to be patient or move on.

Almost 2 months (6+ weeks if I recall) until we had CM6 RC1...
...Spoiled EVO4G scener who got in well after release I'd wager.
I had that phone on release day rooted in the RadioShack parking lot and aside from the millions of Fresh based sense roms (or themes, really) until AOSP came around the only interesting things were a smattering of cool kernels (to break the FPS cap, OC, UV, HAVS, etc)...and AOSP took almost 2 months.
OP, If you want it hack it or shut up.
EDIT: I don't mean to come off like a ****, but, a lot of us got very spoiled by the EVO4G scene...that phone was an amazing exception IRT development. I've never seen any phone accrue so much development results in such a short amount of time. I have been phone hopping ever since selling my EVO4G in June and came to terms with that a long time ago. The EVO3D is closer, but still nowhere close. There are millions of (mostly theme-based) ROMS...CM7 is coming along I hear, MIUI as well. I hated that phone, but, if you like Sense I don't know why you would get anything but an HTC. If I get an HTC and hate sense I know eventually I will be able to take it off, but, the opposite isn't anything I would bet on.
You should sell your epic touch and get a ppc6700... Just saying.

25th July 2010, 11:59 PM is when it was originally posted for the Evo. So 2 months, considering the Evo released on June 4th, 2010.
This phone has been out for 6 weeks! I'll go out on a limb here and say your expectations are out of whack dude. And no dev support? I'm sure the guys that have compiled really good kernels and ROMs already really appreciate that. I personally love slaps upside the face. I guess the guys that dev for Android find a way to block out all the BS and whiners and continue to push on for the greater good. I really don't know how they do it.
The funny thing is that the reason the EVO got so much support was it was hands down the best phone at the time.
Now Sprint has choices and with choices means less support on each device.
Just my opinion.
Once someone creates an AOSP kernel, it would help the develoment of CM7, CM9 and MUIMs.
The reason why OG EVO was so popular, because it was given to all the developers during last year Google IO. All the devs had a phone to develop on.
If you want to help, you should on work creating an AOSP kernel, its not a very easy task.

Our excitement should be VERY tempered. OG Epic users went through the same thing when GB was leaked for the i9000 (the int'l galaxy s). This time the leak is for the i9100 (the int'l galaxy s 2). I would not anticipate it will be of much use for us.

pardon my ignorance but the addition of the LED, the larger screen (even the ATT version has a different size screen and the epic is certainly larger than the international version) and the processor also varies doesn't it? Do those differences not make difference?

So I was at Sprint the other day..

I was at Sprint the other day and I was talking with one of the repair technicians (I was exchanging my defective Epic Touch). He said some things that I haven't heard anywhere else. I asked about an ICS release date for the Epic Touch and he said some strange things. He was saying that Samsung may release ICS as an optional upgrade (not over the air). He said that consumers love Touchwiz too much and don't want the upgrade because ICS is too big of a UI change. Sounds like BS to me...

Actually this sounds very reasonable. For those of us here who update their ROM's frequently it's a non-issue. But the ICS upgrade would probably require the casual user to start over from scratch. I'm sure most of my family would just hate to reinstall and reconfigure their apps and other aspects of their phones.
This is true logically the ui changes are a lot so many people will wantnto leepnit the same

I don't know if this is much of an answer but having used a kang of cm9 on a galaxy tab and 2 ics alphason my evo 3d I can say I didn't run into any that had major issues. Titanium works fine as did several launchers, news/readers, and games. I've got about 250 apps and none jump to mind that didn't work. I'm guessing that since the sdk was released a while back and several devices have alphas released devs have been able to code their apps for ics.
Thanks!

That actually might not be bs. You people obviously didn't own the original Moment when it came out. It came with eclair and you couldn't update it to froyo over the air. You had to download an installation from sprint and it did a complete wipe. It was the only way to upgrade. ICS changes the framework of the ROM. It has a lot of major changes of how the OS works. It wouldn't surprise me if this would be the same again.

Imagine the call center being flooded with noobs calling pissed off that they lost all their apps and saved information because of an OTA update. I agree sprint would be better off offering the update online.
I can tell you with the way sprint is about releasing information to its Agents and techs, The scene usually knows more then us about Updates and releases. We usually are not notified about releases until they happen. Any agent or store tech who says otherwise is mostly speaking out of their ass or is relaying info themselves found from sites like this. Wanna know how much warning we officially had on the iphone? They day we started preorders we had customers telling my training agents over the phone that we had it before we even had notification in our system for about an hour. Occasionally there are some managers in some deep dept's in tech who can provide info like when we got a estimated date on that one release to fix the LOS issue. But thats rare.

First, 'ui changes'. False. We have leaked builds of ics touchwiz already. Major UI overhaul? I think not. Optional? Doubt it. Ics adds features just like gb did. Our phones are capable of handling the new software no problem and without this 'ui overhaul' people might not want, there is no reason it won't be given out to everyone. Even if it were to be optional, the employee that told the op the reason why it might be optional, that its big and so different, cannot be facts. Your post stating the reason for an online download only requiring a wipe is the only potential fact I've read in this thread =P
Other then the post stating tw ics looks just like gingerbread.

Does anyone know if CM9 will have 4G for us in the beginning? Or will we have to wait. If they do have it for us, I would rather have CM9 than the Sprint update. The option of simply staying rooted without going through hoops, sounds good to me.
I imagine we will have to wait, but you have to admit, it would be wicked!
I was talking about how an OS written, not how it looks. That is the only reason I could think for that kind of install and a wipe. You are correct the UI is very similar. Even without Touchwiz not much changes, just added features. Like my momma said. It whats on the inside that counts.

About The Update

In most the website everyone has been reporting the Epic 4g Touch will get updated tomorrow and they show Android Beam coming as part of the update but our phone doesnt have NFC so is this a mistake
Yeah, it's a mistake, no NFC on our phone unfortunately.
Jump into camera from lockscreen should be another error because that is not available on FF18 leak. If now if available then the FF18 is different from leak and many are very wrong that for some fixes and additions it need a new rdf
I believe the OTA will be different from the leak also to some minor changes there is no always need for a complete new build number just saying.
Lol sprint is like "these are all the awesome enhancements you would have of we didn't jack it up before giving it to you."
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
I sure hope the ota is different (read: less bugs) than the ff18 leak. Every time I flash it, in less than 24 hours I'm going back to EL29 because 18 pisses me off too much. Mainly with its behavior with apps. Or should I say the app's behavior with ics.
its 11:44 here in atlanta... 17min togo!!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
I think the OTA will be different. Every hated EL29 and bashed it before it went official. Now we all run it on our phones Lol....I'm sure in many ways it WILL be different.
It's actually quite funny. That's the big talk now on every forum posting that the source is out. Android Beam!
Yet at some point, a Sprint PR guy obviously doesn't know his phones so doesnt realize there is no NFC chip to work with on the phone.
But then again, only Sprint Reps are supposed to see that release sheet.
It's def legit, it was laying on my desk when I got to work. Just really bad phone knowledge.
Official discussion will be here. Thank you. :highfive:

IMO, It really doesn't matter! I have used JB and ICS on my phone, and other than Google Now, I don't see the need to update to JB.
I look at it like this... the standard consumer is not rooted. The OEM and carrier have to smooth out bugs, and make the transition from ICS -> JB a seemless integration. This makes for a better customer experience.
Thats the business man... why release a sub par product and have thousands of support tickets for small minor issues.
From your sig, you're running JB already.
Pretty depressing if you ask me. God if the new nexus phone wasn't being made by LG I'd probably be all over that thing at this point.

Telus' S3 will get JB before the end of November, so I'm thinking we should be very close by.
Full application of project butter in an official release of jb will be worth it. Only reason my nexus is still stock is that the only rom on the s3 that comes close to matching its fluidity, for me at least, is tasks aokp. It's night, and day. Slow rollouts of software are just one of those burdens of this era in development. Fortunately, the software is beginning to be more, and more worth it. Someday you'll lecture your grandkids on how we didn't have all this fancy "cognitive request firmware updates, and 5tb/second data speeds" lol

Because when there is a bug in CM, they can go *shrug*, we'll add it to the known issues list, like the bluetooth audio not working right. When there is a bug in a carrier supplied ROM, think of all the people that are going to want to call AT&T and be like 'Hey this isn't working, FIX IT!'. That costs money to pay the customer service people and it costs money from a PR point of view.
The carriers strive to make things as bug free as possible (which, is laughable considering some of the updates some carriers have pushed out, or even the state of a phone at release *cough*G2x*cough*). If they don't do super extensive testing on everything BEFORE the release, they're going to have to do the same testing AFTER the release, but after it costs them money in customer service and PR image.
It sucks that another manufacturer/carrier is delaying the update. Do we buy a phone on the promise/hope we will see the next update? I don't. "Why am I not getting update XX" seems to be a common complaint. I came from the Atrix 2. Motorola promissed ICS and an unlockable bootloader. The phone is now borderline if not already end of life with At&t and is just getting the ICS update and still a locked bootloader. I bought my GSIII with the thought "cool I will get JB" but didn't care when. With all of the leaks available, if you want JB, you can get it. Seeing some of the bugs in the leaks, do you really want that to be your update? If you got the update and had these bugs, thered posts of "how could they release this buggy version?" Don't get me wrong, I would like to see manufactures and carriers stand by their word, but I realize there are more important things to worry about than why my update is delayed or not getting it. If you want a phone that guarantees you'll see an update, get a ,cough cough, Iphone. Not all features may work but hey, you'll get your update. My one and a half cents and a THANKS to the hard working devs that bring us these leaks and roms (FOR FREE) to satisfy our need to update. YOU GUYS ROCK!
This phone is awesome straight out of the box. I'm just a flash junkie and I love new shiny stuff. I wonder if there's a support group for flash addicts?
I dont understand why carriers have to tweak the software when samsung already does it. I dont think carriers change the software that much that it takes so long. Someone please enlighten me

Its not the OS they are changing, it takes them this long to make their BS bloatware work.

Well and doing carrier certification. I think that's more of what ends up taking a long time than updating any carrier add-on software.
Sprint is receiving their OTA to JB starting today. So I'm sure we're not too far behind.

this sucks but never a problem with custom roms and Samsung is the easiest to update.
I'm new to Android, so maybe that makes me naive. But, I'd like to bring up a few points:
1) How do you know JB for the AT&T GS3 is delayed until 2013? No one has given a release date. Heck, it might be 2014 or 2015. It's misleading to post a title like that.
2) "Coming months:" this ambiguity goes both ways. Sprint released their GS3 JB OTA update today.
3) AT&T is taking long to update their bloatware?! There are three stupid apps: AT&T Hotspots, AT&T Messages, and AT&T Navigator. AND AT&T's already released the Note 2, which comes with Jelly Bean. Thus, these apps have already been updated to work with Jelly Bean!
The holdup on AT&T's part is something else...
