Just look at the specifications on the htc website.... there you'll find the answer.
Honestly with a bit of search you could have answered this yourself but since I'm not the worst person here I'm gonna explain...
The desire has out of the box tethering, you simply plug the charger/usb cable to the desire and put the other end in the laptop.
By doing that an option screen appears as you pull down the notification bar.
With the following options:
1. Charge only
2. Htc Sync
3. Diskdrive
4. Share your mobile connection (could be named different. I'm dutch so my desires settings are dutch.)
Selecting number 4 will install a modem on your pc and then your able to internet through your desire.

Thanks
sorry for being so irritatingly lazy ....
I will do better the next time
Promise i will
....
If you install PDANet, you can tether via Bluetooth. It appears to be dial up networking (which it isn't in reality) rather than a PAN, but it does work ok.

Dave

When i try to do this it tries to load the drivers which it cant find and so no connection for me.
i'm on xp
You need to install HTC Sync, which should have come on the SD card supplied with your phone.
You can also download the latest version from HTC.com

Hello
I am in need of a way to get internet to my phone through the USB-cable from the computer. Is there any way to do this? In either linux or windows... I will be without wireless internet for some time and I would like to try to avoid big data fees on my phone while staying at home...
A little edit to hopefully simplify what I'm looking for: Reverse tethering
Hey there,
Also I am looking for the same thing. It was one of very little good properties of my old win.mobile phones.
Y think the new HD roms have it, try and flash this rom, did not tried but the option appears in settings, i used this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=789830
hey there,
i was searching the web and the forum though couldnt find any issues for connecting the desire z via usb to ubuntu (10.04 for me). however, it doesnt work with my DZ. i bought an addition micro-usb-connector (htc) and the phone does only charge and not ask, what kind of connection i want.
once, i read (and experienced) that you have to connect the usb to the back usb-ports (not the front ones) to get it working - that was with my desktop pc. now, using my laptop, the connection (mounting the sd, tethering or whatever) wont work on neither of the laptop's usb-ports...
so maybe there are two questions/issues:
does anyone have similar issues or maybe no problem with connecting the phone to
1) a laptop?
2) ubuntu 10.04?
thanks for your anwsers!
This might be nothing to do with it, but I found that I couldn't use adb with my phone when I was using a third-party USB cable, even though it sync'd (HTC Sync) fine. This was using XP. When I went back to the original HTC cable, adb worked fine.
Hi there,
I have a laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) and everything works fine here. If i connect my DZ with my laptop a menu appears on the DZ asking if i want to charge only, use as disk drive, HTC sync, USB tethering and internet passthrough. I havent tried HTC sync but the rest works fine. I can even synchronize my music with Rythmbox or Banshee. So what i'm saying is that it should work out of the box.
My DZ is stock European edition, no root or s-off yet.
I suggest you first look in the settings of your DZ and look for "Connect to PC". There you should see the settings for the default connection and a "ask me" option. (My default is charge only and "ask me" is turned on). If this doesn't work maybe you can test your device on another computer to see if the menu does appear when you connect your phone.
Thanks for your replies.

I was trying to get adb working but ended up in getting an no-permission-error. Couldn't figure out the problem...

My DZ is also European, standard stock Rom,nothing done (yet). I checked the settings you mentioned and it says "ask me".
Next thing that is really weird: I can enable the tethering option (but cannot use it), yet the connection bypass (or what it is called in English) is greyed out. Tomorrow, I'm going to try the usb cable from the box...
ok, i checked with the original usb cable, still i wont get a connection. as my laptop sits on a docking station, i also tried the back-ports (at the docking station) and un-docked it - no success. none of the three ports will grant me access to the phone.
furthermore, i booted into windows xp and it will show a removable device, but i cannot access it (says something like "enter a device").
it seems to me, that it has something to do with my laptop (lenovo t61) and its usb ports... i have no idea, what to do, so i'm happy about any advice or experience...
Try the guide on adb at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865685 , it tells you where to get the Windows drivers.
thanks for the hint, i tried to adb on linux (without success), but going for the windows try...
i'm wondering about, why the phone does not simply give access to the sd-card, like any other removable device. why do i need to install htc sync (including the drivers)? when plugging any removable dev for the first time, it normally just installs the drivers and you'll get access... where is the problem here?

I know what you mean, I would have thought it would "just work" if you connect the phone in "Disk Drive" mode, where the SD card is mounted on the PC.
You're not using a USB hub, right, you've tried connecting straight to your PC's USB ports ?
no, there is no usb-hub used. the connections i tried were always direct ones.
The next thing to do would be to try to connect your phone to another computer. Because it could also be a problem with your phone rather than your usb ports.

well, the phone connects perfectly to my desktop-pc...
It's a long shot, but I did some Googling on "Lenovo T61 usb problem" and saw one report from a guy whose USB didn't work on his T61 with Ubuntu until he upgraded the BIOS
Steviewevie, you are doing my work, you know
Well thanks for the info,do you happen to have a link?
Edit:thinking about that... updating the BIOS??

I only had a quick look, so a more extensive look may well turn up some useful info. The thread I stumbled across was at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=673501
Ok,i took a look at the link (thanks!), but that deals with ubuntu 7.04. To me, it doesn't seem to be the issue that usb ports are not working, as other usb sticks and my touch pro 2 were recognized without any problems.
Imho,it is like when I connect to the front ports of my desktop, when the connection doesn't work either, so I'll have to live with it. Thanks for your support anyway (I'm still open for new approaches)
BTW: it really bugs me that I can't just plug that device and use it as a mass storage like any other...
i have absolutely no idea why, but now it works... today, when i was charging the phone via usb (the thing, that was working from the beginning), my DZ rebooted spontaneously and afterwards it just showed the missed connection options...
no i just need to figure out how to use the internet-forwarding (dont know the correct translation - what i want is to use the internet from my pc on the phone) ... any clues?
Hello all,
I'm now using my HTC Tocuh pro 2. I love the phone.

Hi
I have a slight USB Tether Problem.. Well I have had this problem for a long time.. on many different version of ROMS.. but now am getting annoyed.. as Long as I had my WiFi Hotspot I was not really to bothered about USB Tethering.. but now my Wireless & Bluetooth have decided to die on me [AGAIN] so no more WiFi Hotspot..
Ok Firstly the Wireless & Bluetooth dying is not NEW to me.. although am not sure what causes it to die and then come back to life suddenly.. When I was in UK It decided to Die on me then when I came to India after a few months of staying in the grave it decided to somehow digg itself out... so I'm not going to even bother with that issue..
UNLESS SOMEONE KNOWS WHY IT HAPPENS AND KNOWS A SURE FIX FOR IT THEN I'D BE HAPPY TO HEAR IT OUT.

Anyways this topic is for my USB Tethering problem.. the problem is when I choose USB Tether.. it will do the connecting thing.. I mean on my Laptop I can see the adapter thing saying IDENTIFYING.. then as soon as it says ENABLED.. it will say DISABLED and the adapter will disappear.. I have to remove the USB cable then plug it back in.. exactly the same thing will happen.. after a few attempts IT WILL CONNECT.
I thought maybe something wrong with the wire.. so maybe that is why.. so just to test it out I downloaded PDANET and EASY TETHER (Desktop Client and the APP)
They instantly connect no problem at all ( tried it multiple times ).. how is it that these Apps are STABLE... but the USB Tethering on the Phone is so UNSTABLE -- I don't really want to pay $15 for something that i absolutely Do Not Need... since my phone supports USB Tethering so does my Network.. soo I don't see the point of buy these apps.. but it is annoying that i have to plug and replug multiple times to get the USB Tethering started.
Anybody have an Idea why it does that??
My Phone is a HTC Desire.
Currently I am running this ROM.. RUNNYCRUX RSK TEAM ★ with AMAZE CAM
Thanks for you help in advanced.. I hope your able to understand the problem If not do state your confusion I'll try to explain it better.
Well figured it out myself... I was messing around plugging unplugging and looking at the devices manager watching it show and then disappear.. then i noticed the name it says
HTC Remote NDIS based Device #2
hehe I kinda figured I knew what the problem was.. so thought of giving it a try.. since it says #2 it will mean I had a Ghost HTC Remote NDIS based Device, which was probably interfering.. so mm
START > RUN > cmd.exe
SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
START DEVMGMT.MSC
Device Manager: View < Show Hidden

Looked I had
HTC Remote NDIS based Device
HTC Remote NDIS based Device #2
HTC Remote NDIS based Device #3
removed them all [Oh!! and Do not remove the driver when uninstalling or else you will be royally screwed ]
remove all the 7 My HTC things in Android USB Device thing as well.
plugged it back it installed the drivers now it's not troubling me it just starts pretty much instantly. YAY!!
Anyways... Still even though this problem is SOLVED.. if someone can solve my Wireless and Bluetooth out that would be awesome... those things are beyond my understanding.
Thanks alot, Rudurk.
Worked for me aswell.
