I hope this story doesn't turn out to be true but, until it is debunked, I won't be wasting my money on anymore WP7 apps. And if it turns out to be true, I will abandon WP7 altogether...set it up as strictly a Zune audio player and be done.
There's only so much a customer can be expected to take with any product. If this story is true, MS will go way beyond that limit.
http://pocketnow.com/windows-phone/microsoft-you-can-install-a-wp7-app-five-times-on-a-purchase
This is a lie and has been proven as such.
The truth is:
1/. You can only install the app on 5 different phones with the same windows live ID
2/. On any of these phones, you can install the same app as many times as you want.
3/. You have a WP7, you could've tested this with one of those $0.99 apps that you don't even like anyway instead of scaring the crap out of people.
That's not true. I think the truth is that if you use the same Live ID on more than 5 phones, you need to pay again. And you can swap out 1 phone by another one every 30 days.

How you think I felt when I read the headline? I started counting off the dollars I have invested in WP7 paid apps. Then I started thinking and rationalizing the need for system hard resets. I feel like my HD7 needs an HR right now. That would put me down to 4 more HRs before my games are no longer playable.

Even so, you could have purchased a cheap ass $.99 app, installed, uninstalled and reinstalled it 5 times to see what it told you. Doing so would have taken less effort than posting your OP and it would have given you the answer you sought - that you can indeed install the app as many times as you want on upto 5 devices at a time, with the possibility of changing one of those devices out every month.
The whole "story" came about due to a erroneous French translation.

I have read it. As for spending money you don't have - if you can't even afford a $.99 app I very much doubt you can afford your WP7 device in the first place.
In any case, the "scoop" had been debunked long before you posted this thread. Check some other blogs and you'll see lots of people have already tried it out.
I hope this **** isn't true. I was going to get a WP7 phone. Came here to get ready for the social interaction. But now I'm rethinking it because of what that article said. **** WP7 if it is!

OMG. What are you guys, twelve? If you did read the article you'll see it's said by Microsoft France - so like I said, somethings been lost in translation. If you really were that bothered you could have checked out the official English KB article over at microsoft.com that fully explains how it works - i.e. install as many times as you want on five devices and devices can be swapped out once a month.

I already provided the information you needed to get it confirmed directly from MS - check their knowledgebase.
If that's not enough, perhaps you should check the original thread over at MS Answers where Camille B. has cleared up the confusion saying there was a misunderstanding and that you can install it on five phones as many times as you like - as long as the app/game is still available on the marketplace.

Yea but this guy, Kim Dotcom(lmao), is under critical fire my friend! I don't think he'll be out anytime soon...He's been charged with a felony once before, on which he banked $42 million, BUT under German law, it was swept under the rug. And my guess is that the US government will not be as forgiven for the current charges that have been brought up against him...two of them being RACKETEERING and MONEY LAUNDERING??? WTF...but not only that, Megaupload has had endorsements from high profile celeb's which will bring this case into the limelight, so pretty soon everyone is gonna be talking about it, at which point the government will definitely not want to loss this one...http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2012/01/19/feds-shut-down-file-sharing-website/

I'm still not so sure about that. A number of them were scared into dropping support once they realized that had no idea what was actually going on in the bill or on the internet for that matter. The public backlash was pretty tangible. If things get more serious protests would likely get more intense and the backlash would likely be epic.
Do I think that means that SOPA/PIPA have been defeated? Tough question. Chances are bills called "SOPA" and/or "PIPA" will likely never get passed...but I think it's not unlikely that they will be dismantled into pieces and stuffed into "feed the poor orphans" bills, "job creation" bills and "unemployment extension" bills....what kind of heartless prick would vote against unemployment benefit extension, jobs creation and feeding poor orphans?
...only honest politicians. Good luck finding one of those let alone enough to keep something named like that from passing.
Well, as you all know the government only works for the rich. So, when the rich think there precious profits might be damaged they will arrest you. That is exactly what happened with pirate bay. They forced a foreign government to arrest people who hadnt committed a crime in their own country.
For the record I use megaupload all the time to download roms. I think we all do. They are far from pirated so hopefully they will see the site has a great legitimate purpose.

for sure you have heard about the new "XDA Developers' Android Hacker's Toolkit"
It is certainly a good idea to regroup all the forums method inside a book, wrote by hackers and geek.
the only thing I think is strange is that XDA focused on idea sharing and hacker philosopy.
So why do we have to pay for this book? It should be free, because it is not "original", all of us in some way wrote it...I don't want to pay it not because i don't want to spend money, but because I think it should respect the hacker philosopy.

I think that XDA provide us with a great place to come and learn and share our knowledge. In order to achive this their is going to be costs and if they can make some extra money from selling a book. To then use the said money to make this service even better, i can only see it as a good thing. Also a lot of people find it easier to read from a book than a computer screen.
Edit - I have just read the portal artical, and all the profits are going to the EFF, although the money is not going directly into XDA, it will directly help and benifit XDA, as they have done in the past.
All revenue earned through purchases of the book on Amazon will be donated to the EFF, which has given assistance to members of our community in the past. It’s available in both physical and eBook formats. Without further ado, here’s where you can get it right now:

Yes the profits are going to a very good cause. And to be honest with you I don't have any problem spending the $23 USD plus tax for the book. I really don't see why anyone would have a problem with it. But you just can not please all of the people no matter how hard you try.
I ordered mine in October, 2011. After many delays (like the Galaxy S3) I received my copy from amazon on Tuesday. I will use this weekend to read it. Learn some pointers.
As mentioned, profits from Amazon sales are donated to EFF.
All other profits (as anyone knows that has worked with a publisher), will be minuscule. We didn't do this to earn revenue, but to give people a great way to learn about Android development.
Keep on eye on the Portal...we'll be giving away a batch of free copies in the near future.

Good things come at a price..'nuff said.
For as long as most android users, most have been with android since the beginning. We now have gaming, interactive apps and all sorts of cooky apps. Some to most of which are priced.
Here's an article I found trying to find Indie PC games for android "I failed".
http://www.webpronews.com/android-users-dont-want-to-pay-for-anything-2012-07 it talks about android users don't pay for apps, mostly because of root/no trial-free version.
This struck me as interesting because honestly I'd figure devs to be happy to share there work with the world for free. I honestly myself believe devs who charge just want money.
I do unfortunately buy some of these terrible products, but do give props and respect to those who do manage to make a fantastic app.
If its priced at least make it a good app, give a trial or free version.
This is where gaming comes in, obviously we know if not most games are marked with prices with no free trials and are half assed.
So I can see where piracy comes in, no one wants to pay 5.99$ for a half assed game. I've bought some games I regret and I proudly say if they release another I will pirate it. Sometimes its better to stay free, if its a great app or a dev who has done previous great work I would support them.
Yes I do pirate and I don't. Its where I stand with the devs and apps.
I'm shocked we don't pay for ROMs honestly.. these devs are fantastic at what they do and yes its for free, so props to them "unless it would be illegal which I don't believe it is" :sly:
Anyway.. I'm curious what you guys think?
Feel the same, do you support every dev in the play store?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
This is not meant to be offensive, but I might rant a bit.
Devs sharing their work for free? Have you ever programmed, taken a programming course, or had to pay 80k for a bachelors in Computer Science? It is time consuming to think of a good idea, implement it well, and then squash bugs. It takes HOURS, days, if not months.
Yes, there are devs who charge for crappy apps and I agree, some devs are greedy. However, isn't paying for an app the same logic as paying for a pizza? Yes, you can make one yourself, but its not like you can make a quality pizza without spending a lot in ingredients or machines (ovens, etc)--you're paying for the convenience of it being done already for you.
This applies to apps as well. You may be able to program something similar given enough time, but you are paying for the convenience and their time for making the app for you to use. Just because it is digital and not tangible doesn't make it any less work.
Now I agree that there should be some sort of trial for an app to see whether or not its good or that you like it. Unfortunately, the world doesnt run on this type of honesty and nobody would pay if it were offered for free. Thats why devs have to charge and thats why some people pirate. However, if you do pirate, please throw the developer some money if you really enjoy their app or use it frequently, otherwise if they go broke, how will they keep developing your favorite app?
/rant
You are right.
No argument* I want it to be a clean talk amongst android users.

Same goes for PC games. PC gamers can't rent games so they pirate. If you buy a PC game , guess what, you're stuck with it.
But, as for android apps at least we can get a refund which eleviates the need for a trial in some circumstances
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Piracy is a huge issue on Android, but like any thing you just have to put a little effort into making it more difficult to crack. Although a lot of people say that leaving it free with ads actually makes them more money then charging for it.
http://techcrunch.com/2012/08/26/how-free-apps-can-make-more-money-than-paid-apps/
edit: if you like indie games you should check out the humble bundle
OP, your logic is horrible. I do applaud your honesty, no matter how awful I believe it to be. Devs create content have a free will choice to make, and those who charge are well within their rights to do so. NOBODY HAS THE RIGHT TO STEAL, EVER. Now, having said that, some devs create content as their job. How can they buy food and pay rent if people steal their stuff. This thread is a failure, other than highlighting the challenge Google has in locking down Android to prevent piracy but still allow side loading and customizing.

When i was new to android, i swore i would never pay for an app or game, and was happy that way. Then i got titanium backup and loved it, but hated that i couldn't batch restore, so i broke down and bought premium. Then i started frequenting these forums, seeing how much effort some of these devs out into their apps, games, etc. Now i pay for them, gladly, an i look for paid apps by respected devs first. Mostly i do it for functionality, but also to support. Titanium Backup, Franco kernel, CWM touch recovery, root explorer and many more I've bought and will gladly continue to do so. I get better apps and i support further development. Win/win in my book.

Right, because 5.99 is such an exorbitant price... so many other things that I could do with that money that would have lasting value... wait. No, not really.
If you don't want to spend the money on the app then you don't really want it. Don't steal.
Because of this thinking and abuse Android is full of crap adware/push adware games, and you don't see most quality games released for Android. That is so sad.
I just have one question: do you work for free? Or do your poor employer have to shell out some bucks to have you working there? Yes, I wonder why those bastard devs charge for they hard work, or use those ad craps to try to get some money out of their hard work...
And also, you say, there is a lot of sh1tware, yes, there are, as there are a lot of sh1temployees.... You hire them, they do not do their work, they get fired... You buy sh1tware, you realize it is sh1t, then you won't ever buy anything from those bastards again... I really loved when you had an entire day to get a refund in Android Market, but them, a lot of smartass3s had to abuse it, and just use the game/app for the entire day and ask for a refund, doing that for several games/apps....
So, if Android market for games is like it is today, is just because most people think like you, either don't buy anything at all, they prefer to stick to a free ad game than paying 5-7-10 bucks for a quality game like Infinity Blade, or, worse, they just pirate it, and yes, installous and jailbreak exist for iOS, but this is not as easy as just ticking a box in settings menu and then downloading APK's from anywhere...
Don't get me wrong, I love the way Android is open, but, unfortunately, most people suck and doesn't know how to use freedom, instead, they abuse and try to get advantages out of it...
Unfortunately Google will probably end up walling their garden because of these issues, or at least surrounding it with thorn bushes

Yup. Jail broke my brother's iPhone and the first thing he ask is, "OK load it up with apps for free."
I stared at him and made him learn it himself. He did, but still, $1 doesnt kill.
I just bought COD: BOZ, a $7 app. The closest I am to pirating is "Game Sharing".
Me and my friends put each other's Gmail account(requires a lot of trust Cuz we can tamper with each other's mail & stuff) on each other's phone and share our purchased apps. Done.
I do admit I pirate once in a while(Nova 3 being one, so laggy that it wasn't worth the price.)
But there is one punishment I love about Jailbreakers, if you pirate your apps, u can't put em back in when you unjailbreak to upgrade to the next iOS.

i never thoght i would pay money for apps or anything. but later on as i used android, and looked at forums, i realized that devs really do alot of work. put urself in their shoes, and first thing i thought was "why the fk should i bother making this crap if all its gonna do is go to some ungrateful persons phone and im not even gonna get a thanks". so i regularly buy apps. not only does that make the android market that much closer to being as good and as diverse as the ios market, but u also get the LEGIT app without any risks of having some weird ass **** go wrong with ur phone in a very subtle way.....
Started a new thread for anyone that wanted to continue the conversation about self defense from this thread because it is getting way off topic from the OP.
Self defense: what's your stance? Firearm, or no?
Open discussion, let's not attack someone else's views/opinions, or say things that will have a mod close this thread.
Is anyone ANTI-self defense? I mean, you can be pro-self defense (martial arts) and be anti-firearm.
Personally, I have a shotgun, a .22 and a .45. I'm seriously considering getting a license to conceal and carry but I don't currently. I also have had years of living with a Dad who was a gun nut and he filled my head with more opinions on the various aspects of gun control, concealing and even gun ownership than you could imagine. What stuck with me though is that you should NEVER own a gun unless you are SURE you can use it. You must be of the mindset that you can take a life, because if you don't - if you hesitate - your gun could be used against you. I don't know if many people actually mull over the fact that bad guy or not, everyone is someone's son or daughter. And once the aggression drains from that face you laid down, you are looking at a human being. Who is scary dying or dead? Can you live the rest of your life with that on you?
If I lived alone, I wouldn't own a gun. But I have a family and their well being is my responsibility. Would I kill if I had to? Only for them. Nothing I own is worth a life otherwise.
Just my two cents. You're welcome to disagree. I spent years arguing with Dad, "I could do it. No problem." And then I had kids and my perspective changed. I am changed.
Much respect to all who participate in this thread.
What is this doing on XDA ????

Well said. I also have a family, and would do absolutely anything necessary for them. I conceal carry anywhere its legal, any time I am able to, as well as my wife. Of course, I would only use a firearm when absolutely necessary, and would not hesitate when it can to my family. Like you said, you have to have already decided if the time came to take a life, you need to know if you will or not, and not hesitate.
I'm also a life member of the NRA, and platinum member of the USCCA - they provide funds in the event of a criminal or civil lawsuit, as you as you did everything correctly.
I don't comprehend the government's views on the 2nd amendment, and states like Illinois where it is extremely difficult to legally defend yourself with a firearm. There are clear statistics showing that pro-gun states/cities have a lower crime rate over a period of time. I'm at work at the moment, so I don't have a link to provide as a reference currently.

Check out the link in the OP. Background info - someone got their new HTC One stolen at gunpoint. That thread got way off topic, as the OP was inquiring what they could do to possibly locate the phone.
In some states its illegal to claim self-defense if you were already carrying a weapon with "intent" to defend yourself.
I begin self defense up to and including killing someone in self defense. But of course situation dictates, I'm not going to shoot someone for stealing my $30 grill from my front porch. But if someone were to break into my house and I were in the house, who ever comes through my door better be ready to die.

I understand why the thread was started. My wife and I both have a carry permit and believe in the second amendment.
What I was saying was XDA is not for NRA and gun control debates, it's for phone info.

Yea, and this logic baffles me.

Agreed. One should never even reach for a firearm unless its something serious to begin with, which includes breaking into my home with my wife and kids. In Kentucky (and probably most states) you can only legally self defend with a deadly weapon for serious injury/bodily harm/death, rape/sexual act, kidnapping. As far as property, the law isn't perfectly clear, but if the perp is in your home, it's all bad for them.

Fair enough. But it was already being discussed anyway, and if fellow xda members wanted to discuss it further, here is the thread. No disrespect, but you're also basically saying 'why are people talking about sports in the off topic thread?' Same logic.
This has nothing to do with the Verizon HTC One or any other phone. There is a forum on XDA for off topic discussions unrelated to phones, appropriately titled Off-Topic Forum. Nothing personal, I just come here for info about the phone I use and would like to keep it that way. I rather not see the thread popping up to the top every time someone comments on this sometime volatile subject.
Or we could just take the discussion here:
