Hello fellow ET4G owners and enthusiasts!
I'm new to this side of the Android community, but have been on the OS since the G1. I recently purchased the ET4G after my Evo4G was no longer meeting my data capacity and speed needs.
I was a little skeptical at first as my ex girlfriend had gone through a samsung moment and the update cycle was painfully slow, along with the TouchWiz UI being somewhat distasteful as compared to Sense but still better than MotoBlur...but after a few data with my ET4G I can confidently say I have bonded with this lightning fast behemoth.
Camera is phenomenal, speed and usability makes emulating Android on my i7 rig look like a tortoise, and the display is untouchablely gorgeous...so much I'd like to lick it! (facetiously of course)
I was admittedly a little skeptical at first given the price point and my attachment to my EVO and the related community..but so far so great, and I look forward to being a part of this growing (and very knowledgeable) group.
One question before I go; can anyone recommend a good mashup blog for news and dev updates associated with the ET4G? GoodandEvo was a fantastic EVO blog, and if there's a need for the ET4G perhaps I can contribute.
Thanks!

I'm gonna be new to this forum as well I just ordered mine and can't wait to push OG Evo to the side for the same reasons but it needs an SD card since I bought it off of Swappa, any recommendations on brand and size and also a dumb question I can't use TB from my Evo to the E4GT, or can I lol? Thanks!
For android news including anything to do with the ET4G I read Androidcentral.com and Androidpolice.com welcome aboard!

im sure you could. just make sure to go under preferences in titanium and select the right backup folder location to your ex sd card. then ONLY restore APPS ONLY and not apps/data

I would stick with CWM personally for now, simply because it's the most widely used. If things change down the line and something else replaces it as the standard, you can always switch.

cwm is the only recovery right now. rogue recovery is based on cwm. a new recovery is in the works for our phone, but we just have to be patient for that. jump over to rootzwiki if you want another aosp rom that isnt on here
I definitely want to take advantage of the 4G and see how it compares to my OG Evo so I'll be staying away from the AOSP for a bit

Hey guys. Just got my new company phone after my skyrocket shattered. Can't stand the LG ui ... I want to root. My phone us owned by at&t..as an employee am I at risk to root you think? I'm familiar with root just not sure if it's risky since this phone isn't mine technically
If you know what you're doing and can back up everything for restoral later (CWM can help with this, of course), I don't see why you'd get in trouble for playing with your company phone. Just don't create more work than necessary for support techs and you should be fine lol. Also, you probably don't want to flaunt crazy customizations to your coworkers
Or you could always use Go Launcher Ex and other Go products
Sent from my Motorola Photon 4G (MoPho) on Sprint, the Now Network using XDA Premium.
Ya I'm using adw right now with go locker. Still doesn't help me with the LG ui in every core app as well as the nasty notification icons. Any suggestions on how I can get those looking a little better?
As for rooting..I asked a coworker. He said I'd get fired Haha. Not sure how they would ever find out..
AT&T are parasitic leeches, they will find out. Trust me. They monitor the phones. I'd buy a Nitro off contract with a clean ESN and load it onto your account, that way you can say that it's your phone.
---------- Post added at 09:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:24 PM ----------
BUT, I would not risk getting fired. Try using a personal AT&T account.
Ya I'm gonna get a personal account when my sprint contract runs out. Anything I can do for notification icons? Or how hideous LG makes everything

No not yet as there is NO roms or ASOP stuff out for it yet. So rooting or not rooting ur still gonna have it
FWIW, I've worked for At&t for a year and a half, and I've rooted every phone I've had. They can't tell when your phone is rooted; I even have a couple coworkers that have flashed MIUI on their GSIIs.

Where do you come off with saying that AT&T will find out if your phone is rooted? Firstly, u don't seem to be on AT&T but instead on Sprint. Second, there won't be hundreds of forums dedicated to AT&T android phones if AT&T knows immediately if you root the phone. Third, millions of users Root their phones, and even unlock the bootloader. I just sent my unlocked Atrix back to AT&T due a damaged 3.5mm port, and they didn't even say anything. So please do not provide false information to those who wish to know.
Oh now I'm tempted.. thanks for letting me know. What are the advantages without custom roms? And did you Work retail or does that even matter. And is there a recovery image just in case?

There is a recoverory image I think. BUT theres nothing for us to REALLY do to our phones yet. no roms or anything
it seems to me that since you came here inquiring about the risk to your job, that there is indeed some % of chance that you could lose your job over rooting your phone, is that fair to say?
if that's fair to say, I think this is not the best place to seek job security advice + the answer seems obvious.
Ya its not worth my job. I'll just wait for my personal phone in a few months. Thanks for the help guys. That Guy who said he roots all his COUs got me thinking though
Hey guys so I caved and got the Galaxy Nexus the play store version as I saw the receipt I had payed 300 bucks for it as it is the 16 gig, and in like brand new like condition... Even the box was still newish like what ever that I is supposed to mean...
Now I have had the HTC n1 and the Nexus s and a slew of other phones...
I was gonna order the N4 but this bloody thing came with an otter box and a zagg screen guard... All for 300 bones...
Now this is what I need k I was fine with other phones but for some reason this suckered has me like confused...
I need too get this beast rooted and flashed up on some recovery software and what the best rom would be for this hand set and the best kernel as such I see a lot on Here for this phone and is going too need like crazy battery life and decent performance when needed...
If yeah can be kind as to direct me to all the best roms like the top 5 kinda thing and kernels and what ever else to make this phone the best that it can be... Also keeping in mind that I am in Canada in the southwest region of Ontario on the Wind mobility network so please be kind lol
Oh in other news I ran in to a guy on kijiji he had a slew of games and BlOps2... So I didn't believe and I met the guy and he showed me it and it was real as real can be... And had NukeTown 2025... Sweet eh... Just thought I would put that out there...

if they f up when i specifically said "read and then use it" then they shouldnt be messing with their phone in the first place.. rather than posting this useless post you could have tried to "point the new user" in the right direction.. and the toolkit is easy to use and explains what every option does, i could have told him to use adb but that would have confused him even more

I am going to have to go with you on this one. If you read up well before you do anything it shouldn't be a problem. I have the motto of read 3 times then do just so you have a good grasp on what is going on. I was new to the ToolKit when I used it but after reading up and watching a couple vids on it, it was pretty easy and I had zero problems with the kit. I do however feel the need to tell people that if they are not comfortable or feel uneasy then you shouldn't do it nor should you try cause it can cause problems.
If you read up...

Well they both don't have microSD slots so you would have to spend more for the 32gb nexus
I'm so fresh you can suck my nits...
I ended up buying a Nexus. I never have really cared about the latest or greatest spec'd phone, but updates and roms are what make a phone in my opinion. I previously had an OG droid which was awesome for that. I was kind of let down with the inc2 since I got it late in the game and most developers had jumped ship already. The Nexus has a great community behind it with fast updates. Feels like home again.

I recently had a Dinc2 and bought a GNex outright for 200 new. Best decision ever.
I wont buy HTC ever again, just because they dont update phones as fast. I dont know how much longer the GNex will be supported, but at least it officially runs 4.1.1 and there is no need to hack bootloaders and such.
I also prefer AOSP and love that there is minimal bloatware on the phone.
The DNA is new which is nice, but no sd card (probably all phones will go to this setup) and no removable battery. On a 4G phone? No thanks.
Oh, and I kept my unlimited data...which I dont even use that often (maybe 1 GB) but I dont like Verizon telling me to spend more and get less.

Okay,
I think being blunt is the only way. I think this might stop stupid questions about ROM OTA's
Okay everyone,
Everyone needs to realize that all dev's do it for free because they enjoy it. When people start to demand things, I think dev's get pissed and decide to stop. Honestly, I don't blame them. Stop your b**ching & asking for OTA's. ROM's will be updated when they are updated. I'm ranting, but I'm so sick of this coming up. Don't unlock your phone and flash custom ROM's. Everyone needs to calm down & realize that nobody gets paid for this s**t. I'm not trying to be rude, but really grow up.
I wish I didn't run out of thanks for the day

That's a good idea but it would just result in all the new/junior members spamming the general, Q&A, and themes sections just so they can get access. Another type of restriction of some sort would have to be added to prevent that.

With a semi stable version of twrp and project treble functionality making rom development supposedly simple, curious why is it that we have not a single rom even in it's infancy?
Lack of developers?
Waiting for stable twrp?
Because the minimum price for an XL is 849$. Not to mention all the problems that come along with it.
Development might be very slow. Till the price drops or they have a hardware revision and fix the screen. Not to mention Oreo is still very new.
I didn't buy this phone for development, mines still stock and enjoying it.
I was thinking the same thing, regarding slow ROM development. Kernel development took off immediately and there are a few solid kernel options available. But I'm surprised to see no ROMs available yet.
However, I do think there is some major truth behind the points antiochasylum made. On top of that, root is still in the infancy stage and TWRP is just very recently stable enough to be fully installed. My guess is that ROMs will start being made available in the next couple of weeks.
There is no reason to make a rom for this device. It works well as it is. Most know that by now. No reason to unlock, root, flash, you name it. The reason being there is no benefit. Well we have some font stuff, being able to brick it, and "I want control on my device" things but that is ancient history. Custom roms are basically done.
Stop asking for development if you are not willing to do it yourself.

That and I'm sure some of the devs who will most likely be in our corner don't even have a device yet. Some of them buy a phone based on donations or wait until they see how big the user base is.
Some will come as the stardust settles...
I'd love a rom that gets tethering to work again with VZ. Thinking about returning since I heavily rely on hotspot with my grandfathered plan.

With such age and wisdom you should ask to become a Fellow on XDA.

I have a signature? Hmm. How about " Android since rooted Eris" ? Ever heard of that phone? Oc to 750. Guess the ROM?

Pfft. OG G1!=P back when you had to destroy a SD card to root.
To the topic at hand. I rooted my pixel 2 XL two days ago. Still trying to figure out why lol. I tweaked the display a tad to make it a little warmer and that's about it. Rooting is about control. ROMs are about customization. And what's left to customize? You going to make the phone faster?
OP5 has lots of development. one yes it's cheaper. But two, it needs it. Trying to improve on the camera. Make it a little snappier. And honestly most of the ROMs over there run worse than stock.
Real ROM development was because most of the time you couldn't get the latest and greatest on your phone. So you get a ROM built off the latest AOSP so you could be running the most recent software. or you were on TouchWiz and wanted vanilla. Those days are dead.
I'm sure in the coming weeks a few ROMs will get cooked together. And the hardcore flashers will install it. Maybe it will be amazing but the simple fact is stock Android is so good the concept of rooting and ROMs is more novelty than necessary at this point

You can. I have og grandfathered Verizon plan and tethering works for me. Had to change the build prop but it works.

I'd love a rom that gets tethering to work again with VZ. Thinking about returning since I heavily rely on hotspot with my grandfathered plan.

Wow, so overwhelmed with flashbacks almost brought a tear. Bugless beast was legit. Back when rootzwiki was the place to be.
Ok, I'm done hijacking the thread lol
