I am really liking CM7. The only thing I really miss is HTC's camera app. Much better, IMO. So I wonder, is it possible (and how hard is it) to replace the CM7 camera with the original?

Actually its IMpossible. The sense camera relies on sense framework, which cm7 obviously does not have. The only option at this point is to get another camera app comparable to sense's such as possibly the MIUI camera.

Figures.

first of all i want to thank everyone that contributed to CM6, and the team most of all.without them a lot of things would not be possible.
CM6 is awesome but it needs an awesome camera. WE have a 8-MEGAPIXEL BEAST OF A OPTICAL SENSOR WHY NOT TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF IT? lets face it the camera was not designed for the evo. it was ported to work. Not designed around it to REALLY take full advanage of the sensor. How about we change that? how can I contribute to that?

I completely agree, the Sense camera is so much better than the cm6 camera. The touch to focus effect on the cm6 camera is worthless yet it is so awesome on the sense camera.

yes we need this topic to be of great importance. because i have tried all the camera apks from just about all different types of roms... nothing compares to the sense camera

Maybe starting a bounty for that reason. If a dev likes the idea maybe they will take it. But the CM6 cam is pretty badass imo.
I have to agree with that. I find my picture quality on CM is night and day better than when I was on a Sense ROM.

Really? I find the Camera on CM6 slightly worse than the one on Sense ROMs (specifically stock and myn's)
Something I've been wondering for awhile. One of the things I love about sense is the camera app.(One of the things I always look forward to in sense roms)
Here is my question(s): (I'm running Salvage1.1) Does the camcorder's high quality setting = 720p? And is there a way to get the combination of 8mp and 5:3 without the use of a 3rd party camera app?

I'm looking for same thing, miss sense cam

Yeah and it kinda sucks for me at the moment. I'm on vacation in DC and I want my pics/video to be the best quality but I can't be sure with the stock can.
Sent from my EVO running Salvage Mod 1.1
i always nand back to sense for photos and video. Actually just did 2 hours photo comparisons with my IT people because I need good pictures this weekend too and they think the stock 2.3 camera pictures look better than the sense pictures. They then went into a rant about the differences in dpi, photo size, sw filling in pixels, and other stuff. I learned nothing, but the 6mp widescreen setting in options on 2.3 are pretty good pics.
In terms of video, the 720 on sense does look a lot better than the 480 on gb. Their opinion was "carry a camcorder" if you want good video and plan on making a dvd or something. That became "if i want a great steak, I wouldn't go to Ground Round, I'd go to a real steak house". I found that offensive because ground round serves mixed drinks in the big cups.
Love to hear other's thoughts on the cameras as well... told you I learned nothing
So the high quality setting on stock is 480. Darn, I really don't like having to switch ROMs when I'm away from home but I might have to. Ill take a look at the video I just took and see how it looks.
Sent from my EVO running Salvage Mod 1.1
There are reports of way better video quality on salvage mod then on sense tho, especially with audio. The audio on sense sucks total ass im gonna see for myself and run a few tests.
Umm yeah no test needed it's alot better with salvage by far
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
So quality IS better? Im just wondering if the stock cam on salvage allows 720p recording.

Image quality might not be at 720 buts Its damn close but voice quality is definitely better. Ill take this over a little better image quality but ****ty voice anyday

Did you run those tests yet? Compare decks and cm7 too. I would do it but my vision is a little blurred
my findings
just tested out numerous video and camera files from all different roms using teamwin HDMI mirroring on my 52" samsung lcd. The AOSP videos and photos DO look better even though they are labelled with lower resolution. The aosp 8mp and 6mp wide screen photo look much better than the sense 8mp and the aosp video is much smoother, sounds so much better, but will leave a little strip of black on the sides, but not much.
I'm finally convinced that i don't need sense anymore, thanks to you and Labatts
Just realized AOSP is without the facial recognition. But that's really no big deal. Thanks for the input

How do you switch between quality settings (6mp and 8mp) in the camera app in CM7-RC4? I don't see an option in the settings.
Sent from my CM7 Evo using XDA App
On most aosp roms tap the 1st icon on the screen while in the camera app and scroll down to the picture quality section. You should have the option there.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Wow! This whole time that section.is scrollable! What was I thinking?!? Thanks for the input!

I have 2 questions, apologies if they are a bit noobish.
Why does the display seem more vibrant when running Sense ROMS? Is this just me?
Will CM10 ever be able to use the Imagesense chip? Because photos on Sense ROMS are miles better than on CM10.

I don't think the screen is any different. CM10 will never use imagesense chip, because it requires sense framework.

If you are using auto-brightness it is quite a bit brighter on sense ROMs so that may make them seem more vibrant.

What bugs me is that somehow Sense ROMs manage to still have a significantly better battery life with a quite noticeably brighter screen...
See I agree there but screen wise I think aosp looks much more polished I'd agree with sense looking like its contrast is s bit high

So I guess it's not possible to use the Sense 6 camera on stock KitKat, can someone explain why or what a dev would have to accomplish to port it?
Imo the google camera is pretty ****ty compared to the Sense camera, it made some great picutes, but I just love stock KitKat on my phone.. What's the best solution here? Another ROM?
Also, would a camera alternative from the Play store possibly help here?
Edit: Oh ****, I posted this in General, not Q&A, Help and Troubleshoot, sorry mods, please move the thread if necessary :/

Have you tried this google camera it's pretty decent https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.GoogleCamera I also believe in the future they will release some of their software in the market for all devices running kit kat and above like Zoe and stuff.
If the camera in Sense is anything like previous HTC cameras (which it most likely is), it is tightly tied in with HTC Sense and is pretty much impossible to port. That's the sacrifice that you make giving up the HTC framework. Why not just use the Google Experience Launcher on a Sense build? Cuts down the bloat (although Sense 6 is incredibly smooth) but you can still use all of the phone's features.

I just love to play around with stuff, like GravityBox and other Xposed modules, different launchers, boot animations and believe me I tried stock Sense and Viper rom, but I'm just in love with my phone the way it is right now. Well, I guess I'll have to try again with Sense, since imo the Google Camera is not pretty decent. Pictures are always too bright, no matter where the focus is, it's awful.
RAM usage on stock is so much better, the UI is smooth on both but heavy games make Sense suffer. Battery life is great on both, not so much on ViperRom.
I see you're on InsertCoin, how's battery life there? Because as much as I liked Viper, it drained my battery too fast. I use ElementalX Kernel too.
I would not say that sense 6 is incredibly smooth. I would say it's smooth until you start doing things very quickly, then it stutters which made me choose gpe over sense. Also gravity box does offer a perfect amount of customizability. I also miss the sense camera but Meh, what can ya do??

Nothing against Viper but I have found that InsertCoin is better optimized for battery life and performance on both the M7 and now the M8. Viper focuses on total customization and is loaded to the brim with features but I feel that comes at an expense battery-wise.
I also don't have any problems with any stuttering or anything on InsertCoin that I can tell, its actually quite a smooth experience. Its faster than my Nexus 7 in every way - that may not be a fair comparison up front but my M7 was noticeably laggy doing some things (heavy gaming for one) and that doesn't seem to be the case anymore with the M8.
Battery life is phenomenal. I got 49 hours out of the last charge but that only accounted for 71% of total usage since I did a reboot to change kernels. It included 2hr15m of screen on time which doesn't sound like much but when you factor in the fact that it was time spent playing Brave Frontier, a game that beats down the battery on my Nexus 7 and tore up my M7 (not to mention overheated it), it becomes even more impressive. I don't use Greenify or anything, had WiFi and LTE on the whole time, GPS was enabled, etc.

Just did a backup and installed InsertCoin and reinstalled ElementalX afterwards but it was overall a really laggy expierience for me. Anything special to consider when installing?

Strange, I don't know actually. It seems to be gone now. My phone got quite warm, RAM usage was low the whole time so I guess the CPU was the problem. Now everything seems smooth! It was like micro lags all over the phone...
