Hi. I bought my galaxy nexus yestarday and it comes with unlocked bootloader! Is this normal? The box was factory sealed. Also is this why i cant update my phone sw to 4.0.2?

No, that is not normal. If you are running a stock ROM with the phone unlocked I think you will still get OTA updates. 4.0.2 seems to not have been pushed to all phone just yet. You can also just manually update to 4.0.2.

Shouldn't come unlocked. Take it back.

I'm not taking it back, just not a big deal...and it saves me the work when going custom rom route...maybe tomorow

In Australia I believe at least 1 carrier (vodaphone) have delivered unlocked..
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

That makes sense, because mine it's also sim locked to vodafone.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

there have been reports of others walking out with unopened gnex's that were unlocked. just a lazy oversight.

Might be an engineering phone. That's why I say take it back.

It is sounding to me like there may be some confusion between an Unlocked SIM versus an Unlocked Bootloader. Are we sure the OP isn't referring to the device being SIM Unlocked, which to my knowledge is true for the majority of Galaxy Nexus and for that matter Nexus devices in general? I can't name a device that i've seen with an Unlocked Bootloader from factory. Am I just straigt up wrong here?
- 90's

There is no confusion, unlock bootloader for sure....used to have a nexus s, same lock animation on startup.

Why would he take it back? If he does have an engineering bootloader, it could help all of us. (I've been searching for an engineering bootloader.)
@OP, could you tell us the version of your bootloader?
Thanks.

Thanks. That's not an engineering bootloader, it is a shipping bootloader.

Actually there are many reports of people walking out of a store (whether GSM or VZW nexus) and having an unlocked bootloader from the factory. They're not engineering/development OS, either. Just some people got lucky.

How is it lucky? It takes all of 10 seconds to unlock your bootloader.

I received mine from Sweden, it was on ICS 4.0.1 with locked bootloader. Phone seemed horrible in battery life - 6-7 hours of use. Now with OpenKang 4.0.3 b11 and franco kernel 7.1 it exceeded my expectations - this device rocks!

"fastboot oem unlock". Why lucky?

[Q] An carrier unlocking question prior to picking up an arc

Evening
I've spent a few hours searching now but i can't find anything specific to my question.
i've been offered an arc in trade for my desire z. I really like the look of it but the issue I have is that it is a carrier locked model on the three network.
I figure the sim unlocking of the device is simple enough in a local shop or something. However, i then stumbled on a few posts that state the carrier locked versions can't have their bootloader unlocked. is this true?
I guess i'm looking for a little confirmation prior to committing to a decision either way really.
thanks in advance

Has anyone not received this update yet? I still haven't. I unlocked my boot loader but didn't root. I'm pretty sure I should still get the update though.

still no update.
I remember that I had the same problem with my xoom (US version) with the first update.
Then I read that it would help to register the device on a specific motorola internet site which I did and it worked almost instantly.
But that can't a solution for a google phone.

Is the nexus stock unlocked?

I am going to order a nexus from Rogers in Canada. Is the nexus unlocked from the start, just wondering? Or can carriers lock it?
They're "locked" out of the box, but to unlock it I just used a simple program available on the development boards. You'll also need the ADB drivers to connect.
FYI mine is a CDMA Verizon phone. Very easy to unlock.

Yours shipped with an unlocked bootloader ? Was it a test device? Or are you referring to a sim lock?
Sent from my Google phone
I bought my Galaxy Nexus from Rogers, and its unlocked. Just tossed in my MTS sim card, put in my APN settings, and voila! Works like a charm.
Yous are confusing each other. The GSM version is unlocked in the aspect of network compatibility. Meaning you can throw a AT&T/Tmobile sim in it & make calls/data etc. Now the bootloader is locked wich is unlocked with fastboot after installing the adb drivers. The reason for unlocking the bootloader is to flash a recovery image so you can root.

You don't need to flash a new recovery to root. That's what makes the Nexus-phones so awesome. You can boot them from code hosted outside the phone, be it for development-purposes, recovery-purposes, or like for most people, rooting.
Otherwise not debating your point. But this is a common misconception, so I thought I'd correct it.
every GSM version are not sim-locked
My first one from O2 was unlocked. The two warranty replacements from the same shop were locked. Go figure.

Verizon (CDMA): Same
GSM Galaxy Nexus: Unlocked
DoCoMo GSM Galaxy Nexus: Locked... use search feature for unlocking tool.
You can buy an already unlocked one from Google for $400
Well I'm guessing I need to get the unlocked one its not a bad price for being unlocked I probably will unlock my glide and sell it but is this phone a good phone

All of them are unlocked really.
Sprint / Verizon: only works on their respective networks because they're the ONLY carriers who use that technology.
GSM is a better variant overall. Updates from Google (Yakju/Takju), better battery life. $399 on Play Store.. yes its good, its a nexus device

No.... don't make this thread into a Nexus 3 speculation thread.
And there is no such thing as the next "Galaxy Nexus" it'll most likely be under a new name unless its called GN2 which I'll be surprised if that was the name.

This
the GSM galaxy nexus was SIM unlocked from the get go. the only carrier locked G-nexus' are the verizon and sprint ones.
stick a new SIM in and you are good to go.
you might have seen bootloader Unlocking....allowing you to flash a custom Recover and install Custom RoM's. and since this is a nexus, its SUPER easy.
