After calling 911 the other night for an emergency my phone wouldn't let me use data for 5 minutes. I tried to turn WiFi on and it would not connect either. Did a battery pull and replaced it with fully charged battery and still - wouldn't let me do any data until this Emergency Callback Mode timer expired.
Just wanted to let everyone know...
Seems like the "authentication" issue that was going around for awhile. Phone failed to authenticate with the network or just couldn't find a signal.

I don't think it was an auth issue, more like a feature. Blackberry users have had the same thing. On a BB you can make a regular call and clear the timer, not so on my Nexus.

Seems like a network feature then..
That's neat. So your data connection can't interfere with anything if 911 tries to call you back.

Very smart.
after a few minutes the phone will alert you that it is out of emergency mode. a very cool feature i think.
it happened to me when i called 911 on my original droid.
I wonder if this is the same for 999 or 112?

I'm traveling overseas in September for over half a month and want to call Sprint and get them to freeze my account while I'm gone. I understand the monthly fee is $8.99 (don't know if they will pro-rate it or what) which is much better than paying for that month of service that you hardly use.
Since I'm going out of the country and won't be able to use my EVO, I'm assuming I can freeze my account but still use the phone, just without any mobile wireless capabilities.
The wifi should be able to look up stuff online, check email, and look at Google Maps, correct? I just want to make sure there's not some weird kind of thing that Sprint would lock out all the features of your phone.
Bottom line: you can freeze your account but still use all features besides making calls and sending texts via mobile broadband, right? But all apps (besides GPS) can work off wi-fi, unless the app is specifically designed to use mobile broadband only.
Thank you to anyone who helps!
get you a google voice number and you'll have a phone as long as you're on wifi too

I thought that would be the case too, but GV relies on the phone's non broadband capabilities - so you need mobile broadband/phone line for it to work.
I thought I was being clever and found away to never use minutes by using GV to dial to landlines but that's not the case.
I would venture to say that unless you are traveling somewhere that has cdma coverage, your normal phone related functions won't work anyway since you won't have reception. You really shouldn't need to pay a fee to basically disable the phone portion of your phone since on the evo, you have the option to have the airplane mode exclude wifi from the radios it disables. I traveled to the UK back in april and can attest to the fact that the wifi on my old pre worked without a hitch and I can also confirm that it did not receive signal either so there were no incoming calls or sms messages to worry about. All that said, you shouldn't have any trouble with wifi. As long as you're on wifi, google maps should work just fine as well.

OK thanks, I didn't want to assume anything, because, you know, I really wouldn't be surprised if a company froze more than just sending/receiving texts/calls capability (in addition to web surfing obviously).
I just don't want to pay almost $100 for 2 weeks of service out of the month - so I need to give em a call and see if they can freeze it for 2 weeks and charge me half as much, that way I can save a little cash.

Any VOIP should work on wi-fi... damn skype and Fring shenanigans... I was so looking forward to that when I deployed... would have made it so much easier to communicate with my wife. (shes not real big on technology and my short fuse of trying to setup/explain how to do new things sucks) lol...
You basically sumed it up, all apps should work fine unless they need specific network support. In my past experiences with deploying for short terms, it was actually just easier to suck it up and pay the bill instead of downgrading service. They don't always get it right and if you end up coming back early it can be a PITA to get it back on..

Thanks, I was thinking about the same thing about it being such a pain in the ass to deal with it as well... and when I finally get back stateside at least I'll definitely have service.
Although Google Voice requires the mobile network for phone, it uses data for sms and I expect mms. So if you had WiFi access you would have texting available.

I purchased an EVO for my girlfriend. Did the unrevoked root to it only. No custom ROM or kernel. Used sdx app remover to clear off the junk. Installed wireless tether for her. That's it.
In the last 3 to 5 days, anyone who calls her it rings between 2-4 times an goes to voicemail. She gets no missed call. We've rebooted. Verified 4g is off. Tethering is killed.
However, in the past week or so she has been using wireless tethering more often while applying for jobs. She has also installed the voicemail update on her phone.
Does anyone have any issues similiar or any advice? I know there are setting in my epic dialer codes to check the setting to send calls to VM if data is active. I have no idea if EVO has this or not. Could it be extended use of the wifi tether? I imagine a lot of users use the tether app often and for much more time, she has been using it about 2-3 hours a night about 4 nights a week. The voicemail upgrade is where I'm thinking our issue is. I've talked her through the settings but cant see anything that is related.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
My unrooted evo does the none to 2 rings and goto voicemail. Its ticking my wife off when she calls me. I don't know exactly what's causing this, my thoughts tell me something with 4g devices in general. Network wise.
You can check from the home screen, menu, settings, call, then scroll down to DDTM mode, if it is checked uncheck it and see what happens.
We tried both checked and unchecked. reboots between changes. still same problem. we removed wifi tether as well. so the only change would be the voicemail update.
verified 4g was off. she doesnt have any auto sync enabled and usually background sync is off but we've tried with that on and off.
thank you for the tip though. very weird behavior. the evo has been rock solid since we got it.
That is pretty crazy, there is a setting in there somewhere to select your voicemail service. I'm in airplane mode on wifi right now so I can't locate it. Search through all the settings from menu/settings its in there somewhere. Maybe you can deselect sprint vvm.

ive had this a few times as well. try to update your profile.
Well. We did profile update. Nothing. Chkd voicemail provider and swapped both options. No luck. She ran across a setting in my contact info that was set to send to voicemail. It was on! She said its not like she could have done this in her purse or something. When u select/deselect the option u get prompted to confirm. Anyway she changed it and voila I get thru. Thanks for everyones help. This is a great group!

HA! Figures i was going to ask this but figured it was to simple of a solution! Glad you got it working!
When I see the wimax radio sleeping... (zzz on top of the 4g icon) what's going on? Do I not have data, am I on evdo, 1x, etc? Also when the phone is in standby (screen off and phone off the charger) what's going on? Is it the same if the phone was on the charger? I'm using Google voice, which requires a data connection for SMS... so I was just curious. Thanks.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
its the same as 3g. When its not being used, it goes dormant, until something wakes it up, even if the screen is off. the "zzz" thing is just samsungs way of being fancy.
HOWEVER...there are a few posts about some apps not waking the 4g connection properly, i think specifically google voice. Do a few searches and youll find em
I notice a lag when i use Facebook its slow to connect reconnect on 4G

Ahh OK. I wasn't sure. I had an evo 3d and of just turned the wimax radio on... then it would disconnect after a while...

Sorry! Misread that. Thought it said mms. To do that you have to integrate Google Voice into your Sprint (only Sprint) line. Either clear data on google voice and set it up that way... or goto google.com/voice nad choose a new number. Click use my mobile number and it will ask for your number. Just follow the instructions and click Sprint integration DO NOT PORT YOUR NUMBER or you will be charged.
Alright, 2 nights ago my phone stopped sending/receiving texts/calls, I do have a cloned phone, but the Samsung Intercept I used as a donor phone sits in a drawer with it's battery out and all, but I've recently began using it again since my WFS does not want to work as a phone anymore. 3G connects fine when using it for anything except calling or texting. When I text it loses signal then goes to 1x then fails to send, when calling 3G turns off, the icon goes away in the status bar, and I get "Your account could not be validated..." (My WFS had a bad ESN and I bought it off ebay, and the guy told me it was ready to activate so I paid $110 and wasn't about to try and re-sell it)
If anyone can help me out here It'd be a great help. I've read it could be a kernel problem, but I haven't downloaded a new kernel to flash it yet. I'm trying that tomorrow.
When you make calls the 3g icon is suppose to go away because the phone dosent require a data connection while placing a call, I would flash a new rom

Installed a stock ROM, simonsimons sense 3.5 and CM7. No luck though, I still get the same message. Last thing I remember doing before things stopped working properly was I uninstalled simtoolkit and smartcard service using nobloat. I was using simons sense 3.5 then.
Edit: The intercept works perfectly. So I know it's not my VM account.
Anyone.....?
Actually, Everything works except calls. I can text and use data and everything but calls say "Cannot verify account"
Edit: Got a new message when I tried to call again, It was error 16, so I looked it up and people said something about rooting phones and such, I'm going to try and unroot my phone and see what happens
look at build.prop and see "ro.ril.enable.dtm", set this to 1 if your network allows simultaneous transfer of Circuit switched (CS) voice and Packet switched (PS) data over the same radio channel (ARFCN)
im not sure with your case but maybe this can help

I actually do not have that line in my build.prop... is it supposed to be there on the MarvelC? Not sure if it's the same thing, but I did ##DATA# and enabled DDTM there. if it doesn't work I can always change it back to disabled, but it's worth a try...
Edit: Didn't work, guess i'll just call up VM and talk to them about it. From what people were saying it's either the rooting, or a security measure that happens randomly when doing a hard reset set up by sprint, and Sprint owns VM so... bleh.

Sounds like you app is having a problem with the securing of teh tunnel.
Could be any number of reasons.
NAT Translation, packet changes.
You might want to check out there support
I do not have that issue but I use to have problems with wifi assistant blocking open wifi networks as the open networks would connect but show no internet connection so I just learned to not use the wifi assistant at all.
I first reported this to Google when the Pixel was released. I spoke with them again today. After a rather lengthy call, the tech finally said that he was aware of my initial call, but that it is difficult for them to fix because it is "very uncommon". Happens to me every time the Assistant is connected.

I had reported my issue also and verizon got google on the phone with us and just discussed what the issue was and said they would get back with me but did they ? Answer is of course not nothing ever back and that was back in early November.
Yeah their cs sucks. I even upgraded to a 128 xl and had same issue on it and back then my open wifi would not work at all would connect but list no internet and the sign in accept screen for all the open networks the phones would not load them fully to hit accept.
Up until about a month ago I could not get any open wifi to work at all and still have issues at times and I have to hit forget network and re add sometimes even multiple times and even turn on or off wifi assistant and turn wifi on and off and even toggle airplane mode numerous times. And all these times my Unlocked Htc 10 would work great on the same open wifi networks.
And the stupid thing was these pixel xls always worked great on wifi networks that require a password, go figure they try to add more protection and just lock us out from using open networks so we have to use our data plans yeah verizon likes that part lol more money for them lol.

I did some reading back when I first got a Nexus 6P, and it stated that the secure assistant feature will keep you from using unsecured networks that have low reception or strength. I don't know of the legitimacy of this, and the only reason I researched it was because I had the issue of connected but no internet. I idea I walked away with was that the connection was not good enough for the VPN to actually do it's job? When I don't use the Secure Assistant on the network(I work at a hospital), the connection often drops off or I often get the sit and wait for things to load issue.

Hey have you ever tried Blue mail or type mail ? I have tried most including Aquamail and Blue mail and Type mail seem to be some of the best, they are some of the very few apps that have a lot of downloads and have a 4.6 and 4.7 rating. I just thought you might have an interest, if not and if you are happy with that app more power to ya
