Just got the phone, how is wimax managed - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

When I see the wimax radio sleeping... (zzz on top of the 4g icon) what's going on? Do I not have data, am I on evdo, 1x, etc? Also when the phone is in standby (screen off and phone off the charger) what's going on? Is it the same if the phone was on the charger? I'm using Google voice, which requires a data connection for SMS... so I was just curious. Thanks.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App

its the same as 3g. When its not being used, it goes dormant, until something wakes it up, even if the screen is off. the "zzz" thing is just samsungs way of being fancy.
HOWEVER...there are a few posts about some apps not waking the 4g connection properly, i think specifically google voice. Do a few searches and youll find em

I notice a lag when i use Facebook its slow to connect reconnect on 4G
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk

Ahh OK. I wasn't sure. I had an evo 3d and of just turned the wimax radio on... then it would disconnect after a while...

Sorry! Misread that. Thought it said mms. To do that you have to integrate Google Voice into your Sprint (only Sprint) line. Either clear data on google voice and set it up that way... or goto google.com/voice nad choose a new number. Click use my mobile number and it will ask for your number. Just follow the instructions and click Sprint integration DO NOT PORT YOUR NUMBER or you will be charged.

This is inaccurate. Simultaneous data and voice is not available unless connected to wifi or 4g. You are able to text and talk. I just had my share today.
Interesting, I thought because of the reasons below you could not text while talking. I just tried sending a text while talking... And it worked! I initially had wifi on, but disabled it during the convo. Tried sending the text again, successfully. Go figure. Maybe texts do go through, but you can't browse.
Sprint uses cdma. Voice uses this network for its transmissions. exts are sent using cdma (1x actually). If you're talking you can't be texting. Now if you're on 4g or wifi, texts may piggy back via that network instead.
I don't remember having a problem doing a text amd talking on the phone. Now I need to try this out.

Are you sure it isn't saying sent and then sending it after you hangup? read this http://htcsource.com/2010/03/sprint-disables-simultaneous-voice-and-data-for-htc-evo-4g/
I just tried it between my EVO and my blackberry (both on sprint)
I used the evo to call the bb, put them both on speaker and sent text messages between the phones.
On cdma SMS is transferred on the voice channel. If you attach a file and try to send it via SMS it becomes MMS and MMS uses data. I tried that and all I got was sending... when I hung up the voice call the picture was actually sent.

[Q] Multi-tasking sucks

Is it me or is the multi-tasking lacking in this samsung rom? With the HTC i could be on a call and still browse the web with wifi or take a pic or whatever I wanted to but not with this samsung phone. Also what the heck is up with not being able to use the phone at all which transferring data to/from the computer? Is this something that the developers will address or should I turn in this phone for the HTC 3D?
i dont know what you are talking about i browse the web and take phone calls all the time... are you hitting your home button in the phone app?
2nd that, no problems no complaints.
I don't know what you are talking about. All of that stuff works just fine for me.
If you wanna go for the EVO3D go for it, I had 3 of 'em. All of them had horribly weak 2G/3G radios. Bright screen, washed out. Narrow form factor (some like it, I hated it). The resolution was fantastic. The camera was craptastic, at best. Great dev scene, if you are into 50 themed version of the stock rom (though there are a bunch of great roms for it...most aren't).
All-in-all a great phone, but, I have never regretted the switch...not once.
If you don't mind the 16:9 screen and the super bright LED buttons ( which can be fixed with root) evo3d isn't a bad phone. I never had any radio issues, but it just wasn't right for me to hang on to.
I do all that stuff all the time. Pressing your home button during a call turns your notification bar green, and you can do whatever you want

Is data connectivity gone when 4g is in "idle" state?

I have been asking this on Sprint forums for a while, I searched here and didn't really see this issue. It's a pretty concerning issue for me and I'm wondering if it's common because I know it would bother everyone.
My first post was basically saying I wasn't receiving push notifications, after doing some testing I posted this.
Copy/Paste from Sprint forums:
As a follow up:
I have noticed that the data doesn't come through the the 4g is idle.(Zzz)
I tested it with two applications:
Whatsapp, have a friend send me a message with 4g active, message came through. I had the same friend send me one with 4g in idle mode and the message does not come through at all, even if I browse the internet and make 4g idle again, the message will only come through after I open whatsapp again.
Beejive and eBuddy messanging apps: I opened my own account and tested from my PC with the same scenarios as before, I get the same results.
It seems my phone is losing a data connection all together when 4g goes into idle, now this can't be right can it?
Looks like the NS has the same issue:
http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/70874
This can't be right can it? I mean completely shut off my phones data connection when the 4g radio is sleeping? How does this make sense..
Anyone?

Kinda ... I believe it still works in the background for any app that might need internet connectivity. The time out sucks cause is so short but it is done, I believe, for the purpose of saving battery, like if no app is in need of data then it shuts down. Also, there are codes to make this time-out take longer to kick in, somewhere buried in these threads.
Thanks for the reply. Yea I saw some options, but raising the time out would probably kill my battery.
For now keeping on 3g seems to be my best bet..

Usually when a radio goes to sleep there is something called a rx interrupt that will wake it up when there is a packet received. This is based on my limited experience working with radios as an electrical engineering student. I don't know. how the specific wimax radio in this phone works.

I feel like this is a deal breaker
I get this all the time. When driving, I like to listen to shoutcast stations.
If I lose signal for more than like 10 seconds, the 4G idles and never reconnects unless I either toggle 4g off/on or tap a shoutcast station to wake the 4g back on. The 3G struggles to reconnect to the station usually and times out.
It is pretty irritating. My best friend always teases me for getting an android phone over his iPhone 4S PO$ on AT&T. lol

I'm keeping it on 3g right now, that should give you the same speeds of his 4s. I'll turn on 4g when I know I need it. So far 3g hasn't been slow enough for me to even have to turn it on.
I like this phone a lot and considered returning it but there isn't a phone as powerful so I decided to deal with it for now.
I went to sprint but the tech wasn't there, the counter guy tried to tell me it's the same with any 4g phone but I really don't think so. I think people would get rly pissy if messages didn't come in for hours.
I'm going to see the tech and test it with another 4g phone, if it doesn't happen I'll ask him to open a ticket and MAYBE that'll get something done.
there are a few tweaks that you can do in the epst menu that help out with the 4g connection going dormant. let me see if i can find the thread
I looked into setting the "sleep" time to 300 seconds, haven't done it yet but I'd be worried about it sucking my battery too fast.
I just feel it should work in sleep mode and I want to see what other sprint 4g phones do, if it's only with this phone I want to at least try to get it up to Sprint as a bug(event though most likely nothing will happen.
Someone on El13 said they didn't get this behavior in another thread.. I've tested it on stock EG30 and Ek20
Okay, so I'm not crazy. I thought I noticed this on both my OG Epic and the Touch. Mostly for me it manifests in not getting push notifications while on 4G in idle. That's been my main complaint with it. So I mostly don't use it, although I'm rarely anywhere with 4G anyway, so it's irrelevant.

I have not tried gtalk but I think it would have the same issue.
I have tried and all of them fail with the same issue:
Whatsapp
Gmail app (I don't use Samsungs stock email)
Beejive messenger
ebuddy messenger
let me know what you find.. I just can't believe this isn't a big bug - something tells me it might be Samsung's radios.
I went ahead and changed my idle time to 300... The phone doesn't go to zzz anymore so far so that should let me stay on 4g. That should give me 5 hours of the phone not going to sleep so during a normal day I shouldn't have this issue.. Maybe when I'm sleeping I won't see my notifications I will leave it on for now..
My DL speeds with 4g are like 7-8k so that's MUCh better than 3g for me. Also we'll see about battery drain.
Yes I have this problem. I also have the same issue with leaving WIFI on all the time. Everything is delayed unless you just used the phone.

John,
Another example of 'push' is using imap with gmail account. I use both k9 and maildroid using the imap connection method. When a message arrives at the google server it should 'push' it to our phones in a short turn around time frame. I've seen this vary from immediate to 45 minutes on the server end. The usage of 'pop' of course is the 'pull' method when polling is necessary.

300 in IdleSleep is actually 5 minutes, not 5 hours (I'm pretty sure the value is in seconds).
That being said, I haven't seen any push notification issues on 4G on EG30 or EL13. I regularly get Gtalk and Gmail notifications all the time while idle on 4G. The only thing that seems slow on push notification is the built in email client. But I'm not sure if that is a client or Hotmail issue. I wonder if your issue is region specific.
From what I read it is minutes.. But that could all be wrong I guess

Sometimes it's good to stay away of keyboard. Especially when you have no clue on what you are talking about.
Grey data bars means that you're not signed in to Google servers at all, not just to Google Talk service.
What if in past two weeks he have saved 50 new contacts and created 100 calendar events? It's ok now, but if he will flash new ROM all these contacts/calendar events will go missing as they never reached Google backup servers...
So, there's nothing to worry about, right?

So how can you make it stay connected? More importantly, how can a ROM change cause it to drop connection to google servers, and how could it be repaired?

Again the grey bars has nothing to do with Google sync service. Gmail use push there's no need to be connect to anything but C2DM which every phone connects to since froyo.

I can tell you that when I have grey bars, everything related to Google stops working, and resumes working when blue data bars return. The Market, Reader, Gmail, YouTube, Listen, Maps, Talk, etc all stop working while browser and other web accessing apps are just fine. So to me, it appears Google routes there traffic differently because of authentication than other apps on the phone. So I would say it is safe to say, grey bars means no Google services.

This is all a service thing. What you are probably experiencing is your phones service cutting out and therefor you are losing connection to the internet (Including the Google services) then when you get internet back your bars are gray until your phone can confirm it is connected to Google services then once it gets confirmation your bars turn blue.

Well all Google services go over your network then go straight to Google's servers so if you cannot access Google servers you cannot access the apps that require access to Google servers. Just like if Facebook was down I would not be able to access it on my phone but everything else would still work fine.

It's not my phone signal in my case, it's actually my wifi icon that keeps going grey even though it's full signal strength and there's nothing wrong with the router or broadband service. It's the ROM change that caused the issue since restoring a previous backup restores service. It's intermittent, sometimes it'll work and other times the icon goes grey. Just wondering how it could happen and how it can be fixed.

What ROM are you having issues on? This may be a stupid question but if you have a CDMA GNexus is it possible that you are using a GSM ROM or vice versa?
I'm actually using a HTC sensation but saw this thread on tapatalk so thought I'd ask since the issue isn't device specific, it could happen on anything.
Basically I'm using an ics ROM on it which worked fine, but the most recent version is causing me to have intermittent grey wifi icon and loss of internet connection as a result. Just wondering what could be done to repair it instead of just reverting to the previous version, so thought I'd ask.

I remain signed out of Google Talk most of the time, and the bars are still blue, so the color of them has nothing to do with GTalk, as others have said, and it only deals with being connected to Google itself for the other services your phone uses.

v 0.4.2.72 is the older version and still should be using your Data Plan. For those of us on unlimited data... this is preferable. Yes, I have a backup copy.

Oh haha, for real this update uses cell phone's minute instead of data plan?
I thought this update just Improved the reliability of SMS delivery??
Can any1 confirms this?
Too late for me, I already took the update, I did read where it says it now uses plan minutes, would love get a copy of the old apk though.

Don't let Google Voice update on anyone's cell phone! The new update uses cell phone minutes instead of your data plan!

This is actually good for me. I am on a limited Data plan and never come close to using my voice minutes.
No, they apparently changed more than that too.. The app I've been collaborating with a Dev on, Messaging + Google Voice, is kinda jacked up now with the new update. They did something to block 3rd party notifications, as far as we can tell. It works fine on. 72 tho.
Here's. 4.2.72 if anyone wants it (original)

And my themed version if anyone wants that

It's ALWAYS used plan minutes. I don't understand what you guys are talking about. The only way you didn't is if you made calls over data/Wifi using GrooveIP or some VoIP app that used your Voice number.

The update said overseas calls always did. As of this update, US calls will join that. They have rewritten the update description since the forums started talking about it.

Subscribed. There is a bit of contradictory info out there as to whether GV uses mins or Data on WiFI.

It uses minutes. It always has. I'm telling you. It uses your carrier's minutes, not Google Voice minutes. The My T-Mobile app tells me how many minutes I've used and it always goes down when I make calls through my Voice number (which is my primary number). I have the Voice app set to "Make All Calls Through Voice."
It has ALWAYS used your plan minutes. You guys just don't understand how it works.
Your phone calls Google using your carrier-assigned number ----> Google picks up and connects your call to whoever you actually dialed ("John") ----> John gets the call and sees your Voice number

I can confirm that Google Voice has always used minutes, unless setup through an application like GrooveIP. I'm not sure where you guys are getting that it didn't use minutes before...
I didn't say I believe GV doesn't or hasn't used carrier mins, just that I have come across pieces of info that say one thing, and others that say another.
I understand GV uses carrier mins.
However, I am not clear whether it uses carrier mins when connected to a WiFi LAN.

Again, it always does. Calls go through GSM/CDMA. Unless you're using a VoIP app like GrooveIP to make calls via Voice, you're using minutes.

Either the first thread got moved, or this is the second thread made by the same person. I'm not aiming to insult the OP, but please do some research beforehand. Because what Google did was clarify what was already there. You're just confusing people.
Only one making sense here. They are legally barred from doing that. One has to use grooveip to make voip calls.

Ok, so some say that GV now uses plan minutes to route call to overseas numbers where as before it used data, am I right?
I call a Canadian cell number everyday and my 1500 Allotted anything minutes still shows 0 used, so what exactly is the dispute?
