Insurance question - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So this may sound dumb but I'm wondering if i have to get the rom and mods off of my phone before i do an insurance claim on it? Or do I just have to make it look stockish? Will they really do an extensive check on it? Thx guys!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

Is it a risk your willing to take to have the claim denied and warranty void? Its very possible that they will see that it's not stock. If at all possible, just flash stock EG30 on it via Odin. If your supposed to get it back, do a nandroid first, so you can restore it later.

Will they check the Odin count?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

Depends, some will check the count and some might not notice it. Kind of a 50/50 shot on that one.

Most Sprint techs aren't even aware of Odin mode, let alone how to check for root. You should be fine.

shouldn't there be something like the moss act law where they have to prove your mod caused the error. Like my theme did not cause the screen to crack
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App

Most of them are super unaware haha i turned in my evo 4g and the intern noticed it and told me to flash the stock zip haha. Samething happened again when i turned in my et4g with the same intern haha

Insurance claim, all your points are invalid. You don't have to do anything for insurance and paying the deductible. Only if your trying to get sprint to fix it.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

I had to take my phone to best buy and have it sent out after I dropped/cracked it. I did flash it back to stock, but they never said anything to me about the odin count.

Sprints official policy is to exchange rooted devices. If you go to a Sprint service and repair center they should replace your phone. The reasoning behind it is that they don't know who actually rooted the phone. In my expwrienxe if you say your friend or brother did it they will exchange it.

[Q] How do i get my phone replaced with a new one?

My GPS is borked. I have TEP and insurance. I was wondering if there was a way to get a new phone without having a refurbished one. And i do not want to pay a deductible
Should i go in with my phone soft bricked or just say GPS doesnt work?
Pretty sure you have to pay it. Make a appointment they might fix it
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
How did some get away without a deductible?
Take it to a real sprint store not a 3rd party one. Make sure you are on a stock un-rooted rom, explain the issue and if its jot something they can fix you will be ordered a replacement device. That should be a warranty covered situation, no cost to you.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
way more than likely tho you will get a refurb. good luck. but do not soft brick it.
They give refurbs for this device now?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
ya I got a refurb back in december. the sprint employee who gave me the device said he didn't think it was. but when I looked in the epst menu it said the phone was reconditioned. so ya.
****. How was the condition of the refurb?

I agree with above . Put a stock from on there . Unroot. Definitely a warranty issue.

Replacement Phones (Root related)

OK, so i dropped my phone and the screen cracked and im getting a replacement phone sent. No big deal. But my phone is rooted and clearly has a new rom on it. For people who have gone through the process do you usually unroot and revert to stock before sending it back or do you just send it back rooted and let them worry about it?
I just dont want them to take away insurance because I rooted when this isnt even a software problem since im just replacing it because of a cracked screen.
What I did with my evo when I needed a new one was just put a stock rom on it and that was it I still had S-off to
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
Well i went to the sprint store the other day and i asked the same question and they said since your going through the insurance company they dont care. But then again when does a sprint rep known to say the truth
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
when the screen is cracked you have to file with asurian phoneclaim.com they don't care about root only in store repair does but the screens have not been covered by in store for over a year now
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Ok, thanks. The process isnt anything huge it would have been no problem. But didnt feel like doing it if I didnt have to. Looks like ill just send it back to em the way it is. Porbebly just full wipe and a fresh rom install so none of my info is on it and call it a day
When I warranteed out my phone, I just odined stock eg30 and used a jig. The jig isn't really necessary, but I would flash a stock to be safe, it takes only 5 minutes.

you are good
I've got a friend that works for a Sprint repair center. He said that as long as the insurance claim is for something other than software, you should be good.

Tmobile manufacture warranty?

I just got my galaxy s2 a month ago and was wondering, if I get a hardware defect or brick, will Tmobile replace It as long as its the first year on contract? That is what happened about 4 years ago with my other phone but I would like to know if Tmobile will still do this.
Thanks

Rooting voids your warranty. If they can *see* its been rooted, you will be charged a restocking fee of $400+
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
It's best you go through Samsung, from eat I've heard, as they not really check if you're phones been rooted

Well...i got mine about a couple months. They told me they could replace the phone only if phone has not been software or hardware modified..as i understand...only if they see phone is like when they gave it to u @ very first time. There is a way to restore ur phone and unroot it. So make sure u dowload the .tar file and keep it in PC in case u need to flash stock rom...via Odin before send phone to replace it....or any other similar situation. Follow the link at the bottom.
If u pay insurance Samsung will replace ur phone even if its stolen or lost. In that case u have to pay $150 in order to get a new one. Sorry about my english. ...just trying to help. Good luck.

I've heard of T-Mobile replacing the phone at the cost of the $130 for Tier 3 Smart Phones, but Samsung replacing them? I haven't heard of that.
Hmm...I voided my options the day I got mine, Lol.

I bought the insurance.
Thing is,everything in writing,it seems nothing is covered.
I spoke with tmo,and the insurance, and they both said "no matter what happens (excluding rooting/roms) "
Is covered. But in writing, nothing they said seems to be covered.
From my understanding tmo will replace the phone if its less than a year. But tmo is in financial hardship so who knows what they will do.
Im still waiting on a $30 credit for stuff I never purchased.
Forgive my English...
But,Im just illiterate.
Just go back to stock.its easy.

Samsung warranties their devices for 1 year, it has nothing to do with tmobile. Return your device to stock and get a new one if there is a problem. If it's hard bricked tmobile cant tell what you've done to it, anyways. They send it to sammy and they jtag it and it goes back into circulation as a refurb.

But note, the flash counter is only changed when you flash roms through Odin. Any roms flashed through Clockwork Recovery will not add to the counter. Just adding on to what you said.

This is somewhat true. Some custom kernels such as cm kernel can add to the counter even if flashed through CWM.

Check your counter, sometimes it trips and sometimes it doesn't. Very simple to check yourself, as no one can tell you what's on your phone

If you have to send it to repair just flash a ROM which have Stock Recovery and use Triangle Away to reset the counter. Check on Dev Section for more info.

I got told my best buy doesn't care about root... But it's fairly simple and quick to unroot and flash stock rom and recovery, which I would do to be safe anyways.
Sent from Pluto.
I had black tie insurance and best buy doesn't care if the phone is modded (only iphones)
Just Google foxfi, sprint blocks it in the market, but I believe it can be found on their website....no need to root for free tethering
Confirmed. I returned 3 Epics rooted. They never even confirmed the complaints. They just got me another one within 2 days.
Yeah I tried foxfi and it's not supported for s3 yet.

I got my phone about a week ago. I purchased the best buy protection because sprint is getting outrageous for their total protection and with the ded going up to $150 its really not worth it. When I got it the Woman at best buy Mobile told me that it didnt matter if the phone was rooted or not, it would still be covered.
I work at best buy and we do not care if the phone is rooted and tryIng to use the protectIon plan. If your rooted and trying to exchange within 30 days because u messed the phone up, we can say no. That rarely happens though because if u did F up, u probably bricked and phone doesn't turn on lol. Did have a guy delete his modem or chnaged some settIngs In ##data# or something he could not get service no matter what I tried. Couldn't exchange his phone for him lol because he was rooted and my manager saw that.

Again...a misconception of the deductible...
If your phone is lost or stolen...damaged beyond repair, water damage etc it's $150 done through asurion
Minor mishaps as discussed here you walk in they confirm, you come back two days later and pick up replacement phone...no fee
And sprint policy currently covers rooted phones
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
If you bring it in for software issues they might decline sending it out for rapid exchange(depending on the mobile associate's or Geek Squad Agent's knowledge of rooted phones), but if it's hardware damage from accidental they likely won't care. Just remember you'll have to re-root when you get a phone back since they don't give you the same phone.

yeah, i know exactly how the TEP works. take it to a service center and they will fix if they can, replace if they cant as long as no signs of physical damage, lost stolen or water, then like you said, have to go through Assurion. I just dont think its worth it now that they raised both the cost of TEP AND the deductible.
I didnt know, however, that Sprint would also cover rooted devices. I have heard stories of people being turned away for repair on rooted phones.
They don't seem to care about anything. I've sent phones with stock root and also custom roms for repair and they've never said a word. Say what you will about geek squad but the black tie on cell phones is more than worth it. Especially if you have teenagers

Yes, it's not illegal. But it does void your claim on the warranty, and if the rep was having a bad day, he could have easily turned you away for rooting.
What I have found is that although it is not " illegal " . It does not necessarily mean that you will not get a hard time about it. I have had very different experiences even in the same store. Both negative, and positive. So I've learned it's better to remove as many reasons for people to give you a hard time as possible.

Well I don't think being rooted would have any affect on a cracked screen. However I would restore and unroot to be safe. Never know if some pissed of employee wants to take is anger out on you and flag something on your account. Or put notes that could hurt future insurance issues.

Also had the support person at the store (not a 3rd party store, but an authorized service center) in KC tell me the same thing. So I just don't worry about it now.

look, its best to stay on the safe side... make a nandroid backup and unroot your phone... its your best bet... it is easily the safest way to go
