Hi, i am very new at all of this, i have never even rooted a phone before. my question is which rom do i want... there are like 10-15 of them, i want one thats fast, i hear that touchwiz really slows everything down so i guess one that gets rid of that. everyone talks about the pure google experience, which one(s) would give me that. but also with features like the cool crt thing, and the the toggles in the notification bar (4g,wifi) there was one with alot of different ones...
then like 2 weeks ago, the infamous bubby got ics working but there werent any fixes because apparently he was banned... so i guess, cant really expect anything new to come from there... is anyone else going to continue it, or start over? is bubby's stable enough?
also, one last thing, please dont laugh, but if someone could just tell me how the procedure works, i can watch the how to videos but the order is my question, first you root (with "odin"), then you flash a rom?
thanks

there are probably a lot more than 10-15. there could also be ROMs in other places (sites) for your device. the rule is, that you have to check ROMs yourself. what someone else finds great may not run so smoothly on your hardware. you just have to try them yourself. there are different 'flavors' of ROMs, because the user experience is subjective. sticking with the 'flavor' metaphor, do you think a group of 1000 people could tell you what flavor of ice cream you would like 'best'? of course not, people like different things. the only thing you can do is try them out, and decide for yourself.
I'm not positive, but I think almost all of the ICS builds you'll find will likely be 'alpha' or 'beta', at best. Which means that they're not really stable enough for daily use yet. right now, ICS is more of a proof of concept and for devs who are working hard to get it ready to be ported to your phone. asking 'Are we there yet?', isn't going to make it arrive any faster.
and to your last question. that's about right. when you've rooted, then you can flash. read, read, read. then when you feel ready...flash away.
hope this helps. good luck!
thanks for your help... yeah, i guess ive just got to check them all out... maybe try a couple different ones..

that's the best route. also, you can check youtube by searching for the name of a ROM you're interested in. sometimes you'll find walkthru videos that can help you eliminate some of them without wasting the time and effort of flashing. or maybe you'll see the video and say 'THAT'S the rom I want!!!'

I have been scanning hundreds of XDA pages for about an hour now and I'm totaly sick of it, I'm not a person who would normaly start a thread for something like this but I don't know anymore.
I'm currently on HTC's official 1.93 ROM, its not very bad but I think my Diamond deserves better, so I want a custom ROM. My problem? There seem to be hundreds of different ones, what one is best for me?
My main goal is a significant speed bump, I like the overal functionality, it just isn't very fast.
I'd like to maintain the official looks as much as possible but get the best possible speed boost, what's best for me? I don't care about language realy, as long as its english or dutch. English prefered.
To be fair, i hope you realize that after this post you will probably have lots of people moaning at you about doing your own research etc etc
PM me and i will discuss this with you!
OK so its a little frustrating to get the info you need fast, i understand.
read the flashing tutorial
get unsigned hard SPL and install
pick ROM, any rom will do. i recommend Panosha, Swiftblade, or Duttys. These guys ARE the most experience chefs! BAR NONE
then just try them out.
Yes you will have re-flash & then re-flash again & again until you find the best ROM.
This is the only way IMHO to answer your own question.
and this is what EVERYONE else does or is doing!
So, join the club & welcome aboard.
be warned though it is very addictive!!!!
The whole flashing process is not an issue, I'm tech savy enough to figure that out, especially if its as well documented as it is on on here. My problem is, I don't have the time (and to be honest, nor do I have the will) to get realy deep into this.
I want my phone to keep its stock looks and stock functionality, but it has to be a lot faster. After that, I'm out of here a hell of a lot faster than I came in.
All I need is for someone to tell me what rom suits the needs I just described the best.
I have the same problem. Also none of these roms seem to work like it should. They have a lot of bugs.
if its about being fats and stick near to the original i would suggest AZTOR fitting your needs
So you are here, we have to deliver to you, and you go again, if I read that right??

"Lots of Bugs". That is a generalisation and is plain wrong. Do your research an you will find several ROMs that are bug free.
The best way to get bugs is to load a brand new ROM in the initial excitement after it has been released. Cool your heels for a few days after release and then download the revised versions. The main ROM developers all tend to have some excellent, stable bug free versions floating around.

Yes, sir, you definetly read that right. Opposed to some people around here customising my phone is not my hobby, its kind of a must. I did NOT my buy my phone to mess around with it, I bought my phone to use it on business trips and such and keep my agenda etc etc, in other words, for its functionality. I am a way too busy man nowadays to involve myself in things like this.
So yes, I just updated to the recommended ROM, and it works perfectly. It's a noticable speed bump, as I requested. Thanks a lot for the great help!

Well here is a suggestion. Seeing that you are way too busy...
How about you PAY someone to do this for you? Just put together a list of what you are after and offer to paypal someone some amount, say $20-$50 to match you with a ROM and a set of apps to meet your needs. That way you save your precious time and someone else gets a reward for their efforts to help you. Win all around.
Well you guys seem to be very busy people and need your fun for important stuff!
If you want a rom that isnt buggy ( I havent found one bug thou ) and thats stable why not just keep it to the original rom. It might be a bit slower but atleast you have a working phone!

Basically what that means is, people who have the ability to cook do so for free and we all get to try what they make and and tell them bugs, which they fix.
Someone like yourself, who is pushed for time for whatever reason, and cannot look about and find the things they want from a rom can request a custom built rom, but as you can expect, since it is custom, and you will be the only one with the rom a "donation" is required for the cooks time.
If you dont want to pay, grab one of the roms available from here and do what everyone else does, try a few roms, then pic your fav, and stay with that brand.
I personally like to try all roms, but i keep going back to SwiftBL, if for instance i decide i want a custom rom i would PM SwiftBlade and offer him $30-$50 and detail my needs.
Hope this helps

Well thanks for the reply, but I wasn't requesting a custom made rom especially for me, I'm asking what stock one is best for me. And I got my answer.

With 'a lot of bugs' I mean that all of the roms I tried have some sort of irritating bug that floats up almost immidiately, like makes me think whether they even test their stuff.
The alarm plainly doesn't work. Or the browser exits/crashes when going into landscape. Or it simply crashes a lot.
Please, don't understand me wrong, I respect the effort and it's ME downloading those custom roms so it's me who's looking for trouble I just like having the latest version of software, all my devices or always up to date and I'm frustrated that htc itself doesn't release enough updates.
What I want is a rom that is simply standard but has the latest version of official htc apps. Maybe some registry tweaks for speed. But stability and no bugs is very important.
I'll try aztor but if that doesn't work out I'm going back to latest stock rom and just upgrade opera
Hey guys, sorry if this has already been brought up or not. If this has, I'm very sorry but it's early in the morning and I had a bad dream, lol.
I'm excited about the official GB update and I know the actual OTA update has everything working, like the brightness and camcorder working, but I got an email from Evo Hacks and they mentioned the rooting method being different. I really don't feel like dealing with all that. I'm dealing with a lot of medical issues and haven't really been feeling very well lately. I'm too excited and can't stand having too late anymore.
I know there are many ROMs out there running the update already but I've also seen things about brightness problems and camcorder controls not working. Can anybody tell me if there are any ROMs that have EVERYTHING working and would be sweet to start off with? I'd like to find one really stacked with goodies like sd speed tweak and definitely the camcorder working. I don't know if I could live without it, lol.
Once again, I apologize if I sound lazy, that's not the case at all. Thanks everyone, I do appreciate it.

What you're looking for doesn't exist yet, in a full release. There are some Beta's, but you have to give the Dev's more than a day to cook up something that's fully functional, tested, re-tested, bugs worked out, etc....

I remember skimming through the development forum, the night it was released, and I know there were several new ROMs launched that evening. I was in such a hurry that I wasn't paying attention as to whether or not any of them were fully functional. I don't really have time to check right now but I could have swore that there was at least one. Who knows with my memory these days, lol.
I just figured I'd throw the question out there. If there aren't, maybe once some are released fully functional, somebody will remember about my thread and give me a heads up.
Im looking for a rom to fill my needs, A rom with working wifi tether, usb tether, s-beam, Wifi direct, overclocking capabilities and maybe some of the stock TW sg3 features like screen on when viewing screen, call when you put to ear and things like that.
I know im asking a lot but I figured I'd ask to see what everyone else is running with high demands like me.
( by the way, I'm used to running aosp roms since I dont really care for TW rom lay outs, Unless thats a simple fix like running a custom launcher?)
Any input is greatly appreciated!

Before this gets locked by our mods.... go into dev section, check out roms (whats working/not and screenies are in thread. And can skim a page or two (towards end) see what issues are popping up.) Find one, flash and give a test drive and form your own opinion. Everyone uses phone differently and has different experiance with roms. So try for yourself. I run and personally love the peoples rom. If ya dont like a rom wipe and flash another. Rinse and repeat till you find your happy place.
Btw, not trying to come off like a d!ck. So dont take it that way. We seem to get a lot of these threads. All end up locked.
Lock me up please!

I have browsed around and even tried SlimRom which is a great rom but some of the descriptions for new roms dont give all the information ones looking for and screenies arent provided with every rom.
I didnt think my question was too vague, I listed some of the things I was looking for in a rom, Just thought some people out there had the same needs and could refer me to what their using.

I just flashed the people's rom a couple days ago and it has been good so far. Sounds like it's got everything you are wanting.

Hi.
I can find the Alpha CM10.1 in dev section for PRO. Was wondering if there is a stable 10.1 for the ARC S LT18i or any JB based ROM for that matter?
On that note, would you consider the CM10 and ICS based ROM's to be stable? As in daily driver worthy?
Not asking "which ROM is best" etc... rather just asking if you consider them as stable, in general. I am considering UltimaHD even thought it's ICS based, but really wanted to go up to JB if there is anything stable and worthy out there. I don't really care if it's AOKP, AOSP or Stock based.

Yes, there is, use the Search tool. Then go read the topic and you will find a lot of information about the ROM from people, who have actually used it.

Oh, joy! A snarky reply! How wonderful. But you are right. I should have considered that "search" button in the firs.... Wait a God damn minute! I DID!
As opposed to your usual noob, I actually took the time to search. My research (although I am sure flawed) is what led me to conclude that maybe UltimaHD would be the best choice for me. Also, I found numerous ROMs. Searching for 4.1.2 in titles only returned a bucketload of results for ICS ROMs (yes, that's right... you can even try it if you want). In those I did find mention to 1 MIUI ROM and 1 [rom][update jb][4.1.2]arc/s v06. MIUI is not something I'm interested in using right now. The second, I can't quite figure out if it's a daily driver or not. Also, many of the ROMs seem to be ICS/JB mixes.
The ARC S is not my phone. I have a SIII. I'm trying to compile the necessary info to decide what ROM to flash on the device (which actually belongs to my wife). Not having much time to flash as many ROMs as I do on my SIII, I thought maybe I'd rather ask the people that have actually used and tested available ROMs, rather than flashing one now and having my wife tell me it's no good a few days later and having to do it all over again. So far I have managed to figure out how to unlock bootloader (I hope, because I'll only be doing it tomorrow evening), root the device using flashtool (still not sure if it'll work on stock 4.0.4 but from what I have read so far, I gather it will), and flash a recovery. Am still a bit unclear on all the boot.img flashing that goes on and why it's necessary. Seems to me this has to do with the data partition. Of course I could be wrong.
So again, sorry if I "didn't" use the search button first. I'll try and not have it happen again. Oh, and thanks so much for the help. /end sarcasm

Again, I didn't quite understand the point of starting a new thread so myself found it annoying to see you asking what you have, "Not asking "which ROM is best" etc", not directly you might not be but essentially, it is what you're asking, and some of us are sick of seeing such threads posted and this sums up why...

I can't agree more. Which ROM is the fastest? Which kernel is best? etc. etc. It's like walking into a bar and asking which drink is the best. You can't get your answer because every person around has a personal taste and looking for something different.
Going further. Telling that one ROM is better than another is quite disrespectful to developers. Most of them spent much time making their work for FREE and one guy can easily depreciate their work.
If you're looking for answer - try. It's easy and making it on your own is much funnier than looking for spoon feeding in every situations. Thinking is fun

Yes, you are right. I still have another thread going. But I didn't want to muddy the waters. I want to keep it separate. The focus of this thread was to understand if there is a working, for daily use, JB ROM out there. For ICS I am already pretty convinced Ultimate is the way to go as far as what I am looking for. Your reply in the other thread was most appreciated and was actually what I had considered, before I got the "go ahead" from the wife. Again, thanks for the tip. But now the circumstances have changed and flashing a ROM is now an option. For this reason I am just trying to figure out if I should opt for aosp 4.1.2, 4.2.1 or CM 10(.1) based on user experience when it comes to stability and broken features or bugs. I do not need anyone to tell me which ROM is best. I have already been told to avoid "which ROM is best" threads and I intend to do as told. But honest to God that's not what I want here. Just opinions regarding aosp 4.1.2, 4.2.1 or CM 10(.1). In general. Don't need anyone saying X rom is better or whatnot. And I am terribly sorry if this is how it came across. As for trying ROM's, I'm all for it. I have Obsessive Rom Disorder myself and am a total flashaholic. I flash ROMs to my phones like every other day at the latest. But as you pointed out my other thread, you can see that flashing dozens of roms to the ARC is not an option. I am trying to find what is or isn't stable so I can decide on the path to go, and then choose a ROM based on that. Imagine I flash 4.1.2 only to find it FC's a lot using camera app or whatever. Or that wifi is unstable and she really relies on wifi daily for work. Or anything else. I check the ROM threads for known bugs, but many a rom here on XPERIA ARC sub-forums don't list bugs, either because they have non, or because OP's don't post them. I tend to think it's probably the former and not the latter, but since I am quite used to seeing some sort of buglist, I am not sure and so, of course, hesitant.
Please, please don't think I mean to be disrespectful. Or rude. Or just plain annoying. It's just that I really can't afford to get this wrong. I need to get this right first time round (or at least within the first couple of tries) so my wife can continue to work with the phone and not come to me saying "this and that don't work".
I appreciate the community. I have learned a whole lot from you guys. I support devs when I can through donations (small for sure, but I tend to donate what I can afford from time to time). And I answer whenever I think I can help and contribute. It's just I get so annoyed when I see people just assuming I didn't search.
Sorry for the rant.

I understand your need to get it right but you'd had some good responses in the other thread which you could of followed up, and unfortunately it obviously has come across as annoying, but we're a forgiving community. The best thing to do when trying to decide is to read through the last few pages of a ROM thread and see what's being reported, just because a ROM might work right to begin with, unknown conflicts might start to arise when the Phones been used for a prolonged period of time, an update to a certain app breaks something etc, and while for many it may not be an issue because they'll just come and get a fix or wait for an update to something that might not bother them but bothers the next user, I wouldn't go the custom ROM route, but she's your Wife at the end of the day so it's not my balls on the line.

I hear you. And I have succesfuly managed to root the phone. Am now in the process of doing a Titanium Backup of the device and a NANDROID too. I don't really want to flash custom. I'd rather tweak as you suggested, but to be honest, I have no idea where to begin with this device.
Not sure if this is a touchy subject but, does anybody know what happened to baked rom? It seems as if they just fell off the face of the earth....
Again, sorry if i shouldnt go in to this, i just cant find any info on them, and their wesite/ G+ hasnt been touched in months. To bad, was a great rom....
I don't think there is anything touchy about it. TravP just took a break. I remember the gap between Baked 8 and 9 was forever, and by that time a new Android (4.2?) was released. Then someone leaked BB9 to the forums when they shouldn't have and he decided to just scrap it. I still have a test build running on my Nexus S I think lol. I swear I saw someone post a screenshot of Trav running BB11 (might have even been trav himself on twitter) not too long ago, so maybe he will jump back in to things eventually. Baked is still the favorite ROM I've had the chance to run!
Thanks for the info, didnt know about that. That sucks it had to end that way, but i understand why he did it. It was also my fav rom. I would still run it if i could. I hope he does jump back into it. It would make me a pretty happy camper

Trust me you wouldn't be the only one! On the GNex we had one of the longest threads in the forum going. Then our device maintainer got banned for something stupid and they locked the thread. (Mind you, this is probably 10 months after the last official release lol)So most of us just left XDA. My S4 isn't even rooted because I can't run AOKP or an AOKP variant. Damn I miss those days!
Ya, alot has changed in the past year or two, but it will get better
Completely OT but I figure why make a new thread. Couple questions for you. 1. Which N7 do you have? 2. Do you know of any ROMs for Deb that have a mutiwindow feature?
