[Q] 10.1 for Arc S LT18i - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
I can find the Alpha CM10.1 in dev section for PRO. Was wondering if there is a stable 10.1 for the ARC S LT18i or any JB based ROM for that matter?
On that note, would you consider the CM10 and ICS based ROM's to be stable? As in daily driver worthy?
Not asking "which ROM is best" etc... rather just asking if you consider them as stable, in general. I am considering UltimaHD even thought it's ICS based, but really wanted to go up to JB if there is anything stable and worthy out there. I don't really care if it's AOKP, AOSP or Stock based.

Yes, there is, use the Search tool. Then go read the topic and you will find a lot of information about the ROM from people, who have actually used it.

Oh, joy! A snarky reply! How wonderful. But you are right. I should have considered that "search" button in the firs.... Wait a God damn minute! I DID!
As opposed to your usual noob, I actually took the time to search. My research (although I am sure flawed) is what led me to conclude that maybe UltimaHD would be the best choice for me. Also, I found numerous ROMs. Searching for 4.1.2 in titles only returned a bucketload of results for ICS ROMs (yes, that's right... you can even try it if you want). In those I did find mention to 1 MIUI ROM and 1 [rom][update jb][4.1.2]arc/s v06. MIUI is not something I'm interested in using right now. The second, I can't quite figure out if it's a daily driver or not. Also, many of the ROMs seem to be ICS/JB mixes.
The ARC S is not my phone. I have a SIII. I'm trying to compile the necessary info to decide what ROM to flash on the device (which actually belongs to my wife). Not having much time to flash as many ROMs as I do on my SIII, I thought maybe I'd rather ask the people that have actually used and tested available ROMs, rather than flashing one now and having my wife tell me it's no good a few days later and having to do it all over again. So far I have managed to figure out how to unlock bootloader (I hope, because I'll only be doing it tomorrow evening), root the device using flashtool (still not sure if it'll work on stock 4.0.4 but from what I have read so far, I gather it will), and flash a recovery. Am still a bit unclear on all the boot.img flashing that goes on and why it's necessary. Seems to me this has to do with the data partition. Of course I could be wrong.
So again, sorry if I "didn't" use the search button first. I'll try and not have it happen again. Oh, and thanks so much for the help. /end sarcasm
Jeeezzzzz I am so sick and tired of everyone just assuming we don't search before asking questions. Have you ever stopped to consider the reasons behind the questions? No disrespect, dude, I can see you are a senior member and have a really nice post count. I'm sure you have made valuable contributions to this community. But just assuming stuff doesn't really suit you.

Again, I didn't quite understand the point of starting a new thread so myself found it annoying to see you asking what you have, "Not asking "which ROM is best" etc", not directly you might not be but essentially, it is what you're asking, and some of us are sick of seeing such threads posted and this sums up why...

I can't agree more. Which ROM is the fastest? Which kernel is best? etc. etc. It's like walking into a bar and asking which drink is the best. You can't get your answer because every person around has a personal taste and looking for something different.
Going further. Telling that one ROM is better than another is quite disrespectful to developers. Most of them spent much time making their work for FREE and one guy can easily depreciate their work.
If you're looking for answer - try. It's easy and making it on your own is much funnier than looking for spoon feeding in every situations. Thinking is fun

Yes, you are right. I still have another thread going. But I didn't want to muddy the waters. I want to keep it separate. The focus of this thread was to understand if there is a working, for daily use, JB ROM out there. For ICS I am already pretty convinced Ultimate is the way to go as far as what I am looking for. Your reply in the other thread was most appreciated and was actually what I had considered, before I got the "go ahead" from the wife. Again, thanks for the tip. But now the circumstances have changed and flashing a ROM is now an option. For this reason I am just trying to figure out if I should opt for aosp 4.1.2, 4.2.1 or CM 10(.1) based on user experience when it comes to stability and broken features or bugs. I do not need anyone to tell me which ROM is best. I have already been told to avoid "which ROM is best" threads and I intend to do as told. But honest to God that's not what I want here. Just opinions regarding aosp 4.1.2, 4.2.1 or CM 10(.1). In general. Don't need anyone saying X rom is better or whatnot. And I am terribly sorry if this is how it came across. As for trying ROM's, I'm all for it. I have Obsessive Rom Disorder myself and am a total flashaholic. I flash ROMs to my phones like every other day at the latest. But as you pointed out my other thread, you can see that flashing dozens of roms to the ARC is not an option. I am trying to find what is or isn't stable so I can decide on the path to go, and then choose a ROM based on that. Imagine I flash 4.1.2 only to find it FC's a lot using camera app or whatever. Or that wifi is unstable and she really relies on wifi daily for work. Or anything else. I check the ROM threads for known bugs, but many a rom here on XPERIA ARC sub-forums don't list bugs, either because they have non, or because OP's don't post them. I tend to think it's probably the former and not the latter, but since I am quite used to seeing some sort of buglist, I am not sure and so, of course, hesitant.
Please, please don't think I mean to be disrespectful. Or rude. Or just plain annoying. It's just that I really can't afford to get this wrong. I need to get this right first time round (or at least within the first couple of tries) so my wife can continue to work with the phone and not come to me saying "this and that don't work".
I appreciate the community. I have learned a whole lot from you guys. I support devs when I can through donations (small for sure, but I tend to donate what I can afford from time to time). And I answer whenever I think I can help and contribute. It's just I get so annoyed when I see people just assuming I didn't search.
Sorry for the rant.

I understand your need to get it right but you'd had some good responses in the other thread which you could of followed up, and unfortunately it obviously has come across as annoying, but we're a forgiving community. The best thing to do when trying to decide is to read through the last few pages of a ROM thread and see what's being reported, just because a ROM might work right to begin with, unknown conflicts might start to arise when the Phones been used for a prolonged period of time, an update to a certain app breaks something etc, and while for many it may not be an issue because they'll just come and get a fix or wait for an update to something that might not bother them but bothers the next user, I wouldn't go the custom ROM route, but she's your Wife at the end of the day so it's not my balls on the line.

I hear you. And I have succesfuly managed to root the phone. Am now in the process of doing a Titanium Backup of the device and a NANDROID too. I don't really want to flash custom. I'd rather tweak as you suggested, but to be honest, I have no idea where to begin with this device.

Best ROM for Blackstone

What do you think is best ROM for Blackstone ?
What use you ?
I guess that depends very much on what you're looking for. Until you decide what it is you want, nobody is EVER going to give you the right answer.
For me, the best ROM is the one my device came with..it's stable and works. I have never felt the need to flash a new one, esp since just about every ROM I've ever read about has a problem in one way or another (even if it is fixed the next day)
Actually, I have to say that I'm always disappointed by the number of ROMS that come out....it seems that there's new ones almost every day. I appreicate that these are released to allow people to test and report back, but surely they should be restricted to a handful of beta testers perhaps?
ok..back in my box now...apologies

The one that works best for you and best suits your individual needs.
if you dont want this thread closing i suggest you put a list of things you need require want and ask what meets your requirements. you have been warned!!!
Suggestion
Hi
May I respectfully suggest you have a trawl through the Blackstone Rom threads and see what you like and as mentioned above what best suits you. Most of the topics have a change log or features log and screenshots to help you make your mind up.
Then read the Wiki to gather all the info needed to actually start changing to the ROM you find is best for you.

I use Onkolog's and I'm very satisfied. In terms of speed it does not compare with the stock ROM, much faster. Very stable and quite Spartan, the way I like it. Hope this helps a bit more than most of the posts I've seen in this thread.
It depends on what you want.
Do you want a light, fast & probably stable ROM?
Or a heavy ROM with many programs on it?
Or between that?
I use dutty's 2.3 at the moment, but I don't use TF3D.
Take a look at what ROM's you want.
PS: the manila 3 is nice, so pick one with manila 3 and check out your new TF3D Look
In my case, after testing several realeased roms, I am using Dutty's 2.1. It is very satisfactory. I tried versions 2.2 and 2.3 but I don't particularly like the new start menu (I have a lot of programs installed and it doesn't suit my needs).
Try any of the versions (v2.xx) available at dutty's website. Any of them will amaze your relatives and friends.
I'm just surprised no MOD closed this thread!!
This is a common question with no answer as everyone is different so obviously everyones likes & dislikes will be different so no point asking which rom is better as what you may like, the next person won't!
Go into each rom thread, read up on them and flash whichever one appeals most to you. If you aren't happy, flash another!!
I've flashed countless rom's and I'm still searching for the perfect one!!

What, no deleting threads?
I asked a similar question to this about 2 months ago, having just bought a Blackstone, and got a short, sharp message about searching instead of trying to start a conversation and engage people. The thread got deleted a few minutes later.
Glad this didn't happen to you, good luck choosing a ROM. People on this forum are very helpful and talented, but can be incredibly rude at times.

I understand your comment, but if I can defend a few people on this site. Yes, some are rude and they generally get banned due to complaints....and rightly so. But others may have come across as rude but are infact actually good natured people who are just annoyed at getting asked the same questions day in.
As you said you asked the same question a few months ago and I can guarantee this same question has been asked dozens of other times. This is why we always ask people to read threads before posting new ones, and at the top of each forum included in the rules etc it also states this.
I try and be as helpful when I can and answer every query to the best of my knowledge, but I've also lost my cool once or twice.
My previous post in this thread is basically as much as anyone can offer on this subject.
Anyway, thats my two cents on the subject!!

Very well said. a) I too am surprised this didn't get closed. b) I agree, I don't think it's as much as people being rude but it gets annoying when the same questions are asked without using the search button.
and c) each ROM IS different. I've installed about a dozen different ROMs on my Blackstone and each one had their issues and/or benefits.
For the most part, I followed Dutty's ROMs but 2-3 weeks ago, I tried David's ROMs and though they're both great, I actually found an older ROM from David that I extremely liked when I disabled 3FTD. My phone is stable, extremely fast and has what I need in it.
It's very easy to get caught up "upgrading" ALL THE TIME. It seems that we all want the best and fastest ROM out there. Unfortunately, there isn't a perfect ROM out there that doesn't have some small issue and even if you found one with a minimal amount, you probably wouldn't like the amount (or lack of) programs in it.
I suggest you try several ROM's until you find a "style" that you like. After 3 years of upgrading ROM's (started back with a Razr) I can finally say I'm happy with the my current ROM and have no desire to upgrade.
So, start modding and good luck.

Sound advice by Mark. I personally have tried most roms available as well - currently using Dutty 2.4 quite happy with it, I found the new Dutty version release slighty slower then the 2.4.

Hello, the legal official rom . All cooked roms are full of bugs ...

[Q] What ROM To Use?

I am ready to dive in with the Unrevoked3 method to root my Desire, I take it I will then be able to load a custom ROM, however I'm a little overwhelmed by the choices. Is there a comprehensive list somewhere or can someone make any suggestions? I'm after stability and reliability although I am interested in what the whole ROM scene has to offer.
I presume that all my paid apps will still work as well?
i would stick to the rom you are using because if you have to ask that question, you haven't done enough research, if there was a single answer to what rom to use, then there wouldn't be so many around
so the final answer is, stick to the stock froyo that you've got already, there's nothing to be gained from other roms considering you didn't specify what it is you were looking for
Moved to Q&A as not development

- Yes, you should be able to flash a custom rom, if you can follow the instructions.
- There is no comprehensive list, the number of rom's and the changes are to large to keep it up to date, or do you offer to create one
- suggestions will tell you to use rom a, b, s, or z, depending on the users preferences. The only thing you can do is to read the rom description, and start skimming and following the rom's which description you liked.
A thing you left out, and what is normally mentioned in a question like this, do you prefer sense or non-sense?
To finish: I use LeeDroiD V2.1 and I am happy with it, it's stable / reliable, and it's Sense based.
Now just wait for the OD, DeFrost, Pays, Cyanogen (just some examples) and other rom users to give there opinion,
and then decide
^^ pretty much what he said!!
No one can tell you what to use, only give their opinions. Ultimately you'll have to read the threads and just try the ROMs until you find one you're happy with. I've gone back to stock as it does what I need it to
i just love when dudes get all condescending as if they were never overwhelmed when they first started out. first they yell at you and infer that you're an idiot and then 4 posts later, they wind up actually helping.
i guess it's like hazing for nerds.
seriously though, i'm gonna answer all your questions right here and now:
go with CM6. then download another one and try it. then download another one and try it. and then... come back here and tell us what your opinion is. you know, pay it forward and don't become one of those condescending dorks after you have figured it all out.
that is all. i'm going bowling with your father...

Well, when you don't get out much and you don't have many friends.. We should be more sympathetic to 'special needs' people.
Anyway, I'm on AuraxTsense now (check my sig for full details). I like the concept of undervolting for extended battery life, however before I dive in to ROMs, what can cause damage? I will avoid overclocking ROMs for that reason, anything else to watch out for?
What's the advantage of Cyanogen over others? I also read that Modaco ROMs are designed with stability in mind.
Is there any way to back up settings to restore when switching ROMs? Or should I just back each one up with all my settings and use that?
In the last week or so I've tried at least
- Cyanogen
- PirateRUM
- Some PAYS Sense one
- OpenDesire
- ShadowSense
+ another 1 or 2 I forget now
with Alex-V's one still to try.
The main thing I'd say is:
- Do you want Sense?
- Do you want GApps and other fluff preinstalled?
Try them and see...
Personally
- I like OD but it needs the Sense music player
- CM has no market, and I have not worked out how cutdown it's GApps package yet to remove fluff
I have been using cyanogenmod 6 for a few days now.
And im not going anywere anytime soon
However, like they say, try em all
Aurax is rocking my boat right now although struggling to work out how to install Maps..
What do you like about Cyanogen?
The ui is good. It just works. Try out for yourself. Painless to install. Ohh and the battery performance is alot better then the stock rom

Wow you just dug up a 2yr old thread!!

Dude... reply to the newer threads. At least november 2012.

Mods, I request an enforced ROM thread template

I am getting annoyed of many ROM threads here, because they are
stating "speed improvements, minor fixes, stable" - if you cant name it exactly, i call bull****.
ROMs being based on the same RUU as other ROMs but not stating what is different. please stop wasting my time. i dont want to go sherlock holmes on your ROM. when you just spend 2h, to make a ROM that is basically the same like most other (just differeing in the point above) - thats fine, you can play around and share it here - but PLEASE tell us.
incomplete list of what is working or not. listing only BT as not working and then reading on the third page "animations and browser download dont work" and then a reply "they dont work on any sense 4.0 ROM". Or stuff like "bugs: you tell me". could you please take 10minutes to test against a checklist?!
so whats my point:
I am no ROM developer, but a software developer. And I see all the wonderfull work done here. But i hate the lazy "you all probably know what im talking about" attitude around here. I feel a bit scammed by either the very shiny threads with custom logos and artwork, listing as many points as they can - whats the purpose - you dont sell anything here. Or on the other hand the very short threads that omit the most important points, making the ROMs incompareable - are you hiding something?
so i propose:
an enforced thread layout, that is composed by the community.
some points i would like to see in it:
name
version
based on (RUU revision number, link)
android revision(, sense revision)
type (a coarse classification: stock, themed, bloatfree, desensed, ported, testrelease, AOSP. multiple selection possible)
changes to base (the 5 main topics of this ROM. at least kernel, bootscreen, keyboard, launcher, theme)
dependencies: firmware etc.
screenshot (i know mostly there is no difference, but i personally am a visual type and need them )
a bug checklist (also community build, most usual bugs, states: ok, minor, broken, untested)
a tweaks checklist (e.g. rooted, deodexed, zipaligned, crt, recent apps, APM, battery, /etc/hosts, beats etc.)
APK versions (also a community build checklist, maybe a script for that)
changelog (for each old version a download, for each change a source link, not just "thanks xyuser" - having the ROM in github etc. would be awesome)
I bet there are some more points - i think the non-developers should unite and demand a bit of quality. Develop and enforce a standard. Use this thread to gather ideas.
And inb4 "be gratefull and take what you get" - no, I think chefs have a responsibility to be transparent, they get lots of testers and glory in return. XDA is a central reference for everyone who roots his device. Mods have taken some good steps to clean up the mess. Now its time for the next.
I think the more detailed the information gets, the faster the development will become and users can build trust in what they flash.
Mods, would something like this be possible?
Yes, it will make everything easier for the users too compare one with another.

I also agree, There are way to many roms out there, I couldnt possibly flash them all and test them, My phone would be outdated by the time i managed that.
The majority are exactly the same, except with the occasional different theme /tweak /app but other than that i think they are similar...
I also get the feeling that the ROMs are a pretty much copy & paste job (with the exception of the devs that build from scratch)
I would like to see some sort of organization in the development thread.. I have nothing against these ROM Makers, But if the first post pointed out what exactly makes THIS ROM different than any others. i think it would be less confusing to people..
I am so for this. I am tired myself of all the crap too. I would like to know what I'm getting and how stable it truly is. I mean saying it's stable but then u find our in post number 400, that one the newest release there are some bugs which don't make it go for every day use. And if it's kanged, tell us, some do tell us but then same get someone else and make it theirs with some changes but nobody finds out till later. I'm also tired of ppl causing problems for others, whenever they follow rules more than others, and tell them this is such & suches place u better leave. I that's y some really good ppl leave here and sometimes the mods allow it cause they're friends. It's total bs, but this is just how I feel!
+ 1 ^^^
I get belittled sometimes in them threads, Im just trying to ask a simple question and the replies are 'dude.. this was asked ten times already.. look at post 862816745 and you will see....' The damn threads change so fast i cant keep up.. Im not a noob... maybe a novice to the sensation but i know what im doing in general.
People expect everyone to know how to do things - because they have done it themselves so many times... Id rather help someone with the simplest question than shout at them for not asking for help and bricking their phone...
C'mon guys, play nice
Rant over lol

Maybe there should be a forum for 'Original Development' for projects that aren't a variation of another project. I've seen this for other devices' forums.

Looks like I was never enjoyed my phone even just for 1 day. Today I've installed a ROM, adding many apps from Market which took many hours to setup & configure.
While I've become comfortable with the ROM, something freaked Me ouy: "Oh, there is even better and way more stable ROM available than this current ROM." Downloading, it takes about 1 to 2 hours. Then booted the ROM, but I caught myself disappointed with the news, "This new one has just another clone of the first ROM I've ever tried." Oh no, it has different theme and feels! "All of them are on the same base, same kernel, same etc, etc, etc."
Then, my final decision should be restoring the first ROM through Recovery, but again it takes minutes to complete.
And yet, I fooled with Battery Calibration placebo/myth which actually doesn't exist. Do I need to recalibrate my battery on s ROM changes? No, Google Official has just stated it's just a myth and placebo.
This is what I feel, sorry I mean no offense to any Devs.

The damn threads change so fast i cant keep up.. Im not a noob... maybe a novice to the sensation but i know what im doing in general.
People expect everyone to know how to do things - because they have done it themselves so many times... Id rather help someone with the simplest question than shout at them for not asking for help and bricking their phone...

Dude I am so with u. Some threads r just so damn long that to every little post would take to long and I would probably never be able to flash a rom. As far as noobs go, we were all noobs at one point. I get most to get me on gtalk so I can help them without some as telling them off. Yeah sometimes it takes me some time but hell I've been able to save quite a few phones.
Its a much better feeling knowing you have helped someone and saved a phone from the horrible stock ROM or possible brick..
Ive done my fair share of helping noobs to help other noobs... Ive also saved a few phones from the trash too
XDA is a community - not a place to rant at people for being a noob - Although there are some hopeless people out there who do not follow the rules, But the majority of us just need some guidance..
The worlds best android developer wasnt born the best... he / she was obviously a noob who learnt from someone else...
The way i see it is that noobs are the future of development so dont hate us
I so agree and am getting ready to learn the cooking game from a friend and great deveolper. He's also getting ready to aquire a sensation and is going to port some of his awesome work from the 3d to the sensation, but make it with ics. Don't know if it'll every see xda because of the drama but it'll be on our teams site. It might make since he does have stuff in evo on xda but I don't know yet.
I'll probably get flamed for this, but that's xda.
The devs don't do this for our convenience. As users who don't pay them a salary, I don't think we're in a position to tell them how they should share what they do. They use their spare time to make something and then choose to share with the masses, which they really didn't have to do. How they choose to present their work should really be up to them IMO.
Besides, if you stick around long enough and read the threads now and then, you'll be able to tell which devs are doing real work versus someone who just forks another person's ROM and throws in some personal tweaks.
Yes most of the ROMs are similar in looks or function, but that's too be expected since everything comes from whatever HTC releases. Each one has its own flavor since each dev has different priorities. Want something totally different? Try one of the WIP AOSP/CM9 builds or maybe MiUI v4.

I think the real question is, WHY are the devs doing it at all? There are motives. I think this thread is basically asking them to spare us. If they decide to pack their ball up and go somewhere else, no big deal. The REAL devs will always stick around.
This thread isn't directed at our "patron devs" but all the no names that pop up with these ridiculous, and misleading, clones while asking for donations.
All in all, no one is forcing us to flash their ROM. It would be nice to have several layers to the dev forum. We need a place to easily see what the pro devs are up to without all the mess in the way. Or, how some genuine developing is coming along...
Matt
I can see it from both sides, All the devs good or bad are still great in their own way.
But some tidying up in the development section wouldnt do any harm... Its like a jumble sale in there, Rummaging around to see whats what. Its ridiculous
Thread cleaned.
Now, you watch your attitude and language or simply face the consequences...
yaddamean, I understand what you mean but I would say the opposite: devs that dont care to be transparent, can host their ROMs on their servers elsewhere. I know this is a quite fundamental difference in views. But i dont get what should be the advantage of being the silent majority.
Good things never come easily.
I bet we would not loose one good dev.
Moved to the about Xda-developers forum as such discussions are not device specific but rather site specific
I agree with u and because of yaddamean and others like him who like to just jump in and flamming ppl. As soon as someone stands up to those kinda ppl, the real supporters of this Site and it's Real dev, get in trouble. That's y ppl leave here too!

[Q] Upgrading from 2.2.1 to Jelly Bean… ROM recommendations?

Decided not to upgrade officially to any newer version… so that I could easily root onto a custom ROM.
That was a year ago now—
Exploits available for my ROM (from running 'X-Ray'):
ZergRush
Gingerbreak
Backup program planning to use (once ROOTed):
- Titanium backup? [feel free to recommend alternates]
Planning to use one of these ROMs (feel free to suggest others):
[ROM][3-2-13]UNOFFICIAL MIUI V4.1 3.2.1 for HTC Desire Z [JB4.1]
[ROM][Feb/01/2013] AOSP - Jelly Bean 4.2.1 - Build 09
Can you recommend a good—i.e.: fast and stable—mod ROM for my Desire Z?
Thanks for all suggestions,
Alec Taylor
BTW: How do you think the speed compares between a mod Jelly Bean mod and stock Froyo?
PS: I still want to be able to use Google Apps, such as GMail, Market &etc.
huh, first of all best roms and recommend me a rom questions arent really to be asked, your best to search a bit and then try a few out to see whats best.
while your at it search out the xda wiki to see how to root your phone, the ways you mentions probably wont work and if they do there are far better ways now
comparing across versions of andorid is hard to do, especially 2.2 to 4.1, things start becoming to relative to answer. but yes you can always use google apps in android roms, gmail and market (playstore) have been around since android 1.0 and i doubt they will get dumped
Can you recommend better ways of ROOTing the phone?
Also, what difference in battery-life should I expect; moving from stock Froyo to modded Jelly Bean?

Why do people answer with this stupid answer?
He asking people to post their (good and fast) ROMs so he can see what most people use and works for them.
By your logic, the best ones are the ones whos thread is the smallest because it has no bugs. Or is it the biggest because there is always active development? Who knows?
Just recommend him a ROM.
Anyways, personally I was using Andromadus Mimicry v1.5.0 (ICS) Pretty nice update from latest stable CM. CM is still a BIT more stable but AM and its ICS are great.
Just got my phone back from repair and Ill problably try out a 4.2 ROM as Ive been DYING to run it. If not Ill problalby go back to AM.
Or you could go the demkantor way and flash and format and flash and format and flash and format and flash and.....well you get the point and be bored all day configuring different ROMs over and over again....
Also battery life tends to be better than ANY stock ROM
seriously.... other than being against xda rules SEE HERE it is a pointless question that clutters thread all over xda.
i also like the conclusion youve made about what my logic is, and if you really think about it i never even came close to implying that rather the opposite as i suggestion to do some homework first.... a little reading goes along way.
also i did attempt to answer the questions as best as i could without holding his hand through the process of rooting and choosing a rom, being pointed in a direction to do some research is far better than saying yeah root the lazy way and install mimicry, dont learn how to use your phone and when things dont seem right start another thread on a simple subject that has been covered dozens of times in the past month, dont search, the search button is for losers.
and again why answer with what rom to use? maybe this user is in need of the best camera possible or the absolute most cutting age rom, neither is mimicry, although its a great rom it might be terrible for this guy.
asking the best rom can be akin to asking whats the best music, and then what artist, then what cd to get, then what track to listen to. and no thats not going too far as that is exactly what happens on xda every day.... "
how should i root, now what rom to flash, now what mods should i use, is this the kernel for me, any good apps i should get, how about a radio i hear i should change that should i?"
so yeah sorry for rambling on here and wasting more electronic ink but please try not to take me out of context, i try to be a very helpful person here and give back as much as ive been given from xda but its the simple things that people dont learn or at least refuse to that bugs me
*end rant

Not actually against XDA rules, its just viewed fouled on this section. And BTW, I made a thread like that (and Im going to as soon as I charge my Desire Z) and I did not get any warning for it, so it is hardly enforced.
You actually answered your own question with "why answer what ROM to use?" If the OP wanted a iPhone like expirence, people would problably recommend him MIUI ROM. If the OP wanted a better ROM based on what his HTC stock one is, people would recommend him a Sense ROM.
Now, what I DO NOT approve of is a thread like:
Title: What ROM do I get?
Message:
Hello
What ROM do I put on my phone?
Thanks
No. That, I do NOT agree with as it shows the user has had no thought and/or hasnt even tried.
And of course asking the best music is vague. But asking the best artist BECAUSE I LISTEN TO THIS TYPE OF MUSIC is NOT vague. So very bad example.
Also, remember that XDA has over the years gone from very talented and technical developers to hobbiests to complete n00bs that want to do this and get it over with. Not that that is a good thing....
In every forum there is post from the moderators saying not and it because of your very last line, they're trying not to allow this form to turn into a wasteland of the same pointless thread over and over, trying to get people to search a bit and get answers on their own. If you feel that's not a good thing then why promote it?
And yes the genre is android and the artist is the vision, so we already don't need to answer that. And then it comes down to the album and the track to listen to... but why keep explaining my metaphor, you obviously disagree so whatever.
either way it is a waste and the less crap that's all over these threads the easier it is for the new people to sift through making the question less necessary to even ask.
But go ahead and keep asking and answering them for obviously its better to turn this forum into clutter, I am the one in the wrong here and should keep my mouth shut

Given measurable metrics which mod ROM and ROOTing method would you recommend?

Non sequitur.
You are comparing subjective things such as music with objective things such as metrics.
I asked a very specific question—with a single follow-up—asking a very well defined question.
To reiterate:
Given measurable metrics—battery_life>=current_ROM, stability>=current_ROM, upgrade_version==Jelly Bean, phone_model=Desire Z, current_ROM==2.2.1—which mod ROM and ROOTing method would you recommend?
Thanks for all suggestions
....best rom is subjective....very subjective....done squabaling on that
Best rooting method is any using gfree to exploit which involves downgrading first, search out the xda wiki or the cyanogen wiki or strawmetals pdf guide, all have been covered many times in this thread and if your search button isn't working use google. Pick a guide, read, understand, follow every step, if you get stuck, read some more, if still confused ask
You will have vastly different experiences across different android platforms, niether you or I will know what os to run for you until you try a bunch, battery life is determined more by how you use your phone and how good your battery is rather than what rom you have. Search and you will easily find many thread giving tips on improvements
Happy flashing

So you want Jelly Bean, and for crying out loud it's not like there's a billion different JB ROMs to choose from... If this was the nexus 4 forum, maybe this question would be slightly less pointless.
So atm in terms of JB we've got 4.1 and 4.2 . Step 1 - do you have to have the latest? If yes, easy peasy, go for Andromadus CM10.1 for features or Andromadus AOSP 4.2 or Fyodor's 4.2 for speed, then pick Fyodor's if you needs the latest kernel stuff.
You don't mind not having the latest? Go for 4.1, get Jelly Belly for stability, MIUI for... MIUI stuff, if you want that, Andromadus CM10 for features or Andromadus AOSP 4.1 for speed. Don't go for Fyodor's, he stopped 4.1 at build 4 or 5. Also don't go for my PA port, atm it's ****.
For rooting... What demkantor said.
Wow, that logic was hard. I'm gonna go get a cuppa whilst my brain recharges.

[Q] Best AOSP rom (most stable and everything working)? What about stock based?

Hi guys,
Just wondering if there's a general consensus on the most stable AOSP rom? Preferably one that doesn't have anything (major) broken - e.g I can live without voice search, I must have a fully working camera, etc. Also built to be stable as a rock. Are the AOSP roms vulnerable to the SDS?
Or are they not quite there yet?
For those of you not on AOSP, what stock-based roms do you like? I don't really understand the difference between stock and things like ARHD for example? How stable is it compared to stock, and what about battery life? My 4.1.1 battery was incredible but 4.1.2 isn't so good.
Cheers!
Hi guys,
Just wondering if there's a general consensus on the most stable "What's the best ROM" thread? Preferably one that doesn't have anything (major) broken - e.g I can live without newbies opinions, I must have a fully detailed answers, etc. Also built to be the most stable as a rock thread, one that even the mods won't delete for being the 500th repeat thread. Are the AOSP roms threads vulnerable to the SDS (Sudden Deletion Syndrome)?
Or are the threads not quite there yet? Do we need another one?
For those of you not on XDA regularly, what stock-based roms threads do you like? I don't really understand the difference between searching and posting yet another thread for example? How silly is it compared to other threads, and what about sarcasm life, how quickly will my threads be mocked? My first thread was incredible but this "What's the best ROM" isn't so good.
Cheers!
Android Revolution HD (14.0 for the Galaxy Note 2) is probably the closest you're going to come to what you want. It's based on the stock ROM, but lordy! is it fast. And rock solid. Has a built-in installer that allows you to remove (or not) the Samsung cruft. Been using it since version 9, and I am quite happy with it. Check the thread in the developer forum.

Hilarious! No seriously, thanks for taking the time to satirise the thread without taking note of some of the questions I'd asked.
I've searched long and hard about SDS and not getting anything at all concrete about the implications of using AOSP. We don't all have the £500 to throw around and just risk bricking our device because somebody is to pretentious to actually help out someone that has taken the time to look but still needs some guidance.

Hi mate, thanks for the response. ARHD was great on my desire HD when I used it almost 2 years ago on that, and it looks to be the best stock rom for my needs - I appreciate the first hand review though! Still trying to get my head around aosp roms, many of which without buglists and uncertainties regarding SDS :/

SDS Thread
What - is - the - best - ROM
The sad truth of SDS is that no one really knows (sure, there's a LOT of speculation) anything about it. I know 3 people with S3's who have had their phone die after they upgraded to the latest Sammy Official "patched for SDS" ROM. It's sadly a gamble we all take.
Anyway, if you're really done some research then I apologise. You didn't mention that at all in your original post, it looked like another "I'm too lazy to research this, bring it to me on a platter" thread.

Whilst the title is generic the inside of the thread was a bit more particular - with the SDS focus - and so given that nothing was out there I'm not really sure of the point of putting "honestly I've searched please don't kill me" because this is my 3rd device I've played with and used xda for and I know how petty a lot of forum members can be, it simply wouldn't make a difference.
The SDS thread is naturally where I started but has extremely limited info for aosp rom. The what is the best rom threads you posted are largely redundant given the lack of information or type of experience they're looking for is provided. Most are a waste of everyone's time and given how quickly development rakes place even if they were relevant they could still quickly be outdated.
Your tone in your first reply suggested that the answers were blindingly obvious and even a moron like me could find them with the most primitive of searches. Instead you've just admitted that no one really knows and it therefore was a valid question - a bit more thought before posting could go a long way.

The point of telling people you've done some research is so that they don't assume you're lazy. Sadly, most people ARE lazy. SDS focus? You mention it once, in passing.

I'm requesting your participation so that there is enough data to objectively answer the question "popular" and "best" as there is a scoring feature that allows ROMs to be ranked.
