[Q] Micro SDHBC card making phone slow? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I found my old 8GB MicroSDHC card (I think it's class 6), and popped it into my phone after formatting since it wasn't being used.
I notice that the phone now wakes much slower when I hit the power button and the battery is draining faster.
Is this normal? What new processes start running when you use an external memory card? Did I not do something that I should have done when I put the new SD card in?

When you use an external card, on startup it runs a scan of it in addition to the internal one. Assuming you don't have much on there, though, it shouldn't take long.
Personally I've never run mine without an external card, so I can't say if any other aspect of startup is slower.

I don't mean the scanning when you first boot it up, I know that's normal. I'm talking about after that, as in, when the screen turns off and you push the power button to turn it back on. I'm noticing that it takes a few seconds for the screen to turn on now as opposed to near instantly before I had the SD card.

I noticed that too but just got use to it. The only place where its still annoying to me is when I go to hang up a call and it takes a few seconds to come up with the "end" button. Other than that it's not a big deal.

Ah, I can't get used to waiting a few seconds for the screen to turn on. It feels like I'm using a dumb phone. I don't need the extra storage space so I'd rather not use the SD card than wait longer to do simple things.
Thanks for the help.

I've had three different SD cards in my E4GT and never experienced this issue.

I confirmed that the issue exists with mines. I tested the time it takes for the screen to wake after pressing the power button with both the SD and without and found that the phone always took round 2-4 seconds longer to wake with the SD card in.
Perhaps there are other causes to this issue in conjunction with the SD card?
My setup is as follows:
ROM: Calk 2.6
Kernel: Stock EL13
Modem: EL13
Theme: Overstew's ICS theme

HTC Desire won't shut down / power off

Turned off the phone last night, returned to it this morning (6+ hours) with "Power off - shutting down" on the screen. I ended up pulling the battery and booting from cold.
The phone turned back on with no problems, but 45 minutes after turning it off again - it is displaying the same screen and not shutting down. Pulling the battery, turning on and then turning off the phone immediately has the same problem.
Tasks running before the shut down are normal, I have almost no 3rd party apps installed yet.
Ideas anyone?
Sounds like a similar problem that I and a number of others seem to be having. The bad news is that there doesn't seem to be a simple fix at the moment, but the good news is that with it happening to increasing numbers of us, hopefully it will be remediable in a future update.

Hi there,
What main post are you referring to for this issue?
If you could please direct me, thanks.
I'm having the same problem, last week I was turning the phone off and it would turn off in half hour or so.
This morning, I turned the phone off, and it has been "Shutting down" for about 3 hours now...
extremely frustrating!!!
Try to install "aLogCat" application. This app could show Android log files.
And see if you can spot something there ...
I also have this issue. I took out the battery.
The thing is ... after turned on ... you can turn off without any problem.
unmount sd card before shutting down.
Will change it from never to shutting down to shutting down in <10 seconds

Had the same issue when I first got my desire from T-Mobile. SD Card later failed on me, and after getting a replacement from T-Mobile, the phone works perfectly and shuts down instantly. So my guess is that your problem is the SD card. You could try walking to the retailer and try to get a replacement SD card. When mine failed T-Mobile even gave me a 8gb one instead of the orignal 4gb
Im 99% sure its an app/widget causing the prob. I had the same, but its gone when I uninstalled most of my apps. Not sure which app caused the prob though...
I had that problem. After a hard reset it is not present any more. So i guess that some app caused it. Couldnt tell wich one.

It might be harder to diagnose than uninstalling/killing something and trying again, as it might be due to memory leaks, services, other tasks. I've read that it might be related to the backup to sd card which happens from time to time, so unless you're in the middle of a backup then you'd not have a problem (assuming there is a connection). You can only tell over time.
HTC Desire won't power off
I had the exact same problem. I only had 2 widgets active: 1 was the Handcent SMS widget the other was a Battery widget from mippin.com. I changed the Handcent widget to the program shortcut but did not uninstall and uninstalled the Battery widget. Now it powers off with no problem
i have the same issue with my desire.. i have a 8gb sd card in there.. which is nearly full.. maybe thats an issue?

thanks for that.. is there any downside to doing a hard reset? is that setting - privacy - factory data reset?

Once I tried to unmount sd card and then it wasn't possible at all to shut down the phone. I had to remove battery
hey buddy, try to remove quick links like back light and soft reset, it works also try with flash light same...worked with me..good luck. or try toms power off zip.
DESIRE doesnt turn off
It sucks..all night long, this morning i found out it was still in the process of shutting down..turning off the cell phone should be a priority program, all others tasks must shut down..i think HTC should make an update since a lot of users experience same problem.
It used to hang at shutting down with me too. But, and I have no idea what changed, it now shuts down just fine. Weird stuff!
I shut mine down last night. It used to take about 60seconds to shut down but last night it just said "shutting down" for hours. I left it to see what happened. 11hours later it still said "shutting down". I picked it up and was going to open it up and remove battery. I obviously didn't want to do that to get dust and crap into the back of phone. As soon as I turned it over to remove back the screen went white! HTC. And it started up. ? ? ? coincidence or did me moving it around cause the restart after 11hours?
Anyway, I can tell it now has 237mb free (using advanced task killer to check memory available). It never normally has more than 150mb free. Maybe there is a memory leak somewhere in Sense UI? It seems the longer you have used thephone without a restart, the more likley it will hang during shutdown.
I hope HTC are aware of this issue. I logged a support call too, as I'm sure many of you did.
anyway, shake the phone around a bit before you remove the back to see if that helps. It did for me after 11 hours of being stuck on "shutting down!" screen.
Oh by the way, I had unmounted the card befre the shut down in the hopes it would be quicker than 60seconds. It made no difference!
i had this issue also.. a factory reset fixed it.. i think it was an app i installed did the damage.. some mentioned unmounting the sd card first but i tried that and it made no difference..

phone wont wake from sleep

Iv'e had my desire for all of about 3 days. Absolutely love the phone; however, I've been having a few problems. The phone doesn't seem to wake up when I receive a text message, and as of about an hour ago, the phone doesn't wake up *AT ALL* when it goes to sleep. I have to pull out the battery and turn the phone back on, but then as soon as it goes back to sleep, or if I touch the power button to manually put it to sleep, it wont wake up.
Has anyone else had this problem? I've tried a hard reset and the problem remains.
wow first saw this post and thought i had clicked on the htc touch hd android section, but does your phone always turn off when you press the top button?
Tried a master reset? What rom you running? If it's first t-mobile one try an update or even try Generic rom.
I've got the similar problem. On vibration profile, when a text message arrives the phone vibrates but the screen doesn't wake up. It wakes up when I receive a call though.
Is this by design? Does your screen wake up when you receive a text message?
No wake on notifications for me ... is Android meant to?
I solved this and posted a reply, but it seems to have disappeared.
The problem I was having was because of a corrupt SD card. I was using an 8GB card that I'd been using in my Touch HD for the last 2 years and running things like XDAndroid from it.
The problem disappeared when I replaced the sd card with a new one.

I don't het it, is the system meant to wake on notifications?
I also had the same problem of not being able to unlock the phone once when I was copying a large movie file to the phone, but automatically worked after it was done.
So it seems to be related to the micro SD card in some way.

no, it could if you want it to,he's talking about his phone not waking up after he puts it to sleep or turns off the screen... sms aren't supposd to wake up ur phone and I'm thankful for that, it was handy back in the day when I had the wing but ur screen waking up for no reason that's stupid I mean even if u have ur phone inside ur pocket... doesn't make sense to me as long as the led flashes I'm fine

Desire wont shut down

Hi, hope someone can help...
My Desire wont shut down - it goes to the shutting down screen then when I wake up the next morning, I unlock the phone and it's still on this screen. I know someone else had this issue but can't find the thread on here...
If anyone can help or bump the other thread that'd be great
thanks
I had a similar problem shutting down recently. It took about 10 minutes for the device to finally shut down.
Anyway, I tried reseating the battery and all is fine now...
See if that works for you!
reseating - does that mean take it out and put it back in again?

Yes.
In fact, I remember I was so angry waiting for it to shut down, that I just pulled the battery while it was shutting down. Then I put it back in. Didn't have problems since...
hmmm - tried that and it seemed to work - but 5 mins later tried to shut down and it's still stuck on the shutdown screen.... any ideas?
cheers
Suggest you try a hard reset. If you still have problems, then consider claiming your warranty...
I went from it working perfectly to then taking ages to shut down and now it just plain refuses to shut down. This happens even after I've done a hard reset. My thinking has now changed from 'rogue app' to 'dodgy micro SD card because the problems only happened after I swopped my 4gb supplied card for an 8gb Class 4 PNY card from Play.
Other than that I'm head scratching
I had this problem, i found that killing all open apps with Advanced Task Killer before turning off solved it
Something you could try is unmounting the SD Card (apps->settings->SD & phone storage->unmount SD card) before shutting the phone down. That fixed the problem for me from not shutting down after 10 minutes to a nearly instant shutdown.

[Q] Waiting for the screen to illuminate after ending a call. Fix?

Rooted, clockwork mod recovery.
After I finish a call and pull the phone away from my face, the screen takes a bit to come back on so that I can end the call.
Is there a way to fix this? I'm gonna try a certain build.prop edit and I'll post back if it works.
Also, whats up with the display taking its sweet time to come on after pressing the power button to wake up the phone? Is there a fix for this? Thanks.

Pull our your SD card and the screen will come back fast.
There is something wrong with the SD card, same thing when you try to wake up the phone with the power button, takes a second to turn on.

So there isn't any other way around this? I tired it without the card and it does work.

Phone won't boot - think it's the power button - HELP!

I'm not 100% sure it is the power button so I wanted to run the situation by the forum, but also because this was my son's first Christmas and I have all his videos/pictures on the internal memory ... my priority is really trying to get those. I could really care less if I had to buy a new phone.
So here's the situation ....
Phone was fully charged and I came into work. Had already been listening to a podcast, sent a few text message, etc. I looked over at one point and the screen wouldn't come on. Tried pressing the power button multiple times with no luck. If I removed the battery and put it back in, it would power on briefly and then shut off.
Device only briefly comes on when I first put the battery in. If I'm quick I can try putting the phone in download mode. It gets to the initial screen and then powers off. Sometimes it is there a few seconds longer than others.
I mistakenly tried this and didn't even have the power button in and it still went to the download mode, so THAT is why I'm thinking something is wrong with the power button. It's as though it is permanently pressed.
I read a few threads and watched a few youtube videos but I'm not really getting a clear answer. I've taken the phone apart and the button is NOT pushed in. I can press it and it seems fine (besides it not doing anything). I did try also hitting it a few times as some videos suggested and it didn't help?
Anyone have any thoughts on a next step?
Edit: in case this is important, it is rooted, running moar v6.x, zerolemon battery. i realize the case may have been the initial culprit so at the moment it is back to a stock battery and case.

If it's the power button take it to sprint and and they should fix or replace...especially seeing as its a known issue.

maybe this will help you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2369125. i had a verizon s3 which wouldn't even turn on until i tried this (steps were a little different since it was a verizon one and not sprint). here are the verizon steps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2581166.
you may be able to use the win32diskimager in windows to create the sd card instead of linux. i have also heard the SD card needs to be the same size as the phone. 16GB phones means 16GB Class 10 SD Card. 32GB phone means 32GB Class 10 SD Card. I used a SanDisk card from best buy. probably the best $15 i ever spent lol. i used the sd card to boot the phone. then reinstalled stock recovery and bootloader. thsi didn't affect the actual ROM (didn't take away root on 4.3 jellybean). Good luck!
Try a dirty flash. Can you get into recovery? Flash moar again. Or try nandroid and to external SD and transfer to computer to see if u can collect the files you're trying to get back
