[Q] 4G WiMax Frequencies (Possible Coverage/Signal Enhancement/Expansion) - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

This goes all the way back to my days with my EVO 4G.
I remember over a year ago someone on XDA mentioning that Clearwire's/Sprint's WiMax operates on frequencies other than 2.5 - 2.6Ghz, which are the frequencies our phones' radios are set to.
This person mentioned in some areas there were WiMax towers running anywhere between 2.2 - 2.7Ghz and if we could change the WiMax center frequencies on the EVO's radio, we could take advantage of possibly better coverage, better signal, better speeds, etc.
Unfortunately, on the EVO there didn't seem to be a way to change the center frequencies for the WiMax radio BUT it appears that on our phone (E4GT) there's a very easy way to change the WiMax radio's center frequencies! I stumbled upon it while looking at my WiMax settings.
Here's how you get to the WiMax frequency settings:
For those who don't know how to reach their 4G/WiMax settings, here's how you do this: (no, you don't need to be rooted)
1. Go to your phone's dialpad
2. Enter ##3282#
3. Tap on "View"
4. Tap on "WiMax"
5. Enter your MSL code (here's how to get your MSL without calling Sprint for it)
6. Tap the second menu item, "MRU"
7. Press and hold on either of the two settings until the option comes up to delete or edit them
What it looks like:

I'm a 4G area (Miami) but I have to go outdoors to get signal as it doesn't seem to penetrate the walls of my place. If we can safely expand our center frequencies to improve our coverage and speed, that would be game-changer for people who might be on the outskirts of 4G WiMax coverage or in an unofficial 4G WiMax area.
I'm obviously a little hesitant to change the frequencies without knowing exactly what frequencies it'd be safe for me to change it to but I'm willing to try with a little guidance. Onto my question: Does anyone here have experience with WiMax frequencies and/or Clearwire's exact WiMax frequency range and is willing to give me a nudge in the right direction?

I was already in the cdma editting screen at sprints mru setting when I came across this post. I, too, am testing out the wimax and other cdma settings, but for different reasons.
Nevertheless, I will change the frequencies for you and tell you my results. Check back later to see them.

Wireless spectrum is highly regulated. Sprint (clearwire technically) currently owns licenses to use the 2.5GHz band for WIMAX. The max allowed range would be 2.5GHz to 2.69GHz. Sprint will not be broadcasting WIMAX on any other frequency as it would be a federal offense (FCC regulates all spectrum). So by changing your phone's frequencies, you will not get better WIMAX. Here is a list of all allocated Spectrum uses (can't link it yet, so add h t t p : / / (no spaces):
reboot.fcc.gov/spectrumdashboard/searchSpectrum.seam?conversationId=46379
So, changing the phone's frequency would cause it to get interference from devices such as cordless phones (2.4GHz), amateur radios, local television stations, etc. Your phone will not know how to use those and will cause weird things to happen. Not to mention changing this type of setting may cause damage to your phone.

how can i get into MRU setting,
i have done what you write,
##3282#
will show VIEW MODE or EDIT MODE
i choose EDIT MODE, and put my MSL,
and after that i can't find MRU setting, it's just DATA PROFILE, EVDO, ADVANVCE, WIMAX, USB CHARGING,
where can i find MRU settinh ?
in my country, wimax freq is 2362500, 2367500, 2372500

I'm curious about this as well. The Clearwire map shows that my area is completely covered, yet I'm hardly ever able to connect to 4g even when outside.

2g,3g widget/switch??

Anyone know of any widget that will quickly switch between 2g and 3g networks?
Most of the time I leave it on 2g to save battery but when i need to use the internet to browse or search I have to go into the settings and switch it to 3g to surf the net then when i've finished switch back to 2g to save the battery again.
would be much more simple if there was a widget like the bluetooth, gps, wifi one that could quickly and easily be toggled.
There's a few on the marketplace - take a look at this one:
http://curvefish.com/widgets/2g3g-onoff.htm
There is one widget in the market called 2g/3g, you can find it by just searching for '2g' or '3g'. This widget sends you to the correct settings page, but you still have to change the band yourself.
This is the way it has to work in Android. I guess the api does not allow access to the setting directly from applications .
thanks just tried it.
Didn't work exactly how I wanted. opening the widget takes you to the network menu in settings and from there you still need to change it to 2g or 3g.....still quicker than my old way.
thanks
Yes, like I said there is no other way at the moment. Hope to see it in the future, loved that toggle on my HTC Touch HD.
what u can do is put widgets from settings on your home screen which allow you do easily switch from 2g to 3g, switch wi-fi and bluetooth on/off. See my screen below.

I think that the mobile switch you've shown turns off mobile internet, so rather than 2g or 3g it switches internet on or off.
there is no other option in the settings for Desire.

edge in an incement within 2G, 2.5. Going back to the first post, what babyshaq wants, as i understand is just use GSM singal. This is what the widget does. Edge does not add anything to your calls.
No, as stated before:
- He wants to switch from 3G to 2G through a widget (not possible)
- The widget you are suggesting turns off the mobile network
no it doesnt. it turns off 3g. trust me
Ok man whatever you want. When I flip that switch my mobile network connection is disabled, if I'm on the 3G or 2G band.
If you want to make things up, fine with me, enjoy yourself.
Sorry jaykayslo, you are simply wrong.
That widget turns of mobile data. It has nothing to do with switching between 2G and 3G whatsoever.
turn that widget off and go to the mobile network settings.
you'll see that the connect to the internet box has been unticked.
turn the widget on, and the box is ticked.
babyshaq, that widget on the market that takes you to the settings page is as close as you can get. It's not ideal, i grant you, but it's the best you can do.
Oh, and btw, GSM, GPRS and EDGE are ALL considered 2G technologies!
no biggie. i use it switch mobile data to save battery. Plain GSM is enought for calls. Don`t see the point in switching to gprs or edge, because data transfer is so small its not worth it.
Yea thanks guys. I understand its either a shortcut to the settings or completely turn it off.
I guess we'll have to wait it out and hopefully it will be developed in the future
You wrong, it turn off the mobile internet connection ... completely.
Trust me Or try it yourself!

You can perfectly use EDGE for syncing "textual" data (twitter?) or weather data, or email ...
Yes, EDGE is too slow for web browsing.

yes we have established that. Semantically there is nothing wrong with my statement. It turns of 3G doesn`t it? But it doesn`t switch to 2G, which is what was sought after.

T-mobile Orange share on a root?

Hi all,
I'm running neo's latest 7.9 fully rooted etc. I've tried to take advantage of the fact that in the uk you're supposed to be able to use both tmobile and orange networks. Despite doing everything you're supposed to including running all steps via CS my sim card wont register on tmobile.
My question is, is this anything to do with de-branding or rooting?
Any help appreciated
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I don't see how it would. I'm rooted and debranded yet mine works. It just takes a while for it to work. When did you register it? And I don't think this is really 'development' by the way.
I was originally on T-Mobile, followed the steps and had all of the text messages (took around 24hrs for all of them to come through).
I had noticed that I was still getting around the same signal, which was weird as I practically sit next to an Orange transmitter.
Then I noticed I had to change my provider in the phone's settings from 't-mobile' to 't-mobile orange' and *wham* full strength.
Sorry - can't say from Orange to Orange/T-mobile.

I dont have that on my settings.
I have the usual single operator list. Maybe it will take 24 hours but I got the texts to confirm its been set up almost instantly.

I did this a few weeks ago and I didn't think it had made any difference whatsoever. Signal keeps dropping out for no reason, 3g is rubbish. Then just a few days ago I had a text come through "congratulating" me on connecting to T-Mobile for the first time, so I guess it is working.
I don't have any T-Mobile Orange option to choose though? Also, the Orange signal still seems to be cutting out. I'm considering ringing them up and telling them that they're in breach of contract and I'm terminating it because they can't provide the service they agreed to give me. Might shake them up a bit.
Have you tried turning on your data roaming in mobile network settings? It said something about it when I did it earlier on today and mine started working a minute after I'd text YES.
works fine for me. i'm running leedroid 2.2a and works perfectly. I now get full signal in my cellar where my signal used to cut out and my phone displays T-mobile (orange) T-mobile in the notification bar. the signal kicks in depended on the strength of the other carriers signal.
phono
EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE that what theyre calling it ... more like Some more in some places to be honest but...
download PHONO from android market..
it shows a great logo for each connected network and you roaming status.
and then providing you did the activation setup orange asked you to do - and you select roaming - it all works perfecly...

You guys know you're not supposed to "Choose" anything?
Infact, the only setting you should change is to allow Data while roaming (Roaming should already be enabled).
If you're on T-Mobile, it wont switch to Orange if the Orange signal is stronger than the T-Mobile one and vice-versa, this isn't coming until early 2011.
What it will do however is, if you drop your signal completely on 1 network and there is signal on the other network, you will roam on the other network until the phone can regain connectivity on the home network.
Moved to Q&A as not development.

Evo on Alltel NO 1X ?? 3G Works

I have used the latest licensed copy of CDMA workshop to change the SPC to 000000 on this Evo and set the NAM1 and EVDO settings EXACTLY identical to an Alltel flashed and branded HTC Hero, of course the usernames have been changed to my cell number... Has exact same PRL, everything.
I have rooted and it's running stock latest 2.2 sense rom.
It's up and working correctly on alltel's network, 5 Bars of 3G service but it says I am roaming, the Alltel branded Hero I have here is NOT roaming and is activated on a different cell number on the same alltel account in the family plan.
I re-read and re-wrote all the values in cdma workshop and re-compared everything to the hero, it's still roaming, tried *228'ing and updating PRL, updates correctly but... alltel pushes the same exact PRL 31005 that I originally programmed to it. This is the same PRL running on the stock alltel hero, evo still says it is roaming.
When I force the phone to CDMA only, I get nothing but "data call failure" messages and 1X will not work, 1X logo doesn't even show up on the status bar, when I have it in automatic mode (1x/3G) and I leave a 3G zone, where I know 1X works, the EVO will not connect to 1x, just keeps throwing "data call failure" messages at me. When it's connected to 3G it doesn't give me a problem at all, 3G works flawlessly in all apps until I try using wifi tether I get data call failure again, pdanet works perfectly with 3G though when tethered. 3G does not drop either, works perfectly. In ##DEBUG EVDO it shows Authenticated, I'd like 1X to work because not everywhere I go has 3G coverage and these data call failure errors are every 10 seconds when im not in a 3G zone.
What's the deal here? My last htc android phone (eris) that I flashed to alltel worked perfect, 1x and 3g switched when needed without issues. I have gotten rid of ALL sprint apk's in the system/app. Is there any other apps that are forcing the phone to try to 1x connect to sprint's network? Profile 0 and profile 1 on my programming are all set to alltel's data values.
Thanks for any help.
Ok Steve I guess I will illustrate this time what I have done so maybe this can help. I don't know what your area is like in regards to VZW or Sprint coverage, but I have found that the Evo does not like the Alltel PRL. I understand you used the identical prl when doing the Eris with no issues and I did the same with the HTC DInc but it's not the same game this time. The phone will say it is roaming even if you have your home SID set properly for your "correct" Alltel PRL. So here goes:

Network Vision and 1xRTT

So I noticed in downtown Milwaukee that I was stuck on 1x, but had full bars (on the sprint network). For fun I did a speed test, and was floored... 70KB (yes, bytes, not bits) down, 45KB up. I will upload a screenshot later when I can get to a PC.
I thought our phones wouldn't be able to take advantage of the upgraded data capacity of 1x?

That's what 1x is... It's far, far slower than 3G.

1x can't do 70KBytes/45KBytes
How are you determining your are on a 1xRTT connection?

The network icon in the status bar indicated 1x... I didn't believe it, so I checked Netmonitor (confirmed) and also did SpeedTest... See the screenshot of the details of the test.
Either funky things are happening with 1x, or my radio is reporting the wrong connection type. Although I know they are upgrading the 1x network somehow to accommodate the extra traffic Direct Connect is bringing... But as far as I know, the theoretical max of 1x is about 18KB.

With those ping times I can almost guarantee you are not on 1xRTT. Your data rates are even beyond the revised 1xRTT rates.
I am surprised they put the 1x notification back. Previous releases always said 3G regardless of whether you are on 1x or EVDO (on multiple sprint high-end phones)
What does ##DEBUG# say about your data connection?
When it asks for your lock code enter 777468 (SPRINT) (the equivalent #s from a phone dial pad)
BTW what is that 3rd notification icon (from the left) signifying?
Next time out drops to 1x, I'll check out debug and post here.
I'm running Calk's last gingerbread ROM. He has the 1x / 3g fix baked in. Until the last two weeks, I never noticed high speeds when it indicated 1x, but of course it's possible something on the code is reading the state wrong.
That third icon is the standard Android notification letting Mr know there is an open wifi signal.

For ##DEBUG# on GB, enter your MSL which you can get using "getprop ril.MSL" in adb shell

Disabling VoLTE (Verizon)

Hello all!
Is there a way to turn off VoLTE? I use my phone as a hotspot, so when I get a call, I don't have internet access. I'm assuming this is because of VoLTE since my last phone (Droid 4) didn't have this issue.
Thanks!

I always thought having that option disabled is what caused data to turn off during phone calls. I have it enabled and I can still use data while on the phone. That's the toggle to the off VoLTE though.

Sounds like you aren't using VoLTE in the first place. Turning it off won't give you data during a call it would do the opposite.

Talk and web is only available if you have advanced calling option turned on within your verizon account. Its free.
It doesn't sound like you're using VoLTE exactly because you stated you can't use simultaneous voice and data. Here's the deal: To save battery power or whatever, the additional radio added to Verizon and Sprint (CDMA) phones to enable 4G has been removed from a lot of them, rather converged.
Verizon has always had this problem and they got around it by, finally, adding an additional radio to handle the 4G to many phones. On CDMA networks it's either (I think analog) voice or (I think digital) data. Then, I guess expecting this great big transition to VoLTE (and only needing one radio to simultaneously handle LTE and Voice over LTE) "they" reverted phones to the original model. I mean that has to be it... I would gladly charge my phone more to be able to be able to hotspot and talk! Or maybe they want to sell more JetPacks and separate line access fees!
(This is what allows for all that red on their coverage maps as Verizon's original voice frequencies do rock for signal strength and reliability. The data maps look a lot more similar amongst the carrriers: concentrated on major "markets" as the efficiencies of cities drive the capital to create the networks--rural areas have lousy 4G coverage).
The GSM networks from T-mobile and AT&T automatically fall back to 2, 2.5, 3 and 4G frequencies and can use the newer and the older networks at the same time. You also get better conference calling (up to 5 people) and call management on the GSM based networks.
If you want to use voice and data at the same time on Verizon, edit your account preferences to enable Advanced Calling 1.0 for your line. It is free. Also enable Enhanced 4G LTE mode as shown in the screenshot.
But VoLTE seems to bring its own issues: call complete rates will drop, call quality will drop, static bursts occur at the beginning of calls... it's a real mess.
I really miss T-Mobile, but their network isn't as good and I save money being on the family plan with others on Verizon.
Hi guys, I am having the opposite issue.
I can't get VoLTE ("HD Voice") to work. As a result, no internet when I'm on a phone call. A real pain in the butt.
I'm on CM13 on my Nexus 5x and using Verizon.
I had previously activated this feature on the Verizon website, and it shows the VoLTE flag is 'on' in the phone info/service settings menu. I've seen posts elsewhere where people say CM13 is not working properly with VoLTE.
Should I flash to a different ROM perhaps? Appreciate any ideas...
