[Q] GSM Galaxy Nexus 300kbps - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

My 3g was working very slow so i downloaded this app called sppedtest.net and my download speed is around 290-350 kbps and the upload speed test gives an error it can't even complete, what is wrong with my phone, i have unlocked it officially

would flashing a new radio help?

Are you in a bad 3g area with your provider?

What carrier? If on AT&T, you need to have it 4g provisioned

i am gsm, from romania, orange. in my house, this is not the problem because my samsung galaxy s 2 i had before was blazing fast..

here is a screenshot

please help?

I'm using a CDMA Verizon Nexus and my Speed Test app won't even work half the time. When it does my 3G speeds never go higher than what you show. Have yet to have uploads past 100kbps. I'm on my second Nexus already.

It's probably the tower and/or the server you're testing on, not the phone.
My GN blazes:

I went from xxkk1 to xxkk6 radio and i get better dl speeds now.

funny thing is that i have the xxkk6 now, so this is a software bug?

????????????

can someone answear pls

please can no one help?i can't do nothing without wifi and i am paying for unlimited data plan for nothing

a lot of us are from the US here so we won't be able to do much to help you since your an orange subscriber. if you notice, most of us have usa companies in our sidebar.
as far as your issue. i don't think it's something with the phone. your best bet is to go into the orange store where you bought the device and talk to them about the issue and see whats going on.
i'm on T-Mobile USA, and i've had no issues with the speedtest app and have been getting on average 5Mbps down on 3G.

I have the same issue with my Galaxy Nexus. It is bought from Spain. I have tried all GSM radios, several ROMs, including the stock ones, nothing. The same SIM, in a Galaxy S II, on SpeedTest.net app (same server) gets 5 mbps, on my Nexus it never goes past 300kbps and it extremely jittery.
I suspect the phone is defective. What are your thoughts?

Your best bet is to call up your service provider and have them run through the settings of your access point names with you to make sure the settings are right.
If it's a hardware problem, you will most likely not be able to connect to 3G at all.

That gave me an idea and I found the problem. On each reboot Orange forces down my throat the settings and it defaults to WAP. THAT is why nothing works on mobile data; if I delete all APNs and manually create just the one for data it is fine.

what phone did you have before and how much did you use your data....could be tmobile throtteling
I'm only getting about 5-6Mbps which I would get on my MT4G... but it's the service in this area, not the phone's fault
HOWEVER
I am getting such bad upload speeds it's puzzling.. giving the phone time to adjust, I'll test again tomorrow because for some reason anytime I change phones the data connection seems to act weird the first day..
The phone in my store which is in a 42mbps area gets 15mbps with every test I did.
I'm getting 8 - 12 Mbps avg.
Just did a test right now and got 10,390 kbps using a 1MB file.
Seems pretty much the same as my HD2.
Remember that HSPA+ speeds are theoretical, the chances of you reaching those speeds are slim.
ok so after two t mobile calls and numerous network resets im getting absolutely ****ty speed test results. the browsing is ok but seems to be really laggy. hmm..
also noticed under settings/aboutphone/signal/MobileNetworkType i get UMTS and it will switch to HSPA randomly. could this be the reason? or should it say HSPA+? can someone verify this?
You won't get 4G speeds everywhere.
im aware of this..
i had a sgs4g which i lost 2 weeks ago and it was nothing like this.
it feels like my connection is capped at 56k
It could be the network, there could just be a lot of congestion. It happens to me sometimes too, one day I'll get 12mbps & the next I won't be able to get over 5. Try your sim in another phone if you can & see if you get the same results.
i used to get anywhere from 5mbps to 15mbps with the sgs4g.
im ashamed to say that i am getting half a mbps. lol
Speeds suck near Phoenix 2.4mbps
i talked to t mobile couple days ago, the technical support had to issue a ticket in order for it to get resolved. the lady said that my Internet should be back to speed in 3 days! Its not phone related its definitely a network glitch of some sort because i am getting 60 kbits. My very first bill cycle is days shy from being over and yet i have not been able to use 4g speeds.. even edge speeds is faster than what i am getting. I believe i shouldn't be held responsible to pay the web data portion of my bill for this month. its only fair.
Try this (if you haven't already).
Pull up your dialer, then dial
*#*#4636#*#*
Select "phone information"
Scroll to the bottom and select
Either "WCDMA Preferred" or "WCDMA Only".
This can be changed from the network settings also. However, I had ****ty data speeds at first too and, for some strange reason, the two menus did not match up... Using the dialer method it was on GSM and inexplicably went back to GSM on its own a couple times.
Hate to say... But if tmo says they are filing a ticket, most of the time the rep just exhausted what their knowledge or troubleshooting is telling them to do and a ticket doesn't change anything.
The GS2 should unquestionably whip the MT4G, HD2, SENSATION as well as most other phones in data speeds, consistently. I can say this from personal experience.
Interested to know how it turns out for you.

data speeds are eye popping!
This phone is great! I'm getting a whopping 60kbps/30kbps. We really standing still now! Tmo tech say everything is fine on there end so back to the store I go.
Sounds like your throttled, or your stuck in gsm/edge mode. Check to see also if your on gsm/wcdma, thts what it should be on. You could be on 2g/gsm setting. I put mines on tht setting from time to time.

I thought the same thing but tmo said I'm not throttled. gsm/wcdma(auto) is checked.
Thank for the advice though.
Edit: I put the Sim back in my vibrant and the speeds are the same. So I'm going with bad Sim or they are throttling me and don't know it. To be continued.
So they put in a work order and said they will get back to me within 72hrs. If it's not fixed I'm going to sprint. Tried the Sim in the amaze and sgs2 in store same speeds. Funny thing one of the questions asked while filling out the work order "do you tether?" Lol. Of course not.
I'm getting as high as 13mbps and almpst 2 upload speed. My g2x got half of that at best most of the time...

Rogers download speeds

I'm currently on Rogers Canada right now. I have the Gnex NON-LTE version. I've been doing speedtests on my device and I've constantly been getting around 250kB/s, usually less. There are a couple times where I reached 850kB/s but most of the time just 250 which is quite slow. I've tested this in open areas.
The baseband it came with is UGKL1. I've been downloading stuff and usually I get around 250kb/s or even slower.
I now switched to the newer radio UGLA4. I am getting about the same results. Once or twice I did speedtests and got 640kb/s.
My feeling is that its Rogers network that's constantly giving me poor download speeds. Does anyone else have faster speeds with non-LTE Gnex on rogers? Any solutions? I've looked around but to no avail.
I just tested mine (Rogers Network) and I was getting a consistent 1mb/s upload and download. I do however at the moment have a good quality hspa connection.

That's not the LTE version right? What baseband are you using and where are you located in canada? I'm in the Vancouver region.
I think I partially figured out the reason why I'm getting slow speeds. I'm currently using AOKP ROM (milestone 4). There's a power saver setting where if I'm idle for a certain amount time (ie 10mins) it turns my connection to 2G. Yes I set that up. Once I wake my device it turns 3G/HSDPA back on. However going into the secret menu (*#*#4636#*#*) I noticed that the preferred network type is set on "GSM/CDMA auto". This is likely the be the issue, if I want HSDPA it should be set on WCDMA. Now I've set that to WCDMA Preferred. Doing a speed test I'm getting speeds of 400-500kb/s. That's a drastic improvement. However upload remains to be the same at around 150kb/s. However keeping the power saving option it reverts back to the "GSM/CDMA auto" after idle time.
I don't think I have quite solved my issue as this device should be about to download/upload at faster speeds. I'm going to change back to my old baseband and see. Please let me know the details about your phone, thanks!
Edit: I see you're from PEI. Let me know your baseband still, thanks!
That doesn't sound like a radio problem, sounds more like a tower problem. Have you triend driving around ant testing your signals in different places? I usually get between 2,5 and 9mps in and around montreal. Where did you try? Were your four signal bars on with the H and the arrow?

Yes I have. I get about the same results. I have tried both open areas and inside buildings. I just reinstalled old radio and my speeds with WCDMA only enabled gets me about 300+kB/s.
Just to clarify my kB/s or kb/s is kilobytes for seconds (not bits).
I doubt we should be having tower problems in Vancouver though....
So I tried driving around more with the new baseband I got about 1000kB/s. Upload was still slow at around 200kB/s. Any reason why? I found some people believe that rogers caps the limit but still too low for me.
Could possibly be your carrier throttling the speed? For most users 250kbs is more than enough.
I have the gsm version and live in the UK. If I get 2.5mb download speeds over HSPA I consider it fast!

I'm on Bell, I get between 6-9Mbps down and 2.5-3.5Mbps up consistently.
Yea it's been pretty much up and down for me. Most of the time I get around 500kbyte/s and around 230 indoor. Upload is just pure crap for me outside or in. I've been getting around 150-200kbyte/s, mostly 160ish. Sometimes I even get 80kB/s. This is a problem and I don't know if its the phone or just poor coverage. I'm leaning towards poor coverage as I did manage to get a fast 900kbyte/s download and 250kbyte/s upload.
To those moving to mobilicty, honestly the coverage with them is worse. I can't stand dropped calls. I have friends who are on both wind and mobilicity and they tell me about the dropped calls. I sometimes have to make important calls and dropped calling is a nono. They can deal with it but for me I can't.
I've been with Mobilicity for just over a year now and I have never once had a dropped call. Coverage is poor though I've just never been on a call with poor coverage I guess. Basically if you stay editing the gta minus oakville you will have no problems

Network Selection Issue (T-Mobile)

Hi,
For 12 months i've been fighting with T-Mobile UK, insisting that theres an issue with their network and poor web speeds with their inept customer service team continuing to blame the handset (even though Ive had two handsets and tested my sim card in others).
Anyway yesterday I finally cracked it, its to do with T-Mobile sharing with Orange.
When I set the network to automatic, most of time it reverts to "T-Mobile Orange" on this I get les than 0.5 meg download speeds however if I manually change it to just the "t-mobile" network I get 4 meg which is what it should be.
The problem is however my Nexus reverts back to Automatic randomly which puts me on Oranges' poor network.
T-Mobile are refusing to help and are insiting I just need to manually select the network despite me saying my phone reverts
My question is, how can I ensure that my nexus only uses the t-mobile network and doesnt revert back to auto?
Thanks in advance for the help.

I'm sorry I can't help you, but this is interesting. My GNex *never* switches onto T-Mobile Orange unless I force it manually. I had come to think that the Automatic function just doesn't work as my phone is happy to sit there with a totally lost signal. I've found T-Mobile's customer service a million times better than O2, but they're all inept really and if they can't troubleshoot from a list of problems they are incapable of using their brains. Hope you get it sorted out.

If you are on tmo-orange signal then you are only on 2g.
The better option would be to change the signal to 3g only. This will stay on tmobile. I have been in T-Mobile for years and have never had a problem with internet speeds. However bare in mind that you will be throttled if you use a lot on the web and walk package

Wrong.
The 3G merger is complete. To be honest, I've only ever noticed appalling download speeds when roaming onto Orange once, but as you say reverting to normal T-Mobile fixes it.
I have mine set to stay on T-Mobile-Orange permanently and it never loses the setting, so it is possible to do.
It is far from complete. I do apologise if it'd complete in your area. Didn't take that into account. Buts not complete yet. Last time they showed me a display its was like Swiss cheese below humberside

Can only go from what I was told by T-Mobile (who provide my work phone) who warned of network disruption in December while the final parts of the 3G network were merged.

Hspa+ speeds slow

Hey all. Im not sure what it is but I have called att and they clame it is my phone and not something on their side.
Anyway ive been traveling from PA to NJ and VA all getting hspa+ connecfion but my download speeds are 50kb/s and not much better upload. The exception is connecting to lte but everywhere else is utter crap. Im sure I was getting better speeds when I got the phone so im not sure what I did.
I tried to flash another rom. Flash the stock modem again.
Does anyone have any ideas of what could be causing this?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
Well their is two versions of hspa+ you have hspa+ & hspa+ combined with enhanced backhaul. According to the documentation that came with the phone hspa+ combined with enhanced backhaul is the one capable of 4G speeds, but this is only available in limited areas and your phone can't distinguish which hspa+ network it's connected too. So you may be connected to just hspa+ which may not be much faster than 3g depending on the quality of your connection.
Well I just placed my sim into my GS2 (had to line it up) and I was getting 2.5 MB/s down with that phone and only 300kb/s down on the Note 2. So something is up with my phone. I have reset it back to factory and used triangle away in hopes of returning it to get a replacement.
Does anyone have any ideas of what I can try? Im willing to try anything
I managed to fix it!!! I went into the service mode **#197328640#) and changed some values. I set the cdma to be automatic and reset two other values and BOOM! Reset the phone and now am getting 6MB/s down and 2MB/s up. Glad that I don't have to send the phone back!
What other values? I live in that area. At my house I get about 6 down but everywhere else is been .5 and 2 mb/s.... And I have Wifi at home so the house speed is irrelevant.

Sorry, been away studying. Ill try to remember.
Mind you I have little knowledge of what these values do so I take no responsibility. Maybe someone who knows something about them can post what they do..
First off get into service mode with the dialer code mentioned above. Than:
CDMA>Common>REBUILD
" > " > PREF Mode Set > CDMA_HDR_LTE_ONLY
" >Control>CDMA_band_select>Automatic
After that I did a reboot and it was working again. Let me say this will only apply if your speeds are in the ****ters everywhere. I was only getting a max of 500kb/s download everywhere I went (I traveled a few states recently and it was all bad except for LTE areas).
If you think its your device check another device before. I put my micro sim back into my Galaxy s2 (had to fidget to get the sim to line up) and ran a test and it was 3mb/s vs the 450kb/s on the note.
If this helps anyone Ill be interested to hear, I'm pretty sure I screwed it up in the first place but maybe ATT just sent out some bad devices and I did not notice till I tried.

Werid 4g speeds, need help ruling out phone or network

I bought a Tmobile Galaxy S3 on new years from staples, and since ive got the phone ive been experiencing strange 4g speeds. While im in my house, I always have full signal strength, and it always says 4G. I live in the Bronx in New York City, and when the 4g is working properly, I get upwards of 20 megabits down, and 1-2 up. Now I could literally be sitting in the exact same spot, and later ill test the phone and it says 0.2 - 0.3 megabits, and like over 1000 ping and the up is so slow it doesnt even measure it. It usually comes back after waiting, turning airplane mode off and on multiple times or doing a battery pull. I find it strange that I can get either 21 mbps or 0.3 in the same house, while always having full bars. In the phone status sometimes it would say UTMS or HSPA, so it does switch from 3g to 4g sometimes. The thing is my previous phone was Nexus S with 3g and im pretty sure I never had a problem loading a simple image in my house because the internet was so slow. I consistently pulled 3-6 mbps on that phone. I tried calling t-mobile 3 times and they give me the same basic crap, like clear your cache, make sure airplane mode is off (really?) make sure youre network mode is on auto (i tried auto and wcdma only and it still gets slow) and all that other stuff. Is there anything else I could try to see if its a network or phone issue?
It sounds like it might be something with your local tower. I would call Tmobile and put in a repair ticket.

Thanks, I just did that. Called t-mobile and just directly asked them to check for tower issues, and they filed a complaint. They said to check back in 3 days, hopefully this gets fixed, or else it might be the phone. Do you think flashing different modems would change anything?

It wouldn't hurt to try. What are you currently running? (rom/kernel/modem)
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Completely stock 4.1.1, with UVDLJA modem, which is the latest I believe. The phone is relatively new so I wanted to try touchwiz before I rooted. Does installing something like cm10 change the modem? Or is it independent of rom/kernel. I saw an application for tmo that can change between multiple modems pretty quickly, I might give it a try.

I work for T-Mo,
If I may lend my opinion,
To me, it definitely sounds like the tower. If you go from 20Mbit down to 0.2, and with 1000ms latency, it's super obvious there is something
wrong with the tower, or there is significant demand on the tower from other users, hey its NYC population density is insane.
Something to note as well, New York City is "in progress" for "network modernization" where they are switching to 1900Mhz.
This is why some people who have iPhones are now getting 3G in certain areas, unlocked devices, as well as AT&T phones can have 3G down there.
Due to this, since there is quite a lot of switching around going on down there, that's probably what's going on.
Example:
http://www.tmonews.com/2013/01/t-mobiles-network-modernization-what-is-it-where-can-i-get-coverage/
Hope it helps.
I see, well that makes sense. I dont really mind if its a tower issue because thatll be fixed eventually, I just would of hated if I had to replace the phone, it would of been such a hassle because I didnt buy it direct from t-mo. Thanks to both of you!
Also, since t-mobile seems to be using multiple bands for 4g, I guess it would be better to leave it on auto in network settings?

If it helps you at all to see if you are on a different band than 1700/2100mhz
You can go into the dialer and do:
*#0011#
Up top mine says band 4
Which is for 1700mhz AWS
BAND 2
which is for 1900mhz PCS.
You might be on band 4 or 2 on a tower by tower basis, or if they are making adjustments
You might be switched but that is above my pay grade lol
