Defective Screen? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello XDA, long time lurker here. Just got a new GSM Galaxy Nexus from negri electronics. Everything is as it should. First thing to do was to check the screen. Using a dead pixel app, I managed to find just one but felt like I could live with it (plus it has to be 5+ to be considered defective for negri electronics exchange).
The problem is I am noticing what seems to be a slight light leak/fade on the upper right hand of the screen. It's really not noticeable in any other colors except for gray/dark gray colors. Unfortunately, most of ICS apps (market, settings) have a band of gray on top which makes the right corner very apparent. I know that the gnex has pentile technology, and it seems that the rest of the screen does exhibit this sort of leakage/fade throughout but it is most obvious on the upper right. I'm not sure if it's attributable to a defective screen or is common amongst gnex
I'm also a bit worried due to negri's exchange policy and whether or not this would qualify. Tried to take a photo with my DSLR, can't capture it well.
Anyone else experience something like this, or noticed inconsistent quality with the display?

replacing

Hey, just wondering how verizon replacements work? I got my gnexus on release day and I just now noticed that I have vertical banding on white areas. Do I just go into the store and ask for a replacement? Would they be giving me a brand new gnexus or a refurb?
Just like any other replacement. Tell them theres a problem and they'll assess whether or not it warrants a replacement. You get a refurb more than likely, although this early in the game it might be new.
Check out some of the other threads on this. Seems like lots of people have "banding" and it might be more of a fact that its a AMOLED screen rather than a defect.
theres banding on all of them when the brightness is turned down. its because of the screen.
I've noticed that the banding on mine goes away after the screen has been on for 5 minutes or so. As far as I know, every device has the banding in some form. Just an effect of AMOLED tech. I only get it when the screen is display a solid grey color.
To me, doesn't really effect the day to day operation of the device or how it looks. HD media looks great. Games look great. Screen is vibrant and amazing.
Now, if you have very noticeable color sploches or uneven color tones that you notice at every brightness level, you need to get a replacement. But the banding is no biggie
You're definitely going to want to beware of going through the trouble of a replacement for the banding "issue". Consensus appears that there's somewhat significant banding on whites around 50% brightness and lower. It's somewhat annoying, but it's apparently an artifact of the AMOLED and not specific to your unit.
Just think of it as papyrus or something...

Slight light bleed and banding on screen. Should I still keep it

So I ordered a galaxy nexus on google play.
The screen for the most part looks great.
The greys are better than the galaxy nexus that my mom uses.
However I have noticed two issues.
There is some banding that you can see sort of in the pictures that i attached. Of course it is easier to see in real life than the pictures. IT doesn't really bother me that much though and I think my mom Gnex also has it. Seems to be in all GNex's.
The other issue that bothers me more is the light leakage in the lower left corner of the screen(looking at it in portrait). It is hard to tell in the pictures.
It doesn't really show on a black screen or during anything with colors.
The only time it seems to be very obvious is when in the settings menus. The grey background there for some reason shows it. The lower left corner is just brighter than the rest.
The one pictures shows the phone in landscape orientation, so the bottom left corner is the bottom right of the picture.
I am wondering whether I should return it at this point. It seems silly to me since everything else is pretty acceptable and its really not such a big deal. I don't want to be overly perfectionist with this cause its never gonna be perfect.
What do you guys think?
Thanks for your thoughts.
I think what you're seeing is normal. Mine looks like that from day one. I have slight purple at lowest brightness. Welcome to the internet. The world where normal phenomena can easily be turned into an epidemic and 1WS rules.
...of the people, by the people, for the people...
I don't see any unevenness on either of mine in the same settings menu. If you're wanting encouragement to exchange it, then I would offer that encouragement.
The grainy-ness and banding, as you said, seems to be in all of the panels, but i've yet to see one that has brighter spots.
I know the average person wouldn't in a million years notice it.
But I inspect a device when it arrives and look for things like that.
I may just end up giving it to my dad for whom I plan to order a Gnex in any case.
But for me, I can deal with normal imperfections but I don't like things that are obvious like that.

Found black blotches on my screen

Okay. so I have a few black blotches on my screen, but I can only see them on a certain kind of black, but here's how to tell if you have this issue go to phone click on the menu key than call settings now go to call rejections from in there look at your phone screen at all every angle possible, if you don't see black blotches than you don't have an issue like I do.
Good luck
Also try doing this in the dark

Looks like a manufacturing defect, the blotches are in the same place on everyone s phone.
Weird mine are on the bottom half of the screen

It's normal. Samoled at its finest.

I don't see them on that screen because the blacks are too black also I'm in a brighter lit room. But if I am watching a movie and it goes dark I can see minor blotches.
I noticed this and I took it to warrenty but they refused to replace or fix it. I dunno what to do. Is this breach of contract?

You would have to LIVE WITH THE STAINS AND BLOTCHES...
This is widely known issue known as OLED "mura" effect
It has stains and many black dots affecting the Galaxy S2, Note, S3, PS Vita and even some of the Galaxy S1 devices...
This is due to cheap manufacturing and QA ...

Is it this, or is it a limitation of the AMOLED manufacturing process? My blotches are very minimal and I very rarely ever see them. I would much rather have the contrast of the AMOLED tech with the blotches than have my S3 equipped with an LCD.

Definitely not an limitation of the manufacturing process.. My first-gen Samsung Captivate's screen blacks are actually deeper than the my Galaxy S3 with maximum brightness, displaying the same completely black #000000 screen in a completely dark bedroom at night...
Also what I have realized is that on my Captivate's screen, it do not has any of the stains or the dots on it when viewed in a dark room.. It has a little bit of "banding" problem on the top portion of the screen, but it is less noticeable than the stains and especially the "black dots" effect...
I have the EXACTLY same problem with my PS Vita similar to my Galaxy S3, but the PS Vita has much more stains than dots than the GS3 (more imperfection) although the PS Vita is lower resolution, and slightly bigger screen. The PS Vita uses the Samsung Super AMOLED Advanced (pentile matrix)...
Also, the screen production is not consistent on the GS3. My first GS3 has Wi-Fi random disconnection issues, so I exchanged it under the 15 days policy from Rogers, for another GS3.. The original GS3 has a lot of "black dots" (approx around 15 or so) and slightly stained on the top right corner.. The exchanged GS3 was slightly better and had no stain marks and only a few black dots and a slight pink spot (when viewed on white #FFFFFF).. Also I had to exchange my second one back to the store because my battery cover had some hairline cracks within a week of usage or so..
The THIRD AND FINAL GS3 I received did not have any stains, but suffered a more severe "black dot" effect (approx. 15-20 dots).. But my Wi-Fi issue was fine, and there are no pink spots, so I have been using it until now and did not really bother an exchange....
If you are extremely lucky, you might get a "perfect" or "near perfect" AMOLED in the current generation... But still the QA is going down the toilet when compared to my First Phone with Super AMOLED, my Samsung Wave S8500 (the screen was PERFECT on this one, NO stains/dots/smudges etc...)
Samsung is cutting costs and lowering QA because it is fulfilling more AMOLEDs for other manufacturers such as themselves (its is not just the top of the line Galaxy S# series using AMOLED, mid-end and some lower ends Galaxy series are using AMOLED as well) Also Samsung has to supply for Motorola, HTC (fewer models though), Sony (only for PS Vita), Fujitsu (for the Japanese Keitai smartphone from KDDI and Docomo) and so on.....
Now all this happened in quite short period of time, Japanese keitais with OLEDs came on the market last year... Samsung Wave came onto the market in 2010, there is only a 1 - 1.5 years in between here... The demand exponentially increased as smartphone sales went up, and more manufacturers are contracting Samsung to build OLEDs..
Personally, I do not think the process of making OLEDs have improved....
THE ONLY area it might have improved is probably the PRINTING... Printing higher resolutions has allowed Samsung to increase the pixel density and decreasing the subpixels (and this is probably why the Super AMOLED HD screens are dimmer than the original Super AMOLEDs at the same maximum brightness)
That is all I can say for now...
Live with the miniscule defects such as stains, dots, smudges etc on your OLEDs.... These problems are minor issues anyways since you have to be in a very dark environment with almost complete black #000000 image to be able to pick up the "defects".... Wait for a few more generations and allow the manufacturing process to improve more and still be able to fulfill Samsung's own demands and contracted demands for other manufacturers..... (Or other companies might finally bring more and more of their own technologies in OLED to the consumer masses)...
END OF RANTS...

It's normal ever since the hd samoleds came out. Same problem across many manufacturers. My razr was horrible with this stuff.

Mine has the defect but I only see it when in a very dark environment and only on a certain black type of screen. Normally the black screen that shows up when starting a Netflix video I will see it for a moment. It doesn't bother me that much but do agree that it looks like s***! Other than the blotches in a dark environment though, you'd never see it.
I also noticed these spots too. I do not think it is a big deal foudn a few threads talking about other phones and most people agree it is common and only effects the screen when theres nothing moving on it. In other words yes you will notice it but no your screen is not damaged.

Nexus color temp uniformity

Hello,
I just got "new" Nexus 7, and I think it is a great device, but there is one thing that bothers me. The display has color temp uniformity issues. If I hold Nexus front camera top, screen gets yellowish towards bottom of the device. It is a slight deviation, not yellow spots, but I can see it, and my brain keeps focusing at it . Of course, it is most noticable on pure white background.
So, I wanted to ask, is this a common behavior? Does every (or many) Nexus 7s have the same color temp issue, or do you have perfectly even display, and mine is somehow corrupted? Thank you
We have the exact same thing with the two of our activated Nexus 7's (16GB), probably same batch. Bluish on the camera side, yellowish on the usb port side. On top of that mine seems to have a speck of dirt behind the glass... It's barely noticable with normal usage though. I'm considering buying a 32GB model and selling this one. I'm guessing (hoping) it's not too common, since this is the only post I could find about this (slight) issue.

Irregular Display Lighting (with Pictures)

I have a visible light strip at the top of the display... what should I do? I say to myself I don't care but it annoys me because I keep noticing it.
Here pictures, please check them out:

That's light bleed
do you have it too? should I send it back or do all lg g4 have this?
Pictures are not loading.
Weird... heres the drive folder:

That's light bleed - light seeping from the backlight into the edges of the display. Happens when the display is compressed/bent during installation into the phone. Nothing you can do about it but get the phone exchanged if it bothers you that much. However, if you exchange it, it's the luck of the draw - you might get a better one or a much worse one.
Unfortunately, all LCD displays are prone to this, as manufacturers would have to reject something like 50% of them otherwise - I had to go through SIX brand-new 27" Dell monitors before I found two that I could live with - and they're still far from perfect.
I had to exchange my iPad Mini twice to get a good display, and my Nexus 9 three times. It's totally random. Got lucky with my G4 that has a perfect screen (though I had to exchange it, too, as the first one had dust stuck between the front glass and the display panel).
Manufacturers just have really low "acceptable quality" standards to maximize profits/units sold, as many people will never notice those issues.

I see thanks, I had some light bleed (I knew what it is didn't remember the english word LOL) on my N4 too but nowhere near this and it didn't seem like a solid strip more random...
Sent it back... hope I got luck with the next one, and hope Amazon is quick my current phones battery is pretty much dead...
