[Q] can i root stock? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Can i root my phone and just keep stock ROM ? I just want to wait for new roms to be released on new base...

Yea rooting always leaves you stock first. Its always an option to flash a custom ROM.

Run.. your phone may explode at any moment.
Worse case you will have to re root the phone. Not a biggy tho.. Rooting this thing is exceptionally easy.

That's your JB OTA. You can accept and it will install (if you have a stock recovery), or fail (if a custom recovery). If on stock recovery, you will loose root, but can just root again. If on custom recovery, nothing will happen, but you'll continue to receive the notification until you either have a build.prop that matches the latest base, or flash a ROM based on the latest base. Which is my recommendation. Browse the options available in the Android Development thread, choose one of the LJ7 ROMs, flash, and be happy!
ROM - Odexed Blue JB "Holy Grail" LJ7
Baseband - LJ7

If I wanna upgrade to the official JB and my S3 is rooted with custom rom, is it safe to upgrade to official jb via Kies? Or should I go back to stock ics before upgrading?

If you want to go from a custom ROM to stock JB, Kies won't do it. You will need to flash via Odin. You will loose root and your custom recovery.

Link please ? Do that Odin program and how to flash JB on it
If you're going to have to use odin anyway, you should consider installing mrRobinson's root-injected stock jellybean rom. Then you won't have to worry about rooting it. Worked awesome on my stock rooted ICS with stock recovery. Also worked awesome on my son's stock rooted ICS with CWM. Here's the link. Everything you need to know is in the first post.

Do I need to get rid of my custom rom if I wanna upgrade? If I don't, will it brick it?

Flashing Rom question

I am currently on aopk right now and I am planning on flashing something else. The question is.. Do I have to put my phone back to stock to flash a new rom? What's the easiest way to flash a new rom while currently running a custom Rom?

Compete a full wipe and install the same way you did your current custom ROM. No need to return to stock.

Unless your going from an AOSP or AOKP or CM10 rom to a stock based rom such as Ultimatum that are on different versions of JB (4.2 to 4.1.1). You would most likely soft brick if you did not go back to stock first.
Other than that it is not necessary.

Actually it won't, you just have to do a factory reset to wipe data, then flash away. No need to flash back to stock.

[Q] Safe to downgrade from 4.3 custom rom to 4.1.2 custom rom?

As the topic said, is it safe to downgrade from 4.3 , knox free custom rom to 4.1.2 custom rom?
another question is, once I installed any 4.3 knox free custom rom, is it safe to restore my 4.1.2 rooted stock rom backup without any problem?
For both question I use philz recovery.
I dare not to flash any 4.3 custom rom if I can't find any answer.
Thanks in advance!

I am not trying to scare you but I have read people saying their phone is ****ed up after flashing 4.3 rom. Now they want their phone to just work. if you're lucky you will run 4.3 flawlessly otherwise you will post a thread asking about how to make your phone work again

As per my knowledge there is no issue to downgrade from knox free ROM. However you needs to read a lot to do so.

[Q] Bootloader and AOSP Roms

I've been reading that the leaked kitkat touch wiz Roms have a new bootloader and you cannot flash back. My question is, do kitkat AOSP Roms have this new bootloader as well? I want to flash an AOSP Rom but don't want to get stuck.
Sent from my SM-N900T using XDA Premium HD app
Unsure what they mean by stuck... Flashed latest cm and decided I didn't like it and just restored my latest cwm backup which was to jedi and I have had no issues. Would love an explanation too.

Thanks for the reply, what I mean is I've read flashing a tw kitkat Rom with the new bootloader prevents you from flashing back to a 4.3 Rom (what I meant by stuck). I was wondering if the same would happen if I flashed a kitkat AOSP rom. Seeing as you were able to flash back I guess my question is answered.
Sent from my SM-N900T using XDA Premium HD app
Custom ROMs like CM don't flash bootloader changes, so you can go back if you want.
Official TW ROMs flashed via Odin or OTA update typically contain bootloaders.
These are the ones that you want to avoid.
