Updating rooted with custom rom - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

If I wanna upgrade to the official JB and my S3 is rooted with custom rom, is it safe to upgrade to official jb via Kies? Or should I go back to stock ics before upgrading?

If you want to go from a custom ROM to stock JB, Kies won't do it. You will need to flash via Odin. You will loose root and your custom recovery.

Link please ? Do that Odin program and how to flash JB on it

If you're going to have to use odin anyway, you should consider installing mrRobinson's root-injected stock jellybean rom. Then you won't have to worry about rooting it. Worked awesome on my stock rooted ICS with stock recovery. Also worked awesome on my son's stock rooted ICS with CWM. Here's the link. Everything you need to know is in the first post.

Do I need to get rid of my custom rom if I wanna upgrade? If I don't, will it brick it?

Not really because if he has a rom with a different kernel other than stock he will be stuck with that kernel image if he doesn't flash/odin stock kernel first.

[Q] SGH T999V Back to Stock so i can get OTA from Samsung

So I'm Custom Firmware FrostyJB and want to go back to stock as this has a few bugs. and i want to recieve OTA from Samsung.
I made a nandroid but my phone does not seem to register it.
any idea what i should do?
You have to restore a nandroid backup with the same recovery you made it with.
Otherwise download the stock fw and flash with odin. Flash the VLALH2 and youll have the up to date fw already. No need to wait for ota to dl and install.

So im on stock rooted and lets say i get the update but im rooted do i need to unroot to proceed ??.. or i can do it whit root? Cant wait for some jellybean goodies

Root should be fine. Its the custom recovery that'll prevent you from even being able to get the update.
You will lose root though unless you use voodoo rootkeeper or mobile odin pro.

Its pretty straight forward actually. There should be steps laid out in post 2 of the fw thread and I believe Theexel hasit in his thread stickied in this section.
If you have any problems let me know, but don't see a reason to retype it all again!

Along the same lines...I just got an s3 yesterday and rooted stock 4.0.4. Used OTA root keeper, downloaded the ota for JB and when I attempt to upstate it fails....I have stock recovery. No idea why it keeps failing. I would Odin the prerooted JB but my wife doesn't want to lose her settings she already set up. Any ideas?

You probably have a custom recovery causing it to fail.
Regardless of how you update you will possibly lose some settings. Its recommended, but not required to do a clean update anyway. But flashing with odin should preserve your settings as well as the ota would. Once they boot up it shouldn't matter as the resulting build is the same.

Depends if you've done anything to your current build.
Cwm will flash it, but I just don't care for it. Caused probs for quite a few people.
But you have to be full stock. No mods, no deodexing, no bloat removal, no modems flashed, etc.
Then you should be able to flash it in cwm.
Its preferred you do it through stock recovery. You can use voodoo rootkeeper to preserve root.

About root...

Hello all...
I have a note 2 with stock firmware android 4.3, and unfortunately with knox, I did root, with chainfire auto root and does not work superSu!!!
It do not has root acces!!!
does anyone know what I need to do, please?
I would like to know if I can unroot and install stock firmware with android 4.1.2 I do not have any issue?
I will be waiting for your help, thanks
I know that you are very busy, but can anyone help me with this, please?
Is my question in wrong place?
Do you have access to custom recovery. If so flash a custom 4.3 rom. Ill recommend the s.w.a.r.m rom
If not ill google how to downgrade to 4.1.2 or google how to get rid of knox
If you want to stay stock flash Mr Robinsons rom, it is stock, rooted and Knox-free.

My phone is stock rooted but not on Mr Robinson's. Performance wise it should be same or better than stock ROM since it's the stock ROM.

Are you saying the MrRobinson's ROM isn't rooted ? Did you try the version 2 he posted ? I know that the first one had some issues.
If you are on 4.1.2 and only use PC odin for flashing then you can flash this stock rooted, knox-free ROM I uploaded here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2636552
This ROM will not update your bootloader and you can switch back to 4.1.2 using PC odin.

You do not understand me, right now it has 4.3 stock Rom with Knox, and I did root with chainfire auto-root, but does not work!
It do not has any root access, is impossible flash custom recovery.
Can I unroot, and install via Odin stock firmware 4.1.2, it has any issue?
I appreciated your help.
No problem,
You can install Mr Robinsons root 66 rom, make sure you download the v2 version and you will be all set.

But, Can I flash anhoter Rom?
If I downgrade via Odin, with stock firmware, android 4.1.2. Can I?
Because I would like to flash some cm Rom.
Your phone is already on 4.3 bootloader and there is no way to downgrade that.
But you can still flash any 4.1.2 ROM'S as long as you do not flash the bootloader. Almost all custom ROM's come without bootloader so you should be able to flash them via CWM,TWRP or mobile din.

How to go back to 4.3 from 4.4.2

How do you go back to 4.3 after taking the OTA and then rooting it? I dont want to brick my phone. I have the 4.3 stock rom from sammobile that i could flash using Odin but not sure if that will work?

Best practice is to flash custom recovery then a custom rom. If you try using odin or other methods then an issue may/can arise. If you only flash custom roms you will have no issues with bricking hard or soft.

I used Odin to do a complete restore back to 4.3. I like a fresh start, seems I have less issues that way. Worked great then I rooted with cf auto root, then back to smoothest rom 2/3 imo.
