I just got an epic this week from sprint, loving it so far NOW that I flashed it myself to Cricket. can someone recommend a rom that can be used as a daily driver for me? I know alot of people post this kind of question but this is what I'm looking for:
Speed
A little awsomesauce
Nice layout
No sprint bloatware
Overclocked Kernel preferably EB13 (Don't know if this has been done yet)
Bluetooth for music functioning along with voice (using a motorola roadster for my car)
Few if no force closes
sorry for asking this as I know alot of devs see this on a normal basis but I'm VERY new to samsung android, Evo's and Mytouch 4g's were my last phones so I've always been an HTC kind of guy. any help would be appreciated.
The new syndicate just dropped. Its amazing.

yeah, what he said ^
same here 100%
midNght v4.1 ... has all of what you're looking for.
It has all the standard apps as separate flashable zips. So you start off with a very bare ROM and build it up yourself.
It uses an overclocked kernel 1.2 when using setCPU
It is solid and speedy
its EB13 as well.
(no matter what rom you choose; you should start off by using odin and the eb13 tar that already has recovery and root in it; thread is in the dev area)
Good luck
Viper ROM
The Viper Trinity Rom is amazing
Viper rom frozen has been my favorite so far. Trinity is very hot, small glitch with corp email that keeps me from giving it a 10.

think I'm gonna give midnight a run first and then onto viper if it's not for me, thank you guys for your suggestions
Yeah, the new Syndicate Frozen ROM is great.
It installs overclocked to 1.2ghz, and even when I underclocked with SetCPU, I didn't notice any drop in snappiness at all.
MidnightROM is supposed to be pretty good as well, though I had some Force Close issues (that were probably my fault), so I switched to Syndicate for the time being.
Bonsai 3.0.1, you have to wait a little longer but i hear good things, in the mean time bonsai 3.0.0 is sweet. Fast,no bloat and backs up and restores your data for you. really good.
The new syndicate rom is just as amazing as their di18 release was. Plus! There is no carrier IQ running, which means speed improvements as well as the privacy issues are gone.
oh and one more feature I need now that my fiancee got his atrix last night, I need a working front facing camera, do all the roms mentioned have the FFC working?
And yes I'm very jealous of him having that damned new dual core phone lol.... that's why I text bombed him with a 1000 texts as soon as he got home with it where he lives MUAH HA HA HA HAAAAA!
Another one for Bonsai ROM. The easiest install I've ever done on any ROM and it's snappy and stable.
Just do what I do and try them all. then install the newest update for every one. Then just stick with your favorite. You also learn a lot in the process.

I give my vote for Midnight ROM v4.1
I had this problem as well until a friendly person here explained to me that you have to go back into Clockwork and flash everything extra you want. It comes with only the bare essentials.
Midnight ROM has more work involved but it is great.
it does have a working FFC as well. Someone actually just asked about it in the Midnight ROM thread and the developer was very helpful in answering the question.

Haha! I was thinking about how we are like pigeons- we go to whoever has the bread at the moment.
The best part about the community roms is if one rom finds a new fix it will trickle into the others. We are still in the early stages of eb13. I expect to see some amazing things from our devs in the next month.

This for epic win. thank you very much guys for your help in all this, and I was always a "man not another best rom thread" but now I asked it so have to be quiet. And I prefer to think of myself as a squirrel looking for his next nut when it comes to roms lol
I'm running Bonsai, and they just updated to eb13. I prefer it over viper and the others, it seems faster and has more battery. Also it backs up your data, and removes all bloatware.

I don't have any lag on my Evo at all, unless my phone doesn't like a particular kernel. When everything is dialed in, it runs smooth and quick, on sense or AOSP. I would tend to think that there is a reason you're getting lag. Can you be more specific? Does everything lag, or is it just certain apps? Have you tried wiping everything and reflashing whatever ROM you're using? Or at least just wiping cache and dalvik cache then trying out a different kernel?
Awhile ago I used to have a samsung galaxy s that I did a lag fix on and it really made fast faster. My phone its pretty fast I was just kinda wondering? I am using Koni Elite 2 and pretty impressed, but MikFroyo is my favorite rom so far. I'm pretty new to this..

Gotchya. I was just looking around a Samsung Fascinate forum the other day, prepping to root my buddies phone. I saw all sorts of strange talk of lag fix, voodoo kernels, Odin's, clockwork red, clockwork blue, clockwork green, D109's and DJ05's, haha. All sorts of stuff that I'm not used to seeing over here on the Evo forum. I felt like a total noob reading through it all at first. Anyways, there's no specific 'lag fix' that I'm aware of for the Evo. Like I said, differnt kernels can drastically affect the way the phone runs. another thing that can sometimes potentially make the phone laggy is the 1.90 pri. Some phones don't like that pri (mine included) and the 1.77 pri works much better. Others report the oppositte. But, basically, you're phone shouldn't really have any lag when everything is working properly, at least in my experience. So if you are getting any drastic lag, I'd try making some changes.
It's not my phone it's me..I'm running out of things to do, and always trying to make fast faster! I just want the page opened and ready before I even hit the button...
Lol...

If you really wasn't to see your phone fly, install CM 6.1.2 along with the 7.6 Snap Turbo kernel. There is a whole thread here to help you out. I get quadrant scores near 2600 with that setup. Only downside, no 4g.

Well, there's no perfect answer to this question. The best 2.3 ROM is the one that works best on your phone. Every ROM performs just a bit differently on each person's phone. Apps added and other changes made can also effect this. Our Epics can be like a second girlfriend...one minute giving you all kinds of love and happiness and the next minute can be a real pain in the ass...wait maybe I need a new girlfriend!

Yup, its all about trial and error. I can't tell you how many times I have tried a ROM and its worked perfect only for other users to report constant force closes. When you do find the ROMs that work perfect you will be a very happy camper. It pains me to run a stock setup now.

CM7.
jk. But I'd check out acs bamboozled...best gb rom I've used so far.
I've tried two (or three) 2.3 based roms and there has been a couple of things that have always caused me to go back to SRF 1.2:
No custom kernels = no overclock - I'm not a huge overclocking type of guy, but I always like to have it clocked at 1.12 or 1.2 ghz, just enough to keep it smooth but not high enough to run it hot or drain my battery.
No custom kernels = Cannot use Galaxy Tuner - I use Google Music as my primary source of car music, which means I needed to find an external app to use as an equalizer. Voodoo sound didn't work and Tuner froze on me every time I tried to use it.
Still Very buggy - I've run into a few bugs that have always irritated me, no matter how small they were. Whether it's something that freezes my phone or just kills the frame rate, I've just always been bugged (get it?) by bugs.
But where there is bad things, there have been a lot of good things that I absolutely loved about 2.3, almost enough to stay with it:
Live Backgrounds - For me, they've seem to have gotten better (stock ones anyways) and, as far as I could tell, they don't murder my battery or frame rate. The one I loved the most was this awesome looking clock that was a bunch of circles. It's hard to explain...
Screen off Animation - More eye candy, but awesome eye candy. Not much to say other then I love watching my phone turn off
Everything just seemed so smooth - Scrolling, opening apps up, etc, just seemed so fluid and clean, even if the frame rate was dropping for some reasons.
------
Those are some of my personal pro's and con's on deciding whether to run 2.3 at this time or not. For me, the con's on top were more important then the pro's on the bottom. Needs are different for each person so I'm sticking with 2.2 for now until either the official release of 2.3 is out or we can start adding kernels and themes (etc etc).

You know there can be no custom kernels until source code is released. But as for overclocking, many have had success with Tegrak from the market that has allowed overclocking on the GB leaked ROMS.

Yea, I'm slowly learning all that, I just didn't know at the time. As for Tegrak, I heard it's a major drain on the battery for some reason, but maybe results vary from user to user. Overclocking wasn't a huge concern for me, it was the other two on there that kind of got to me. I'm still happy with 2.2 so that's why I've decided to wait it out

hmm i never tried compkid's regeneration or inception roms. How are they?
as for the topic we are on now, i left acs1.2 the day eg22 came out and yeah al though for some things i would love to go back to acs1.2 but the scale is heavier for me on the gb side.
I used go green, team era's scrambled eggs and tried all the randomrom 2.3 versions (eagle, egret, osprey). The most stable rom for me is randomrom osprey. It is fast enough, great on battery and everything works well with it (other lauchers, apps, etc). As for scrambled eggs, man i loved how snappy that rom was. It was extremely quick upon the click but unfortunately it wasnt working that good with a few launcher and apps and way too many force closes but still fast. Even though i feel scrambled eggs was snappier than osprey, i did receive much higher quadrant scores with osprey (not that quadrant actally matters to me, just for the sake of seeing the scores).
GoGreen was meh for me and i am definitely anticipating an update for scrambled eggs..
I first went with Bamboozle, and it was good. Then one day there are 3 EG22 Roms here it seemed.
So I tried RandomRom and I was having an awful time after 2 days with FC's and reboots.
I then loaded Scrabmled Eggs yesterday and I have been clean (other than google Nav). I am checking battery life now, but I am doing better now than I was with RandomRom. I have to think I was doing something wrong with RandomRom cuz my battery life was terrible and the FC's. I did the same thing each time I installed them, but as said before, each phone is different.
Good luck!

I was running the scrambled eg22v4, just installed v7 this morning and so far it seems a little better. Only complaint is my battery seems to be going down a little faster, but it could be cuz I've been messing with loading stuff and resetting everything up. I'll give more feedback when I've had it a few days. ACS Go Green wasn't bad either.
Hey guys, a while back i had the epic 4g, and it was the best phone in the world to me. The motorola photon came out and all i saw was dual core! so i jumped off the samsung epic ship and boarded the motorola photon ship......BIG MISTAKE....there wasnt anything i couldnt do with the epic 4g. Between the devs, and learning how to really have some modding fun with the epic, there wasnt really much of a limit on it. Ive been arguing with sprint for 6 months to allow me to upgrade both my lines, and they finally agreed! Ive had so many problems with the motorola photon, and the dev. department can only do so much without an unlocked bootloader...anyway, Im phone shopping now, and i wanna come back to the samsung epic family. I really like the epic touch 4g. Can you please comment on your experience with the phone? Is 4g and GPS working stable on all the roms? Im so eager and excited...I want to wait for the galaxy nexus, but ive got to take advantage of this opportunity while i have the chance, and the galaxy nexus is slightly outa hands reach...I will await your thoughts.....
This phone is awesome I just came from a nexus s and I don't miss it at all! Especially with CM9 the GPS and 4G is awesome where I live!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
everything is working great for me and i also asked about the nexus and generally everyone agreed that it wont really offer much more then the e4gt. i think just a little bigger screen and more internal memory
It's ultimately that YMMV. I heard that the photons have better modems so they can get better signals compared to the epic 4g touch.
However, ROM development has really been kicking off. We have three main AOSP ROMS, CM 9, AOKP, and Codename Android, which are all about to be updated to Android 4.0.4 and able to record video again. All silky smooth. Make sure to not flash or wipe anything if you flash to ICS or you risk bricking.
As far as hardware, you should check if you have LTE where you live if you want to take advantage of it on the Galaxy Nexus.
Here's a thread asking a similar question
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1568211
In all honesty, this is the longest I've ever kept a phone and I've had it since it released in September. I love this phone and the devs (and contributors) here at XDA just give me new ways to enjoy my phone and make it work for me.
I'll be eyeing the new HTC and SGS3 (if it ever comes out) but it would take a lot to make me jump ship, and truly, that is saying a lot for me.
@darkfire2024, i must admit, some of my co-workers have the epic touch 4g and when they dont have any bars of service, i usually have full bars. Not that it helps to have full bars, i might beable to make a call, but i definitely dont have any 3g coverage...I live in chicago, im sure it will be months before they release lte over here. I checked that thread. Very useful, thanks for your advice.
I'd like to say this is by the best phone I've ever used. The great thing, as you pointed out, is the active devs here, they are incredible. I recently helped a co-worker with his newest Droid4; get it at least rooted anyways, and I felt even better about my phone. Great thing is you have SO many options to choose from - especially for connectivity! Maybe the EL29 modem works best on your phone and in your neighborhood. Maybe it's the FC07 or FC24 or even one of the EK versions. The point being you can find out! I've been lucky and had progressively better speeds for both 4G and 3G with each version (except one early FC; caused batter drain and got no 4G) Good luck.
Edit: forgot to add that if you do go flashing different modems, make sure to update the PRL and Profile after/between the updates! I keep coming back to the Blazer GB ROM - literally everything works and works great. I've got a couple FC24 builds I'll probably try this weekend. But we'll see. I'm sure the final offical ICS code will drop very soon; then we'll see some great crazy development.

My thoughts exactly. I have used the nexus in the verizon store and I must say the e4gt runs smoother. Samsung really hit the nail on the head with this phone it is perfect! No lag at all. Watch the video comparing the two by FlossyCarter on youtube you will see what I mean when I say the epic runs better. Like others have said this is the phone that I have owned the longest because with cell phones I am always getting sick of them after a couple weeks (Iphone) this phone has so much dev support and is just so awesome I can see myself holding on to it for another year easily!

Is the sad truth that our phones will never be as smooth as it was while running gingerbread?
is it just me or will our phones ever live up to the stability of GB? I have used every ROM since I bought this phone..and GB is the "pinnacle" of software for our phone.
Now this is my first Android phone but is this the case with other phones? I.e. the software shipped with the phone is the best suited version.

I'll have to politely disagree
I actually have have my phone feel more smooth on ICS and even more smoother on jelly bean.. I was on ginger bread stock for the longest time before I found out about xda and my experience has been way better since then... Sure, I agree that ICS and JB are way better than GB..much "sexier" to have. Matter fact, JB has sucked me back in to loving my phone. However, the argument is that no matter how hard the devs try, who do a damn good job, GB will be far and away the best OS for our phone. This includes stability, dependability and of course battery life, among other things :good:
Its not our phones fault sprint gave us a jacked ota :/
Gb wasn't always 'perfect' but ics, and eventually jb we'll most likely be just as pleasing as gb, If not more, with more features. Just give her time

I also agree that Ics does not match gb YET. But they are making progress fi03 has shown us hope of that. It looks a little smoother and showing major improvement I'm both battery and signal. So Sammy is listening and working to smooth out ics. Keep in mind that there is even a newer build that we don't have yet fi06 who knows whats fixed in that. And I am willing to bet we will get some more drops this month of they continue with this pattern . So let's try and stay optimistic Sammy definitely has the financial backing now to afford good support for there devices. And since the s2 is still selling very well Sammy is continuing support and with Motorola making such a public announcement about there jb support you know sammy is gonna compete with that. So even of ics doesn't become perfect they will probably get it right in jb. Either way a little patience and optimisim will go a long way the future looks bright for our phone.

I honestly never had an issue with ICS even with the past leaks besides the Wimax bug which is now fixed. Maybe phones have different effects to software. Idk but that emmc bug never affected me and I used the stock recovery to wipe more than once on several occasions lol..

You guys must not be doing clean installs with full wipes and just doing the ota update. I haven't had any issues with ICS or JB, but I always do a thorough wipe before flashing anything and I only use aosp based roms, like AOKP or PA. I'm not a fan of TWiz so I only run it long enough to do PrL and Profile updates  if you're having issues with ICS or JB I recommend doing a thorough wipe and then flash a rom and start fresh, left over data and incompatible apps can cause all kinds of issues. I think the only reason the carriers don't wipe data on OTAs is cuz its easier to listen to ppl ***** about the update sucking than it is to listen to em ***** the update erased all their games and apps . They should just force data wipe on OTA and use the Google sync function to restore most data after a clean install, but still people would complain they lost their texts and other assorted crap that if its honestly that important should be getting saved to their external SD cards anyways, cuz if the phone breaks you're gonna lose your sh!t atleast if its on the external SD you can salvage it

Yes I do every time. Try flashing back to el29 run it for a day or two then flash back to ics and tell me you don't see the difference. It's pretty night and day. I am willing most people that are satisfied with ics are either just happy that's it's a little but better than the ff18. **** we were given or aren't comparing it to el29 maybe cause they never ran it or it's been So long they forgot what it feels like. When you flash back to el29 coming from ics that actually feels like the upgrade. Especially on ph 4.1

Cm9 is a smoother experience to me at least. Also I'm getting even better battery life than on calks 3.0

Its not our phones fault sprint gave us a jacked ota :/
Gb wasn't always 'perfect' but ics, and eventually jb we'll most likely be just as pleasing as gb, If not more, with more features. Just give her time

This is my thought exactly. We had what, 3 or 4 official builds of GB before they got it right? And we are on number 2 for ICS.
And with that being said, I am not having any problems with ICS. The last two leaks are running great and I don't miss GB at all.
Everybody has there own experience and opinions, this is just mine.

I agree with the OP. GB was a much more stable experience. I've flashed dozens of roms both clean and keeping user data and while ICS/JB are definitely improvements to the OS feature-wise, they tend to fail at stability including bugs, battery life, reception, and performance. I've only found one ICS rom that has actually managed a better battery life than calk's EL29 GB and that's re-calked 1.9. As far as reception goes, I get 0-1 bar on ANY ICS/JB rom/kernel/modem combo I've tried here at work and I always get 1-3 bars on GB combos such as EL26 or EL29. Performance is much better on GB for the simple reason that there's less stuff and the improvements in OS efficiency are not enough to offset the increased resource usage of all those cool new features. I also have yet to find an ICS/JB rom that handles scrolling as well as GB... with 4.x when you scroll it's either manually by holding your finger and dragging slowly to pan down or it's superobnoxiously fast and you go from top to bottom but have a hard time scrolling to anywhere just shy of the top or bottom without manually panning to those points. On GB the scrolling is slower so on a long page it may take a while to get to the bottom but at least you can scroll to any point fairly easily once you get used to the scrolling speed. ICS/JB roms have bugs too... mostly minor little annoyances that aren't worth asking a dev to fix. App compatibility is another huge hit for 4.x roms as is the major wifi bug that every 4.x rom I've tried has had which causes the wifi to show as connected after a wakeup but you can't even access google.
Yes, there are certainly some features about ICS/JB which I really enjoy and this is why I keep flashing more roms in the hopes that maybe eventually I'll stumble across the perfect rom/kernel/modem combo to make my phone uber. Re-Calked 1.9 with Agat's 5.4 and FH23 has so far been a decent step in that direction but it's still not perfect as the wifi problem still exists and scrolling is still ICS scrolling but one of these days I'll find the perfect non-GB rom.
Well it seems some people arent understanding my post. Sure, cm9 is great. Ive been running pa cm10 for the past week cause its been so fun. But the best GB ROMs have given me the best experience even it wasn't as "fun"
Maybe idk how to flash properly or my phone sucks lol
