[q] if you love your samsung epic 4g touch...... - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hey guys, a while back i had the epic 4g, and it was the best phone in the world to me. The motorola photon came out and all i saw was dual core! so i jumped off the samsung epic ship and boarded the motorola photon ship......BIG MISTAKE....there wasnt anything i couldnt do with the epic 4g. Between the devs, and learning how to really have some modding fun with the epic, there wasnt really much of a limit on it. Ive been arguing with sprint for 6 months to allow me to upgrade both my lines, and they finally agreed! Ive had so many problems with the motorola photon, and the dev. department can only do so much without an unlocked bootloader...anyway, Im phone shopping now, and i wanna come back to the samsung epic family. I really like the epic touch 4g. Can you please comment on your experience with the phone? Is 4g and GPS working stable on all the roms? Im so eager and excited...I want to wait for the galaxy nexus, but ive got to take advantage of this opportunity while i have the chance, and the galaxy nexus is slightly outa hands reach...I will await your thoughts.....

This phone is awesome I just came from a nexus s and I don't miss it at all! Especially with CM9 the GPS and 4G is awesome where I live!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

everything is working great for me and i also asked about the nexus and generally everyone agreed that it wont really offer much more then the e4gt. i think just a little bigger screen and more internal memory

It's ultimately that YMMV. I heard that the photons have better modems so they can get better signals compared to the epic 4g touch.
However, ROM development has really been kicking off. We have three main AOSP ROMS, CM 9, AOKP, and Codename Android, which are all about to be updated to Android 4.0.4 and able to record video again. All silky smooth. Make sure to not flash or wipe anything if you flash to ICS or you risk bricking.
As far as hardware, you should check if you have LTE where you live if you want to take advantage of it on the Galaxy Nexus.
Here's a thread asking a similar question
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1568211

In all honesty, this is the longest I've ever kept a phone and I've had it since it released in September. I love this phone and the devs (and contributors) here at XDA just give me new ways to enjoy my phone and make it work for me.
I'll be eyeing the new HTC and SGS3 (if it ever comes out) but it would take a lot to make me jump ship, and truly, that is saying a lot for me.

@darkfire2024, i must admit, some of my co-workers have the epic touch 4g and when they dont have any bars of service, i usually have full bars. Not that it helps to have full bars, i might beable to make a call, but i definitely dont have any 3g coverage...I live in chicago, im sure it will be months before they release lte over here. I checked that thread. Very useful, thanks for your advice.

I'd like to say this is by the best phone I've ever used. The great thing, as you pointed out, is the active devs here, they are incredible. I recently helped a co-worker with his newest Droid4; get it at least rooted anyways, and I felt even better about my phone. Great thing is you have SO many options to choose from - especially for connectivity! Maybe the EL29 modem works best on your phone and in your neighborhood. Maybe it's the FC07 or FC24 or even one of the EK versions. The point being you can find out! I've been lucky and had progressively better speeds for both 4G and 3G with each version (except one early FC; caused batter drain and got no 4G) Good luck.
Edit: forgot to add that if you do go flashing different modems, make sure to update the PRL and Profile after/between the updates! I keep coming back to the Blazer GB ROM - literally everything works and works great. I've got a couple FC24 builds I'll probably try this weekend. But we'll see. I'm sure the final offical ICS code will drop very soon; then we'll see some great crazy development.

Excellent phone. GB ROMs are perfect. ICS are good, but they do still have some issues.

The ICS issues are known and most have work arounds, but some of us are lucky and don't experience them. I think ICS is great, but I don't have any of the issues. Look at first few posts for known issues: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1512419

My thoughts exactly. I have used the nexus in the verizon store and I must say the e4gt runs smoother. Samsung really hit the nail on the head with this phone it is perfect! No lag at all. Watch the video comparing the two by FlossyCarter on youtube you will see what I mean when I say the epic runs better. Like others have said this is the phone that I have owned the longest because with cell phones I am always getting sick of them after a couple weeks (Iphone) this phone has so much dev support and is just so awesome I can see myself holding on to it for another year easily!

This phone is the best I've ever had the pleasure to own and I've owned a lot (see my signature)

right! plus ICS is making it super raw lol. everytime i pick this joint up to use it im still in awe like the first day I got it. Im amazed by how powerful and advanced this thing is. Im totally satisfied with it. Never had a phone this long either, and unless the note comes to sprint, I wont be ditching it anytime soon. Not even for the GNEX which IMO is a downgrade.

the best I always fight w m friend on whos better is iPhone or my epic 4g touch

Et4g + AOSP ICS > gNex ;-)

If I were you I would wait about 2 weeks man! Rumor has it the Galaxy Nexus might be released on sprint April 15. Besides that phone I would just wait for the Galaxy S3 which should be out in the next 6-8 months!

I switch phones quite a bit as well but to be honest with you this phone is the best I've ever owned, and with so much dev support you never get tired of it.

Coming from the HTC Evo 3D I can say this phone blows it out the water. Love my Epic Touch

Who upgraded from G2x?

This might be annoying, but who came from a LG G2x? The reason I got this phone is because my G2x fell in the toilet, which I wasn't even using. I loved the build quality of the G2x but it had some glaring issues. CM7 and great development (a couple devs are now here) made it a better phone than LG. But the speakerphone, APN (OMG 0_o) issues, and low quality screen have me admiring my SGSII for the great device it is. Had great memories with the G2x, but this will be my favorite phone for a long time.

I absolutely agree but
.. I absolutely love this phone gaming on the g2x was soo much better I had a decent screen with minimal bleed and no reboots but this phone got me cause of the screen type and size there are pros and cons for both but all in all I think I made the right choice this phone has promise and every Dev in the world it seems like while the g2x forums were starting to get thin
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
I think the G2x had a bad reputation from all the reboots and bugs even after the 2.3 update.
I still have my g2x and its still a beasr! Its faster and smoother than the gs2 right now (hopefully that changes soon) but the 4 inch screen just got too small. Never really ever had a reboot or any issue with it. Only beef also aside from the screen was that it didnt have a strong developer following.

I came from the G2X. I never had the reboot issue, but it seems like I had every other issue known to man kind. So after 7...yes, you read that right 7...replacement devices, they allowed me to just upgrade. So I did to the Galaxy SII.
Only thing I miss is the LG camera we finally got in the dev section.

+1 on the screen size .. lol... I picked it up and turned it on the other day before I shipped it to the buyer and wow that thing felt tiny in my hand I got used to this phone really fast now when I look down at this phone it seems normal

G2X who? Haha, yeah I came from the G2X and although Weapon G2X had it running great I don't miss it at all.
Hercules Hercules!!
I had the G2x running CM7 and never had any reboot or screen bleed issues. I bought the Galaxy S2 because I was a loyal Nexus S user before the G2x. I am not into gaming and I mainly use the phone for my GMail and Calender functions.
The Galaxy S2 has been great so far, I wish they would have made the screen with more DPI, but I have gotten use to the large screen which is nice when you are reading emails with attachments.
As far as the G2x is concerned, it was a nice phone but the Galaxy S2 is here to stay and so far the new development has been impressive. I am running the juggernaut V 2 ROM and so far it's been very smooth and no issues.
I still have it, i thought it was a good phone mine was good to me, and actually the ips display was nice. Still one of the fastest phones

I still have mine and I use it from time to time to play music. I dont miss it. Screen size is everything.
I did and I'm not looking back. The GS2 runs circles around my G2x. No matter what ROM I used it was laggy and would shut off randomly etc. If i shut it off and then plugged it into the charger, it would turn itself back on. I just got tired of it.
The screen was great and it was a nice looking phone, but for me, that was all.
The one thing I miss is CyanogenMod, but with Kondik at Samsung it shouldn't take too long. Currently loving all of the GSII community and support.

Another former G2X owner checking in! The only thing i actually miss about using my G2X is the ability to fry eggs with it...damn phone was always so damn hot! Lol.
I actually still have my G2X. I kinda only use it to show off Quadrant scores to my friends/co-workers...
I, too came from the g2x. I really liked the phone when it worked, but I had just about every problem in the book - reboots, shutdowns, no data, screen bleeding, serious (at times) lag, etc. Complained enough to get an early early upgrade. Very happy with the SGS2 - it's nice to have a phone that just works (at least for me). The RAM boost is great, too. I thought a 4" screen was perfect when I was on the g2x, but now I don't know how I could go any smaller than 4.3. Plus the colors on the SGS2 just blow the g2x out of the water. Only thing the g2x has on it is pixel density. SGS2 also has much better battery life, and of course, faster data speeds if they are available in your area. I would highly recommend moving on to the sgs2.

[Q]How is this phone?

So I'm getting a new phone. Right now I have a Cliq 2, but I'm getting a new one in the next week.
Right now I'm trying to decide between this, the G2x, or the MT4GS.
I'm not trying to get you guys to tell me why I should get this phone over the others, I'd just like to know what this phone is like. What are the ups? The downs? How's the phones radio? Custom ROMs? Battery life? And anything else you feel might be good to know before I make a decision.
Thanks!
Sent from my MB611 using Tapatalk
I like the screen size, battery is good for me, gets me through my 14hr day on one charge with the screen use between 3:30-4 hrs. The radio is great, i get good speeds and great audio quality on the phone. The ROM choices aren't great YET, but Juggernaut is perfect for me and as stable as can be with many features and tweaks.
some phones have the screen flaws, but its hardly noticeable unless you look for it. I would definitely recommend over the G2X, my previous phone, which I did not like. The MT4G slide my lady has and its a nice QWERTY phone, but the screen is too small for my liking. Also I find the battery better on this than my G2X fyi. You won't be upset with this phone, of that I am sure.
There is enough hate in the world. Why can't we all get along here ...?
Just came from g2 with desire z hboot and rcmix3d 4.0...
Love the phone. Development is slow for phone. But phone is decent. Screen has bugs but overall nice phone great preformance with beastmod 2 4.0_
Large Screen, Fast, Great Battery
best phone i have ever owned!!! hands down, buy it now
Yea i had the g2x good phone but the gs2 blows it out of the water with everything.....mt4gs isnt in this category really as it is just a laggy beast (my 8yr old had one) anyways the screen is beautiful, call quality is awesome, rom development is getting there hopefully miui soon and we have cm. Audio quality=loudest phone i ever owned
this phone is exceptional in every way except development. our development page is death
Just buy it.

Some of you are saying the dev here are slow which I agree to. But have you guys gone over to some of the other phones' dev threads? Look at the Amaze...LOL
I'm just curious do you people know how long it takes to compile and check roms for bugs? I don' think so. Making sure the code is correct if you changed anything. If their is one wrong line of code it code affect all the performance in a rom or kernel which could take minutes to hours to fix.. There will be no aosp roms until the cm team does it unless someone wants to do all the work themselves. Which by the way we have official support from the cm team. There are tons of developers outside which probably have tons of roms and kernels which are never released to the public because they don't want their work to be stolen or they simply don't want to share their work.
Doing things from scratch is a lot harder than porting. All the other galaxy s2 devices have mainly ports since they are nearly identical. The ports came from the official galaxy s2 which those people had to do things from scratch. Making roms is extremely time consuming these developers have other devices they work on, jobs , and family. They are not getting paid for their services to deliver roms. Just for you to flash and then complain about bad battery life. Which is most of the time the users fault. I think we should be more Appreciative that we actually have developers willing to share their work with us.
I like this phone. It makes phone calls and allows me to send texts.
I bet you'll enjoy it as well.

MT4GS: just no. The advantage of the g2x is OOB stock, and full cm support, plus wifi calling. It's a really awesome phone, and I would recommend it. GS2 is a really awesome phone but doesn't have full cm support yet.
TL;DR
MT4GS do not buy
G2X buy on a budget, or with no plans of rooting/romming
GS2 buy for the f***ing big screen, or the processor.

Alright. Why do you say not to buy the g2x though if I have no plans of rooting or romming? From what I've seen on its forums, it has tons of rom's and a few kernals.
And from what everyone has said this phone will soon have tons of rom's, though nobody knows for real if that's true or not

Best phone out, hardware wise. The only one that beats it is the Nexus. At least until CM9 comes out that is. Seems like you're on Sprint anyway, so you get the Nexus. There isnt a better Sprint phone out right now, by a mile.
Came from the original epic and love this phone. Never really used the physical keyboard on the OG Epic though, for some that's a deal breaker. Otherwise this phone is awesome.

I have both and only when I started using my Epic did I realize how freakin fast the Epic Touch is. Scrolling through very long list shows a clear difference between the two. Epic is great IMO, one of my favorite devices from the last couple of years, but the Epic Touch is just plain sick. The lack of a keyboard is a frightening thought that is diminishing slowly on a daily basis. Battery life is better, screen size is very get used to... I say go for it UNLESS you're saving your upgrade for LTE goodness, which is way into the future.
I picked up an Evo 3D today too, and man is this thing laggy in comparison the the Galaxy S2 phones. Hopefully I can find someone to trade for a Nexus 4G so I can do the ICS thing for a bit.
Also, once you go AMOLED, you never go to fake black. Or something to that effect.
Bought the OG Epic at Launch and the Touch at Launch. I never used the physical keyboard on the OG Epic. I absolutely love the Touch and don't regret my decision at all. It is by far the best phone I have ever owned. I would never go back to the OG Epic.
I concur OG Epic to the Touch. Great upgrade and we have a few ppl from that dev community too so it was a pretty smooth transition root/custom rom-wise for me.
You'll get used to not having a keyboard, after that your never go back to one.
Get this phone, its fantastic.
I had the original Epic, and I was one of those people who seldom used the keyboard, so the move wasn't that difficult for me. Plus I had the Nexus for about a month since Sprint replaced my Epic with one because I kept having problems, and this phone is leagues ahead of both phones!
Its a great phone. I rooted my Epic 4G with ACS Frozen Rom and that made the phone work great.
With the Epic Touch out of the box its even better. I have not rooted because i am so happy with at Stock.
I have both. I bought the E4gt 2 months ago and the hardware is amazing. BUT I still carry my OG epic as my daily phone. I really do miss the physical keyboard and I have yet to get my battery to out last my og epic equally app configured. The OG epic has been tweaked to the point that I'm getting good life. That being said, I have been tweaking the E4GT with some of the latest Roms/kernels so that I have gotten REALLY good standbytime and am slowly adding in my apps and seeing what has caused the powere issue. Originally my E4gt was setup the same as my OG epic so I know that some apps dont play the same on the E4gt. I get wake locks on a couple apps as well that I do not see on the OG epic. Now that being said, I will at some point switch to the E4gt as my daily driver and I hope to soon. The hardware is great and the experience is great.. but I have had a hard time turining off the OG epic as it just works!
-saridnour
I came from the OG Epic, its an amazing phone. I recently dropped it and cracked my screen bad and had a loaner phone for like 4 days... was going from withdrawls cuz I missed my Epic touch so much lol. Its a worthwhile buy.
I had the og epic... I would say get this phone as long as you don't use the keyboard much... it really is an amazing phone, even on a stock rom

This phone is fantastic. I'm a gamer, music lover, texter, (pretty much everything that this phone does). And it hasn't failed on me once. Some people say GPS has issues, but I've never experienced them, on any ROM. I think it's location dependent. Anyways...I'd hands down recommend this phone and Sammobile (aka Samfirmware) is leaking builds about twice a month, so an ICS leak will probably arrive maybe early Q1 to mid Q2. The hardware is definitely the best in the US right now (I'm talking about camera, CPU, GPU). Something I thought I wouldn't like prior to my purchase was the size of the screen being a bit large, but I bought it regardless and now it's my favorite feature.

[Q/Advice) upgrade from Evo 4g

Has anyone currently on the Galaxy S II previsouly came from using the Evo 4g? I am thinking about updating to this one, I have my upgrade but im pretty happy with the evo 4g and the development its recieved the past years..
But I wanted to get input if someone has switched from my phone to this and the pro's and con's..
I'd appreciate any input!
I came from the EVO 4G to the EVO 3D to the galaxy SII. Honestly I would go with the EVO 3D. I gave mine to my wife and think I will switch my phone back with her. Sense is just so far superior an interface it is enough to make me hate using my galaxy SII. If I could get sense on this phone it would be awesome.
Thanks for the reply, Sense is good, uses a lot of battery life. What launcher is most comonly used for galaxy s2??
I came from the EVO 4G and I have to say I love this phone. I thought I was a sense fiend but once I go this phone I like not having it. It just seems snappier without it. And once we get a full ICS rom I won't miss sense at all.

You mean what launcher does it come with or what launcher do we prefer to install from the market? Touchwiz is a lot less intrusive than sense and i prefer ADW launcher but all other ones are great options. I still use my evo 3d since it has great development but this device is far more superior than both the evo/evo 3d that it really isn't a bad choice.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
If you like the big screen of the EVO 4g, then you'll love the screen of the ET4g. I had the evo3d, it seemed really small the radio is very weak. It was the only phone that has had no signal in side my house. I felt the build quality was sub par also with the evo3d also. Just my opinion.
Here is my 2 cents.
Pros...e4gt brighter screen, smoother operation (no lag), much easier I think to root and customize. Better battery life and much more pros I know I'm missing
Con...radio....the radio signal sucks compared to evo. If you are in an area that your evo gets 2 bars your lucky on the Samsung to get one or have signal at all....could be different for you in your area.
This has been a few of the items I have noticed about the 2 phones.

I came from the Evo 4G and this phone by far out does the Evo. Speed...graphics power...screen...1080p video is 100% better..battery life too. It would be nice to be able to switch between Touchwiz and Android Gingerbread Stock layouf...but otherwise...its a no brianer.

I could not disagree with this post more.
I too came from a long history of HTC devices (most recently the Evo4G), and thought I would miss Sense. Nope. Not one bit. And I wouldn't touch an Evo3D with someone elses 10 ft pole.
Like mentioned in previous posts: Screen, batt life, CPU/GPU, camera!, massive amounts of internal storage, and yes, even touchwiz, make this a Far Superior phone.
And dev support is really picking up, new roms all the time.
do it.

I might be in this forum soon too. Over the past couple of days my Evo's charging port has been totally screwed up and my battery went from charging perfectly well to not charging at all. Can't even boot it up now to unroot it so I figured I might use the upgrade subsidy I've been sitting on since June. I had really planned to wait for the Nexus or SGS3 this summer/fall but I may just say "screw it" and upgrade today. Then when fall rolls around and there is some new badass handset I want, I can decide if I want to sell the SGS2 and put the proceeds toward the new one.
Traded my evo after my original gave up the ghost charging.
Now with e4gt. Love it!
Only annoyences is that i cant take pics while talking on the phone and i cant play music while on the Phone either.

FYI - I am on UnNamed and I can take pics and be on the phone. Quite simple as others have pointed out, this phone is clearly an upgrade from the Evo. I have them both and like others I thought it could not get any better than my Evo and I have been proven wrong. Also I just got the SGII for 48.88 at Sams club....
Ya i too came from an evo and let me tell ya this phone is soo much better in every way!! The evo's screen was horrible it was kinda laggy and battery life was just rediculous! This phone has an amazing screen you can crank the brightness all the way up and the battery is still gonna last you all day! This phone is a major win!! I have never had this phone lag out on me once and i have had it for months now. Even with all the apps open!

I had EVO 4G (which was great) but must say Epic is awesome. Compare to Epic - EVO feels like a brick now.

Any E4gT'ers have the Galaxy Nexus as well?

I was looking at the other forum, but didn't see that much. So thought I'd ask here. What do you think? I'm thinking of possibly switching, but not 100% sure. It all depends on the price. My epic 4g touch is amazing, minus my gps. It's decent in my Pittsburgh outdoors, but not amazing. In NYC/SF/Chicago, it's really bad for some reason.
But anyways, just wondering what ya'll think! I wanted a perspective from this forum, since I know most here love their GSII's!

I have a June 1 upgrade and I may get it. I feel your pain on the NYC part. My phone just doesn't like low signal areas. In NYC I can go one block and have 10Mbps 4g and go another and have 1 bar of 3g. When I am about to lose 3g I get random vibrations and menu pop ups. That being said, my NS4G will be the phone to go wifi only. I don't think I would sell my ET4G to get a GNex. I probably would sell it if the S3 is off of the charts amazing but fortunately I am not in the position to have to make that decision. I will be rocking my Epic Touch for a while. Development is going to take off once we have the official ICS build and kernel source. The best days are still ahead of this phone

I just came from ET4g. The biggest difference in my opinion is the screen quality. ET4G has a superior screen but you get used to it. Processing power is still the same. Also what I like about nexus coming from root is you'll always have a recovery when switching roms especially cyanogenmod 9. It's a pain in ET4g. The only reason I got this is the LTE feature. The screen size had no influence imo.

Agreed, and I'm not just saying that because my upgrade is in like 1 and a half years! I feel like the Gnex and the E4GT aren't that difference, so IMO there's no need to update. I really don't see much difference in what the Nexus offers that our phones don't. Maybe I'll wait till the S3 to see if I want to trade in my phone or sell it.
Im still debating over the GN or the EVO One.
Good:
1.Flashing ROMs is way easier like a previous user mentioned because you always have a recovery.
2. The camera takes beautiful pictures, and fast! Also I should mention it saves the orientation of the picture, unlike the epic touch... -__-
3. Better android update support.
4. LTE support.
Bad:
1. Speaker wasn't as loud.
2. The phone seemed to get very hot for no apparently reason on custom ROMs and stock with different kernels within mins if usage.
3. On screen buttons are annoying, at least for me.
4. Phone struggled to get signal more than my e4GT.
5. By time LTE is rolled out in most common areas there will be a better LTE device or a new nexus.
6. Hardware isn't any better than ours.
7. Battery life wasn't good for my needs compared to the E4GT (With LTE disable).
The reasons above were my personal testings. Yours may be different.
^ Exactly what I would've said. I'm coming back to the e4gt this week. The nexus also has a purple tint to it at a dark setting. (Very noticeable on the pull down bar.)

Uhhh, the camera from the GN is wayyyyy inferior to the E4GT. Everyone knows that. It is faster though, but the quality blows compared to the latest phones. That to me was enough to pass on it until the GS3.

Well duh, that is why I mentioned it as a good thing. the camera on the E4GT is good enough for my usage just I hate having to hold my phone sideways to take pictures correctly.
I've got both
The GPS being functional is amazing on the Nexus, the screen looks nicer on the Nexus (imo)
But the Epic Touch feels smoother and is a bit more of a robust phone I think. Plus I know it better
To me the nexus is about the same as epic touch, but nexus gets me better a signal in lower signal areas.. Screen has higher resolution and that is only thing I missed from 3d ...I wont get evo lte , no way I give htc any money after the debacle that was the 3d . I hate sense so will not run it , if galaxy 3 doesn't wow then I will wait for next nexus....but galaxy 3 will be great so I will probably get that ...we should know something on thursday...

I got a couple of updates on my account and thought about getting the GNex but then I said my part of the world is not getting LTE anytime soon. If I want to pull my hair out now with Sprints 3g I may want to kill myself it that's my only choice for another year..... Now that and that alone would be my reason to just wait it out...

This has been my one and only gripe about my Epic Touch is low signal areas. My phone is almost unusable inside my office but everywhere else its fantastic. If you are saying that is OK then its still in the running for me.
Question, is all of the ET4G source code going to be available once OTA rolls out (or soon after) or do they only release bits and pieces? Also, will it be the same for S3? I assume that since it comes with ICS the kernel source should be there but what about the rest of it? Thanks
anyone see the other 1.2 million threads about the same thing? lol

Meh, what else are we going to talk about? More speculation about the S3 specs or when the next leak will be...lol? I am kinda curious to read what people that actually made the change think of the phone
