Quickest, safest way to root? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I'm seeing a lot of different threads regarding root pop up. I just want to know what's the easiest way to do it, while maintaining everything stock. Don't want clockwork or anything to interfere with OTA.
Also, is anyone having any weird issues after rooting? I want to keep this phone as close to the way Google intended as possible. In the past, I use to flash roms about once a day. Want to give that for stability.

Do you think we'll see Unrevoked for Froyo

As the subject says. I took the plunge and updated to Froyo today and I can't help but wonder if it will ever get rooted via Unrevoked. I don't have any regrets but I'm going to miss my root only apps. Phone is definitely alot quicker now and the update corrected a bunch of small problems that I was having.

We def.ly will, got all the confidence in the Android devs, only a matter of time.

I hope so. I miss my root privs. I never got into the custom rom scene but I would love to see my 2.2 rooted.

Would you settle for a manual root method? Or do you need the fool-proof clicky style?
I would agree, unrevoked is cool for being easy, but unless it does full nand, i wouldnt bother.
Why didn't you just install a rooted version of Froyo?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
a lot of the people that arent very deep intot hings seem to make this mistake thinking they need to do the OTA to get FROYO.
I am not up on unrevoked but will it let you flash rooted roms now? i know for a while they said you couldn't for many.
I also think many dont know the diffrence between root and nand unlocked. Always have to remember not everyone one is on the same level of knowlege.
I personally don't like Unrevoked. Sure you get superuser and that is neat and all. But, the only app I found that worked using unrevoked was wifi tether. I couldn't delete any of the standard bloatware and frankly that is all I want. A clean copy of the Sense UI.
Next time I am going to do it manually or use something that does a full unlock.
I was fully aware of what I was doing when I installed the ota update for froyo. I know I had choices at the time in terms of other roms but I never really invested the time to read and follow all of the dev threads and just wanted a fully functional Froyo install. Since I hadn't really gotten into the full nand unlock scene I knew that I probably wouldn't do so in the future so I decided to be brave and go with the ota Froyo and give up root for now.
If there's a manual way to get basic root without full nand unlock manually I would try that in a heart beat. Like I said, I was never really a custom rom guy so having a fully unlocked phone isn't important to me as I don't have that much time to invest reading the forum threads that have thousands of pages.

Rooting and Hiccups

So after rooting my device, it feels noticeably slower.
Browser, applications, home screen, all feel slower to me than when it was completely stock.
All I've done is install SU, Rom manager and Titanium backup.
Just curious if anyone else has noticed this at all.
Got a feeling I am going to revert back to stock.
With 4.0, I don't really feel that root accomplishes that much anymore besides backups and new Roms.
Anybody else see this?
rooting allows more access. Performance should not hindered if only root is attained. The root of the problem probably lies elsewhere.

I completely understand what root accomplishes.

Cons of flashing custom roms?

What are the cons for flashing a custom rom?
For an example:
Does it mess with your phone if you flash a lot?
Those sort of questions!
ALSO, on my last phone, the HTC amaze, I used flash custom roms and over time it would just have an issue after issue. It kept rebooting randomly and it was just crazy.
Because of that problem, I actually moved to this phone! I'm afraid that the same problem will occur if I flash custom roms again... This phone was expensive compared to my previous phone and plus my mom would kill me if it starts having problems.
OR
Is it possible for me to stay with the stock rom and just install most of the mods from custom roms? If I could find them, but that'll be time consuming and I might mess up since I know nothing of developing and mods, just flashing
THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Everything is a CON if you don't have root access. LOL
You will not be able to flash hardly any mods, themes or any other really
useful apps not even rom manager or titanium backup without root access.
Both of which are now a very basic app since they have become so useful.
Without ROOT your phone will be LOCKED and crippled into only being able
to use and install those apps at the playstore which do not require root.
99.9% of any mods, themes or anything else found in these custom roms will
not be possible to use, install or flash without having root access.
There is only one reason I can think of why some people don't want to root their phones and that is they are simply
satisfied with their phones and don't want to change anything in it, but those people don't really belong here in XDA.
Believe it or not but XDA was intended for those people who like to have endless possibilities, features, functions and
modifications so they can enjoy their phones to the fullest extent rather than simply having a $650 crippled stock phone.

Make a nandroid backup of whatever rom ur using presently. If you don't like a certain rom you flashed, just restore ur backup.

I usually do dalvik, data, system, cache before and after I do dalvik and cache before I reboot. I'm still new to this ****, but from what I've read, I believe I'm correct.

if want to use custom roms and install the mods, you have to have root access. if it's a warranty issue, even if you flash a custom rom without having root access, that's still voiding your warranty because i changes the samsung official to custom in download mode. so, you have to chose one side. no root, no mods, no custom roms, but having a warranty if something goes wrong, or root, mods, custom roms, but no warranty. you can always revert back to full stock without root for warranty issues, but it's not that easy if you aren't that familiar with phones and rooting. before triangle away, what i would do to go to full stock without root for warranty issues, was that i went to samsung kies. and i clicked on emergency firmware recovery, and i put my model number of phone (SGH-M919) then, my serial number of the phone, and then, i plugged the phone in, and booted into recovery, and i went back to full stock and could return it.
The only cons I've found so far is finding which ROM I want to use as a daily driver...

full wipe if you're flashing roms, you dont have to if you restore. it does it for you, and i've done restores without wiping anything without any immediate or long term hiccups
Only real cons of custom Roms is that in some circumstances there may be a couple things that aren't quite as stable as being stock would be, but a lot of those issues are taken care of if you do a full wipe before flashing a new rom. Just follow the OP instructions, and you're usually good to go. I've used Wicked V3 and Darthstalker S4 V3 with no issues at all. Just read through the threads, and you'll be able to get somewhat of a consensus on what is and isn't working properly in a Rom.
The biggest con of rooting and flashing custom roms is that everyone will see how super awesome your phone is and want to be just like you. People will form fan clubs to celebrate your greatness. Women will throw themselves at you becase rooted phones scream "Alpha male". You will have to do occasional autograph appearances and ribbon cutting ceremonies for various business and park openings as a result.
After a while all the added responcibility and living in the public spotlight might start to wear you down. That's the biggest con.
But due to your increased popularity you will get more phone calls and text messages. And every time you answer one you will do it on your rooted phone and you will be reminded of how much cooler you are than everyone else because of the nifty mod you flashed earlier that day:good:, and you will remember that it's all worth it.
Also you get to change the color of the clock and stuff. So that's super cool. :good:

Holy crap, I need whatever app it is that YOU use.

Is it worth it to root still?

I just got this phone, after having an SII for a while, the SII I rooted and put about every rom made, lol I had fun, but to be honest, many roms were missing features.
I'd like to Root, to be able to remove a lot of bloat that came with this phone, including "look out"
The main reason I want to root though, is to be able to tether my unlimited data plan.
Other features like titanium back up and some other rooted only apps.
I don't want to put a rom on it, I'm happy with the stock rom, but what about when updates come? like 4.3 or something, I wouldn't be able to update it right?

depends on your carrier and what they throw in the updates. safe way is to stick with what you got till the next release is known to be rooted.
whether running a custom rom or just rooted, you should be able to unroot and revert to stock by following the guides on here, and then you can update with OTA. otherwise, it probably wouldnt be too long of a wait for roms based on any new updates to come out.
I couldn't have this phone or any phone for that matter without root anymore. The touchwiz roms made by the devs here are soooo much smoother than the stock touchwiz on the phone. The better battery life and customization are always an upside as well.

Is root really worth it??

Hey everyone I just bought my 8.0 tab woohoo!! I'm just wondering if it's really worth it to root the tablet? What (is)are the best benift(s) for the tablet?
Sent from my GT-N5110 using xda app-developers app
There are many different reasons as to why people like to root. Here are a few examples:
1) Some want total control of their Android Device whether it be a phone or table.
2) Some want certain apps that will only work with Root Permissions.
3) Some want to install a ROM for either its features, customization, or just cause it looks cool.
4) Some want to flash multiple ROMs cause they just like messing with their device. These people are also known as "Flashaholics". Terrible sickness to get...
Those are the main ones I can think of, i'm sure there are more reasons, but these are mainly my reasons.
As for if it's worth it? That's up to the user. I will forever Root any Android Device I acquire. Some devices I will add a Custom ROM or some I will just leave Stock Rooted. Example, I put Custom ROMs on my SGH-i777 (SGS2), but I leave my Note 8.0 Stock Rooted. I don't want to lose all the features of the S-Pen, I specifically bought this tablet for that reason.
Now if it was any other tablet that didn't have great stock features, I probably would've put a Custom ROM, or just bought a Nexus 7.
Worth it? Maybe. But what do you have to lose? You can root and not utilize the extra functionality, and still receive OTA updates.
I rooted because there is a plethora of functionality in apps and programs I can use and I don't have to swallow verizon updates that they force on my phone due to my roms I installed. Great benefits by rooting. It's your phone, root it when you need it! Lol

If you do decide to root, i highly recomend multi window manager its on the playstore and allows you to add ANY apps you like to multiwindow you can play a game and watch a movie at the same time, or have ebay open while on whatsapp it lets you choose what to put in the note 8s multiwindow and works very well.
Enjoy
