Just wanted you guys feelings on how this feature is doing in your nexus life. I actually use it as a security feature and it hasn't let me down and I don't think it will. I'd like to hear your thoughts. That's one up on the iphone.
Transmitted from The LTE Starship... GNEX!!!!
Less secure than PIN or pattern unlock as the 'PIN' in the case of Face Unlock is literally written all over your face.
Note that the argument is actually more complicated than this because it depends on what threat you're actually trying to secure your phone from.
the one are i think this is the most useful is when i'm driving and i have to unlock. tell me that isn't convenient.
I tried it for two days, but I became tired of looking like a real winner in public unlocking my phone, as well as it didn't catch my face all the time. (about 66% of the time) I do agree however that it is more than a gimmick.

It would be great if the preview image from face unlock could be disabled. I know I'm handsome and all, but I don't want to look at my mug 63 times a day.
I tried it at the verizon store and it seemed pretty legit. Does anybody know if this is a galnex only feature or will it come to all ics devices with a front facing camera?
Well,count me as loving it.
It's very fast. Works about 90% of the time if you do half a dozen shots under different conditions with the improve matching feature.

I think it's just like any other security lock on smartphones. PIN, pattern, and face unlock, they are all the same imho. If I got the phone in my hand, I'll be able to see what you have no matter what. Doesn't matter what kind of security feature you have.
i was surprised that it worked with my glasses on and off. i initially set it up, but i cant be bothered setting up a secure lock screen, since i like quick camera access which cant be had with a PIN or face unlock
using it on mine, however the one interesting thing is, I was showing off on launch day. And handed my phone to my mom and said unlock it. She turned it on and it recognized her faster than me. As posted previously, use the improve feature in settings

I'm actually constantly surprised by how well the face unlock works! And if for whatever reason you want to bypass it quickly, you can just tap at the bottom of the screen to go immediately to whatever your backup method is!
I tried a couple facebook pictures of myself and those didn't unlock, and I also haven't tried to see if it might recognize my brother as me but honestly, if someone really wanted to get into your phone, they would regardless of what kind of "security" you use. In my opinion, the face unlock is quick, functional and cool. What's not to like?

Yeah, and Face Unlock on all the custom ICS builds was absolutely horrible. Worked maybe 1/10 times after setting it up in perfect lighting.

It's in 4.0.2, you won't find it in 4.0.1
It takes too long for my liking.
I find it stupid that my Nexus won't let me use face recognotion if I setup a VPN, it forces you to choose between a pin/pattern/password. So now if I want to use face unlock I have to create then delete my VPN connection everytime.

I have decided that I can not deal with the locked bootloader on this tablet and have chosen to sell it (got more then I paid). The A100 is a wonderful tablet and has great potential but the lack of developers and dead end bootloader is a showstopper.
I am waiting for another brand 7 inch tablet to arrive by Fedex later this week. It has the same basic specs as the a100. CWM is already available and there is a small amount development going on. But it is new on the market. No ICS yet. There is some talk in getting CM9 on it.
It is really disappointing that the 10 inch tabs are getting all of the glory, I really think the 7 inch is the best size for carrying with you.
see yah!
The locked bootloader isn't a big deal for me because the tab already does everything I want it to do. The only thing that could make this tab already better than what it is would be the unlocked bootloader that way we could look at different rom options (but to be honest the rom that's currently there isn't that bad at all). Granted it would be nice to overclock, but its already pretty fast and I haven't really had any hiccups while using it since I released the custom build.prop (except for using hdmi which I'm working on).
I think eventually we'll get some sort of work around for the bootloader working, its just a matter of time. I'm definitely not going to drop this tab though just because we don't have it figured out yet.
I do wish there was someone other than myself that's taken an interest in this tab that knows their way around custom recoverys and bootloaders since that's not one of my strong points but at least I'm trying to help.
I wont call you a sell out, but I will wish you good luck with your new device and happy modding!

I think its a simple way of letting their frustrations go. I was just doing some research on this tab as I'd like to have a nice little 7 inch carry along but not so sure about it with the locked b/l and bad viewing angles.
Is the screen as bad as it looks in videos? From what I've seen and read this thing runs very smooth and lagfree, am I right about that?
Thanks for any info.

Theres really only 1 bad angle which is about 120 degrees towards the bottom. It gets darker. So jus flip it 180 in landscape and youre good. Left, right and top angle are great IMO. As far as speed. Here's one I posted....you be the judge....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-99O4-gmQ6E&list=UUHqepxR6_suYYKySqKxymDg&index=3&feature=plcp
The only lag I've ever experienced was when I was on the early 3.2 builds. After upgrading to the latest 3.2.1and running the custom build.prop, the only bit of lag I've seen is playing 720p video in flash and 720p software mode video on hdmi out. But my atrix had the same issue, so I think its just a limitation of stock tegra2. I resovled it on my atrix by overclocking, so if we ever find a method of running a custom kernel I think it'll be resolved.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I have never experienced any lag whatsoever in the a100. also, i have heard so much about the viewing angles, and as aznmode said, there is only one slightly off angle and there is no reason whatsoever to have to be looking in that angle unless you just choose to do so. I have several tabs and i use the acer more than the others combined because it does everything that is needed and it is very easy to carry around. Also I have hear reviewers complain about the battery, however i can useit on and off all day long without charging and also it charges twice as fast as most. i wouldn't hesitate to purchase this tab again, i would just love to see some more development. The rom itself is very fast and extremely stable, the only real complaint that i have about the tab is that i would like to see usb host mode working. i also wanted to say thanks to crossix and all of the other devs that have put alot of work into it so far!

If you have a big microsd card, you could swap it with the internal memory (I really need to add direct links to these things to my signature..).
Just out of curiosity has anyone contracted koush to see if he can unlock the bootloader. On his website he says that he just needs the tablet for about a week. I know that you guys have been working on it and have made some bits of progress, but maybe a new set of eyes might be helpful. I do support for two as we got the kids some for Christmas but I need to leave them stock so they can't get into and erase stuff they need for them to run.
Don't want to step on anyone's toes or if this has already been attempted just disregard.
Thanks to the developers for their work.

I started this thread when I was really pissed off at the A100. Between my touch screen failing and the many hours spent to get a working tun.ko on it. Due to the encrypted kernel I could not even load a kernel module.
To explain I need tun.ko and advanced routing so I can connect to a Cisco VPN for work. While waiting for my tab to be returned from service went to Best Buy and picked up the Samsung Galaxy tab plus, installed VPNC and it worked with no problem.
The A100 is a really nice device and for 90% of people it is perfect. I actually preferred the styling compared to the Samsung slab, but VPN is the reason I wanted a tab in the first place.
I wish you all good luck with cracking the bootloader.
I plan on keeping my a100 at least until I can afford a tegra 3 tab.

Theres an app called shush that lets you program the phone so it will automatically go silent at certain times of the day that you specify.
I use setting profiles, it lets me set profiles then conditions and actions for each profuile.
It knows when im at any of my offices, at home, asleep, in a meeting (calendar item) by gps, cells, time, lots of other criteria.
Its a little sketchy to program at first, but I have moved my settings to 4 phones now and its really slick. I dont have to remember to flip a switch even.
If you pull down the notification bar there is a tab for silent /vibrate/ normal
Obviously before u holster it

Although I agree 1000%, I can certainly understand of an iphone user who is reluctant to switch again when they have finally got one that "just works"
An engineer friend of mine struggled thru all the pain of a slow/laggy POS android phone with all the asinine work arounds like juice defender/custom kernels etc just to eke out a little more battery life.
Since he is not into customizing the phone AT ALL, you couldn't drag him kicking and screaming back to ANY Android phone at this point..........
Nah, I'm just kidding around. I had a 3GS before my Inspire. It was OK, but that was about it. I don't miss it one bit, but I don't begrudge anyone for wanting simplicity.
No button to switch on the side like the iPhone. But I could also list so many things that the iPhone can't do or lacks compared to the Galaxy S3 so I don't mind that at all.
I have the iPhone 4S too and still enjoy my LTE GS3 over it.
I'm sorry but I think this thread is pointless. He either wants a better all around phone or he wants to stay with his old outdated pos phone. I would disagree the OP is asking is there any solution for a specific criteria he has. The reasons behind it maybe questionable but he is still asking does the phone have some functionality he may not know about, which is fine. The whole point of this community is to share and exchange ideas, tips, tricks and educate. There is nothing wrong with someone asking a question about the phone at all many have found features out about their phones that they had no idea it had. What I am struggling with is what your post has at all to offer other than your personal opinion about another phone manufacturer and a potential insult to the OP about his friend. Maybe in the future rather than post something of no value you don't post or post something that has value to others.

Coming from a Treo, a while back, I agree about the usefulness of the ringer switch. It is a nice simple, elegant solution and one of the things I miss about the Treo. The best solution I have found is one of the profile managers like someone mentioned. You can set it to silence the phone whenever a calendar appointment has a word you choose like "meet" or "call" or "lunch".

So I got the 10 pack + keychain kit from tagsfordroids.com. So far, the only real uses I have found were one for work and one for home. When I get my Bluetooth carkit thing from Dice Electronics this weekend, I may go ahead and program the keychain as well so the phone will connect to the car and such once I am in it. I am using NFC Task Launcher to program to tags.
I was wondering if anyone else uses NFC tags and for what uses?
I just got a few and do the same. I have one where I come home it turns on certain features, I have one in the car that turns on bluetooth, and one on my keychain that turns off WiFi, BT and a bunch of other stuff to save battery while I'm out. It would be even easier if someone would hack our nfc.apk so the setttings would apply at the lock screen or while screen off.
I use AnyTAG (free market app). It doesn't actually write the NFC tag, just reads the ID number from it (so you can still reuse "locked" tags). Would highly recommend it if you're the only person using your tags.

This was one of the first things I noticed immediately. Yeah, we know it's not much more to unlock the phone first, but would be soooo convenient.
I am moving this from General to Q&A because well, its a question. But I am very interested in how to use these better. It is a function out there for these phone that I think is not tapped enough. Maybe this thread will generate more information on the subject.
Thanks for the move. I struggled with whether is belonged in Q&A or not.
You have to unlock the phone to use them?? From a security standpoint I guess that's good but for convenience it almost makes them pointless.

I wouldn't say pointless. They can be programmed like a batch file, performing multiple tasks, not just a single function, but I agree that being able to do them with the phone locked would be nice.
I suppose though from a security standpoint, it does make more sense, didn't think of potentially harmful NFC uses.
For me its not worth buying tags for something I can just take a couple seconds to do or automate with tasker.

FWIW, here is a small 8 min video I just saw when I was looking for something else about some of the functions of NFC. He is using the same NFC launcher app that you are using as well. But also talks about how some Samsung NFC tags won't work with Nexus 4 but do obviously with GNex.
It is from Gigaom, off the Reuters news site.

Can't watch it while at work so I will check it later, but I have heard of some tags having weird incompatibilities and such. Every now and then, when formatting a tag or programming, I will get the weird error about the tag's memory being too small. Not sure if thats what the video is getting at, but I will check it when I get home.

No bugs here.
I think the term "doesn't care about their customers" is completely overused.
1) the mod community is probably less than 1% of their total customer base. As much as I wish they would, why would they leave the boot loaders unlocked for that small of a portion of their customers?
2) if they didn't care, they wouldn't have built out the biggest and most reliable LTE network. They built theirs out much faster than other carriers too. Have spent billions upon billions in their network, I believe more than any other carrier.

Verizon is running into a problem that I think all the carriers are going to run into while continuing their build out... A lot of towns and cities don't want anymore cell towers... Which is obviously a problem for the carriers.
I think they're trying to make the tower technology smaller but that costs a ton of money.

I think I'll just wait for the HTC One Max.
I tried LightFlow, which has a history for not working on HTC devices. Sadly, not only can you not set different LED colors and/or flash patterns for different contacts, you can't even set different vibrate patterns either! Now, the bug: When you uninstall the LightFlow after screwing around with it, the phone instantly resets to bootloader and boots back up. Very interesting bug. I've reproduced it three times, I should plug in my phone and get a logcat to see what's happening under the hood.

Verizon is running into a problem that I think all the carriers are going to run into while continuing their build out... A lot of towns and cities don't want anymore cell towers... Which is obviously a problem for the carriers.
I think they're trying to make the tower technology smaller but that costs a ton of money.

which is probably why they are going to build out on AWS as well. More users per tower but worse building penetration.

are you rooted? i messed around with lightflow, didnt like how it (didn't) work, so i uninstalled. no fireworks.
no other bugs either.
Weird Sounds
The only bug I've seen, and it may be a "feature" is that I get a random notification sound. I pull the phone out and there is nothing there, no emails or texts. I just looked in sounds and "Pull-to-refresh sounds" was ticked, so I un-ticked that...I have never noticed it making a sound when I pulled to refresh, but maybe it's making it when it refreshes. Otherwise, I have been running rock solid!
My bugs are software related and probably need to be fixed with an update. constant gps even if its off pattern unlock wont come on huge security glitch and some keyboard issues. What is a good samsung like keyboard?

Nope, I'm not rooted; completely stock. I did enable the "HTC Mode" or something like that in the settings which is supposed to make it function better on HTC devices. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. I tried the "Keep in foreground" setting that adds a notification option in hopes of forcing LightFlow to stay active all the time. Note that I own the full version as I'm coming from a device that it worked wonderfully on (Droid Bionic). I know that internally the demo/free version and the full version have some differences in how they manage notifications.

1) You covered the problem in your question "leave the bootloaders unlocked". They are going out of their way to inconvenience the 1%.
2) They don't care, it was self preservation. You can't **** around your customers and expect them to stay without some leverage, hence the best network. Plus its easier to pull in more new customers when you have the best service. They did it for the money, which is to be expected considering they are a business.

1) Isn't it HTC that locks the boot loader? If so, then Verizon isn't going out of their way.
2) If that's what you want to believe, you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

HTC? HTC wants us to have our boot loaders unlocked..
why do you think they made the HTCdev.com website?
There is only 1 reason that our boot loaders are locked right now:
Verizon Wireless.

I didn't say whether HTC does or does not want us to have unlocked boot loaders.
His comment was that Verizon was going out of their way to lock our boot loaders.
Considering all HTC Ones come with a locked boot loader that the user has to unlock themselves, I'm guessing it's HTC, not Verizon, that locks the boot loader. Therefore, Verizon isn't going out of their way. They're simply requesting HTC deny the VZW One on the HTCdev site.
I'm not trying to defend VZW, I wish they would allow us to unlock. I'm just defending my original comment. "The mod community is probably less than 1% of their total customer base. As much as I wish they would, why would they leave the boot loaders unlocked for that small of a portion of their customers?"
To say that VZW doesn't care about their customers is just ignorant.
I've been waiting so long for the NFC Rings to go on sale and now you can pre-order them: http://store.nfcring.com/
Anyone got one already, from the Kickstarter batch? Is it easy to use/worth getting, or is it just fiddly and a pain in the backside?
EDIT: Oh yeah, does it work through a case? I have Diztronic TPU case. If it don't work through that then I won't be interested.
Wow that's a pretty cool idea. I'd imagine it would work through a case. I use android beam between my phone and tablet and they both have cases on them.

Hahah, that's hilarious.
tap, tap, tap, tap..... tap, tap, tap, tap
"Screw it, I'll use the unlock code!"
To decrease battery usage, I switch off BT and NFC. Everytime I have to use this ring, I have to unlock the phone and switch on the NFC and then find the sweet spot. No thanks, sir.
I backed it when I thought it was a novel idea. Now not so much lol. I already gave him my funds, so it's just like a expensive nfc tag lol. I don't have it yet though. I think it's shipping soon.
why not just use the powerbutton LOLOL
This seems kind of pointless to me.
I ordered both the regular ring and the alpha ring through the kickstarter, once they arrive I'll let you know how they work on the nexus 5.

i think it's only good for NFC doors and sharing contacts, not worth it to use it to unlock phones
I think it's a great idea! It's like 2-factor authentication. Just tap the back of your phone. NFC draws VERY little power when on. I wonder if it could power on the phone as well as unlock it in one fell swoop. That would be even better.

No I don't think it can. All the vids I have seen, the devices has the screen on to be used.

The screen does have to be on and device unlocked for NFC to be used. It's a security thing. There are custom Kernels that allow NFC to be used without unlocking the device. Don't remember if it allowed use with screen off.
I have my current ROM (Mahdi-ROM) set to power on the screen when I take it out of my pocket anyway, so that wouldn't really be a problem for me.

Wha? How does that work, with the light sensor? Or by motion? Sorry for OT.

Motion sensor I assume. It freaked me out the first few times it happened because I didn't know it was an option in the ROM, and I thought my phone had been awake in my pocket. But upon digging through the settings, there is one under Lockscreen > Lockscreen Notifications called Pocket Mode You can set it to always wake the screen whenever you take it out of your pocket, or only wake if there are new notifications. Also it goes back to sleep when you put it in your pocket again. It's pretty dope.

Are you using the xposed module or is it baked into the rom?
Hey guys, I'm the creator of the NFC Ring, thought I'd just jump on to say thanks for all the comments.
I'd agree with most of your points, you wil find your own use for your NFC Ring, it might not be unlocking your phone for example.. We actually provide all of our source code on github so you can build your own apps on the back of the NFC Ring..
We don't want to box people into specific use cases, we just provide a few example ones to get hackers started with the possibilities.
Just to answer some criticisms directly:
1) It's just two NFC tags on a ring. Pretty much but the amount of R&D that goes into doing that well is actually a lot, RFID and metal don't play well together and we have to build our own antennas specifically for this use case.
2) RE Derek's video, yea he had an initial poor first experience, we ship both a classic and alpha size ring, the alphas sweet spot is larger which makes it more useful for when you can't see the phones sweet spot. After conversations with Derek (read the comments) he does mention he didn't spend any time with the ring before doing a demo and we do encourage people to get used to using the ring. It takes a few days but this is new technology so there is an inherent learning curve..
Overall I'm really proud of what we made with the NFC Ring, it's been a lot of work and we have been completely open about everything and shared everything from day one. We're shipping another 1,000 rings tomorrow and I'm really excited to see what folks hack together. Our job now is to support anyone who wants to build something with their ring, whatever that may be..
If you do wanna engage with the NFC Ring community perhaps nudge some of the community members to jump over here and share their thoughts
We're still a small community but our goals are big Why would you want to keep those pesky unsecure keys that scratch your phone?! That's really what we're at war with..
Thanks again guys, every bit of support really helps and even if we're not the company that provides your NFC Ring I hope we were the ones to at least kickstart things in the right direction with sharing and open-source at the core.
