I just exchanged my Photon for the epic touch today. and I'm very happy with it the phone is amazing. But the screen is not as bright as my photon was. And when I compared it to my wife's epic, the epic is definitely brighter, is this normal or do I possibly have a defective screen.
If someone can compare these two phone side by side the epic touch & epic please let me know which one is brighter to you because I thought the epic touch... amoled plus screen was supposed to be better in every way
PS. this is the first time I've ever posted on this site. XDA rock's !!!
Did you turn off the automatic setting?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
yes I did, and I set both phones to maximum brightness. I compare the settings screen with the black background and the white letters. And the letters just seem brighter on the epic
Try changing auto adjust screen power(adjust for image...) it seemed to help for me. stock though it is pretty dang dimm.
are you looking at it on a browser? cause browser has a auto dim on it as well. have to press menu key and then change it there.
I just compared max brightness to my gfs epic and honestly they looked about the same...i do think that the brightness is not as bright on the lower half of the scale..currently keep it about halfway
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I have both phones in front of me. The whites arent as white as the Epic but at night my Epic was always too bright. People would have brightness down and still use Screen Filter on that phone. I actually like it better...less headaches from staring at my phone so much...EDIT..actually max brightness is almost identical but auto seems a little less white
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
thanks a lot ervman1 mine definitely is not as bright. I will be changing it tomorrow thanks a lot.
for fun i took my cousins iphone 2g and compared the brightness of the both while on google.com and while my gs2 had crisper colors and looked better while looking at it from different angles but when looked straight down on both devices the old iphone 2g was much brighter than mine.. both devices were at 100% brightness was wondering if this was something that might be wrong with my phone which i hope not because I've had no other issues with it like lines or bad pixels and I've read that this phone should be like a lighthouse at 100% brightness so i really wouldnt want to exchange it and end up getting 1 with everything else bad.... sighhhhh smh

thanks for being a smart ass but just to say ive been using an iphone since day 1 and had to switch when i saw this beast but this was my first n only real question about spec type or maybe mine being faulty so far about it n i get your idiotic response............
Google has a lot of white. Is the "adjust screen power " option on under display? That will dim the screen automatically under full brightness
if you disable auto dim, then the brightness can be adjusted to the same level as iphone
you don't want to see this phone at max power, it can literally Burn your eyes
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
thank you for the real responses i had the auto dim disabled ( if you mean the auto bright not sure if you do) but didnt have the adjust screen power unchecked and now that made a huge difference way brighter WOW!!.. thanks thinking i will be leaving the screen power checked.....lol

the iphone screen might look nicer because you can fit it in the cup of your hand while you squint and pinch to enlarge each web page so you can read.. my only dilemma was thinking a 2g was brighter because i didnt get to test it with my 4 before i sold it but after seeing the full brightness of this I'm waaaayyyyyyyy over it...lol
Well, this might seem silly but i've got my old phone and tried to see which one is better.
The Optimus V has better colors to my eyes, more natural and it is the same colors as my LED monitor.
Also, the speaker quality and volume is a lot higher than both my GS2 and my friends Driod Razr. The quality of the Optimus V's speaker is also better than the iPhone but about the same volume. This makes all these $500+ phones ashamed, and i feel sick that my old $100 Android phone is better than my $600 GS2!
I wonder which screens would look more like LED monitors like my Optimus V, as i really hate Super Amoled now!

I know its a crappy display, but if you compare colors in apps and icons it looks alot brighter, natural than our GS2. i'm obviously not talking about resolution or anything. You would be able to tell unless you have a Optimus V next to your GS2. If i had a decent camera i would show you guys.

Seems silly.. Ill agree with the speaker being a bit low, but its not to bad..
But as for the screens I think maybe your LED monitor that your using as a way of comparing needs calibration. The SGS2 has a Super AMOLED Plus display.. the colors are much better than on your optimus...
I came from an Optimus V. This phone is much better. The Optimus feels like a toy in comparison. But I do have to say the optimus is damn near magical. It's a tough little guy and a good starting point for people new to Android. The development on that phone is crazy. They have roms from three different Android OSes. Not bad for a cheapo phone on an even cheaper network that shipped with Froyo.

After coming from an HTC Sensation, the speaker on the GS2 is awesome. I played with my friend's Optimus V. It crashes all the time. The colors look washed out. And yeah it's louder, but the overall quality is bad. He said he would buy my GS2 to get rid of his crappy phone and get on a real network as well. I mean really? 3G only?

I agree, the Optimus V took alot of beating from me. I even played football with it and threw it around and nothing happend to it.
But, if you compare the colors side by side on 100% brightness, the SG2 colors look washed out somehow. If you don't believe me try it yourself.

Bikrame is ABSOLUTELY right bro, also take it from me, I used to be a DIE HARD HTC fan, however, after countless years and devices later I just got sick and tired of waiting for them (HTC) to get their **** together. One can only take so much disappointment before they lose all hope and walk away. I've owned only the latest and greatest of HTC phones on the market, and it was only a matter of inevitable time before the random reboots, crashes and frozen screens come into play, you just get fed up of having to constantly take out the battery to fix your phone... SAMSUNG definitely gets the everyday needs of real world use. Love my SGS3 !!!
Just take a quick look at the link below if you're still not convinced bro... In the end, the choice is totally yours to make... We here at XDA just try to help and inform each other the way family would. Best if luck though bud.

Super AMOLED HD
You’ve probably heard lots of press regarding this display as it’s been the frontman for Galaxy S phones for quite some time now. One of the best features about these display panels is that their black levels are*unparalleled–that is to say that when displaying black, the screen is practically off. This results in much richer detail in images (it’s black level, not white level that increases this quality). Combined with very high brightness and great viewing angles, the result is excellent contrast ratio which makes Super AMOLED displays perform valiantly in the outdoors. You may also hear people describe Super AMOLED colors being “vibrant” and/or “punchy,” which is also due to this great contrast ratio. There are some drawbacks however to this display tech. Due to the nature of how the colors are delivered, Super AMOLED tend to be blue/greenish in color repdouction, which can be unwanted for those preferring neutral color balance. In addition, although the display consumes little power when displaying black, web browsing–which predominantly uses a white background–saps battery life disproportionately quickly. Finally, the display of the Galaxy S III uses a PenTile grid, which decreases*the*actual number of subpixels used on the display (and thus the pixel density)–this is noticeable at high*magnifications, but for most users will go unnoticed.
Super LCD 2
Super LCD 2 is a great all around screen as well. Although it doesn’t have killer black levels or astounding brightness, it has great white balance and accurate color reproduction as well as a true RGB subpixel layout which renders the finest bit of detail. In Chris Ziegler’s review of the One X, he notes that the Super LCD 2 display “[has]*got a near-perfect 180 degree viewing angle and perhaps the most accurate color reproduction and color temperature available…” and furthermore, “At 720p, it falls well into ‘retina’ territory where the individual pixels become invisible to the naked eye.”ConclusionIf the Galaxy S III’s display was a Super AMOLED HD Plus with an RGB stripe display, this debate would simply be a matter of whether you prefer color accuracy or vibrancy of the display, with which the argument could be made that while important for computers, color accuracy is not [as] important on a phone and thus the Super AMOLED’s colors are more*aesthetically*favorable. However taking the PenTile arrangement into account, the rest of the factors can seem to be a moot point to many buyers, especially when they see images like this:
The truth is, unless you have microscopic vision or are purposely looking for image artifacts, there is no way you are going to notice a difference on the screen.
After all of that, it boils down to a matter of personal preference

I actually do notice the difference though. Samoled hd has deeper blacks and whiter whites than the slCD2. So in the contrast category, Samsung wins imo. Although color reproduction, the slcd 2 had more natural tones.

I went to the AT&T store to check out the Optimus G. To my dismay, this phone has the same display issue that made me pass on the LG Nitro HD. It has a weird dithering or color banding issue. The LG Optimus 4G LTE had this issue, and it was written about here:
http://mobilesyrup.com/2011/11/23/bell-lg-optimus-4g-lte-review-video/
If you want to see the effect yourself, view this image on your Optimus G as well as another display.
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e400/crunchb3rry/testpatterns/lin1920x1080_spectrum.png
On most displays you will see a smooth transition between colors. Not so on the Optimus G. If you're doing this comparison in the AT&T store, I suggest you compare the image using an iPhone 5. That display is almost perfect for sRGB colorspace. This may be an issue that will make me pass on the Optimus G also.
UPDATE - 2012-11-30
Several people said they did not see the banding/dithering issue on this thread. So I went back to the AT&T store and looked again at the phone. I'm not sure if this was the same unit or not, because this time I could not see the same dithering issue I saw before. This makes me very happy because that means this will probably be my next phone! I just wanted to publicly post the update, lest I besmirch the good name of LG displays.
How about finding a display above 4.5" to use as a comparison. I'll wager that you can't find one that's better. I'll deal with a trivial color distortion to have a display that's 4.5" or larger.

I don't have a issue with my screen, its beautiful, no banding or anything:good:

Agreed. Screen really is nice.
Sent from my LG Optimus G.
I've had my Sprint LGOG since Friday and the screen has remained amazing. I held it side-by-side with my friends iphone5 and even at 50% brightness the screen looked 100x better than his at 70%.
I updated my earlier post with an updated impression. I went back to the AT&T store, but this time I could see no banding on the same image. I'm not sure what changed since then, because there was a definite issue with the phone I saw last time. This time I compared the same photograph between the iPhone 5 (nearly a reference display), my HTC Vivid, the Samsung Galaxy Note II, and the LG Optimus G.
The Samsung had terrible color reproduction, typical of AMOLED displays. Maximum brightness was low, some black crush issues, and a image was too warm and too much green tint. Saturation was okay using the Movie Screen mode. I was shocked AT&T left this in, as they've been stripping this function from their Samsung phones.
My HTC Vivid was also a bit too warm and over saturated. Brightness was better than the Samsung though.
The LG Optimus G was the closest to the accurate colors of the iPhone 5. I daresay it's the possibly the best display I've seen yet on an Android device. I guess I should have also compared to the HTC One X+, which is also known for a good display. But I was short on time.
Definitely the nicest screen I have seen on a phone.. the iphone screen is nice but this screen to me is just as nice. I use I generally at less than 50% brightness and its sharp as a tack even when viewing up close.
Two thumbs up she's a beaute

Doesn't LG make the retina display? Lol. And from what I know, IPS is an LG tech. Also the i5 has no ips plus. I have both, my LG is nicer, to my eyes anyway. Maybe its because I feel Im looking at a matchbox with the iPhone screen.
Also just note I have no yellow at all. Maybe a touch blue. The i5 is much more yellow.
I may be wrong on lg making retina, it might be sharp. Regardless the G has a fantastic LCD. Its way up there.

I have the Sprint variant. And my screen is absolutely. Horrible. I went to the store to compare it to the demo both with full brightness and. Can confirm that my screen has faint lines and pixelation...nothing representative of an ips screen...im sort of disappointed
The colors are actually really washed out on the screen as well. Vs the demo had a slight tint but it looked more natural, also the lines didnt show up as much on the demo as well. To bad sprint repair centers are like pulling teeth, most their employees aren't the brightest people

I just bought the Sprint version yesterday and mine has the dreaded yellow screen tint on the bottom. I noticed it right away. It almost looks like they are using warmer leds on the last quarter of the screen. Its very annoying and distracting when I'm on a page with a white background.
With that said, the screen is not washed out. Its probably the nicest looking screen out there. Everything is sharp and contrasty. There is some slight banding on greys but its not a big deal.
I also have other issues with the build quality. For example the camera rattles inside the phone when I place it down on a table. I'm wondering if Sprint got the $hit end of stick with quality control here.
Don't get me wrong, the phone is still really nice. Just frustrated with these small issues.
