Rooting the EVO 4G on 2.3.4 - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is more than likely a noob question but I just received a notice for the 2.3.4 OTA update. I was wondering if I went through with it is it possible to still do the revolutionary root method?

Yes, you can still use revolutionary root.

Thanks. Should I just perform the OTA update and the reroot or should I unroot the phone prior to the update

Why reroot? If you want the stock rooted update, just flash that specific rom. Brad has the stock rooted update rom, just look for it in the development section. It should be on the first page

OTA update question

Can I do the update over the air if I'm using a custom ROM? I thought I read somewhere that other OTA's have bricked phones.

OTA updates don't work on custom ROMs. If you have unrevoked forever and don't want to wait, you can just flash back to stock everything to get it back to working. Otherwise it'll only take a few hours after release for a rooted version of it to be released in the forums.

System update

Would my phone unroot if I accept the system update on my phone? I think its the build number update. It says system update 3.29.651.5

Hmm I see well is there any way I can update without unrooting my phone or is it not necessary?

You can probably find a rooted stock rom somewhere in the development section. Hopefully there's one that's been updated to the latest release.

Yep hopefully there is. It took me for ever to finally root my phone I'm not that great with rooting phones since I'm new to this stuff. Should be somewhat easier to root again.

Would this work?

I recently lost my Wimax keys and I was thinking if I flashed back to a froyo Rom and went in and took the ota update to break root and turn it in saying that since the update my 4g hasn't been working and demand a replacement phone with 2.2 on because I hated 2.3 and it was glitchy. Any input on if that would work?

Lol it actually seems like a good plan bro but don't they have a way to find out if you've rooted ur phone. Try it but make sure to unroot completely and in bootloader make sure to flash it to s-off.

I would post links but can't since I'm on ma phone.

To unroot, you simply, download and flash the unrevoked s-on zip in recovery, you'll be s-on and can't flash, ect, so do that first, then flash a 3.70 RUU [PC36IMG to make it easy]. Though I think the sprint rep will tell you they can't control what firmware is on the evo, so you could get stuck with a 2.3.

Sprint OTA update?

Got a pop up notification about an android update is ready for my phone. I'm currently just stock rooted. Should I flash the unroot zip first or can I accept it while rooted? I'm sure I would lose root. What exactly is the update? Couldn't be JB already could it?

Sorry i didnt notice you were rooted already, you should unroot to accept the update because in order to receive it you need stock recovery, check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1743923 download and flash the stock recovery thats on the thread and then accept the update and reroot
Don't bother. The update is nothing special

Yes you will. But you'll lose root and CWM of you accept it.
Edit: if you have superuser paid version it does have ota survival but its not guaranteed to keep root.

If you have a custom recovery or if you have removed sprint bloatware it won't go through. Just root us fine though

On stock rooted Roms and some TW Roms yes. But i usually take the update on my stock rooted Rom. It tries to install and restarts the phone then i get a android with triangle screen. But, i pull the battery and restart and all is fine. No more ota notifications and everything remains the same...

You know if you read in the general section. There is an ota notification kill. Then you dont have to worry about that. But to each their own.

Has anyone tried Rootkeeper with this OTA? If so, can you provide feedback on the results?
