AOSP Browser on the Latest Kang for E4GT - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

If only the aosp browser on Gingerbread was hardware accelerated, coming from the stock touchwiz rom and an iPhone 4s before that, the aosp browser's pinch to zoom and scrolling is just not as smooth as on sites that i frequent alot and it bothers me a lot. I can install Opera but it ruins the "aosp experience" by having to use 3rd party apps
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1375125
I wonder if this would make the aosp browser "iphone smooth" on the E4GT
Cant wait for a AOSP ICS with a real HW accelerated browser

CM6 2.2 stock gallery SUCKS, is there a replacement?

The gallery app in sense is faster then the 3g gallery app in aosp froyo(never thought I would say sense is faster). It's slow in loading images(even worse with large images), doesn't like to refresh the folders when I add new images, hates to load large folders.
Is there a replacement app I can use and get rid of the 3d gallery?
I -hate- the 3D Gallery. The Eclair 2D gallery was much better.
The only alternative I've found is bread and butter gallery (B&B Gallery) but its a bit iffy too. Why isn't there a fast lightweight gallery that works well anywhere? Ugh

Finally, hardware accelerated web browser!

Nice, very nice Finally, full hardware accelerated web browser!

Happy .. Happy .. Happy ..
I can now ditched Opera Mobile .
Hell, it's "finally, hardware accelerated UI!".
Lmao. Late to the party. One of the requirements of ICS is hardware acceleration of 2d elements of the ui/os. Its about f'in time google.
I voided my warranty and your mum.
I was hoping some of the browser controls would be at the bottom of the screen since it'll make browsing with one hand easier kinda like in opera mobile, reaching the top tab button will be a pita with your thumb with such a tall screen..
Is scrolling hardware accelerated too? One of the main reasons I liked samsung devices is because of the amazinh smooth scrolling.
Between the click of the light and the start of a dream.
The scrolling and pinching/zooming looks pretty quick and smooth.
I'd like to see the results of a SGS2 browser test ran the Galaxy Nexus: open a bunch of pages with flash videos playing at the same time (I think there were over 10), and then zoom/pinch one of them. The SGS2 handled that without lag. I'd like to see the HTML5 and Flash results from the GUIMark3 benchmark, too.
The Sunspider result is 1983ms (vs. 3385ms for SGS2, smaller is better) and the V8 version 6 result is 1387 (vs. 336 for SGS2, larger is better), so that bodes well for browsing on the Galaxy Nexus.
Cant wait for the ics to my nexus s. Damn smooth
Every video I see makes me more and more excited for ICS and the GN. So damn sick.
[Q] GPU rendering (smoooth scrolling) in Browser
Hi,
I can't find info whether Google implemented GPU scrolling in ICS ala iOS or Samsung in their latest 2.3.4+ firmwares for GS and GS2?
That's only thing that's keeping me away from AOSP (CM7 now), but if it's in the ICS now, I wouldn't care about Samsung abandoning SG1.
If anyone has NG, please try. Thanks.
From the videos I've seen, the whole os is hardware accelerated including the browser

Everything OS-wise is supposed to be 2D Hardware Accelerated according to the Android Code release page. However, it might be more sluggish compared to the SGS2, as they're both Hardware-Accelerated, but the SGS2 is only pushing 480*800 while the Nexus coming in at 1280*720.

The British tech blog, The Inquirer, posted a short review of the Galaxy Prime. This is what it had to say about performance:
"We certainly noticed the speed when browsing the web and opening apps, but we did notice a slight lag when changing the orientation of the device."
The article doesn't mention if the review device was running 4.01 that had the fix for video stuttering and whatnot.

You'd be surprised how little power is required to perform full 2D acceleration.

In Android Central's quick look video of the Galaxy Nexus that was posted today, the narrator mentions that the entire device is hardware accelerated multiple times.
I can't post links yet, but you can find the video embedded in the 4th story on the second page of Android Central. Likewise, you can search YouTube for "galaxy nexus, today" (without the quotes) and it's the first video.
Hope this helps!

I've just seen the video at the AndroidCentral.com. The browser is fast, but the point is not how quick you can scroll the page (it is quick), but how smooth is the actuall scrolling. If you saw iOS in personal (or Samsung 2.3.5+ firmwares for SGS1/SGS2) compared to AOSP, you'd know what I'm talking about.
No smooth browsing as I can see so far, unfortunately.

How do you expect to see 60fps smoothness on a heavily compressed 30 fps video?
And it's getting worse since there is no vsync between phone display and camera when recording the video (of course).

Do you see on the long webpage partial appearing of the page while scrolling on sgs2? On NG?
Have you ever tried Opera Mobile? Even on my SGS it has amazing performance, and you don't see parts of the webpage only render correctly after a delay. It's all 60FPS and rendered right away.
These guys beat Samsung and Google for performance. Only issue is their browser takes a few seconds to start up.
From this video I would say the scrolling in the browser is quite smooth. I had a SGS II before so I have the comparison.

How much does JB improve browser experience?

If anyone's using jellybean already, can you comment on how smooth browsing is? Has pinch to zoom and scrolling speed/choppiness been improved?
Pinch to zoom is significantly better. Scrolling is still "choppy" as you put it. The biggest improvement is the quick controls which is under labs in settings.
I use Chrome, so the browsing experience is the same. Not sure why you would want to use anything else since you can have it sync EVERYTHING between desktop/laptop/tablet/phone/etc. and also share tabs between devices as well.
Zoom is really smooth! However, I cannot confirm the choppy scrolling. The improvements are not too large overall, but on the other hand, nothing got worse either. ^^
A major drawback for some users might be that flash support ended with 4.0.4 and will not be extended beyond that by Adobe. If you are browsing a lot of flash sites, this may of course significantly affect your browsing experience.
On the other hand, with flash being disabled once and for all, this is a great opportunity to switch to Chrome, which has just grown out of the beta phase as of this week (...coincidence?). I like the Browsing experience with Chrome much better than with the stock browser (which applies to both 4.0.4 and 4.1).
Cheers

What new options did they add for the quick controls? Does it rival ICS+?
Also I can't use chrome till it can hide top bar, has quick controls, and has invert color option. Does chrome have those yet? Plus chrome is always choppy for me compared to stock browser.
Adobe flash player officially does not work on Chrome Browser for android 4.1 Jelly Bean... This to me is not improving browser experience even with all the other enhancements of the 4.1 browser...
Wait a second...choppy browser? The stock browsers in both ICS and JB are extremely smooth. The ICS browser introduced cached scrolling and zooming like in the iPhone, bringing iPhone like smoothness to the browser.
Runs butter smooth in both my Xperia Play ICS install and on my Galaxy Nexus, not sure what you guys are talking about.
Chrome still doesn't support this, so it can be choppy on large websites, but it's an add on browser, not stock.
Edit: I just tried the newest build of Chrome and it has been bumped up to the 60fps scrolling too using the cache tech. There's more clipping than the stock browser but it's now buttery smooth, even on complex sites using Jellybean

Guess you'll have to stick to playing Farmville in a different browser then. Also, Adobe stated that Flash is going to stop being supported for mobile devices, and will not support JB outside of early support over the next month or so.

I never used the browser or browser + on ICS because I found it convenient to use Chrome with all its syncing capabilities. With the new quick controls, I realize what is missing from chrome. The controls in JB browser are much more enhanced and as a result much more useful. They definitely rival that of the Browser +'s. Check out this video to look for yourself:

Wow that's pretty useful. My current setup has 3 rings of quick controls in the browser which takes up the whole screen when they appear. Looks very efficient and useful in JB.
Dolphin HD Pinch to Zoom Appears Broken ATM in JB
Dolphin HD pinch to zoom is currently not working in JRN84D / 4.1 (MoDaCo ROM) which paralyzes the browser usability.
I don't have a scientific testing method, but overall it feels better, more responsive, quicker. You only really notice when you jump back to an ICS ROM.

AOSP vs TW Camera Quality - and 3rd party Apps

Hi All,
Running 4.2.2 AOSP buttery smooth with excellent battery life. Using SOA with SOAP and 240 density I'm getting as good of battery life as Touchwiz based Roms and Kernels.
I love me some AOSP any day over Touchwiz on my Note II EXCEPT:
I really miss the Touchwiz Camera app. I hate the 4.2 Camera App, even hated it on my Nexus 4 before I sold it for my Note II. I even feel like the image quality isn't quite as good.
I don't really want to flash back to a TW to test the camera, and have been searching for an answer. Does TW take better pics than AOSP as far as quality for the Note II? (I know HTC Sense cam app does vs AOSP on the One S/One X for example, so wondering if TW is similar)
For the AOSP users out there, how are you finding the camera app? Have you tried any 3rd party app's like Line Camera? What's the best solution for 3rd party apps?
I'm of the same opinion. I don't necessarily feel the quality of pics is any better, I just prefer the UI and bells and whistles.
This is an about-face for me, as far as the Sammy camera is concerned; on my previous Note and GS2, I didn't like it and always went with a different app (most recently the Camera 4.2). But now, with slo-mo, screenshots, pause, etc etc, I really like it.
My problem is (as noted in another thread on this Q&A board), that all of my video recordings have a "popping" sound on them, and I've done EVERYTHING to try and solve it to no avail.
I've moved on to CM10.1 nightlies and have no prob with the 4.2 camera.
I use alt s-pen apps, so I'm not really beholden to TW, but if my camera worked, I would have stayed.
One more note: I've just started using Snap Camera, which improves upon Camera 4.2, and so far so good.
I have seen several of these threads, never posted on any of them but have seen several. The AOSP camera in my opinion does not take as good of pictures as the stock Samsung camera. The first thing I have noticed is that the pictures taken with the AOSP camera are not as clear or crisp as the TW camera. More noticeable when zoomed in. Secondly the file size of AOSP pictures is often times smaller than the TW file size. This could be just different information stored within the picture but I lean more to picture quality making up the size difference. I could be wrong. Lastly I know it is just my preference but I prefer the TW file naming format versus the AOSP file naming format.

I am using the Camera and Video a lot right now as I'm a new father, so I'm going to switch back to a TW rom for first time in a while mostly for the Camera for testing and comparing.
I just flashed Jedi XP 12 and Saber Kernel
the touchwiz camera app was fast with picture taking. was very quick when moments were there. does the aosp camera snap pics with the same speed?
i know when i was using my nexus 4, it was a slug compared to the note 2. probably wasn't any faster than taking pics with my galaxy s2.
Try Camera FV-5
Fantastic SLR style app.

Has anyone done or tried to do some actual comparisons between AOSP and TW cameras?
I'm basing this simply off my experience with the phone - I used CleanRom for quite a while, then went 4.2.2 (Rootbox then SOA), and now back to JediXP
Honestly- I miss Sons of Android - I love AOSP - but I still feel like the TW Cam takes better pics.
Am I making this up?

I agree that Snap Camera is great. Only one thing I noticed (And this may not be exclusive to Snap Camera, but maybe other AOSP apps):
I did a test to compare the quality of stock vs. Snap Camera. I couldn't discern any difference in quality, but I did notice that the stock app captures "more". What I mean is, I set the camera in the same position, taking identical pics of a box with both apps. The Snap Camera pic cut off the top of the box, but the stock app got the whole box in the picture. It's as though Snap C is slightly zoomed in, compared to stock. No, it wasn't zoomed in. Both were set at same settings, same focus, etc.
Anyway, aside from that, I think it's a great app too.
I was actually wondering if there would be any way to install the samsung camera into an aosp ?
Probably not possible. Just thought about it today. Because I like Liquid Smooth. But some things are not as functional as a tw rom. Like the camera.
I dont like the aosp stock camera it always locks up on me, so I will have to give these other cam apps mentioned above a try.
Good post and replys guys, thanks.
The AOSP camera app, probably isn't able to use all the advanced features of the camera hardware, because the driver is not open source and likely requires the Samsung framework. AOSP is using a basic driver that simply allows it to take picture, but it's not particularly good or useful.
IMO, AOSP is inferior to a TW/Nature UX rom. I would never use an AOSP rom on a Samsung phone. Just too many features I use would be missing, and I don't like the way AOSP looks.
I definitly prefer everything AOSP over TW except the Camera
I am using a TW app though and the camera quality is better - to the point I will get used to TW.
TW vs AOSP Camera tests

My wife has a stock S3 and I am running Carbon ROM 1.7. I did some rudimentary testing and was suprised to find that the AOSP camera took slightly better shots. Close ups in good light had better contrast and colour realism than TW.
However I cannot get over the fact that AOSP clips the viewfinder to a widescreen format - it is impossible to frame a photo well because of this. In addition the camera crashes quite regularly and requires a reboot.
hardly anyone mentions video - I currently have CM 10.1 and really like it but the camera/video is a deal breaker for me. Trying to take video renders them unusable because not only about the quality but the sound - horribly distorted, far cry from TW based ROMs can achieve. I find the pix on TW are a bit too bright (taking indoor shots with a lot of light tends to 'blind' the camera too much - easy fix is to bring exposure 2 notches down, and I have a mod that does it automatically). So, sadly, no more AOSP roms for me strictly because of the camera. Return of the Jedi for me
Touchwiz camera is much better..
Tried both on my s3 that I had before this phone and tw roms took much better pics
I hate AOSP camera too and for the same reasons I stick with TW ROMs. However, I really like carbon ROM 1.7 so I found this link to help in the camera area. It's not better than TW but it is a huge improvement over stock camera features. Let me know what you think...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746611
Tried the mod from the above post and ultra pixel doesn't seem to do much of anything. Just can't zoom as much.

I find the CM 4.2.2 Camera to be a little quicker with taking pics. I also find it produces more crisp pictures. Could just be me, or the ROM I'm on.
Never really cared for the TW camera gimmicky options; Best Face, Best Picture, Etc.

[Q] AOSP Video Recording

I've been trying out a lot of ROMs. I really love the pure android experience with the add-ons that AOSP roms give along with the black and white interface and PIE, but there's one problem.
Installing AOSP will cost you the ability to take 4K and HFR video. Sure, the android camera has the HFR option, but it doesn't actually do anything. Is this an issue that's getting fixed? I despise the Touchwiz menus, sounds, dialer, etc. but I have to go with it if I want to take high-quality video. Is there anything out there that can fix this problem on AOSP right now?
