I don't want to flash a custom rom but all this talk about the vast improvements in 4.0.3 are making me wonder what the hold up is in rolling it out to Galaxy Nexus owners. At least GSM owners like myself, there aren't any carrier approvals required for that.

Not really sure what the hold up is. I too want the pure stock version of 4.0.3, don't like a lot of customizations are whatnot. Hopefully it will come soon.
I have used Bugless Beast, which is pretty much AOSP with very minor changes and fixes.
I held out for about two weeks lol.
Finally caved, I flashed AOKP and Franco's Kernel. Been loving it ever since I'll never go back to stock.

My guess is 4.0.3 won't be released and google will push out 4.0.4 w the multi touch bug fixed.
There's also a browser crash bug w 4.0.3 that I hope google fixes as well.
There is always something coming that's the best rom in the world it seems

When they have sorted out the bugs with the battery life then I think 4.0.3 will be released.

Go to androidandme mobile site or nytimes mobile site and move around and view a couple of articles. The browser will crash soon afterwards.
It has to do with the ads. If you use an ad blocker the crashes disappear.

Lucky. My stock GN browser is buggy as all get out. A crash once a day? Switched to Dolphin solved the problem.
I agree though. It's 2012. Let's go with 4.03. I won't root or change. Stock only.

If they can improve battery life by at least 25% then I'll be happy.
What other improvement are we to expect with 4.0.3 / 4.0.4?

Nothing wrong with the battery life on the LTE version, you just have to turn off LTE
But then you get not so fast speeds. Verizon 3g maxes out around 3mbps. But most don't see even that. Though I do have to say Verizon 3g handles congestion better.

Are u on 4.0.3? Only happens w that version.
I've been hesitant to root, because the rooting process gives me a panic attack and I don't want to have to re-do it after a push to 4.0.3 happens. I take it there's no assumption yet as to when a push upgrade is due to happen?
I'm hesitant mainly because I'd have to wipe and because Google Wallet is working perfectly right now and I don't want to mess with it.

I had perfectly working google wallet also on 4.0.2 stock and thought I will just wait out till Google releases official 4.0.3. But then I got tired n flashed aokp.n believe me, it's like my phone is freaking fast .if you thought that 4.0.2 is smooth seriously you gotta try 4.0.3.its mind numbing. Plus Franco's kernel.
PS-i like all the customizations of aokp...except the bootanination.n wallet works.

As some of you may know, odexed roms offer better battery life and superior performance compared to deodexed roms, but the one drawback is that they're harder to mod. I was looking for a odexed rom (coming from the HTC One X, almost all stock roms were odexed, so I expected the same, lol) but couldn't find a single one. So I went on a search to find a script or something to odex the rom I was using, and I came across this!
"Odex Me" by Paulobrien! Here's the link to the original thread, all credit goes to him! :good:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1215271
Now here's where my part comes in, my step-by-step guide!
This will work on ANY DEODEXED ROM, I'm compiling a list of confirmed ones however for you guys that are weary of this.
*Use this only AFTER you've made any changes to the framework or flashed .zips that change the framework.*
First and foremost, make a backup! You should always do this before messing with system files!
1) Make sure you have a rooted rom, without root the app won't do much but install.
2) Allow "Unknown sources" by going into Settings > Security > and scroll down.
3) Download the .apk either down below, or from the link above.
4) Install as a normal app.
5) Open the app, make sure you give it root access, and it will run.
6) Let it run, it will reboot your phone, take around 5-10 minutes, and then reboot again. You will be greeted by "Android is upgrading" which means its rebuilding your dalvik cache.
7) Once its at the lock screen, done! You can make sure it did its job by using a file explorer with root access (I use Root Browser, if that helps) and go to the root of your phone's memory, go to system > app, and you should see a bunch of "appnamehere".odex files.
You will see a noticeable increase in performance with all the system apps like Messaging, Phone, Browser, etc. And because all the base apps are now odexed, you will also see an increase in battery life as well.
List of ROMs confirmed working
FreeGS3 R6 (confirmed by me, using it currently)
Intrigue ROM
Crimson v4
Wicked v2 (confirmed by as well, check post #48 for screen shots)
Let me know if you think there's a way to make the guide more clear, or add some information in. I will also try and answer all questions you may have! Enjoy this, its truly amazing!
If you're having issues with it not odexing on ANY rom, try using the Trinity kernel. I've tested every rom with Morfic's kernel and it works flawlessly. Don't forget to thank him for his work! :good:
Trinity Kernel, use the latest #46 release for best results and speed.
Please, if it worked for you, let us know what rom you're running so others can be assured that it works!
Here are some sources that explain the benefits of odexing in more technical and specific terms.
Difference between odexing and deodexing Q/A
Rootandandroid short article on odexing
XDA TV Episode which explains the benefits of odexing

Because it splits the .apk (app package) into two parts, the .apk and a .odex file. Usually, for the phone to use an app, it has to decompile the .apk and get the parts it needs to run the app. With the odex files, which stands for "Optimized Dex" the startup time is much faster since the phone doesn't have to perform any optimizing at startup/runtime, and because of that, it also uses less CPU power, and thus makes it faster, smoother, and battery life is increased.

Well after flashing a deodex rom (all the roms here) and any add ons, running this to make the phone faster and increase battery life is nothing short of amazing. Don't have to compromise over customization, or performance.
And yeah, its because of the One X that I realized the benefits lol

There were very few changes to the launcher in 4.1.2. Most dealt with orientation on larger screens (like the Nexus 7). So I don't see how it would be any less or more smooth than 4.1.1. Most likely, the user didn't do a clean install or they are just noticing small lags more because they are looking for it.

Cannot agree more. :good:
Maybe it's just a placebo effect but I think autorotation (landscape to portrait and vice versa) animation seems more fluid here than on 4.1.1 which I considered little jittery.
Thank you everyone. I am sure this jerks more than 4.1.1 in my device.. But if it works normally for everyone else then the problem has to be in my device/installation. Installation should be clean (done according installation script). One thing I'm wondering is Google Wallet. I downloaded image with wallet, but it does not seem to be enabled in my region. But neither that should cause jerking..?

ASOP roms may not have them, but should be included in stock.
Do a nandroid backup, flash and test. It is a very very small file to flash. It helped me with AOKP (AOSP).
Before flashing over 4.1.2, I flashed over a 4.1.1 and .... I think a got some additional smoothness, but .... as there is not accurate procedure to measure smoothness, could be only my sensation.

When I am presaing the soft keys it takes a couple of seconds to respond, apps loading times can reach about 20 seconds, contacts loading too. I am using the GSM Gnex with CNA 3.8 rom and franco kernel r298. The lags occurred with XenonHD too. Dont get me wrong, I am not complaining about the developers, I am just trying to figure out if I am doing something wrong.

Are you rebooting your phone or just leaving it on for weeks at a time?
I remember someone saying it has to do with the zram optimizations in roms and kernels. at first it makes things faster and the the idea implemented is good in theory but over time it makes things unbearably slow. i dont know the technical reasons for this, someone with more knowledge than me may be able to explain it.

Obviously downloading from the Play Store is using system resources (RAM, a % of the processor etc.) so a slow down is to be expected.
The phone restarting itself =/= to rebooting it regularly. Just like your computer you shouldn't leave it running 24/7. Sometimes you just need to give your phone a restart.
I think the lags are related to the heatcof the Gnex. Maybe the my cheap case makes it worse. I will check without case so it have more contact with the air. I will report the results.

Yup u are right. Many people used to tell that Franco kernel is the best and stuff but even that after using for a few days gets slow whereas in stock all that crap doesn't happen. I still use Franco because games work smoother on it compared to stock. Even the battery life is inconsistent. That's the only one I saw/tried. I'm not aware of any others available for public testing.

I'll have another one tomorrow or possibly tonight I'll reopen this thread.. Still buggy but phone data WiFi and headphones work .. Still no external sound tho...
Need some donations so I can pay off the wife and have more time to work on this beast..
Although I only spent a little time with the build, I just wanted to give a huge props to the devs that help put this beast together. The fact that it is still alpha but flies like there is no tomorrow is awesome. I thought I got rid of the little lag that came with mine but that second that it takes to open an app sometimes completely disappears. Open anything, close anything, nothing close to stuttering. Fluid.
At any rate, don't have the funds to donate, but wanted to throw out a huge thanks anyways. Makes the wait worth it. Take your time finishing it up, making even better.
