Kernel Advice

I am getting ready to install a custom kernel on my dinc, and just wanted to get a confirmation that I'm going to be doing it right. So if you agree with this procedure, let me know!!! And be sure to include a kernel suggestion(priority is battery life)
1. Find Kernel and download the .zip file
2. Plug the phone in, mount to disc drive, and drag the .zip file over to the root of your SD card
3. Unplug phone, boot into clockwork recovery
4. chose option: Install zip from SD
5. chose option: choose zip from SD
6. Choose your custom kernel
7. click yes to install
8. Reboot phone
Sound right guys???

Yes, that is more or less correct. It's not always mentioned, but you should also wipe Dalvik when flashing kernels.
As far as a suggestion, what kind of ROM are you running? Keep in mind that Sense ROMs and AOSP kernels may not play nice together, and vice-versa.
For Sense, I personally like Lou's #8, great battery life and smooth as hell performance.
AOSP, I like Savage Zen, what little I've used it.. but it's fairly new and I've been on Sense ROMs recently.

I'm running the stock rom that came with my incredible. Rooted using unrevoked, don't know if that takes me back to 2.1 or not. And how do I wipe Dalvik?

Recommend SwiFTP on device and an ftp client on PC, then no need for USB or mounting drive, etc - it becomes drag & drop.

Nandroid is a full system backup. In Clockwork, go to "Backup and Restore" and click Backup. This creates a folder in /SDCard/Clockworkmod/backup/date-and-time.
To wipe Dalvik, in Clockwork go to "Advanced" and click "Wipe Dalvik Cache." Be warned, the next time you boot after this wipe it is possible for it to take literally several minutes, that is fine and normal, just let it go.
To find your Android version, go to Settings > About Phone > Software Information. You are probably on 2.2 if the phone is new.

yeah 2.2 is correct. So do I need to download nandroid, or just follow the backup steps in clockwork like you said?

Just do the backup in Clockwork. People refer to it as a "Nandroid" because that is what the option was actually called in the older versions of Clockwork. Nowadays it's just called "Backup," but the old name is still used in conversation.

Thanks for the info. Now something was said about how I need to be careful about the kernels I install, care to link a stock speed undervolted hydra kernel that will work with what I got going on?

Personally I would go with ziggy's or HeyItsLou's kernels

Hydra kernels haven't been updated in quite some time, and to be honest i'm not even sure where to get them anymore.
But, thats your decision to make, the best kernel is the one that works best with your phone and for you.

I don't believe they are undervolted, but here is HeyItsLou's thread. His kernels (as stated earlier, specifically #8 in my case) are what I have had the best of luck with when it comes to Sense ROM performance:

Performing the backup now, and got Lou's #8 ready to be loaded. I'll post back and let everyone know how it runs. Thanks for the help guys

Install went well. I noticed right off the bat I lost the little weather animation that shows up on my home screen. I figure if the kernel plans to save me some battery life, those little animations have to go I'm assuming

Are you sure that you lost them? I don't ever remember hearing that switching kernels stopped the Sense weather animations. (I could be wrong though)

Nope, it actually came back up all of a sudden after a few minutes, not sure what caused the delay, but the kernel seems to be working smoothly with my phone. I wouldn't be surprised though if I tried out a bunch to see which one I like best, ya know?

having problems with kernels
I have loaded kernerls in the past... but now im running cm6 stable and i tried a few of chads kernels.. snd my phone boots to the lock screen but i have no touch input? can someone provode a link to some kernerls that should work with cm6.. and btw will the same kernels work with cm7?

Can't confirm the Nandroid backup enough... always do one before you do anything.

I'm using savage Zen for the 1st time today and it seems fairly stable... rom is minuit 1.2.11... battery life is 52% with 11 hours use... I like this the best so far...

Question...how do you go back to the latest stock kernal? I am currently running the latewt Magnolia, and decided to try Lou's #9. I've been having some difficulty (yes I've played with a bunch of roms and kernals) but was told in the magnolia discussion that stock was the best and optimized for yge rom. So how do I go about doing it? Thanks!

[Q] new rom/kernel

Hey guys, I just rooted my phone a few hours ago from the tutorial here on this site for my android 2.3.3 hboot 2.16....well i finally got to root it and got really excited. THe main 2 reasons i rooted were for wifi tethering and terrible battery life. Bought an extended battery before but didnt help much.
Anyway i think i flashed it lol with superuser? ( i backed up files with rom manager and myrombackup) I just downloaded set cpu with the following settings
enabled check notifications check
screen off priority 100 245 max 245 min performance
charging full priority 50 998 max 245 min ondemand
battery<75 priority 50 806 max 245 min ondemand
So my question is, are these good settings? how much better do you think my battery life will be with these settings?
oh and do roms and kernels come in like the same zip file? where i flash them together? and which do you guys think is best for battery life, but similar to the evo stock rom? i dont wanna change my phone too much, i like it, just didnt like the battery life...sorry if this question is redundant, but most of the threads i found were really old so i didnt wanna put in an old rom or kernel if i dont have to.... THANK u guys so much before hand.

If you want to stay stock there are a few roms in the development forum that are stock with bloat removed and minimal mods. You might check some of those out.

The next step would be a ROM that is ported to the Evo but with a stock look. I am running MikG which I think is one of the best.
A ROM will always come with a kernel that will be flashed with it. You can always flash a different kernel over it later. Freedom is a good kernel (see my sig for a link).

If your looking for a stock rooted ROM with good battery life you might want to try a froyo ROM with an sbc kernel you will get almost 2 times more out of your battery and its the same old sense 1.0 so you won't even notice a difference.

thanks a lot! but umm how is the battery life on MikG? and what does bloating mean and how do i remove them? lol sorry if i sound like a newbie :/ and ohh- one question on roms, can i keep this rom forever lol, or will it end up not working one day and ill have to update to another one???

Battery is OK like any gb ROM and bloat is what we call any apps that come from our carrier that you don't want or need on the ROM like stocks ,nova , sprint TV etc..
Edit: you can remove apps "bloat" with any app that will let you like titanium backup I use antek app its free on the market.

Thanks, again im sorry if i sound like such a newbie- but the evo comes with sense 1.0? i thought it was something more updated then that lol- and 2x better is a lot better! but um same question, will these roms just up and stop working one day even if i never update the sprint update? or will i be able to keep it if im happy?

Yeah the evo got stuck with sense 1.0 even with the gb update .
If what ever ROM you flash works for you you can keep it forever if you like you will need to try out a few ROMs they all work different on each evo there are a few different types if evos .
What might work good for me might not for you.

and just to recap, i wipe/factory reset the phone from the loading screen, then backup? even if i already backed up?? and then flash the phone with the new rom and kernel?

What recovery are you using ?
I recommend amon ra 2.3 if your not already .
If you already backed up your ROM from recovery "nandroid backup" then you don't need to do it again its just in case something goes wrong so you can go back to it.
Yes download the ROM from here and the kernel then wipe everything except your sd card and battery stats "you can wipe your battery stats if your battery is at a 100%" then flash the ROM and then the kernel.
If you get any fc's after first boot fix permissions if that doesn't work go back into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache and reboot that will fix most problems.
Hope that helps you out.

Superuser is an app the let you allow root to apps that need it.
You want to make a backup from recovery its called a nandroid backup I think you have clock work mod recovery you might want to switch to amon ra 2.3 you can get the link from my sig.
When you make a backup make sure to backup your wimax keys I think cwm does it on its own in ra2.3 you can pick and choose what you want to backup.
I'm not sure what radios your on but you should be good if you had 2.3 on your phone when you rooted it.
The ROM comes with a kernel but its the stock kernel give me a minute and I'll post a link to the ones that work with it.

ok, so im putting the PC36IMG.zip to my sd card, then putting phone into recovery, then putting install zip from sd card, and clicking on that PC36IMG...sound right?

For the recovery zip make sure its on the root of your sd not in any folder then boot to your bootloader not recovery you can download an app called quick boot to do that or just turn your phone off then hold down volume and power when it comes to the bootloader it will automatically scan for the update just hit volume up to except it then you can reboot the phone or go to recovery.

So if I use rom manager I dont have to go to the bootloader screen? or do i have to do both? I already went to rom manager premium, then used alternate flash and now it says current recovery RA recovery v2.3 and latest recovery Clockworkmod 5.0.2.2....
Do i do a nandroid backup after setting up amona RA?

No you don't have to flash it then I just forgot about rm and flashing it that way I don't use rm anymore only to fix permission.
Now when you go to recovery to make a backup go under backup/restore/ nand backup and select what you want to backup leave the ones that are checked then check android secure ,sdext if your sd is partitioned , and wimax I believe thats all I backup .
You don't need to backup recovery or cache .
You should also make a backup of just your wimax keys that way if you lose them in a flash you can restore just that and not have to restore a whole backup.

Thank you so much! I did it both ways anyway lol, I'm currently doing a nandroid backup for everything, then doing it juts for wimax. THen ill copy them to my computer and flash drive just incase.
Ok, so i think i decided, I'm gonna get the [ROM] Myn’s Warm TwoPointTwo - [RLS 5 - 01/07/2011] - and for the kernel im gonna flash, 4.3.4-cfs-havs-more-sbc (More Aggressive HAVS) (can u make sure that's the one you have? and does it have at least 12 hours of moderate use? i text a lot, thats about it..)
ok now can you tell me if I have the steps right please?

- Then I'm going to download the kernel 4.3.4-cfs-havs-more-sbc (More Aggressive HAVS)- and paste it to the root of my sd card.

Use mybackup root to backup apps and data then use it to restore them.
Yes it sounds like you got it wipe everything except your sd card, battery stats and screen rotation I'll post a like to a super wipe I use that you can flash to make sure you wipe everything as well.
Then flash the ROM then the kernel then reboot.
If you get any force closes go back into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache then under other run fix uid package mismatch or what ever its called that will fix permissions from recovery.

Flash this before you flash the ROM it will wipe everything for you do the wipes on your own as well.
After your all done you should download the app battery calibration and calibrate your battery to get more battery life it wipes you battery stats you can do it from recovery but you should just use the app it will tell you what to do.

[Q] Nooby Questions about Flashing/Rooting/ROMs.

So, I guess I'll begin by saying I'm new to Android. I feel so dumb saying that, but that should clear thing up a bit, as I have no clue about what "flashing" is, or "modems," and Lord help me, because "Odin" sounds like a really funny name.
So, I do have some precedents with iOS, and I know how to work with that, but I am a total noob with Android.
So now on to the Questions, there will be a few.
1) How to Root Epic 4G Touch- How safe is it? I do know I get things like Clockwork Mod, which I believe is for loading things.
2) Installing Custom ROMs- How do I "flash" these ROMs, and what exactly is flashing? I have been looking at certain ROMs, and I guess it is down to Starburst and Caulkin's.
3) Does Rooting/Installing erase the things on my phone?- I currently have my phone loaded with things, will rooting/installing ROMs delete this? How can I create backups?
4)LoS- I heard LoS happens more often on rooted phones. Is this true?
5) Kernels- What in the same hell is this?- Any best one of these out there? What do they do?
6) Tutorials for any of these?
Oh, and I'd like to say that I'm stock, running modem( can someone tell me what this is again?) EG30. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

so far its kinds controversial wether its safe or not but i think it is
2)first turn off your phone second hold power and vol up and it will turn on into clockwork mode then wipe data/factory reset from menu then wipe cache from menu. choose install zip from menu then click choose from sd. then find it and click and install.
3) rooting and unrooting won't wipe data but installing roms will
4) its been shown on both rooted and unrooted phones so we really don't know.
5)DONT PLAY WITH THESE unless you know what your doing
i think they are the #1 reasons for soft bricking phones.
i don't exactly know how to explain it but they affect how your phone does what it does
whether it over clocking of voodoo color

Thanks man, just one more question, have you rooted? I want to know from people whose phones are successfully rooted, as I don't know much about Android, and I would probably kill myself if I ****ed up such a beautiful piece of machinery.

yup im rooted and i got to say i like my phone being rooted
there are less restrictions placed and since i have had android for while now and my last phone was rooted i coulnt stand being not rooted

you can also try out the one click root option that located in the top of the dev section it works great and you dont have to us ODIN to root you phone. Just remember to read read and read you will find all your answers that way

Will this let me flash Starburst ROM?

Oh, and one more thing, this doesn't mess with phone activation, etc. Right? Or would I have to re-activate the phone or something once I flash a ROM/root?

Yes it will let you install any rom that you want as long as you also insstall clockwork mod (CWM5) it also in the instructions on how to root.
No this will not mess up your activation just start flashing roms till you find one you like. please just remember to do a backup inside cwm once you are rooted you will see an option there for it. This will let you go right back to how your phones is right now.

Yes once you flash cwm you will have a binary count but if you go on eBay and search for USB jig it will reset the binary count for you

Assuming you are using ClockWorkMod, wiping data and cache will not affect the information on your external SD card. If you select "advanced" from the CWM main menu, it will provide an option for partitioning the SD card. I haven't messed with that item, but I'm guessing it could wipe data from the external SD card.
I use the ClockWorkMod backup/recovery and it works great. I also use Titanium Backup. It will allow you to backup all of your applications and files and then restore after you've wiped everything and installed a new ROM. Titanium also requires rooting.
I started out using the Odin ROM and has some issues, so I reloaded the stock ROM and then flashed the Starburst ROM with LoST kernal. I'm having great success...great battery life and all is well.

No when you wipe data its on the phone but not pictures on the SD card. Its easy once you get going.

Why don't I have an advanced option in CWM? ROM manager says that I have the latest version (5. 0.2.7)
I tried to flash the EK02 zip and got an invalid signature file error in cwm and the installation was aborted. I did wipe data and cache beforehand. Can anyone tell me why this happened?

I personally like cwm but the newest version has bugs so i switched to twrp but i found some sites that the 2.1 version can hard brick your phone...so im wondering if twrp 2.2 is reliable?

I've been using TWRP 2.2 since it came out and have never had any problems with it. I was having problems with CWM and since I switched I have yet to have any complaints.
Give it a shot and let us know.

Is your question which one is more reliable which i think is more of a personal thing depending on your needs or loyalties where as is TWRP 2.2 reliable. Now I am not sure where and what circumstances 2.1 TWRP may have bricked a phone but since we are running 2.2 there is nothing to worry about. For as long as it has been out if there were any issues you would of heard of them by now. Try them both and you figure out which one better suits your needs

I used to use CWRM ( tried the latest touch and non-touch ) because I was familiar with it and the brick reports scared me, but I used to have a lot of issues after flashing ROMs and restoring texts, even though I did everything right.
Finally said screw it, and tried TWRP 2.2 - my issues are now mostly gone. And queuing up zips and a file manager are niice. So yea, my vote's on TWRP.
Russian smashed across the interwebz from my Galaxy SII.

The reason people were getting bricked on older versions of TWRP is due to user error. Once you wiped the system and ROM, the phone is "blank." People were then clicking the "reboot system" option without flashing a new ROM. As such, the phone couldn't boot. New version does not allow that option.
TWRP is the best in my opinion as it has several features like zip queueing (queue all of your zips at once ex: ROM, Gapps, etc...) and an onscreen keyboard for naming backups.

Only thing I don't like about TWRP is no "wipe battery stats". Other than that, TWRP is nifty but I still use darkside wipes out of habit from CWM.

Per Google themselves, wiping battery stats is not necessary and does nothing. Any perceived benefit is purely placebo.

I put CWM on my phone because it's what came with the CM9.1 ROM that I originally flashed.
After switching to a different rom such as Jedi Knight or JMT9, I found TWRP 2 to work wonders for what I need and the way I want info to be displayed. I found that with the touchscreen functions it's much easier to navigate recovery, though CWM has touchscreen functions now as well.

I prefer TWRP. It wipes everything completely clean, no need to flash TDJ's superwipe. It is also more reliable than CWM imo.

I was using CWM and switched to TWRP for this reason. No extra superwipe steps.

Cache wipe does not wipe battery stats, only cache and dalvick. Per if it helps you sleep at night, use CWM and wipe them.

I know they say wiping battery stats does nothing but so many swear by it that at this stage you might as well let them just go for it.
OP - It looks like TWRP has won in your poll, now that you have asked the question what will you do with this info?

I've tried both... never really had issues... One thing Im finding is that alot of MMS/SMS/Call Log etc. recovery tools will not work with a CWM 6 nandroid backup... Managed to get them out with Titanium Backup though, so not a problem

After switching from CWM, I've never had an issue with TWRP 2.2 so far.
But, if you decide to use CWM, I'd like to suggest: CWM 5.0.27non-touch + Darkside scripts.

TWRP is preferred
I use TWRP because of the UI and reliability. Never had an issue with it.
In some threads, OP request that you use a certain recovery whether its CWM (certain version) or TWRP so I usually keep different recoveries saved to my sd card just in case.
Plus TWRP looks better.
Go with TWRP, you will be for sure to not need those Darkside Wipes. (Reliable)
on CWM you may have to use them, depending on version (Questionable)

[Q] Differences between clockworkmod recovery amd CWM-Based recovery?

Hi all, ive had my Tmobile samsung galaxy s2 for awhile now, and i finally decided to root it (and did it successfully) a few days ago (yay)
Ive done a bit of research for what I can do while rooted, basically after CPU setting, save battery life when idle... Simple things
But ive been meaning to try flashing a ROM. But I want to make sure i know absolutely everything needed to know to flash one. I had a samsung tmobile sidekick that I was able to root and flash Gingerclone on, but I remember it had alot of little details while installing that simply missing one could seriously screw up your phone
So first off, if anyone has had the sidekick: Is flashing/ installing roms as complex on the sgh-t989 as it is on sidekick 4g?
And secondly... After rooting my galaxy, i no longer have the stock android recovery (obviously)...... Instead it is replaced with CWM-based recovery (i think 5.0.2.2?). Is there a difference between this and Clockworkmod recovert (which should show an orange screen)?
I wanted to use ROM manager but opted not to when it told me that I "needed clockworkmod recovery installed" to work.
A little help, please?

I know the general procedure of basically Wiping data, Wiping cache, Wiping delvik cache... But does the galaxy s2 require checking of all of that unmounting/mounting?

Flashed many roms, and no need for all that. Just make sure you wait the 10 minutes after flashing a rom.

FlaShing roms on this phone is so simple "that even a caveman can do it". I would also advise to ditch clockwork recovery and install twrp, also never use rom manager to flash roms. Just follow the op's instructions on what steps to follow to flash the rom successfully. Also no need to mount and unmount anything. Good luck.

I really wouldnt recommend anyone rooting a sidekick as a beginner. It was my phone, i soft bricked ot my first time. Ugh, it was such a hassle! And it left me a little traumatized to try anything on this. lol!

Here are the genreric steps to follow to flash a rom (and yes, TWRP is recommended instead of CWM):
- place the rom zip on the internal storage
- place a copy of the radio zip that you have on the internat storage (for safety reasons)
- copy Google Apps zip if it is not included in the rom (most roms do not have these included, but the dev might provide a tuned version)
- reboot phone and enter the recovery menu (hold vol up + vol down pressed while booting)
# In recovery mode
- wipe data
- wipe system
-(Use Darkside Super wipe if still on cwm 5.0.2.7 or below)
- flash rom
- flash gapps (if missing from the rom)
- wipe cache/ dalvik cache.
- reboot and wait 10 mins
- reboot and wait 1 minute
- enjoy

If you are planning on flashing a Rom on your phone of course twrp recommended and you should definitely try Jedi mind trick x2 for the t989 Hercules. It is the most stable Rom on the Samsung galaxy s2 T989 T-Mobile. The instructions above are the best instructions you should follow. And read it carefully or you will brick your device. If using twrp follow the twrp method. And if using cwm make sure you use the extra cwm steps. It is super important you follow them unless you want a fancy paper weight.

I just flashed my phone last night to the Liquid smooth rc 9. This was my first root and flash. I used titanium backup for the apps, used ROM manager to flash to the latest cwm. Here is a link I used
