Update EK02 kernel/Modem even though no LOS? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I dont have los unless i switch my kernel from stock but i like the custom kernels for speed and battery life etc..never tried any roms but i do want to try roms though the one i want like calkulin is an ek02
should i upgrade to ek02 if i dont have los? would that put me at risk for los?

EK02 fixed LoS for a lot of people.
I can't speak for everyone, but I haven't had an issue since the update.

I will just wait for some nice El13 roms or kernels? sounds good right since its a newer thing

They are out my friend... Its not like you cant switch between kernels, roms and radios... If you are worried about messing your phone up leave it alone. Would hate to see you back in here asking about did I brick my phone... It all depends on what post you read which will shift you left or right IMHO....
DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO!

well i went to calkulin : ) ..... : (

Who is running OMGB 1.1.1? I am thinking about switching kernels and wonder what is compatible with that ROM? Also, how risky is it to switch kernels. People keep telling me you can ruin your phone.
Thanks!

Are you currently using the rom and if so, what is wrong with the default kernel?

Rooting can ruin your phone. A bad flash can ruin your phone. The good thing about flashing kernels and I've flash a lot of them, you usually can go back into recovery and flash another one if your device doesn't play well with a particular one.
I am currently running CM7 and. Kernel 2.6.37.4 cm. Looking to switch today

I hear ya. I'm itching to flash it right now, but my wife and one of my sons are enroute to Orlando and I don't want to flash a rom that I'm uncertain of in case I need to contact them or vice-versa. I haven't had a "home phone" in years. We all have smartphones..lol
I went ahead and flashed this rom and then added my 3rd party apps and I must say that i am impressed. It is stable and everything appears to work as it should. I did notice a bug where when you add a pattern lock, the default lock screen no longer displays, not even after a reboot. I just finished making a nandroid backup of it and will definitely use this rom. This is shweeeet!
You can flash an AOSP kernel. The SBC kernels can ruin your phone. I am using tiamat nonsbc aosp kernel with this rom.
Thanks for the info guys! I ended up flashing OMGB rom and like it so far. Do I flash that kernel over the rom then? Do I just find the kernel in one of these threads or is it on ROM Manager?
Thanks

[Q] Need some help...

Ok I have alot going on over here on my brothers Epic 4G. First off i rooted it and is running ACS SyndicateROM Twilight Zone 1.0.4 (Malanga) EB13 build, im pretty sure you guys know exactly which ROM thats is, but anyways, he is getting horrible battery life and I was going to try to put him back stock and see what the newest updates for the Epic would be. For some reason whatever I do to try to Odin it never works but thats another story. Basically what I want to know is what ROM out there that doesnt really have alot of bells and whistles and that has great battery life that I can load up? Since I cant seem to upgrade to EC05, I guess i have to stick with a EB13 build.
I also know kernels has alot to do with the battery life as well and right now its running kernel 2.6.32.9. IDK just by looking at the kernel you know if it has bad battery life or what. I am going to try to wipe the battery stats and see how that works out.
Sorry for all the noobish questions. I am very familiar with loading ROMS and kernels and Clockwork and all that since im a ROM tester for the Droid 1, and I know things are similiar but I do see their are some differences. If someone could help me out I would greatly appreciate it.
You probably won't get much response or get a response you don't want posting in a dev section.

some roms like midnights will automatically update you to ECO05, but a good, stock rom would have to be Simply ASOP, otherwise, just flash all the other EB13 roms. there hasnt been an update to most roms in months now though

#1. There is an update.zip to change the modem, have you tried this? I am unsure of Samsung's tool as I upgraded my modem through that update.zip that was made by ACS as well I believe, look around...
#2. Go to the ACS newest ROM (3/27) it is 1.1 I believe, and they have detailed instructions on how to upgrade, as well as pretty good instructions on Kernels, I would look at the Twilight kernel that runs with ACS well, just to keep it easy for now (although there are others and no disrespect to any others). The instructions to load the new kernel and modem will be in the ACS thread, please go there and read the first 2-3 posts that give you a good rundown of the ROM, and if you really do have some techie knowledge you should be able to easily load up the newest ROM....
I know this is the wrong section, but I'd rather help than bash, next time you can play with the forums and figure out where to post please (actually not general discussion, there is a Q&A page...).
I would really recommend ACS newest ROM 1.1 it is solid and the kernel is an excellent every day driver.
You may be having trouble going back to stock with odin die to the conversion to ectension4 try and tick the re position box if you go that route.
You won't be disappointed with acs 1,1 takira(i believe)
Peace

Moved to Q&A.

What ROM are you running?

Just curious what ROM fellow flashers are running so far! I'm still stock rooted and am pretty happy with the experience although I can always use a sick custom ROM .
I know there are only a handful released so far as the devs are justttt getting warmed up so I guess everyone can just give their take on whats available so far.
*Sorry if this has already been posted, didn't see anything similar. Kill the thread if necessary!

Stock rooted with battery%+crt off mod.
Once other mods and optimizations make it into the stock, like 4in1 reboot, I'll flash that.
But so far, I'm very happy with stock.
Stock, root, no mods and most bloat removed. Was on zedo's kernel, but flashed back (got some weird issues, pretty sure it's not the kernel, but need to eliminate variables).
Working on my own kernel (learning) and will probably build my own ROM off that... if/when I get time.

Flashing Ics roms

Hi guys I'm new to the epic touch and was wondering if it is safe to flash a Ff11 from an already installed ff11 rom and how or is it necessary to restore to gingerbread before flashing the new ff11 rom. Lastly, what is the most stable ICS ROM with everything working? I tried AOKP and it had messed up video recording and bad wake up lag. Thank You

Yes it should be safe but just do yourself a favor and only flash, back, restore, wipe, etc from el26 cwm kernel/recovery. Most stable ICS rom would probably be just a stock leak or maybe calks 1.6 rom. I personally use CM9 and its good.
Thanks I did just that. A question though, why do the rooms have wake up lag... Is there a way to fix this?

Personally I wouldn't take the chance with the emmc bug. It takes like2 minutes longer but I ALWAYS flash back to el26. Just not worth chancing a brick.

All ics roms are still leaks. Some devs have been working on tweaks but no source yet to work from. Soon we hope.
I flash from EL29 there is no difference in flashing from EL26 or EL29. I have been using team venom's roms and they work great and really could be an over the air with absoultly no bugs what so ever. I use my phone fro work all day long 5 days a week and havent had the first minutes trouble.
I have flashed Multiple ROMS, and if your looking for batter life, the any ROM from Mijjz of Team Venum is definitely what you want they are all stabil. I am currently using "Mijjz Blend ICS " No Name" ROM. the Xplod Mini rom runs on a sony based kernel and works well, so if you want a differnt interface its a great choice while still keeping the battery life. Blu Kuban Rom is great if you want a variety of optional tweaks built into the ROM. There is a new Team on here called Team Rejectz they just released a new ROM that looks great, I'll be flashing that this morning, and Give you guys an update on how that turns out. I always flash back to either EL29 or EL26 before flashing a new ICS Rom.

Same here I have been using cm9 as my daily driver for the passed couple weeks and it is rock solid stable! Love ICS I cant imagine going back to Gingerbread after the ICS experience. Its alot faster, way nicer and just overall smashes gingerbread. Lol Not like IOS5-IOS6 where ya get 1 or 2 new features.. Features that Android have had since froyo..lool!

How do i use a rom with any kernel?

Hey all, i've been running through ROMs here going back and fourth trying to find the best one for me. And so far i love a couple of ROMS, but the only ROM where i get data speeds that are good is Snipers Lightweight ROM using EL29 modem and agats fl27 repack kernel. I want to be able to use this Kernel and modem on other ROMS (the blu kuban for instance), but it seems most of ROMs require a certain kernel. Is there anyway around this? so i can use whatever kernel i want on any ROM?

I don't think so. As you know, a kernel is like the base and the bridge between hardware( CPU,etc...) and apps. So if the rom isn't made for a specific kernel, the phone won't boot up
Yes you should be fine. The aroma installer included in Lightweight even has several different kernels to pick from, as they're all for ICS TouchWiz (like Blue Kuban ROM).
Now, if you're using a repack (like fi27), you won't have all the extra tweaking/over/underclocking options like you would from a custom source-built one. But if all you really care about is data speed then there should be no problem.
