Hi.
I've flashed ILT41F Google official images to my Galaxy Nexus. After initial boot, without Google Account authentication, I've noticed Books and Videos apps in the app drawer. Unfortunately, after 5 seconds they were gone. Literally. Not even in the Applications Manager, under All Apps. Do some of you actually have those apps, or all of you don't ? Has somebody seen this behavior ?

Thanks for the input. Then this may have something to do with Market locale. Awaiting further input for international users.
They should be downloadable from the Market if you don't have them.

I don't have my phone handy at the moment, but do these apps come as system apps in google's ILT41F factory images? If not, get the .apk's from someone and push them into /system/app/ if your rooted. Then they can't uninstall (at least that is my guess).

I haven't checked if they come as system apps in official factory images. I don't necessarily need them, I just wanted to know what the heck happened to them when they disappeared, because it is strange.
I'm currently in the stage of verifying what's wrong or not with my installation, so that's how I came across this problem.
u r not the only one...i noticed the same thing....as such, i dug deeper in using root explorer and found that the apk is still inside system/apps/
so apparently, there's some technical mumbo jumbo in there that restricts non-US users to see...let alone access this apps....
if you try to side load the apk, it will actually prompt for overwrite, rather than install, suggesting the apps exists and is installed, just not visible...(even to titanium backup apparently)..
somebody with more technical knowledge than myself needs to investigate this...,

actually. i think the apps are 'freezed'....due to locations.
if u r rooted, u can use titanium backup to 'defroze' it..that's what i did.

It's actually a pretty good question.I've run quite a few different roms in the last month or so and even though I back everything up,the Market seems to lose apps that I've purchased from time to time.Would be nice to know if there's a way to retrieve them online or if we just need to keep buying them over and over.

Yes seriously. You answer was anything but. I want to where they are stored. Hitting the downloads tab shows a list of them, it doesn't show WHERE.
Download Astro File Browser and use the built-in search feature. Make sure it is scanning the whole system and not just your SD card.
This should tell you where they are downloaded and stored.
This question is highly ambiguous. You may want to refine.
I think he means, if you wipe and install a new ROM, the first time you go into the market, it will remember the apps you DID have installed.

Exactly. This is what is elusive. Maybe I'm completely wrong and they are stored on SkyNet I mean Google.
I am pretty sure they are attached to your google account. So they are stored on skynet, in some dark dungeon of servers they have 1000 feet under ground
Actually, I think this is a two part deal. The apps you have purchased are associated with your google account. Free apps and trials have a local market link associated with them. This link can become corrupted and titanium backup has the capability to restore those links. Running a logcat while executing the restore market links process may point you in the right direction.

They are definitely associated with your google account. My market kept telling me I had a **** load if apps on my phone...no mater how many times I wiped, they still showed as installed on my phone. I created a new google account and bam..fixed the issue when I signed in with the new account. Its the weirdest thing.

indeed. this seems not only a evo specific "issue". a friend has a hero and was complaining how to uninstall apps since there is a sprint tab in her market. i told her to press menu and then to downloads since she isnt a geek.

After factory resetting my GS3, the phone does not automatically downloads all my apps from google play but I have to go in and click one by ONE......
I have hundreds of Apps and it will take very long. How come the phone does not do it anymore. It use to do it every time i reset.
what am I missing?

Did you have the the Google backup enabled when you first setup your device?

If this is true sir you are a hero! I've been going through phones and OS on those phones a lot lately and installing one by one is really pissing me off. Google backup is a joke. One time in about 50 has google re-installed my apps after a reset.

That's why I only rely on multiple local backups. Cloud backups aren't reliable enough yet.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this only UPDATES installed apps without user intervention, doesn't actually install an app after a restore correct.. if you've restored how does it know which apps to install?

I've never seen a local backup that will do anything more than install a specific version of an app. I want the market app this is up to date and for my current OS. Also I want them to keep receiving updates. If I backed up my apps on 2.3.3 GB Inspire 4G they wouldn't do me much good on ICS GSIII. For that matter some of my ICS apps may trip up JB. I wish I could go on google play, put checkmarks next to the apps I want and have play load them. I hate going through 3 or four screens to install each app. It's as annoying as User Access Control on Win Vista/7.

I'd like to know this too. I used to own the sgs2 and it would piss me off to have to pick and choose my old apps again. But sometimes Google play would do it automatically for me.
Now when using the SGS3 with cm10, it's been pretty good at automatically re downloading my apps. I just need to make sure it stays that way, but I don't know how.

Google Sync picks up most apps for you. Off course you need to have Google Sync enabled.
As far as data and other complete backup of apps and new versions of the apps you should purchase TiBu. Titanium Backup a must have for Android users.
If the ROM you flash has the option to "restore from Google" while entering your Google login during initial setup of the ROM, then all your apps will be restored.
If you don't get that option, then they won't be restored.
There is no secret setting in Google Play to get the apps to auto-install after the fact.

I just use TiBu, never had a problem and can select which Apps/Data I want to restore.

There should be a file manager pre-installed with all gnex roms. Don't you think?
Google pretty much realized that 3rd party file managers will always trump any anemic, non-updated stock file manger they stuff into their builds.

Waste data plans? You would have just downloaded a rom on WiFi I assume. Boot it and install what you want.
Or manually add the apk you want into the ROM, system/app prior to flashing it.
There is no problem.
Google wants Google to be your file manager, and the cloud to be your storage. So much easier to sift through your data and monetize the info.
Google also fully realizes that if ROMs had file managers, it would quickly become obvious that you don't need gapps or even a Google account to fully utilize your phone.
And it wouldn't be long after that that you realize apps should be available somewhere besides the Playstore, like any other version of Linux. And people might start a SourceForge or similar site for Android.
So Google doesn't like file managers, or sdcards, or anything else that prevents them from monetizing your data, because that's their whole business model.

That is crazy talk man.
Google has nothing against file managers. It has nothing against using your device as plug and play drive either He is talking about custom ROMs anyways. Google has no control over them. If you don't want to use a Google account on your phone then don't.
People are aware apps are elsewhere. You got third party appstores like amazon and others and android period has a reputation for people pirating apps/side loading apps etc.
The reason nexus devices went away from SD cards is well documented. That is not the reason.
Googles businesses model has nothing to do with your data on your devices.

Have followed a few guides and got some great info from XDA so trying to give a little back if I can
From what I have done I have found no ill effects that I have noticed so far, all fairly obvious choices so early on, but will get braver as I get more used to the handset and I'm sure others have been more adventurous than me and can help bulk the list up a bit and we can do away with a whole bunch of bloat to get a smoother ride from out G3. Some of these I froze as I prefer other 3rd party apps.

I think you should do a different list for the Google apps, the main attention people will give this thread is to find out what LG apps they can freeze and remove, most people will not be interesting in removing the Google apps from their devices.

They do different things. Freezing them is like uninstalling them - they are gone and won't work at all but can be retrieved by unfreezing. Greenifying them just hibernates them but they work as normal.

Also in system/vendor/app. Found some stuff in there that tibu couldn't get rid of. Here's most of what I froze. If it's not in my list of frozen apps I deleted it lol

I've noticed that the system doesn't allow you to disable everything if you're not rooted so maybe anything you are allowed to disable is safe to disable.

And how is everything working out after having disabled all those 3 weeks ago? Any anomalies or bad experiences? So far your screenshots give the best list of the removable apps (I'm completely new to LG so I don't know about their stock stuff), and I'd love to remove them but I'm afraid to experiment without a fully working recovery to restore nandroid.

Awesome, thanks for the quick feedback! I just got a notification about a new downloadable software update (will not do it ofc), I suppose freezing the software update app will mean no more notifications and to setbacks either?

Correct. I have mine frozen to avoid receiving update notifications. Also this is good until you find out if the new update is rootable. If its not then its good to stick with the current software.

My list is almost this one of yours. Had to unfreeze some of those because it made the home screen very lagged.
Everything Google uninstalled or frozen for over 2 weeks. No problems or complaints.

So I froze most of these. Will it free up memory or do I have to delete them? Kinda scared to delete them. I have nandroid backup, just hate to possibly have to restore when the phone is running good.
Hello, so recently I've been dealing with pop up ads on my phone. I factory reset the phone and they were gone, but now it's having ads again when I don't even have an app open. I've tried virus scanners and nothing detected. Is there a way to figure out what file is causing this?

I had that same issue last week. Are they popping up though chrome or firefox? It was a rogue app on my part but for you it looks like its something else. Since you already factory reset the phone, you might as well download the latest build and "flash-all". After that you should not have any problems as it completely wipes the device.
If you goto your battery settings does it show an app that may be causing ads?

So it pops up randomly not just using chrome. A few minutes ago I was in the middle of a Clash Royale Game and an add popped up. I recently downloaded a QR reader from the play store and I think that's when it started again.
I deleted the app, but it's been still going on. That's why I went to use the anti virus/malware apps, but they found nothing.
Is there anyway to fix or find what is doing it without factory resetting?

No, nothing shows up on my battery setting.
check the root directory for any strange folders that should not belong there and delete those. I had some that were like 5489399fgjjll and crap. Those are a sure sign there is malware on your phone

download kaspersky and do a scan , it should clean whatever is doing that.

UPDATE:
i may have found the culprit, it's the qrcode scanner app, i may need a few hour to verify this
Just did Kaspersky and nothing found. Another $3 wasted ...
@hketola: Kapersky isn't trustworthy IMO. Try Malwarebytes instead.
If you have Adaway installed, go into the settings and check for Adaware, it'll tell you what apps and what kind of ads they push
I just had the same problem and it seemed to be caused by the app store. So I read all your efforts and then took a look in my settings and here's what I did that resolved the issues: settings < apps & notifications < advanced < Special app access < display over other apps < google play services < switch to "not allowed"

I fixed a similar issue on a friends phone. When Ad appears, swipe up (assuming pill gesture on Android 9) and you get the recents screens. The current app (app showing ad) icon will be at top of the screen preview. Press and hold on the icon until a context menu appears and select App Info. Now you know which app is popping ads up.

It's that ****ing google ads that you can opt out of, but they force the others ads on you.
This is an invasion of privacy you pay all this money for your personal phone and they force content on you whether you like it or not.
I'm thinking about downgrading my phone and operating systems?

Trying to get past the 10 post filter aye? That's what it looks like based upon the fact you replied to a post that's been dead for six months plus.
Now I won't engage with your political rant because this isn't political. You own the hardware, but Google owns the software, especially the Google apps. The ads are Google's means of recouping development costs of Android.
Now, if you don't want ads but want to use Google apps, you install and run Blokada. It works on virtually everything, except YouTube. Or you use a version of Android that doesn't include Google apps.
If neither option appeals to you, try and find a dumbphone, because Apple is worse.
