There should be a file manager pre-installed with all gnex roms. Don't you think?
Google pretty much realized that 3rd party file managers will always trump any anemic, non-updated stock file manger they stuff into their builds.

of course we can install apks, sideloaded or through the markets(s). waste time? it takes seconds. astro file manager is nice, so is root explorer(if you need a root file manager.. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.metago.astro&hl=en

Waste data plans? You would have just downloaded a rom on WiFi I assume. Boot it and install what you want.
Or manually add the apk you want into the ROM, system/app prior to flashing it.
There is no problem.
Google wants Google to be your file manager, and the cloud to be your storage. So much easier to sift through your data and monetize the info.
Google also fully realizes that if ROMs had file managers, it would quickly become obvious that you don't need gapps or even a Google account to fully utilize your phone.
And it wouldn't be long after that that you realize apps should be available somewhere besides the Playstore, like any other version of Linux. And people might start a SourceForge or similar site for Android.
So Google doesn't like file managers, or sdcards, or anything else that prevents them from monetizing your data, because that's their whole business model.

That is crazy talk man.
Google has nothing against file managers. It has nothing against using your device as plug and play drive either He is talking about custom ROMs anyways. Google has no control over them. If you don't want to use a Google account on your phone then don't.
People are aware apps are elsewhere. You got third party appstores like amazon and others and android period has a reputation for people pirating apps/side loading apps etc.
The reason nexus devices went away from SD cards is well documented. That is not the reason.
Googles businesses model has nothing to do with your data on your devices.

Edit. He doesn't directly mention custom ROMs . But when you mention toolkits and all ROMs I am fairly certain op is not talking about factory ROMs

Android Market
It's actually a pretty good question.I've run quite a few different roms in the last month or so and even though I back everything up,the Market seems to lose apps that I've purchased from time to time.Would be nice to know if there's a way to retrieve them online or if we just need to keep buying them over and over.

Yes seriously. You answer was anything but. I want to where they are stored. Hitting the downloads tab shows a list of them, it doesn't show WHERE.
Download Astro File Browser and use the built-in search feature. Make sure it is scanning the whole system and not just your SD card.
This should tell you where they are downloaded and stored.
This question is highly ambiguous. You may want to refine.
I think he means, if you wipe and install a new ROM, the first time you go into the market, it will remember the apps you DID have installed.
Where is that stored?

Exactly. This is what is elusive. Maybe I'm completely wrong and they are stored on SkyNet I mean Google.
I am pretty sure they are attached to your google account. So they are stored on skynet, in some dark dungeon of servers they have 1000 feet under ground
Actually, I think this is a two part deal. The apps you have purchased are associated with your google account. Free apps and trials have a local market link associated with them. This link can become corrupted and titanium backup has the capability to restore those links. Running a logcat while executing the restore market links process may point you in the right direction.
.....
Frank...
They are definitely associated with your google account. My market kept telling me I had a **** load if apps on my phone...no mater how many times I wiped, they still showed as installed on my phone. I created a new google account and bam..fixed the issue when I signed in with the new account. Its the weirdest thing.

Hi.
I've flashed ILT41F Google official images to my Galaxy Nexus. After initial boot, without Google Account authentication, I've noticed Books and Videos apps in the app drawer. Unfortunately, after 5 seconds they were gone. Literally. Not even in the Applications Manager, under All Apps. Do some of you actually have those apps, or all of you don't ? Has somebody seen this behavior ?

I don't have my phone handy at the moment, but do these apps come as system apps in google's ILT41F factory images? If not, get the .apk's from someone and push them into /system/app/ if your rooted. Then they can't uninstall (at least that is my guess).

I haven't checked if they come as system apps in official factory images. I don't necessarily need them, I just wanted to know what the heck happened to them when they disappeared, because it is strange.
I'm currently in the stage of verifying what's wrong or not with my installation, so that's how I came across this problem.
u r not the only one...i noticed the same thing....as such, i dug deeper in using root explorer and found that the apk is still inside system/apps/
so apparently, there's some technical mumbo jumbo in there that restricts non-US users to see...let alone access this apps....
if you try to side load the apk, it will actually prompt for overwrite, rather than install, suggesting the apps exists and is installed, just not visible...(even to titanium backup apparently)..
somebody with more technical knowledge than myself needs to investigate this...,
---------- Post added at 03:06 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:00 PM ----------

actually. i think the apps are 'freezed'....due to locations.
if u r rooted, u can use titanium backup to 'defroze' it..that's what i did.

Dunno why it's not included, my guess is that Google might have the answer to that or whoever put together the gApps zip file.
And as to your second question:
Maybe try the search function? ...or Google it?
I'm a nice guy today, so I did the footwork for you...
gMusic APK
Certain ROMS (codename android being one of them) are adhering more strictly to Google's policy regarding Gapps and have removed music, maps etc so the zip won't contain them. Other zips on the other hand will.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Because it's not officially available in all markets, so including them with an internationally-available gapps package circumvents Google's regional restrictions. If it's available in your market, you can just get it from the marketplace anyways.

If they were adhering to Google's policy, they wouldn't be packaging Google Apps at all. You are not allowed to redistribute them, in or out of a rom. You are allowed to back them up from your own personal device. Thats it.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/What_is_CyanogenMod
Until version 4.1.11.1, CyanogenMod included several proprietary apps such as Gmail, Maps & the Android Market, which are included with stock versions of Android, but are not licensed for distribution with 'custom' firmwares, such as CyanogenMod. Legally, Cyanogen was not allowed to include these apps in CyanogenMod.
Google sent Cyanogen a Cease and Desist letter demanding he stop distribution of these apps and Cyanogen ceased all development until a solution could be found.
The reactions of many CyanogenMod users was predictably hostile, with some claiming that Google's legal threats hurt their own interests and violated their informal corporate motto to "Do No Evil". After extensive media coverage (PC World, The Register, The Inquirer, Ars Technica, The H, ZDNet, Gigaom, and eWeek) and a statement from Google clarifying its position Google and Cyanogen negotiated an agreement in which Cyanogen could continue development on his firmware as long as he did not include Google's proprietary "Google Experience" components.
To work around the licensing issues, it was further agreed that the proprietary Google apps may be backed-up from the stock firmware on the device and then re-installed onto CyanogenMod releases without infringing copyrights.

Correct. While even CM uses Google Apps packages, they will never admit that they are the ones that put them together
I am not saying that I don't do the same, just explaining that Google is within their right to bring our world crashing down around us if they felt so inclined.
The "legal" thing to do is to use a script to backup your current Google Apps so that you can move them to your own rom. Amon Ra recovery does (or used to) do this and I think CM has a script somewhere as well.

Seriously, this is the only thing that makes me root. I used to root for a whole bunch of other stuff, but I've been getting so busy as of late, where flashing just has not been feasible for my time.
On the iPhone, you are able to go into the iCloud settings menu, and tick on or off each and every app+appdata that you want to backup. This puts the data in the cloud, but that part I don't really care about, I'm fine putting the backup data on my 32gb worth of storage. The drive support would be an excellent bonus.
Alas, I don't think it'll happen for a long while... and therefore god bless Titanium Track & his amazing backup app. Although sometimes problematic, it is a handy app.
Google I/O is in a few weeks. Maybe they'll announce something similar.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
The thing is, Google already does this, the issue being hardly any apps take advantage of it, and there's no transparency about which apps do and don't do it.
Since they already do it, I'd hope they just clarify and setup a standard for it.
Yeah, like was said earlier, Google provides a way for apps to include data as a part of the backup that is used when restore. I'm not sure why app developers don't take advantage of it however.

Big disadvantage of not having a function similar to icloud
Hi
I love the icloud feature on iOS. If you get a new iphone or ipad, you spend 2 minutes getting everything transfered from old phone/tablet to the new one. Making it very easy to upgrade to newer models.
Why doesn't Android/Samsung give the same functionality? Now I am afraid, if I loose my Galaxy S3, I loose all the settings/apps and stuff. I know there are some rather complicated ways to root and back up, but I want an easy method, where the phone makes a cloud back up, everytime it is connected to wifi, and plugged in, just like iCloud.
In Galaxy S3, there is a feature called device backup with samsung account (which cupposibly should do the same thing), but it keeps coming with some connectivity error.
Could/would anyone help me with this?
Thanks..
Keeping it real.

Also android cant do that because all the phones are different, with different incompatibilities with software. Apple phones are easy because apple makes the phones and the software. Where as android, google makes the OS while the manufacturers make the phones. This is why some get features like that but only for their phones. Android is fragmented.
Android also downloads and installs the apps you had installed before if you choose " backup with Google and restore". I think That's what it says.. All you have to do is sign in with your gmail account. Same with contacts.

As has been mentioned before, this already exists. Google has had it for a while now. The problem is that app developers have to implement it. If there is an app you want to take advantage of that, the only solution would be to harass the app developer until they add it.
This already exist. The reason why no one really knows about it is because Google doesn't brag about it.

How many people use apps like Lookout that scan your phone and supposedly offer ant-virus protection? Are they even necessary?
Don't think you'll find many that do. Other than corporate security reasons. All of is crackflashers don't stay on the same system long enough to warrant such a measure
Sent from my phone using xda premium.
I like lookout for the scream feature....my wife loses her phone all the time and if I send the code through lookouts website the phone makes a loud siren sound even when on silent or vibrate. As far as the antivirus I really dont use it
I use lookout not for the scanning feature, but for the lost phone/lock/wipe features. You never know when you might need it.
Not absolutely, i use Eset Mobile on the N4, used it for many years allready om my pc`s. Better safe than sorry. And always look at the permissions you are about to give to an app when installing.
I used Lookout for 2 years on my HTC Desire then decided to uninstall it about 6 months ago. Can't say I've missed it.
I've not put it on my N4.
Common sense, and checking permissions is much more important than an anti virus imo. Google play store already has the bouncer that scans all the apps. Most of these malware apps that users install come from people not willing to cough up a few dollars for apps and getting said apps from third party sites, and torrents often repackaged with malware, and imo it looks good on them. Support the devs, don't be so cheap, and pay for apps (not directing this at anyone here, just saying). Use the Playstore, or somewhere reputable like XDA and check permissions, there's no reason a wallpaper would need access to your contact list and private info ect. Never used an antivirus on a phone and i likely never will.
i use lookout because i need to install apks from other sources..
i need to install apks from other sources because google play does not allow apks like adaway..
i buy apps from google play.. but ads? no way..
