Any devs want to try porting Smart Actions from the RAZR to our beloved GN <3 ?
I purchased Tasker but it's just not quite the same.
I'm sure a lot of people would be pretty excited to have the app on the nexus; it's a pretty f***in sweet app ;p
bump .. nobody? not even curious or considering trying.. or have any thoughts on the matter ? This really is an amazing app ...

Ha! My first thanks, haha. Didn't really deserve it though..
I thought Tasker had more features than SmartActions. From what I've seen though SmartActions is more intuitive and user friendly. Is that why you prefer it?

Many reasons, and the community have asked for Smart Actions on various devices a lot.
so what is the difference between the 2??
Look into Locale. A lot of the plugins are cross-compatible. It's a slightly different mindset (one that I actually prefer), and IMO the interface is more intuitive. Tasker profiles seem to be more event based (e.g. triggered when I connect to wifi) whereas Locale is more state based (e.g. triggered while I'm connected to wifi).

Heard of it, dunno why I haven't looked into it yet..hm
Thanks, will check it out for sure
Tasker is a massive pain in the ass lol
Edit: Gonna stick with Tasker for now, Locale seems to be too basic (lacks a lot of functions/conditions)
SmartActions .. really jelly of the RAZR for that one thing lol
anyone tried Llama? Still my favourite...
There's also Settings Profiles … it supports Locale-plugins for some weeks now.
last shot at this before I let the thread fade away
...Any word on the possibility of a SmartActions port
thanks.
I too would be interested in smart actions.
I've tried llama, juice defender, and a couple other similar ones. I want rules like when my home wifi gets disconnected, turn on BT (to work in the car), turn off wifi to save power. Once I'm at work turn off BT, and turn wifi back on. The issue I have is llama isn't accurate enough. By the time it triggers I'm half way to work because of the cell tower distances.
Im looking into this as well. I've tried tasker and Im not willing to shell out more money for apps that probably wont work.
I want a few things:
When Im home I want wifi to automatically turn off, when I leave home I want it to turn off.
When I am home I want 3/4g to switch to 2g, and back to 3g/4g when I leave home.
Also want gps to turn on, on its own when I launch mapsm/nav/places.
Any ideas??
Tasker has failed me on more than one occasion and it's just too unreliable to use daily.
Seriously is it that hard to port over an app?
Why don't you just use tasker, you can do almost anything with it. Smart Actions is extremely limiting. Anyone who roots their phone and is truly a power user uses tasker.
If you would like i can make you some profiles.

That'd be cool
But I've set up a few profiles and sometimes my mobile data wouldnt be turned back on, or my brightness, or sync..etc ... and i wouldnt notice until the next day...
Thats not good..
You might need to set up exit actions? When the task finishes it runs an action on exit. ie turn back on your data after the time period is over.

Yeah, I did.. thats what I meant.. sometimes, the exit action wouldn't be activated and so I would be stuck on Data-off or sync-off .. etc
weird, cant say ive ever heard of or had that problem unless maybe you disabled the notification icon at which point the OS might kill it.

Write a Mortscript to do it.
ehh, that's a bit too difficultf or me..
I think Don'tForget will do what you are wanting.
You can get it from http://dashapps.googlepages.com

Bupahs, that's so nice of you. Can you set it to from 9PM to 8AM? It's just a text script, right? So I can modify it later? Thanks!
I think this should fit the bill nicely http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Communications/SleepWell-32308.shtml
There's a pair of programs i use(d). Both by the same company. One will schedule automated events (alarms, shut-off, etc) and the other will record macros.
Essentially you record a macro (choose start at home screen) and work your way into comm manager as if you normally would, and this device will remmeber what you did.
Next you would set an autorun in the second program.
A few things i have noticed..
Doesn't function perfectly when starting in LOCK mode, so you have to fake an unlock by pressing the unlock key and Z, then just press the HANGUP button to make sure it is on the home screen
You have to leave time considering for LAG with your phone, i would give it a good couple of seconds more than it actually takes for each step to make sure it doesnt mess anything up....realize that it isnt remembering your destination, just your keypresses and pauses...
Program has a VERY AKWARD and barely legible font, so trust it!
The auto-run program comes packed with a bunch of automatically programmed alarms and events, so delete them when you install
The names of these programs are:
MacroRecorder and AutoFlight ...both are by CyberHorse i believe

Off topic but does anyone know a free app that let you schedule when the phone turns on/off?
I think it's almost impossible since the phone isn't running anything when it's off.

I can define the hour to turn on airplane mode... how about turn OFF airplane mode? How this software knows when I want my phone back? I couldn't find any settings to it, or am I missing something
I think I got the picture... you define one setting to turn off, and then define another setting to turn on. Is it? Am I right?

There are plenty of apps that perform this and much more, I use G-Profile, this can be configured to turn the phone (GSM part) off (ie put in Flight Mode) at specific times of the day on specific days.
I have mine to put the phone in flight mode at around midnight each night, and then turn it back on again in the morning, I have two sets of these, one for during the week and one for weekends (like to get up later on the weekends )
This app is completely free but if you like it you can donate to the author, there are other apps like this some of them free some not.
Have a search through these forums and you will find quite a few.
Cheers

Hi,
My HTC Desire should be arriving in the next few days and I've seen some posts about wifi, bluetooth, gps, 3g being on 24/7. I don't really want this if possible as I prefer to be able to control my connectivity.
The only things I want to update automatically are my gmail account, the weather app and maybe football scores on weekends. Is it possible to just set these items to update every 20mins and have the 3G turn itself off in the mean time?
There is an android power widget which looks great and has 4 great buttons to simply turn wifi, bluetooth, gps and autosynch on or off, oh and one for brightness control. As for 3g, its been advised to leave 3g on nowadays as the power consumption is barely more than gprs so really I wouldn't worry about that.

I hope so, I got a great deal on it too and although I had an iphone for a couple of weeks, it'll be my first upgrade in about 4 years since getting my SE w810i. The icing on the cake will be when it'll be possible to use the camera flash as a torch as it's something I find really handy on the w810i.
Hmm I'm not so sure about that. These LED's are seriously bright, excellent for flash! I think maybe even if a mod is written to enable an I/O for them as a torch that it might not be good for the LED's, otherwise I'm sure HTC would have enabled it themselves.
Just my opinion, I could easily be wrong.
A bit of topic here but Im getting my Desire tomo!!!!
Need to debrand it as I dont want Orange apps all over the phone.
I was hoping HTC add bluetooth 3.0 to the desire as the new Samsung phones have it.

I aint got a cheap card laying around ha ha
I made a mistake and bought a 8GB card and now if Desire dont get rooted it would have beena waste as I wont fill it up with movies or music.
I will either send it back and buy if it gets rooted or Il use the 4GB card that comes with the phone as a gold card.

I guess we'll see. I only use it for a short time on my w810i and it's always been fine, I'd be surprised if it could damage them. I've prepared myself it not having one, it'd just be a big bonus if it did that's all.
Turning mobile internet traffic off..
Hi!
I don't think this is exactly what you want, but I find this feature useful (as I don't need/want my data syncing all the time)..
The widget that was talked about in previous posts is great, for controlling wifi, bluetooth brightness etc. BUT I found that the sync(on/off)-option will only affect the "default" apps (as gmail/mail, friendstream, weather etc) and not the podcast app I use (it would still sync etc. But then I found this:
If you hold down the "power button" (for some dumb reason they refer to it as the "shutdown button" in the [at least Swedish] manual, but that's not the main use) you get the menu to choose to turn off the phone, sound, airplane mode etc.
At the bottom of the list (I missed this at first) there is an option "mobile network" (with the subtext: "Turn off mobile internet"). And that will effectively turn off all 3g/data-connections (don't think it will affect wifi).
It's manual and you would have to turn it on, make the updates and turn it off yourself, but it's an option..
As the option to turn off 3g-/mobile data-connections clearly exists, it shouldn't be impossible to make a app that can do it on a scheduled basis..
Funny.. as you posted that I was reading this post with interest:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6129807&postcount=6
there are widgets preinstalled into the sense UI so you want have problem disabling and re enabling the internet. either WiFi either 3g/gprs
So after the screen goes off, the wifi automatically goes to sleep hence making those apps which can send toast/tile notifications like Flory and various twitter apps practically useless. Any work around?
Keep it plugged in.
Um...you just realized that? It puts wifi on standby (basically turns it off) when it goes to sleep, unless you are charging, in which case, the wifi remains connected. Data, on the other hand, does not have this problem, and will persist, despite the phone going to sleep/lockscreen.
I would also like a workaround for this... I don't own a data plan, and I'm pretty much always near some wifi connection...
thanks!
There is no work around. It is a 'feature' by design so that you won't ended up with a battery drained phone. Your only hope is complain loudly to Microsoft.

Well if you're connected to WiFi but its in sleep mode, data doesnt just turn on. It will for some things, but I found out that for some games that have push notifications, they just dont happen in that situation. The 3g stays sleeping with the WiFi. I only get emails in this situation.

I thought the shutter sound was become of some law saying you have to have it on. Weird thing though, that law ain't in the US...I read that sht on cracked where they were talking about countries saying you have to leave the shutter sound on and that's to prevent people from getting away with sticking their phone under a girls skirt and taking a picture. Normally I'd be like "man, cracked is just making stuff up again" but I've been following that site for 3 years and read everything and can tell the joke articles from the legit ones.
And they probably dont have that many options because they dont want to see a lot of people complaining about battery life. Because if you google anything android related, you'll get a bunch of battery life threads and complaint. so they are just defaulting settings that offer the best battery life and they are getting rid of the option to change those settings. that way nobody can post a bunch of threads complaining about battery life and by that not happening, when you search anything windows mobile related you'll see more threads about its features than bad battery life.
And yes, if WiFi never slept, it would be using more power than the disconnected 3G option it defaults to.
having wifi turn off automatically completely defeats the purpose of background notifications for apps like twitter/facebook or any other IM since there wont be any wifi connection for them to use if the phone is in sleep mode. Not everyone has unlimited cellular data. This is just really stupid.

maybe they should have an option to change it - but it should default to the current settings as only a handfull of people won't have a data plan.

Wow, that's just weird. How come so many compact digital cameras can have the shutter sound removed then? It doesn't really make sense... anyway, I saw in the Reg Tricks topic a way to turn it off, will probably do after I get the NoDo (in a year maybe? hehehe)
Back to topic: sure the default should be the same as it is now, but give me the option to change it, and when I select it, give me a big warning telling me that this will destroy my battery life. Then I know what to expect (ok, I would already know, but many people wouldn't...)

Yep, cause changing the default search in IE from Google to Bing, where it should be, will certainly degrade my battery life.
The options are there because Microsoft have no clue what they're doing.

Fantastic... Normally, though, that's true for "bugs," not "problems."
Well, I was unable to find any information one way or the other; this seems a lesser priority for many users. If anybody in the thread has updated, please let us know!
When I'm in my car, I have my GN mounted on a vent, and plugged into power. I'll often use this to check traffic with Google Maps, or for whatever reason, would like to keep the display on (preferrably full power since it's not running off the battery), and not dim after the preset time. I have yet to find a way to do this.
I have gone into Developer Settings, and enabled the "Stay Awake" when plugged into power, but this does not prevent the screen from dimming after the preset time. So this doesn't accomplish what I want.
On my prior Touch Pro 2, there was a simple setting - keep display on, full brightness, when plugged into power. Seems like a no-brainer to have this feature, but I'll be darned if I can find it.
Any ideas? Or Apps that will provide this functionality?
Thanks.

I think screebl might help. Not 100% sure that it will though
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Thanks. As you said, it doesn't seem Screebl will do what I'm wanting.
There are a few other Apps, such as "Stay Awake" where you can configure it to keep the display on whenever a specified app or apps are running. I guess this might be an option.
But seriously, this seems to be a major omission in Android. I understand why one might want the display to auto-dim (although I can just turn it off when I want, so even this is questionable). But if it's plugged into power, surely the user should have a readily available option to keep the display on. For example, a "Never" option in the screen that has the various timeout options.
I'm new to Android - is there really no straightforward way of doing this??
Bump..
Still hoping for a straightforward way to keep the display at full power when connected to my car charger.
Thanks.
Widgetsoid has as one of its display switches to keep the display always on, and it does work. So I made a 1x1 widget that has that one switch, and use it when I want the screen to stay on. Not elegant, but functional.
Thanks for the suggestion; I'll check it out.
I'm still somewhat surprised that this pretty basic functionality isn't built into the OS itself, or that there aren't ready-made Apps to implement this.

Yes, I'm a first timer with Android, but I still do my research before posting. Did you actually read my initial post or the Subject title?
I have already enabled this setting. Yes, it does keep the screen 'awake' but it still dims after the timeout in Display Settings.
My post is how to keep the screen at normal brightness when plugged into power
I read your post. I agree, it is annoying. I have not found a solution to it and it has bugged me for years while in the car. I have had 4 android phones and it has been the same on all of them so it is not an individual phone thing, it is an android thing. My best suggestion is while in the car to have navigation turned on, that keeps the screen fully lit. I would think that some enterprising developer could delve into how the navigation mode keeps the phone at full power and come up with an app to do the same.

Thanks.
I've been looking at a few Apps (Screen On, Screen Timeout Widget, KeepScreen), but there are questions about each of them, uncertain compatibility with ICS, etc.
I did discover that when I had a Video playing (podcast through BeyondPod), the display did stay undimmed while I was plugged into Power. Navigation also works this way. Really crazy that this isn't an available option in the OS.
This worked on my old Droid, haven't tested on my Galaxy Nexus yet -- but hopefully the app is ICS compatible: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.probeez.liteprofiles&hl=en
Setting Profiles Lite is limited to one rule -- so make your one rule this: When charging, screen timeout=never (since this actually changes the screen timeout on the basic level, instead of the workaround that the Dev Settings option triggers).
(The full version of Setting Profiles will of course also do this, and I'm sure you can also do this with Tasker.)
