[Q] Recovery help needed - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm in a bit of a pickle and need some guidance. This may be a bit long but it'll all tie together. I have searched and read through a ton of threads but nothing quite seemed to work. I am fairly computer savvy and had no issues rooting the phone and messing around with it but I'm stumped.
I had some minor issues with my rooted EVO running Ava Froyo back in April before I left the country (random FC on certain processes). I sent the phone home as it won't work in the Middle East and asked that the wife use it and keep the apps up to date. Well, surprise no such luck I think she turned it on before she sent it to me to make sure I have no voice mail and that was it. Fast forward to a few days ago when I received the phone in preparation for going home to the States for the holidays and attempted to update apps and such. It updated a few but I'm getting all sorts of Force Closes and now I can't download anything, Android Market, App Brain, attachments, etc. I need to get the phone sorted and updated in the next week or I'll be SOL.
Here's what I've got so far:
the phone is rooted - S-off
the backup I had must have gotten corrupted so I can't flash anything
For some reason CWM is no longer installed and can't install because when I was able to connect via wifi it won't download (server error)
When I boot to recovery I get the phone with the red triangle. Vol Up and PWR button get me to the next screen but I can't do anything from there.
I can't seem to locate all of the latest PC36IMG.zip files, the ones I have don't seem to work
I'm sure there is some critical info I'm leaving out but my head hurts.
I have limited connectivity and limited bandwidth so it makes downloading anything larger than 10mb problematic. It's possible but the stars must align.
The goal is to fix whatever the problem is, flash CM7, update everything so I can can use it on leave in about a week. I'm hoping all the really smart Android folks can point me in the right direction.

I've attached Amon Ra 3.08 to this post. This recovery should be able to restore both CWM and Amon Ra nandroid backups. Good luck!

That file did it, thanks. All the ones I had must have either been old or corrupted.
Flashed CM7, totally different than anything I've ever tried before. It's totally stripped down but has tons of tunability. I do need to get Android Market installed so I can sync all the apps in my account.

Glad I could help, ibcrusn! If you need help getting the Market, I've attached the latest gapps for CM7.

Im having the same issue and i downloaded your amon ra app. Do i unzipp the file or how does this work

rename to PC36IMG.zip and flash in the bootloader

Sounds stupid how do i flash as the bootloader.

Reboot while holding Power+volume down
Then it should ask you if you like to update, volume up for yes then again for reboot. Then boot into your new recovery.

I am posting this becuase people kind of asked for it, although not so politely.
It's stock with root, therefore i will not be supporting it. I've done nothing to it.
It is not deodexed, or zipaligned, or anything else.
Flash in heimdall and wipe after, as usual.
Enjoy.

What Heimdall version did you use to get it flashed?
I tried latest version and I get "header contained an invalid file size." error

After you have downloaded the zip, extract it into it's separate files. Then use Heimdall 1.1.1 (frontend) and put the individual files in the right boxes. Put your tab in download mode (volume down/power on) and flash.
If you want to add dsb9938's overclocked kernel to this, download his Galaxy Cubed 3 ROM on this thread and flash just the kernel. If you want his CWM recovery, flash that too. But don't flash the other files if you want to keep the stock EI04.
You will end up with a stock, rooted ROM with an overclocked (1.6) kernel and a CWM recovery to do nandroid backups and flash mods. Sweet.
D, you are awesome! Thank you.
CW Recovery
Tried flashing (with heimdall) your kernel & recovery from Cubed 3 onto this stock/rooted but I bootlooped - is there something I'm doing wrong?
Also, assuming I'm able to get at least the clockwork recovery flashed, is there a way i can get the CW App you have on the Cubed Roms?
Thanks as always for the great support -

Far as I know it should work. Might have to wipe. I know people have donew the kernel, can't see why recovery would be an issue. Maybe a bad flash?
As for the app, it was made by chainfire, search for it.

Thanks - I'll give it another shot - and yes, I know, google is my friend ...
To verify,
In FactoryFS I place system.rfs
In Kernal (zImage) I place zImage
In Param.lfs I place Param.lfs
Leave Primary and secondary bootloader slots empty.
In cache I place chache.rfs
Leave database, modem and recovery empty.
Correct? Or does recovery get a copy of system.rfs?
---------- Post added at 06:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:34 PM ----------
Note that my goal is to get back to stock so that I can exchange this. I rooted and changed ROM because of the FCs I was getting in machine gun speed since I did the 2.3 OTA. I tried flashing Cubed 3 in hopes that I could get out of my issue, but there seems to be more going on here than a software issue.
I need to get pure stock, and complete a waranty exchange.

This is FABULOUS - Now My GTab is a Useful Tool, Not Just a Plaything
Thanks, dsb9938, for your time and energy put into this Stock+Root Vanilla for Verizon CDMA GTabs! I'm not into playing with different ROMs, and am limited by where I live to Verizon as my carrier, so I was thrilled to find this thread - Root without the learning curve of a different ROM.
Thanks also, to leapinlar for his input - after the holidays, maybe I'll play with overclocking. And, I sent thanks to Glass Echidna for Heimdall and their helpful instructions; this was my first Root (although I'd purchased a rooted cheapie prior to the GTab), but I felt very confident.
I did the Root last night, using Hiemdall 1.1.1 Suite, and it went without a hitch. I was so excited that I stayed up all night, getting Titanium Back-Up Pro wrapped around all my precious apps and data, re-installing, etc.
It's great to know that I can go back to "stock stock" if needed but, in the meantime, get rid of piles of bloatware. I'm an old "mainframe dinosaur" - it's good to get system-level control of my technology, once again. My main thrill, so far, is that I've been able to freeze the stock calendar & contacts in favour of useful ones - eliminating redundancy. Oh - and being able to back up data with apks is a huge relief....
The point of my Thanks to you? I did not WANT "bells & whistles" - just a streamlined machine - and that's exactly what you have given me. I sure hope that you will be creating vanilla stock+roots for many future versions. In just 24 hours, you've had a most positive effect on the efficiency of both my personal and business lives, and I wanted to let you know.
"There is No Free Lunch": I sent a donation (not nearly enough to cover the benefits I received, ) to acknowledge your excellent work. I hope that everyone who benefits from your work does the same....
Can it be used on Sprint Galaxy Tab?
Thanks.

Anyone know a better rom for vzw tab than this?

Bricked my phone?

Ive been rooted for the past 3 days with zero issues and no bloatware installed. Everything was great until today. I left for work and then I got zero data. Checked in my settings and it didnt even have my number in there or anything, just showed zero about a network or anything. Took it back to t-mobile today and they tried to hard reboot it and now I cant even get to the main screen. Tried a stock rom to recover it to factory and nothing. When I turn it on it just shows samsung now. Is there a way to go back to stock with odin or anything I can do?
Also when I boot into recovery its no longer cwm, and when I uploaded another stock rom onto it, I cant even see the sd card now.
Odin a stock rom. Your just soft bricked if you still have some activity.

Heres a tar. Of the 2.3.6 update with wifi calling also beforehand flash stock recovery via odin if u dont have it already....then flash this tar. Good luck
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391174
Edit....it is totally stock so you will be good then for root just use melvins root process it works u might have to flash root 2 or 3 times while in recovery . But it works
Is there a link to the stock recovery? All im seeing is cwm.
Let me know....hold on.....here

I will also get u the root file and cwm its in same thread u will do that after u flash rom tho. Right now just get to stock recovery then rom
---------- Post added at 10:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:56 PM ----------
Heres the root and cwm (recovery) thread like i said do this after your rom is odined on device. Flash cwm then go into cwm make backup let it finish then attempt root. (i said backup cuz u always should do this) also when looking for a file in odin hit pda then search for your tar. U downloaded select it and start odin!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311194
Ok I finally got back to stock setup but I still have zero data and when I go into the status menu its unknown network, no signal, no mobile, and it says out of service. I did get a new sim card from t-mobile earlier today but both do the same thing. Phone defect or a problem caused by rooting?

That is the root I had on my phone all week before my phone became "out of service state". All I did was delete bloatware I would never use or want and it worked fine for 3 days, zero issues.
Nah cant be.....thats weird idk dude sorry i tried i got one more suggestion go to rootzwiki.com go to there forums and go to our gs2 variant and hit up development section whitehawkx has the flashable modem as a zip so u can flash it in cwm. Try that. Because it sounds baseband related (modem)

I just removed the t-mobile mall,tv and other crap like that. The email app, basic apps like that, and the free games. I had everything backed up as well so I know it wasn't anything I deleted.
100% stock phone now, reflashed the modem seperate, 2 sim cards and still have an out of service phone. Has to be a hardware issue. I can use wifi and get online and app market with no problem but nothing from t-mobile.
So I was wondering if any of you have heard of a phone not urning on at all. Like no download mode, no recovery, NOTHING!!! Mine just did it out of nowhere...

Yes, that happened to me on monday when my phone first arrived. I ended up getting a new phone from the t-mobile store by me. Plugging in the usb cable to charge the battery didnt even work. The ONLY thing I think that causes this is having re-partition and F. Reset time checked off in odin. On my replacement phone I was very careful to double check everything checked off and not checked along with software chosen and it then worked like a charm. If your phone blacked out you need to get it replaced, I havent read of anyway to fix that problem.

[Q] RhythmicRom v1.4 how to activate phone without Activate or My Account app?

So i made the mistake of doing the HTC ONE V OTA update back in march.
It was the "Software Update: 1.10.652.6 (73.1 MB)".
After doing so i tried to flash a custom rom.
The result was my phone being stuck in a boot loop.
I bought a cheap android phone and switched my number to that phone.
I saw that the RhythmicRom v1.4 worked with the OTA update and so i flashed my HTC ONE V to that rom and it stopped my phone from boot looping and so my phone works again.
My only problem is that for me to switch back to my HTC ONE V is to switch it back though the VIRGIN MOBILE website.
After i switch it tells me i need to use the "Activate" set up wizard.
RhythmicRom removed the "Activate" and "My Account" app.
I also cant use ##VIRGIN# with this rom
My question is, How do i reactivate my HTC ONE V without the "Activate" set up wizard?
I really want to use this rom.
Ive tried to look for ways to do it and tried them but none of them work.
Ive also tried some ## codes but some of them dont work or require some security code.
Is there anyway to reactivate my phone using that rom?
I hope you made backup of your stock. You wil lneed to restore it and flash the stock kernel in fastboot. You will then be able to activate it.
the only backup i have its the one before the update. ive tried to use it before but it just reverts me back to a bootloop. now that my phone had been updated it doesnt seem to work anymore.
I've just added a thread in CDMA development

ok so i tried it. the rom wouldn't work. it has done this with many roms ive tried. it seem the only ones that are working are RhythmicRom_v1.4 & jellybeer. maybe it has to do with the code?
but i tried the boot.img from your rom combined with my backup that i made before the update and it booted up finally without any reboot problems but the wifi had an error in it.
but i then went to reboot to double check to see if it was working it booted past the virgin mobile part (with the people dancing) got to the htc logo and it wouldn't go past that.
when i tried to use you're rom it would come up as "Failed" i dont think the code is compatible with my phone.
What version recovery are you using... I'll look into it
im using TWRP 2.5.0.0
Down grade to the one I have posted in the 3rd post in CDMA development thread
---------- Post added at 11:16 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:15 AM ----------
2.5.0.0 will always say failed because it's trying to format a partition or your sdcard that does not exist
i will try it out thanks!
Welcome
so i tried flashing twrp v2.2.0 and for some reason it wont mount my sd card so it cant read it at all.
Do you have ADB checked under settings?
---------- Post added at 03:07 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:01 PM ----------
P.S. whenever you are in fastboot mode send command
fastboot erase recovery (press enter)
You'll probably get an error but move on and send command
fastboot erase cache
Now send command
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
This should give you a clean install of your recovery
If the problem persists, I'll take down the link for the TWRP 2.2.0 in my thread
when i got my phone, i went and tinkered with everything and had a custom rom on there before i got a chance to activate it as well, i ended up RUU'ing back to stock to activate, then going to a normal rom, ever since then, i've never needed to go back... hope this helps!

So what you're saying is that I have to flash a new kernel? If so, that's too complicated... I only rooted because I wanted to remove the bloatware stuff and leave everything else untouched. I'm kind of regretting it now.
Has anyone figured out a way to unroot and lock the bootloader again for the M8?
I understand - you're pretty new to this device and maybe to HTC's write protection they invented last year. That's ok mate.
With TWRP installed it's a very simple thing to flash the new kernel. Did you already do some flashing on these devices? I think it's more complicated to get root the first time than flashing a zip from TWRP. :good:
Anyway I'll help you there. Simply download Flars kernel and copy the zip-file to your internal SD-card. Boot into TWRP and choose the install option. Navigate to your internal SD and select that zip file. Start flashing and choose simply the defaults you get offered by the aroma installer. Finish, reboot and the write protection is gone. TB will work as always.

Thanks a trillion. But this thing was bugging me, so I said to hell with it and just installed the GPE RUU. How I don't have to deal with any of that nonsense since none of the bloat apps are installed in the first place. Now I just have to figure out how to reinstall TWRP and root again... This stuff seems a lot more complicated then just using ODIN on Samsung devices, at least for the time being while I'm still so new HTC stuff.
worked.
I'm using HTC since a couple of years and bought a S4 Mini for my daughter last year. Last week my sister stepped in with her Sony device. Don't ask how long it took me to understand and root these devices... lol.
If you need to know sth about HTC devices simply step in and pm me. But I think you'll be soon familiar with the differences! :good:

How do you flash the wp_mod.ko file you posted the link to? Sounds like it will do the trick and stop reinserting of deleted apps.
Thanks

Read a zillion threads, nothing sticks

So I've rooted my phones for the last 5 years, nexus 1, droid, rezound, gs4, n5 and then the m8. finally i screwed up, and i was getting bootloops. in my slightly panicked state i managed to wipe the OS completely off of the device.
i can get into fastboot and from there also TWRP recovery. i've read a million threads, adb sideload, One_M8 all in one kit, etc....
I can't figure out how to now simply flash a stock ROM onto my device. can anyone spell it out in a way this idiot can get it? i;ve downloaded a gazillion things. i'm stuck. i had to go pay full retail for a phone because as a realtor i simply can't be without one even for a day. it's my lifeline. i'd like to fix this one so i can return the new one and save $700.
thanks.
When you say you wiped the OS, did you also clear the partitions? Are you booting into recovery by flashing TWRP and then booting into recovery... or are you booting into recovery via "fastboot boot"? If you have partitions still, you can use a USB OTG adapter and memory stick (or just sdcard) to store the firmware.zip file and flash it from TWRP.
IF, on the other hand, you wiped your partition table, you are in a bigger mess. It's possible a RUU can help, but I'm not familiar with them so can't comment beyond suggesting that you look into that more...

There is a DEV RUU out. You can use that. Or if you want ATT, or GPE, find the zips, and use fastboot commands to flash. If the computer can see the phone and you can issue commands, then there is nothing to worry about. Been there done that dozens of times with the M7. After playing with this M8, seems to be the same. Let us know where you are stuck, i.e. don't know the commands, or don't know where to find the zips.

If the computer can see the phone and you can issue commands, then there is nothing to worry about. Been there done that dozens of times with the M7. After playing with this M8, seems to be the same. Let us know where you are stuck, i.e. don't know the commands, or don't know where to find the zips.

He wiped the OS, which is Android, thus he can't just plug it in and transfer files back and forth anymore.

That's my bad, didn't put 2 & 2 together. Thanks for explaining.

Surely if you've only deleted the OS just flash a nandroid from the stock backup thread via TWRP?

So I've rooted my phones for the last 5 years, nexus 1, droid, rezound, gs4, n5 and then the m8. finally i screwed up, and i was getting bootloops. in my slightly panicked state i managed to wipe the OS completely off of the device.
i can get into fastboot and from there also TWRP recovery. i've read a million threads, adb sideload, One_M8 all in one kit, etc....
I can't figure out how to now simply flash a stock ROM onto my device. can anyone spell it out in a way this idiot can get it? i;ve downloaded a gazillion things. i'm stuck. i had to go pay full retail for a phone because as a realtor i simply can't be without one even for a day. it's my lifeline. i'd like to fix this one so i can return the new one and save $700.
thanks.

Have you got an external sd card? whack it on there using a card reader and flash from external sd

If that won't work on TWRP use philz
not sure if i wiped the partitions. don't think so.
i can't transfer files to the device, the pc recognizes it to give fastboot commands via a command prompt, but not as a removable device.
i'll get an sd card on my way home today and try flashing a rom using recovery.

oh pretty cool. i have the sd card now and going to try. otherwise i may take you up on your offer.
anyone have a link to the right ROM zip file to flash for AT&T version phone?
EDiT: NM Found the thread in the Development section. Flashed it. Currently it's booting up, Android is upgrading optimizing all apps.

very strange. after flashing and rebooting, i didn't have a clean install of Android, all my customizations and apps from before were installed. and i got the same random reboots. so all that info was still on the phone. went back into recovery and wiped everything, then re-flashed. now have a fresh clean install of stock 4.4.2
Thanks everyone! i kinda thought the sd card thing would be the easiest but the comments in this thread confirmed it and it worked.

That's the beauty of the sd card slot mate, i have saved my m8 countless times. i would always make a backup of your phone prior to tinkering but this really helps save ur ass if you forget to backup.
Glad everything is ok and that this simple solution worked :highfive::good:
