Read a zillion threads, nothing sticks - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've rooted my phones for the last 5 years, nexus 1, droid, rezound, gs4, n5 and then the m8. finally i screwed up, and i was getting bootloops. in my slightly panicked state i managed to wipe the OS completely off of the device.
i can get into fastboot and from there also TWRP recovery. i've read a million threads, adb sideload, One_M8 all in one kit, etc....
I can't figure out how to now simply flash a stock ROM onto my device. can anyone spell it out in a way this idiot can get it? i;ve downloaded a gazillion things. i'm stuck. i had to go pay full retail for a phone because as a realtor i simply can't be without one even for a day. it's my lifeline. i'd like to fix this one so i can return the new one and save $700.
thanks.

When you say you wiped the OS, did you also clear the partitions? Are you booting into recovery by flashing TWRP and then booting into recovery... or are you booting into recovery via "fastboot boot"? If you have partitions still, you can use a USB OTG adapter and memory stick (or just sdcard) to store the firmware.zip file and flash it from TWRP.
IF, on the other hand, you wiped your partition table, you are in a bigger mess. It's possible a RUU can help, but I'm not familiar with them so can't comment beyond suggesting that you look into that more...

In the development section there is a system dump by (Mike1986). If your computer still recognizes your phone, download system dump to computer, copy it to your phone's internal storage, get into twrp and flash.

How would you go about copying to the phone's internal storage?

After downloading Rom right click on it select cut, go into your phone's storage on computer (as long as computer recognizes phone) find empty space right click and select paste.

There is a DEV RUU out. You can use that. Or if you want ATT, or GPE, find the zips, and use fastboot commands to flash. If the computer can see the phone and you can issue commands, then there is nothing to worry about. Been there done that dozens of times with the M7. After playing with this M8, seems to be the same. Let us know where you are stuck, i.e. don't know the commands, or don't know where to find the zips.

He wiped the OS, which is Android, thus he can't just plug it in and transfer files back and forth anymore.

Surely if you've only deleted the OS just flash a nandroid from the stock backup thread via TWRP?

Have you got an external sd card? whack it on there using a card reader and flash from external sd
---------- Post added at 11:04 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:01 AM ----------
If that won't work on TWRP use philz

not sure if i wiped the partitions. don't think so.
i can't transfer files to the device, the pc recognizes it to give fastboot commands via a command prompt, but not as a removable device.
i'll get an sd card on my way home today and try flashing a rom using recovery.

very strange. after flashing and rebooting, i didn't have a clean install of Android, all my customizations and apps from before were installed. and i got the same random reboots. so all that info was still on the phone. went back into recovery and wiped everything, then re-flashed. now have a fresh clean install of stock 4.4.2
Thanks everyone! i kinda thought the sd card thing would be the easiest but the comments in this thread confirmed it and it worked.

That's the beauty of the sd card slot mate, i have saved my m8 countless times. i would always make a backup of your phone prior to tinkering but this really helps save ur ass if you forget to backup.

[Q] Recovery help needed

I'm in a bit of a pickle and need some guidance. This may be a bit long but it'll all tie together. I have searched and read through a ton of threads but nothing quite seemed to work. I am fairly computer savvy and had no issues rooting the phone and messing around with it but I'm stumped.
I had some minor issues with my rooted EVO running Ava Froyo back in April before I left the country (random FC on certain processes). I sent the phone home as it won't work in the Middle East and asked that the wife use it and keep the apps up to date. Well, surprise no such luck I think she turned it on before she sent it to me to make sure I have no voice mail and that was it. Fast forward to a few days ago when I received the phone in preparation for going home to the States for the holidays and attempted to update apps and such. It updated a few but I'm getting all sorts of Force Closes and now I can't download anything, Android Market, App Brain, attachments, etc. I need to get the phone sorted and updated in the next week or I'll be SOL.
Here's what I've got so far:
the phone is rooted - S-off
the backup I had must have gotten corrupted so I can't flash anything
For some reason CWM is no longer installed and can't install because when I was able to connect via wifi it won't download (server error)
When I boot to recovery I get the phone with the red triangle. Vol Up and PWR button get me to the next screen but I can't do anything from there.
I can't seem to locate all of the latest PC36IMG.zip files, the ones I have don't seem to work
I'm sure there is some critical info I'm leaving out but my head hurts.
I have limited connectivity and limited bandwidth so it makes downloading anything larger than 10mb problematic. It's possible but the stars must align.
The goal is to fix whatever the problem is, flash CM7, update everything so I can can use it on leave in about a week. I'm hoping all the really smart Android folks can point me in the right direction.
I've attached Amon Ra 3.08 to this post. This recovery should be able to restore both CWM and Amon Ra nandroid backups. Good luck!
That file did it, thanks. All the ones I had must have either been old or corrupted.
Flashed CM7, totally different than anything I've ever tried before. It's totally stripped down but has tons of tunability. I do need to get Android Market installed so I can sync all the apps in my account.
Glad I could help, ibcrusn! If you need help getting the Market, I've attached the latest gapps for CM7.

rename to PC36IMG.zip and flash in the bootloader
Sounds stupid how do i flash as the bootloader.
Reboot while holding Power+volume down
Then it should ask you if you like to update, volume up for yes then again for reboot. Then boot into your new recovery.

[Q] HELP - Wiped the OS off of my Galaxy S3 I747

Alright, well I've come to a problem and I'm not quite sure how to fix it.
The title pretty much says it all, I've completely wiped the operating system off of my phone. There is nothing left, absolutely no data or anything. I was much too hasty and irresponsible, and I fear for the worst. I had previously attempted installing multiple ROMs multiple times using CWM to no avail so I re-rooted and switched over to Team Win. I know before installing a ROM you have to wipe your phone, well... I hit advanced wipe and within that I hit "system", went ahead and wiped. There's nothing left on my phone my phone and there are no ROMs on my SD card. I had backed up my phone before wiping but when I wiped that was also deleted. Before restarting it always warns me "No OS installed on your phone, are you sure you want to reboot?" Of course it's bricked and stays at the "Samsung Galaxy SIII" screen. I attempted putting a stock ROM back on my phone through ODIN, but a'las it didn't work (always stops at "SetupConnection"). I have nothing and there is no way for me to get a new ROM on the phone, I obviously cannot connect to my computer unless through download mode because the phone is bricked. So, what do I do? Is there any hope left for me or am I just completely screwed? The phone is less than a month old.
another option is to purchase a micro sd card and place a ROM and gapps (if required) on it, install the card and boot into recovery.
so when you connect your device to your pc, you're getting a yellow com connection in odin? what link did you follow for a stock ROM?
as long as you can still access recovery and download mode, there is hope, buddy.

Yeah, when I connect to the PC I get a yellow com connection in ODIN. I followed what is, perhaps, a sketchy looking link for the stock ROM... It's not letting me post a link because I'm a new member to the board, though I've looked over this place plenty of times in the past. Should I look for something a bit more official and retry? I don't think it's going to work. Will a ROM work, without an OS? I know that may sound silly but everything I've tried so far has failed.
here's a link to the stock firmware with root already injected: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
flash the tar in odin like you have been. make sure the auto reboot box is unticked. if you get a PASS after flashing, unplug the device, pull the battery, replace it and press the recovery button combo. once in recovery, wipe data and wipe cache. reboot.
lemme know if that worked, otherwise throw a ROM on a micro sd card as stated and go that route
btw, a ROM is the OS.
And also, my phone has to be rooted for a ROM to be installed, right? Well there's no guarantee my phone is still rooted since I've wiped literally everything on the phone. I like the idea of a placing it all on an SD card but that could be wasted money and I don't have very much money to spend, especially if a ROM isn't going to replace all of the needed system files which have been deleted.

so I am sure someone will make something soon...
till then will just have to go back to my old phone.
Thanks.
I would assume you need to try to get fastboot working, but I have never tried to get into the G2's bootloader. But you'll get ADB - Fastboot working, you will, you just need to keep trying. Try someone else's computer if you have to.

You are looking at doing the same thing I am going to try, but when I went to where you download... the only Sprint image I see is a .zip... not a .kdz... and that program they use only recognizes .kdz's...

You should be able to, as long as you can get adb to see it, you are good, you can even just adb push a rom over to the "NON" SDCard... and then just flash from TWRP...
The main problem we have is that without a SDCard that you can take out and put a rom on, we are stuck.

I'm guessing there's no way to unroot either in order to try and get it covered by the warranty?

I think I figured it out dude. Follow these instructions from this guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448960 Only using the Sprint files located in this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476
EDIT: The flash program, DLL's, and Sprint .tot file are located here in this link to avoid confusion http://storagecow.eu/index.php?dir=Xda%2FLG+G2%2FStock%2FSprint+LS980%2F. These are the only files you need. So get that zip and extract it then use those files with the instructions in the first link I posted.[/URL]

you have to extract the megalock.dll from its archive and overwrite the existing one in the LG flash tool directory. Then launch the program.

Just read the info in the links - thanks for posting about your success. Good to know there's a way out if I get into the same situation flashing a ROM on my G2.

[Q] Stock Apps Keep Re-installing after restart?

So I unlocked my bootloader, installed TWRP and rooted my phone. Next I downloaded titanium backup and uninstalled all the apps that I didn't want like kid mode and fitbit and TV etc... But whenever I restart the phone, all the apps are reinstalled again. Never had this issue on my S4. Does anybody know what's up?

So what you're saying is that I have to flash a new kernel? If so, that's too complicated... I only rooted because I wanted to remove the bloatware stuff and leave everything else untouched. I'm kind of regretting it now.
Has anyone figured out a way to unroot and lock the bootloader again for the M8?
I understand - you're pretty new to this device and maybe to HTC's write protection they invented last year. That's ok mate.
With TWRP installed it's a very simple thing to flash the new kernel. Did you already do some flashing on these devices? I think it's more complicated to get root the first time than flashing a zip from TWRP. :good:
Anyway I'll help you there. Simply download Flars kernel and copy the zip-file to your internal SD-card. Boot into TWRP and choose the install option. Navigate to your internal SD and select that zip file. Start flashing and choose simply the defaults you get offered by the aroma installer. Finish, reboot and the write protection is gone. TB will work as always.

Thanks a trillion. But this thing was bugging me, so I said to hell with it and just installed the GPE RUU. How I don't have to deal with any of that nonsense since none of the bloat apps are installed in the first place. Now I just have to figure out how to reinstall TWRP and root again... This stuff seems a lot more complicated then just using ODIN on Samsung devices, at least for the time being while I'm still so new HTC stuff.
worked.
I'm using HTC since a couple of years and bought a S4 Mini for my daughter last year. Last week my sister stepped in with her Sony device. Don't ask how long it took me to understand and root these devices... lol.
If you need to know sth about HTC devices simply step in and pm me. But I think you'll be soon familiar with the differences! :good:

Supposed to.
Rootrider. Thanks for your posts on this subject. I too am new to HTC (3 x Galaxys before that).
How do you flash the wp_mod.ko file you posted the link to? Sounds like it will do the trick and stop reinserting of deleted apps.
Thanks

[Q] Whoops...messed up and need to restore ROM...

Hi there -
I recently bought a D851 LG G3 from someone who told me they had rooted and unlocked it using PurpleDrake, but otherwise had left it as stock. I like the phone quite well overall, but the oversharpening on text was really bugging me. I noticed that there's a thread with a fix for that (here) and figured I'd try it out.
First, I installed TWRP using the TWRP Manager app from the Play Store. Second, I rebooted into TWRP and installed the .zip file for the Sharpening Mod. All seemed to go okay -- I got to the part of the Mod asking me for sharpening level, and it finished successfully -- but when I rebooted the phone, it's stuck in a loop where it shows the LG logo for a few seconds, then reboots. Being the bonehead that I am, I forgot to backup the existing ROM before I did this.
So that leaves me with two questions:
1. How do I get the phone functional again? I was happy enough with the previous ROM and am not necessarily looking for a custom ROM, but if there's one that's very stable and that people recommend, I'm open to that. I'm hoping to get Lollipop on the phone once LG releases it, so I'd like to avoid doing anything that will interfere with that.
2. Did I do something wrong when trying to install the Sharpening Mod? I'd really like to get that issue fixed...without screwing up the phone in the process.
Thanks!
Uh oh... Flame on?

Why's that? I did some searching before posting this request -- hadn't seen a way to restore without losing root. If that's the only option, then fine, but I was hoping to see if there's a way to avoid having to re-root it. And I think the question of what ROM to use (Stock or if there's a Custom one that's stable and popular) so I can update to Lollipop when it comes out isn't unreasonable.
Also, even if I do have to go back to Stock and re-root, I was asking if I did something wrong in applying the Sharpening Mod -- so I can fix that issue properly next time. Again, my search didn't show any obvious answer to that question.

He said that because you posted in the android development section not the QA section cause clearly this is a question. Just ask a mod to move it before you get flamed

But I shall try and help and not be a flamer. Are you able to get to the bootloader or recovery?

Yes, I can get into TWRP recovery. Rather than invoke further ire, is it better to do this via PMs?

Try just reflashing a kernel if u have one on either ur phone or SD card. If u don't, download one onto ur PC (skydragon kernel would be my suggestion), boot into recovery, mount ur phone as MTP device, copy kernel to SD card and then flash kernel.

Thanks, that worked just fine...did exactly as you advised (Skydragon kernel and all). Then re-installed the Sharpening Mod fix and it all seems to have worked this time. Appreciate the help (and the education about not posting to the wrong sub-forum!).
