Bricked my phone? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Ive been rooted for the past 3 days with zero issues and no bloatware installed. Everything was great until today. I left for work and then I got zero data. Checked in my settings and it didnt even have my number in there or anything, just showed zero about a network or anything. Took it back to t-mobile today and they tried to hard reboot it and now I cant even get to the main screen. Tried a stock rom to recover it to factory and nothing. When I turn it on it just shows samsung now. Is there a way to go back to stock with odin or anything I can do?

Also when I boot into recovery its no longer cwm, and when I uploaded another stock rom onto it, I cant even see the sd card now.

Odin a stock rom. Your just soft bricked if you still have some activity.

Heres a tar. Of the 2.3.6 update with wifi calling also beforehand flash stock recovery via odin if u dont have it already....then flash this tar. Good luck
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391174
Edit....it is totally stock so you will be good then for root just use melvins root process it works u might have to flash root 2 or 3 times while in recovery . But it works

Is there a link to the stock recovery? All im seeing is cwm.

Let me know....hold on.....here

I will also get u the root file and cwm its in same thread u will do that after u flash rom tho. Right now just get to stock recovery then rom

Heres the root and cwm (recovery) thread like i said do this after your rom is odined on device. Flash cwm then go into cwm make backup let it finish then attempt root. (i said backup cuz u always should do this) also when looking for a file in odin hit pda then search for your tar. U downloaded select it and start odin!

Ok I finally got back to stock setup but I still have zero data and when I go into the status menu its unknown network, no signal, no mobile, and it says out of service. I did get a new sim card from t-mobile earlier today but both do the same thing. Phone defect or a problem caused by rooting?

That is the root I had on my phone all week before my phone became "out of service state". All I did was delete bloatware I would never use or want and it worked fine for 3 days, zero issues.

Nah cant be.....thats weird idk dude sorry i tried i got one more suggestion go to rootzwiki.com go to there forums and go to our gs2 variant and hit up development section whitehawkx has the flashable modem as a zip so u can flash it in cwm. Try that. Because it sounds baseband related (modem)

I just removed the t-mobile mall,tv and other crap like that. The email app, basic apps like that, and the free games. I had everything backed up as well so I know it wasn't anything I deleted.

100% stock phone now, reflashed the modem seperate, 2 sim cards and still have an out of service phone. Has to be a hardware issue. I can use wifi and get online and app market with no problem but nothing from t-mobile.

So I was wondering if any of you have heard of a phone not urning on at all. Like no download mode, no recovery, NOTHING!!! Mine just did it out of nowhere...

Yes, that happened to me on monday when my phone first arrived. I ended up getting a new phone from the t-mobile store by me. Plugging in the usb cable to charge the battery didnt even work. The ONLY thing I think that causes this is having re-partition and F. Reset time checked off in odin. On my replacement phone I was very careful to double check everything checked off and not checked along with software chosen and it then worked like a charm. If your phone blacked out you need to get it replaced, I havent read of anyway to fix that problem.

[Q] Boot hang after flashing using Odin back to stock rooted

Hello all,
I am facing problems with my SIII right now. I was running AOKP but due to the bluetooth not being able to sync with my stereo, I decided to go back to stock rooted. I just flashed back the stock rooted image using Odin, but now my phone sits at the Samsung screen with the blue notification light on. I have tried rebooting, and it gets to this point (after the rethink possible screen) and just sits. I am thinking another flash in Odin is in order? Is there a stock, non root image I can flash via odin? I am just really lost for ideas right now and any input would be appreciated! Thanks!
Update:
I tried flashing with odin again and this time I got a failed. It was in the process of flashing the "system". I am kinda starting to freak out. I am hoping that it's just the file I'm using (though it just worked not even a few days ago.) I am trying again and if this one bombs out, I think I am going to try a different file. The one I am downloading to try next is the "stock unroot" from the how-to video. Anyone have any luck with this?
Another Update:
I just re-flashed with odin, this time it says it successfully completed but once again it's stuck at the flashing Samsung logo with the indicator led on.... I am starting to really freak out lol. I have another file downloading that is supposedly just stock, no root or anything...

I've always noticed the LED being on during boot (or some of the boot) and it was also on when I had a bootloop during cm9 so I don't think it means anything.
Fair enough, I guess I never paid that much attention till now when things don't work heh. I do recall reading about someone else having the similar issue using odin...I am trying to find the post and if there was any follow up on it.

Correction : Used that link you had posted, it was still stuck so I loaded up the toolkit and used option 20 for reboot options to force it into default recovery, wiped data & cache from there and let it reboot, it seemed to have hung but waited a few minutes and it came back to life. Back to complete stock here now, hope it works for you.

When you say toolkit are you talking about the one from the thread labled [SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 QCOM TOOLKIT V2.3] Drivers Backup Root CWM BusyBox + MORE [ATT]? And if so you just opened it and used option 20? nothing else? This sounds great if it works hehe.

Should have explained a bit better. Yes that toolkit
While it was stuck at samsung screen.
1 For AT&T (Obviously)
20 For reboot options
1 For recovery.
Then wipe data/cache
Then wiped cache (no idea why)
then rebooted.
When i did an Odin to stock I also froze on the Samsung logo. I had to boot to recovery and do a factory reset I side recovery to get it to boot. Keep in mind everything will be deleted though

That is exelent. I am downloading the toolkit right now and will report back shortly.
Once you got it to boot, did you still have root? I am wondering if you flashing the "stock rom" that I posted, if that had any impact. I have only pushed the root66 file, so I am expecting root when(if XD) I get this thing going again. I appreciate you being more thorough with your instructions, and will report back with my results as soon as I get some
Also, are we loners on this? I am not seeing any other posts about going back to stock/stock rooted from modded roms using odin? I am trying to figure out the best method to go back to stock. I made a nandroid and I am sure that would work, but all of this word about having to flash different kernels and bluetooth/wifi drivers to get stock working properly makes me wonder if just using odin is the easiest method, as it restores everything on the phone (to my knowledge).

UPDATE:Nvm, google hehe. I just did the factory reset...Things are looking good so far, the haptic lights turned on at least...BOOM! We are good gentlemen. It looks like all it took was the recovery wipe. This is great news! I will try to figure out how to mark this as solved, and you crash822, you get a thanks
NP sir. We all have to start somewhere. Luckily for me I was already planning on doing a full wipe so I backed up everything I wanted to keep from my phone onto my computer before using odin.
I seem to be having the same issue. I've downloaded the toolkit as you guys have suggested. are you guys in download mode on the phone while you use this? it seems to want me to be in debugging mode and i can't get to that. I've tried a factory reset with no luck.

[Q] why is the stock att rom the only one nobody has?

After being an iphoner right from the get-go, (jailbreaker of course), i finally got bored and moved on. plus, i really wanted a big screen. so i got a gn2 about a month ago, and rooted it on my mac two weeks ago using the CWM/mac/heimdall method. i have been running the stock-but-rooted rom, and not put on a custom rom yet. i have no real good reason for this, but for pure educational purposes and a desire for complete control, and/or warranty reason should they arise, i would like to do a full unroot and restore a stock rom. BUT everywhere I look, I can easily find every possible stock rom from every carrier and every country... except at&t (sgh-i317). i know i can use other that are similar. but my question is, WHY is what is potentially the most common/popular rom of them all, NOT widely available?
second question is: ok, so it's hard to find. but does it exist at all? if so, where? i tried to flash this one, (not allowed to post the link), using the CWM console that got put on the phone when I rooted it, but is fails every time I try saying the file or rom is "bad". is it bad, or do I need to do something else? FWIW, the fail flashings of this rom do no brick my phone. it reboots normally to the stock rooted rom i've been using since I rooted it two weeks.
oops, looks like i can't post links but the sgh-i317 rom i found was at a well-known net repository of stock roms

I found this over in the dev section in the Reference sticky.
http://www.hotfile.com/dl/181184536/fa1bbef/I317UCALJ2_I317ATTALJ2_ATT.zip.html
I haven't downloaded it, so I couldn't tell you what's in there. It might be a CWM flashable rom-only zip, or it might be odin-flashable files in there. You'll have to download and see.
Edit: Did a little more research.. That's an Odin tar file inside the zip.

I had to do a double take and make sure I wasnt writing this post. I am in almost the same boat under similar circumstances. I have been waiting for the stock rom for 2 months . I got my AT&T Note 2 in November and went through the root process and had a problem somewhere along the way and had to use a custom rom to get up and running again. Since then I have waited patiently for a stock rom to show up that would get me back to normal . My phone has been working , but my signal strength is bad and I can show 3 bars on my phone , but when I go to make a call , it drops to zero and I cannot make a call . This happens at work all the time and at home most of the times. My incoming calls are not accepted and are routed to my voice mail , which I cant listen to until I get to an area where I get a better signal . I cannot live like this for 2 years , I need this fixed . Just want to get back to stock , with no root , no custom roms , etc . I never had this problem with my iphone ! Love the Note 2 , but come on man!

Why not flash cleanrom att special edition and the correct modem. I have not had any issues with his rom. Did you do a backup of the stock rom before you flashed a custom rom? If you did go back to your stock backup.
www.stockroms.net
so i see we're all pretty junior here. none of the experienced folks have chimed in here yet.
getting back on topic, you could make a case that the att stock rom could/should be the most widely used rom in the entire gn2 world. yet it does not appear to be widely available, when the most obscure ones are. why is this?
-peter
thank you for posting that link, "member", because i couldn't. that's where i got the one that gives a "bad" or "corrupt" when i try to flash it in the CWM console.
sooo, is it corrupt? or is it user error on my part where i have to do something to the .zip file to make the CWM flash console able to use it? or do i have to flash it with mobile odin, (which i don't know how to use, yet).
-peter
ok member, i just unzipped the sgh-i317 file from stockroms and there is a .tar file in there, but "kies" is in the name of it. does that mean i have to use kies to flash it?

Hey so the only way to get back stock ATT (well the only way I know) is through ODIN. So follow these steps if you want your old AT&T unroot back, then root it again for a stock root experience.

And that .tar file is read only by odin I believe. I do not think you can flash it through CWM or TWRP, but I am fairly new to android (last 2 weeks, and before that 6 years of iOS). So I could be wrong.

For pcrussell50, you'll use Heimdall to flash that .tar file. I use Windows so I've never used Heimdall, so I definitely cannot help you with it. Good luck!

success... i think. used mobile odinPRO to flash the rom on stockroms net then rebooted in to download mode and sure enough, there is no longer a binary count, where it used to read "1" and it shows the binaries as stock. a further check under settings>about device>status, all the way at the bottom shows device status: normal. it used to say device status: modified until this flash of the stock rom from stockroms.
now the mystery... am i still rooted? SU, Ti backup, triangle away (which i never used), and mobile odinPRO icons are still on the home screen. i do not know if these things go away automatically after unrooting or if they still hang around. but when i try to boot into the CWM recovery mode, (volume up-center home-power it boots to a similar, but stock looking interface. that makes me think it's unrooted now.
overall pretty satisfied. i'll roll like this for a few days and try to pick up the new ota update and re-root again.
thx, peter
even more success...
i picked up the ota update to 4.1.2 just as if it was totally stock--so i think now i AM totally stock, after waking up this morning rooted, and spending parts of today unrooting back to factory stock. so now i know i can do it. i'll re-root here again when i can get some time. thanks all, and i'll try to help anyone else in my boat as best i can.
-att gn2 sgh-i317, now running 4.1.2
-rooted to stock rom, then unrooted
-using a mac for rooting/syncing

i must not have had it ticked, because after reading your post above, i went to odin (still on my phone) and tried to open it and it told me i need to have root (super user) to use it. it said no such thing when i was rooted, so at this point i _think_ i'm not rooted. i'll look for the app in the app store for even more confirmation.

So glad I left iOS. Even with a jailbreak it's nothing compared to android. I been rooted since day 1 and now I'm running the type 3 international stock rom by micosa. It's beautiful! Love the inverted apps for battery saving! I also have a swift flow beta keyboard and I lowered the height of the keyboard so there is more screen real estate with the keyboard up. And with s pen board switcher, I can go to handwriting mode as soon as I pull out s pen!

[Q] HELP - Wiped the OS off of my Galaxy S3 I747

Alright, well I've come to a problem and I'm not quite sure how to fix it.
The title pretty much says it all, I've completely wiped the operating system off of my phone. There is nothing left, absolutely no data or anything. I was much too hasty and irresponsible, and I fear for the worst. I had previously attempted installing multiple ROMs multiple times using CWM to no avail so I re-rooted and switched over to Team Win. I know before installing a ROM you have to wipe your phone, well... I hit advanced wipe and within that I hit "system", went ahead and wiped. There's nothing left on my phone my phone and there are no ROMs on my SD card. I had backed up my phone before wiping but when I wiped that was also deleted. Before restarting it always warns me "No OS installed on your phone, are you sure you want to reboot?" Of course it's bricked and stays at the "Samsung Galaxy SIII" screen. I attempted putting a stock ROM back on my phone through ODIN, but a'las it didn't work (always stops at "SetupConnection"). I have nothing and there is no way for me to get a new ROM on the phone, I obviously cannot connect to my computer unless through download mode because the phone is bricked. So, what do I do? Is there any hope left for me or am I just completely screwed? The phone is less than a month old.
another option is to purchase a micro sd card and place a ROM and gapps (if required) on it, install the card and boot into recovery.
so when you connect your device to your pc, you're getting a yellow com connection in odin? what link did you follow for a stock ROM?
as long as you can still access recovery and download mode, there is hope, buddy.

Yeah, when I connect to the PC I get a yellow com connection in ODIN. I followed what is, perhaps, a sketchy looking link for the stock ROM... It's not letting me post a link because I'm a new member to the board, though I've looked over this place plenty of times in the past. Should I look for something a bit more official and retry? I don't think it's going to work. Will a ROM work, without an OS? I know that may sound silly but everything I've tried so far has failed.
here's a link to the stock firmware with root already injected: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
flash the tar in odin like you have been. make sure the auto reboot box is unticked. if you get a PASS after flashing, unplug the device, pull the battery, replace it and press the recovery button combo. once in recovery, wipe data and wipe cache. reboot.
lemme know if that worked, otherwise throw a ROM on a micro sd card as stated and go that route
btw, a ROM is the OS.
And also, my phone has to be rooted for a ROM to be installed, right? Well there's no guarantee my phone is still rooted since I've wiped literally everything on the phone. I like the idea of a placing it all on an SD card but that could be wasted money and I don't have very much money to spend, especially if a ROM isn't going to replace all of the needed system files which have been deleted.

Have you installed the Samsung drivers?
---------- Post added at 06:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:27 PM ----------
Can you explain what happened with your phone? How did you "lose everything?" Is it able to boot up into Android? Can you get into recovery (TWRP)? Did you accidentally wipe something you shouldn't have?
I accidentally wiped my OS on my Galaxy S3 AT&T - Please Help!!!
Hello all,
I am a rookie user of smartphones and I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 AT&T. I accidentally wiped my OS leaving me with no OS. The good news is that I can still use Team Win and boot into recovery. How can I download and install a new OS? I live in a rural area with no place to go to get this fixed; so I would really appreciate any and all help on this matter. Thanks for reading

[Q] unroot.Remove twrp

I just unrooted my gs3 on softskip toolkit. Is it possible to remove twrp and go back to stock?. Do I have to root my phone first to restore my backup i made before i rooted my phone? I have to get my phone fix my camera is not working at sprint. Also is it possible to wipe data etc. I do not want them to know I rooted my phone.

I'm just copying this from a previous post of mine on another thread.
The safest, easiest, and most foolproof way to restore to completely stock ROM and recovery would be through Samsung Kies. You can download Samsung's KIES software here: http://www.samsung.com/ca/support/usefulsoftware/KIES/JSP
Once in KIES, you would plug in your phone to the USB port and, if needed, download any drivers for your phone. Then, you would follow this path: Tools --> Firmware Upgrade and Initilisation. This will give you a warning that you will lose all your stored data on the phone, and will offer you to make a backup -- a very limited backup -- of information on your phone. If you don't have any worthwhile information, I'd skip the backup and go right to stock ROM/recovery restore.
Also, I am pretty sure you have to be on a Touchwiz ROM -- rooted/unrooted -- to restore. Recovery will not affect the ability to restore via Kies.
Caveat: Even though you do a complete stock restore via Kies, that will not reset the flash count in the bootloader. There is no way to reset it, and does indicate tampering even though you're on stock.
Hope this helps.

Ive never ran it on stock but triangleaway reset my flash counter to zero. I just ran it cuz mine was high and I wanted to see if it worked, which it did. There's also a way to get your software to official in the about phone menu if triangleaway doesnt, again it did on mine even though I'm running a custom rom

There is no known way to reset the KNOX trip status. That's what I was referring to. Once you flash something in ODIN it trips the KNOX indicator. I guess it's not quite the sams as a flash count, now that I think about it.
You are correct in that there is a way to show the phone status as "official" but that's purely cosmetic.
Oh OK. Gotcha. I wasn't even thinking about Knox when I put that. Do they actually check that if you have to go in for warranty work, or is taking them a smashed phone the only way around that?

I haven't the slightest idea. But, I imagine that if you don't let on that it is/was rooted and had a custom ROM, then I don't see why they'd check.
Who knows, they may even have an interface where they plug the device in and it immediately checks the bootloader for tampering.
Again, just guessing.

Just try running the Kies process again. It should work. If not, you'll have to put the phone in download mode and flash the ROM via ODIN.

I was thinking of adding that info too, but then I thought yeah, he's referring to the warranty bit, although the flash counter is a different thing, and still resettable via Triangle Away.

Best Buy Geek Squad, I can personally attest to, doesn't care if your warranty bit was tripped. Depending on your issue or the tech you talk to, you might be best resetting your flash counter via Triangle Away and Odining the stock ROM. For my first problem I exchanged phones for a few weeks ago, which was that OTG didn't work any more but data to the PC and charging worked, several techs were flipping out because there was the custom KT747 splash screen/custom recovery. Perhaps just restoring the flash counter and putting on the stock recovery would've been enough, but I wanted to wipe my phone for them anyway and put it back 100% stock. I went home, Odined the stock ND8 tar, took it back and they ordered me a replacement phone.
The second time I exchanged phones just a week ago, because the power button on the refurb they gave me was faulty and causing it to turn on and off randomly like they do, I already had Odined the stock ND8 tar. When I told the tech up front that I had restored it completely to stock, he acted as if it didn't matter.
As far as Sprint, others have had the personal experience that they don't care about the warranty bit either. Word is that Samsung is the only one that checks or cares about the warranty bit. At least one person even reported that a refurb phone either Sprint or Geek Squad gave as a replacement already had the warranty bit tripped.

When you say "unstable" what exactly do you mean? If you hold volume down+home button+power to turn the phone on it will/should enter download mode unless you are bricked. Go into download mode on the phone and put odin on your computer, get the stock tar file on your computer and flash it to your phone with odin.

note 3 running 4.4.4 issues

ok guys, i have a question for you. keep in mind that im new to the phone world lol. ok so a bout a month ago i wanted to unroot my phone but for some reason the tar files on sammobile wasnt working right. so i came on here and downloaded what i believed to be the file that i needed to go back to stock. after i used odin and the phone rebooted it automatically notified me that i had a update. after i accepted the update and it rebooted, it again notified me that i have yet another update. so after this happened i noticed that my phone was updated to 4.4.4 kitkat which would be great exept for the fact that it keeps freezing and when i am on wifi i have a problem getting phone calls aswell as text messages. also when i disconnect from wifi i have to restart the phone to get any data back. is there anything that i can do? is it possible to go back to 4.3 or even 4.2.2? any help would be very much appreciated.

Hello! Did you make a back up of your phone before you started the update? That would be the easiest way to go back to how it was. If you used Odin and didn't install a recovery like TWRP or Clockwork you may not have done so. I believe you can reload from Odin with an older ROM it will just erase everything you did. There are stock ROMS here at XDA and galaxynote3root.com as well. Let me know it this helps, sorry for your troubles.

I'm actually surprised that you did get an update to 4.4.4... You could try going back to NF9. The safest route I see that you can take is to install a custom recovery and make a backup before doing this. If you odin NF9 and it doesn't boot then you're kinda screwed because we technically don't have the 4.4.4 update yet, so if anything goes wrong, you can install a recovery again and restore the 4.4.4 backup.

You can get the latest TWRP recovery here : http://www.techerrata.com/file/twrp2/hltetmo/openrecovery-twrp-2.8.1.0-hltetmo-4.4.img.tar
Just odin that and after it's done, go into recovery by doing Vol down + Home and do a backup either in your internal or external storage. After that finishes, you can go back in download mode and odin NF9.
