I read in the manual under the tethering chapter that USB tethering works out of the box on Windows, Mac OS X, or latest Linux distros.
Spend all day yesterday trying to get it to work on my 15" MBP running Lion 10.7.2 with no luck.
Is there anyone that can point me to the right direction to get this to work. I do not want to use third party tethering apps.
Thank you!
Not going to work ; where did you read it works on Lion?
ICS is still using NDIS based USB tether and Mac OS X (Snow Leopard thru to Lion) does not support this.
I just tested this - plugged GN to my Mac while USB tethering is on, if it was a non NDIS Mac compatible network adapter via USB it would have showed up in System Preferences, Network - it didn't
If I redirect the USB to my Windows VM on Fusion right away an NDIS adapter showed up and the Windows VM worked with tethering.
It's in the manual under the tethering. Clearly states Mac as one of the options.
"Share your phone's data connection via USB
If your computer is running Windows 7, Mac OS X, or a recent distribution of some flavors of Linux (such as Ubuntu), you can follow these instructions without any special preparation.
If you're running a version of Windows that precedes Windows 7, or some other operating system, you may need to prepare your computer to establish a network connection via USB.
1 Connect your phone to your computer with a USB cable.
A USB icon appears at the top of the screen, and the notification Connected as a media device or Connected as a camera appears briefly at the top of the screen. For the purposes of tethering, the type of connection doesn't matter.
2 Go to Settings > Wireless & networks > More > Tethering & portable hotspot.
3 Check USB tethering.
Your computer is now sharing your device's data connection.
4 To stop sharing your data connection, uncheck USB tethering or disconnect the USB cable."
Have you tried something like PdaNet?

Getting USB tethering working seemed like a huge hassle on my MBP, just use Bluetooth tether or hotspot is your best option

Its a big hassle to set up USB tether on OSX. It requires creating a new network config in system preferences and setting it up properly. Super annoying I ended up just WiFi tethering.

So have you seen an NDIS 10.7 driver stack - I haven't.. I don't think it's at all possible with a standard AOSP ICS device

There are a few benefits though.
- I'm on T-Mobile, so for me, I don't have to fork over another payment just for tethering.
- They've already bundled all the software you need in one neat package, so it takes most of the guess work out, especially on mac

Wait so nobody knows?
Just use wifi. You can still keep the phone charged over USB while doing that.

The earlier poster is in error.. USB Tethering is RNDIS only = NO SUPPORT ON MAC OS X.
Unless you are planning on writing an RNDIS driver you are out of luck with the built in ICS tethering. You will need to use a 3rd party app like EasyTether or just use WiFi tethering.

I just don't understand why did Google talk about USB tethering support out of the box in International GN manual as well as in Verizon's manual. WTF?!

I have the same question.
I am not on Verizon (living in Germany), and have a GSM native GN. In the (online) manual it is clearly stated that it works with Mac and cable. But as the others have written and as I experienced, it simply does not work :-(
Please do not tell me that I should use Wifi ;-) Yes, this works, but it consumes much more battery compared to cable.
i got it easy by using HTC sensation XL it has two options windows or MAC OS tethering ,, but i cant do it here on GN there is an app can do that .ClockworkMod Tether ...
Oddly enough, if you plug a Nexus S into a Mac and do USB tethering, it works fine using RNDIS or some other witchcraft.
If anyone is still looking for the T-Mobile US settings for tethering, try this:
When you enable tethering, have an active ADB connection, and you receive a pop-up in OS X that says you have a new unconfigured network device, then you're good to enter these settings and connect:
Telephone Number: *99***1#
Username: GPRS
Password: GPRS
I got the above credentials from the T-Mobile WebConnect Manager for OS X using one of my Tablet Internet Device SIM Cards in a Rocket 3.0 USB stick. So, if Authentication fails using the above credentials, meaning that OS X dials the connection, says "Authenticating. . .", then disconnects without ever saying "Connected", then try these credentials:
Username: none
Password: none
If that still doesn't work, leave the Username and passwords blank.
Click the Advanced Button:
Modem Tab:
Notes About Which Vendor to select:
If you don't have a Samsung, Motorola or Sony Ericson Android Device, and the modem does not supply a .ccl script or nothing comes up in the Model drop down list after select other, then try choosing Generic. My LG p999 (G2x), LG v909, Dell Streak 7, HTC One X and HTC Amaze 4G, and Nexus One displayed a Model corresponding to the device that was connected when I selected Other as the Vendor.
I can verify that this works on all of my Samsung devices, when choosing Samsung as the Vendor. IK verified it on my Galaxy Nexus (GSM i9250), Nexus S, Galaxy S3, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S 4G, and Galaxy S Vibrant.
Model: GPRS (GSM/3G)
APN*: epc.tmobile.com

*APN is the acronym for Access Point Name.
**CID: This should only appear when selecting Generic as the Vendor.
DNS Tab:
Leave these blank, they should fill dynamically, if they don't, try using 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 for DNS servers and tmobile.com as the search domain.
WINS Tab:
Leave blank
Proxies Tab:
Leave all unchecked, except for Use PASV FTP.
PPP Tab:
Make sure the following are not selected:
Send PPP echo packets
Make sure the following items are checked/selected:
Use TCP header compression
Use Verbose Logging (once you have gotten connected, you can probably disable this)
Redial 5 times if busy, waiting 10 seconds before redialing
Make sure Terminal script is set to None.
For resolving issues make sure to select Use verbose logging, connect using a terminal window, and Send PPP echo packets (only if the modem commands are not being displayed in the terminal window).
All the rest of the PPP options, e.g. Automatic connections and disconnecting are set to your personal preferences and security concerns.
I got it working by turning data off (on the phone)
Also works when the phone is connected to wifi
After connecting on the Mac, you can turn data on and it will stay connected

Hi,
i am currently trying to tether my tp2 with my mac book. With the xda orbit i had before the tp2 this was no issue at all however i cant seem to get it to work with the tp2. Problem is that the tp2 doesn't seem to advertise its PAN functionality anymore when the devices are paired. So the macbook thinks the tp2 doesn't support PAN. Now when I use the internet sharing app on the tp2, it tries to connect to the macbook and then tells me that the macbook wouldn't support PAN and therefore the connection cannot be shared. On the xda this worked slightly different: the xda would open up a PAN when I started internet sharing. Then i told the macbook to connect to this PAN. So i have a catch-22 here. Any ideas on how I could get this to work?
thank you,
Kork
On a funny sidenote: this worked yesterday for a few minutes. I activated connection sharing on the tp2, and it asked me where to connect to, i selected the macbook, et voila... This was actually even better than on my XDA as I could connect in a single step.
Today i just get the message that the target system (my Macbook) would not support PAN and therefore no connection could be made - which is an outright lie...
Called HTC about it. They were actually clueless and recommended to hard reset the device. Well I got all the time in the world, did a hard reset, no change. This still remains not working. Has anyone a working bluetooth tethering between the TP2 and Mac OS X?
Had a nice talk with Apple Support for half an hour now. We tried the usual stuff, and the guy was very friendly and trying to help me, but the bottom line was "we do not support windows mobile phones, htc has to make it work with a Mac". This came not totally unexpected though. So back to square one, I am not yet giving up. But no tethering is a blocker...
Okay, guys we are getting closer. I digged deeper into the Bluetooth Settings of Mac OS X and found out that the PAN set up is stored in com.apple.Bluetooth.plist in /Library/Preferences on the Mac. With my old XDA paired, i got some Entry in there called PANDevices and the Device-ID of the XDA in that list. The Device-ID of my TP2 was not in there. So i manually added the Device-ID of my TP2 and guess what - Tethering Happyness . Problem is, on any reboot, the setting gets lost. So i am going to write a small script that fixes the plist file. I'm doing a bit of testing as well, to see if this is really the fix, but I'm getting close.
Seems that wasn't it either. It seems that the restart of Mac OS X's bluetooth daemon actually did the trick, the changes in the file were actually pointless. So now I got reproducible behaviour:
1. Restart Computer
- Connection sharing from TP2 to Mac doesn't work.
2. Restart the bluetooth daemon
- sudo killall -HUP blued
3. In bluetooth preferences, click Advanced and tick "Share my internet connection with other bluetooth devices"
4. Start the internet sharing application on the TP2. Now it works. You have to repeat steps 1 to 3 if you reboot your Mac.
Going to give Apple another call, as this clearly looks like some bug on Mac OSX side.
This is exactly why if I get the TP2 I will be keeping my n78 or e71 as a backup phone. With Joiku Spot it makes it so easy to tether. Actually, I wonder if there is a program like Joiku Spot that would do this.
For those who don't know, Joiku Spot makes your phone a wireless hub, and creates a wireless network which your computer can attach, thus using the internet from your phone on your computer. I have a macbook, and with Joiku Spot, i'm getting roughly 1800 download speeds on my mac when i'm tethered.
There is: http://www.joikushop.com/?action=products&mode=productDetails&product_id=265 - > WMWifiRouter.
However, having WiFI + UTMS is going to drain your battery pretty quickly, that's why i use bluetooth all the time, which makes the device last much longer. But i guess the WIFI option would be more compatible with all kinds of OSes...
Yes, but when I am tethering i generally have access to a plug outlet so i have no problem plugging my phone in while i'm using it as a wifi hot spot. I was using my e71 via bluetooth on both OS X and XP and my speeds are doubled with using wifi. bluetooth can only transfer so fast.
Well i use it a lot on train rides where you can consider yourself lucky if you got an outlet for your laptop let alone one for your mobile phone... So bluetooth is the way to go...
You could use a USB charge cable to keep your phone powered off of the laptop battery, while using WMWiFiRouter or any other similar program for your connection.
Although I guess if your trying to have all this done wirelessly, that kind of defeats the purpose.
That would be a good reason! but, TP2 supports usb charging, so that shouldn't be a problem. Then, you can plug your laptop in at work or wherever you're going!
Just read what Tecknik said, so it's about the same!
TP2 tether to macbook pro
Hello, I'm also trying to get my tp tethered to macbook. There is an option under BT in Mac to specify username and a phone number to use BT to connect to a modem, do i need to specify any of this information? OR do I just need to select to "share internet with other BT device" on the mac?

I used to be able to tether fine about a week ago but now i'm getting the following msg:
"failed to establish internet sharing connection to remote device as it supports only network access point (nap) mode"
any thoughts? there is a bluetooth pan connection in network settings on my macbook. I've deleted it and recreated with no luck.
and "share my internet connection..." is checked in my device's advanced options from the bluetooth settings on my macbook.

I Tether on all my MacBook/Netbook using WMWiFiRouter all the time.
Just enable Wifi on your Mac and it autodetects some PAN settings -even on the airport card. Give this app a try.
This has known to work on Tiger and Leopard. Never tried it on SnowLeopard though.
Well sounds easy enough. However isn't Wifi eating up your battery like a starving ogre?
Killing BT with Terminal worked great. I have been struggling with this problem for a couple of days now. Nice work. Very much appreciated. I am going to link to this solution from my post. I did not yet verify the failure to function after reboot but I will test that. I'd love to have a script that does this automatically.

WMWiFiRouter eats up way too much battery, faster then the device can charge via USB (and my USB charing isn't working but thats another story)

Is there a way we can create a script to place on the desktop so we can just open up a shortcut that will automatically do this?

can't seem to find the login info and stuff for orange but it doesn't do it automatically you have to type it all in but that should be sorted with wifi tether, lets hope.
It's really tethering I'd be interested in, not fussed whether the HTC Sync works particularly...

has someone managed to get this working without using any third party tool ?
When I set the desire to share network connection, I see an modem available in the network configuration on the MAC but I cannot get it to connect, It keeps on prompting for cnx parameters , where there should be none ...
This is really annoying !
Thanks for your help !
I tried for ages and failed miserably to get it to work. In the end I caved and got PDAnet.
FroYo has the WiFi router capability now so I'm not worried about it.
Legend and Mac Internet Connectivity
Hi
I have been trying this with a Mac running OSX (Tiger) and an HTC Legend.
I got as far as starting system preferences....network
The Mac detected the Phone and I tried setting up the configuration with the Advanced button.
I used the Generic vendor, which then offered me a drop down:
bluetooth LAN access
dialup device
or GPRS (GSM)
I chose the latter - but it also asks for an APN and a CI (default is 1)?
Not sure what these are - or what to enter?
Or is this a red herring?
Many thanks
Well, people , was trying to Share my laptops Broadband connection with my sgs running MIUI 1.7.8 but couldnt get to to work. The phone just used to get stuck at "Obtaining ip address". Using Connectify didnt help me, so i had to manually configure the connections.
Here is a complete tutorial for connecting to the adhoc network to get it working.
Setting up the connection:
1) Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center.
2) Go to Change Adapter Settings
3) Find the adapter for the default internet connection (it was a PPPOE in my case, it is the connection u use to connect to the internet.)
4) Right click on that -> Cancel as Default Connection
4) Right click -> Properties -> Sharing tab
5) Uncheck "Allow other network users to connect ..." if it is not
6) Right-Click the Correct Wireless Network Connection > Properties > "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" in Windows Vista / Only "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" in Windows 2000 and XP > Properties
7) Choose "Use the following IP address:" and enter the following
IP address : 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0
Setting Up The Network :
1) Open Network and Sharing Center.
2) Under Change your networking settings, click Set up a new connection or network.
3) Select Set up a wireless ad hoc (computer-to-computer) network
4) Enter your Network name, and enter a Security key if wanted (Use WEP over here, WPA doesnt seem to work.)
5) Check the box for Save this network and click Turn on Internet connection sharing on next page.
Configuring the Phone :
1) Now on the android, go to Settings -> Wi-Fi Settings -> Advanced.
2) In IP settings, turn on use static IP.
3) Give The settings as follows :
IP address : 192.168.0.2
Gateway : 192.168.0.1
Netmask : 255.255.255.0
DNS 1 : 192.168.0.1
4) Now turn of Use Static IP. Dont worry, the settings will remain as they are.
5) Now Go back and connect to the adhoc network you created above, give the password and it will try to connect to it.
6)At this point, you will see Obtaining IP address, now go into advanced again and enable use static ip. Voila! you are connected to the network.
Well, if you're using Windows 7, there is no need for ad-hoc networks
Windows 7 has a built-in support for wireless hotspots, but unfortunatly Microsoft didn't implement a control panel for that.
There is a freeware called connectify, it will turn your Windows7 Computer with a wireless card into a real hot spot, no ad hoc needed:
http://www.connectify.me/
I couldnt get connectify to work either. But I found a much better (lightweight and simple) program which worked for me called "virtual router manager". Works a charm every time

Actually wireless AP mode was implemented in Windows 7 and therefore programs like connectify won't work on Vista or Xp.
Adhoc has been supported for much longer, but it is a completely different thing than wireless AP mode.
If you are running Windows 7, you should be able to use wireless AP mode. If programs like connectify somehow fail, you can always try enabling it manually.
If everything fails, upgrade your hardware.

Hi,
each time I use tethering on my Windows 7 PC it recognizes the connection as new (happens with USB and WiFi). I plug in the phone (or enable WiFi tethering) and Windows asks if this is a private connection and calls it network (or AndroidAP on WiFi). I plug it off and on again - the same happens again, Windows calls it network 2 (or AndroidAP 2). Next time network 3 etc. And with every number increase it keeps asking me, if this is a private or public connection, which is kinda annoying. My device is a GSM GNex running Stock 4.0.4. This happened with my SGS too. Any suggestions?
Lol same exact thing happens to me, it bothers me a little but is not like it hurts or affects the performance so I havent look into try to fix it

Sounds like the issue is on your PC end. Try naming your Hotspot something unique and putting PW security on it.
thx, i am using a custom name and wpa2 (no effect) but i used "androidap" in the post so that users find this thread when they want to google the issue.
Edit: I am experiencing the same behavior on my Windows 7 netbook. I tried Ubuntu on my PC - no bug here (WiFi and USB).
That is a Windows 7 fail.
This is a Win 7 issue I believe because it happens when USB tethering all 3 of my Android powered phones. I had over 150 network connections in Windows, until I found the "Merge or Delete Networks" option and was able to delete them.
Now I don't USB tether anymore. I have a datastick, and I also have a Linksys WRT54G with DDWRT flashed on it. Normally I use the datastick, but whenever I do need to tether I just fire up the wifi hotspot on my phone, the router connects, and it provides my lan with internet access.
Semi-Solution
I was having the same thing. It's just annoying, but you can remove the extra networks.
Right click on the network icon in your system tray, select "Open Network and Sharing center", click on the icon of your network, and on the resulting window there is an option to merge or delete networks (bottom left).
From here you can at least remove a load of networks!
I subscribe to a tethering plan, but mobile hotspot isn't working.
Setting network security to "Open" works, but otherwise, if I use wpa or wpa2, no
client devices (a HTC one S, toshiba laptop running linux) will connect. They
just attempt to connect and give up without any type of diagnostic message.
I really hope I don't have to reset the phone to defaults after setting everything up.

I do have hotspot active on the account. As I said, it works If I set the security settings to none.
Also if i put my SIM into my HTC one S, mobile hotspot works there with WPA2.
It's been really iffy for me. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I'll connect with a laptop but have limited connectivity. Not sure if it's something on T-Mobile's end of the phone itself. Barnacle doesn't work great either.

client devices (a HTC one S, toshiba laptop running linux) will connect. They
just attempt to connect and give up without any type of diagnostic message.
I really hope I don't have to reset the phone to defaults after setting everything up.

Did you add the tethered device's (i.e. your laptop) MAC address?
In TMO's stock firmware, you have to add the MAC addresses that are allowed to connect. I did not see anyway to turn this requirement off, nor did I see it documented anywhere.
