Well, people , was trying to Share my laptops Broadband connection with my sgs running MIUI 1.7.8 but couldnt get to to work. The phone just used to get stuck at "Obtaining ip address". Using Connectify didnt help me, so i had to manually configure the connections.
Here is a complete tutorial for connecting to the adhoc network to get it working.
Setting up the connection:
1) Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center.
2) Go to Change Adapter Settings
3) Find the adapter for the default internet connection (it was a PPPOE in my case, it is the connection u use to connect to the internet.)
4) Right click on that -> Cancel as Default Connection
4) Right click -> Properties -> Sharing tab
5) Uncheck "Allow other network users to connect ..." if it is not
6) Right-Click the Correct Wireless Network Connection > Properties > "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" in Windows Vista / Only "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" in Windows 2000 and XP > Properties
7) Choose "Use the following IP address:" and enter the following
IP address : 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0
Setting Up The Network :
1) Open Network and Sharing Center.
2) Under Change your networking settings, click Set up a new connection or network.
3) Select Set up a wireless ad hoc (computer-to-computer) network
4) Enter your Network name, and enter a Security key if wanted (Use WEP over here, WPA doesnt seem to work.)
5) Check the box for Save this network and click Turn on Internet connection sharing on next page.
Configuring the Phone :
1) Now on the android, go to Settings -> Wi-Fi Settings -> Advanced.
2) In IP settings, turn on use static IP.
3) Give The settings as follows :
IP address : 192.168.0.2
Gateway : 192.168.0.1
Netmask : 255.255.255.0
DNS 1 : 192.168.0.1
4) Now turn of Use Static IP. Dont worry, the settings will remain as they are.
5) Now Go back and connect to the adhoc network you created above, give the password and it will try to connect to it.
6)At this point, you will see Obtaining IP address, now go into advanced again and enable use static ip. Voila! you are connected to the network.
Well, if you're using Windows 7, there is no need for ad-hoc networks
Windows 7 has a built-in support for wireless hotspots, but unfortunatly Microsoft didn't implement a control panel for that.
There is a freeware called connectify, it will turn your Windows7 Computer with a wireless card into a real hot spot, no ad hoc needed:

I couldnt get connectify to work either. But I found a much better (lightweight and simple) program which worked for me called "virtual router manager". Works a charm every time

Not all network cards are supported by virtual router manager.. Mine was not supported.. whereas the above method works for all wifi cards regardless of model...
well, observed thks thing... for connecting to wifi everytime we need to turn of use static ip, then turn on wifi and wait for obtaing ip address message and after it is shown, go to advanced and switch on us sttic ip... this does the trick...
Connectify just keeps giving my system a damn BSOD...

Actually wireless AP mode was implemented in Windows 7 and therefore programs like connectify won't work on Vista or Xp.
Adhoc has been supported for much longer, but it is a completely different thing than wireless AP mode.
If you are running Windows 7, you should be able to use wireless AP mode. If programs like connectify somehow fail, you can always try enabling it manually.
If everything fails, upgrade your hardware.

I am using connectify on XP machine every day without any problems. But on windows 7x64 cannot manage to get ad hoc connection neither with connectify nor with virtual router or whatever it is called- I just get stuck at "obtaining ip"..
I used mhotspot today and worked well for my htc evo with mik3.0 and the KRAKD transformer
I wanted something like this so as to use the VPN service on the laptop..
and hook the other two devices through it..
(I am in China so need to hopthewall on my droid devices)

im trying to get an internet connection through my wifi connection. i have done search's and lots of people seem to be asking the same question but nobody has the answer.
at the moment i can access my c: using an application called Resco explorer. but i can not connect to the internet. im not sure what setting i should have on the wifi manger and on my pc. im also using AOL as my isp.

I got mine working but setting my wireless network adapter to connect to "Work".
Under Settings>Connections>Tasks>Manage existing connections>Proxy Settings> check the "This network connects to the internet" box
then
Under Settings>Connections>Advanced>Select Networks> "Programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using:" to "My Work Network" (and the same with one for private network)
Also in your active sync settings, make sure your connection settings allow network (Ethernet) and RAS connections.
From previous research around this, i'm pretty sure you can only use the internet pass through under "WORK" settings only.

Make sure you have "Enable Netbios over TCP/IP" checked in your TCP/IP Advanced settings.

Have you checked if you're getting an IP address from your Wireless Router's DHCP server? Also DNS settings and Gateway address should be there.
You can check this easily by using vxUtil (free )

Getting this error when I tried to allow my broadband connection to share with my wifi connection. If I unplug the wifi connection and try and share with another network I don’t get any errors.
Internet connection sharing (ics) cannot be enabled due to IP address conflict on the network. ICS requires the host be configured to use 192.168.0.1 please ensure that no other client on the network is configured to use 192.168.0.1
hmmm ... ever had the same problem. all devices are able to connect to the same router except mine sx66.
then i change the router's channel to '1' .. tada .. now everyone is connected. it might sounds silly, but it worked for me.
try changing your ap wireless channel.

i found the problem with activesync 3.8 and 4.0 somehow, so i reverted back to 3.7, now wifi can sync.
afaik, connecting to internet has nothing to do with activesync. its a direct connection to wifi router. use work location and check the proxy settings if u hv any? (at home i use connect to internet without proxy, at work i use connect to internet with proxy).
Also, for Activsync with wifi, make sure that the WINS server address is that of yr PC u want to sync with.

make sure the connection is active before attempting to connect... so kick up internet explorer or something that initiates the connection...
I have a connection, I can see it go active then I get an error.
I tried as you suggested, the error just comes up immediatly.
ERROR:
Cannot Connect. Likely reasons are:

mmm...i think i know your problem...
Click Start > Settings > Connections > Connections > Advanced > Select Networks... now what connection is specified in the 'Programs that automatically connect to a private network should connect using'
that should be your 'GPRS Connection' you are using to connect to your IP WAN

did you use Custel's cabs to install the Cingular Settings??
no, those always caused problems as I am using ISP not MediaNet.
btw- should have mentioned I am now using Black IV Shadow and Radio 1.43.00
Possible reason: your networkprovider has blocked the port used by remote desktop.
We had to change the gprs connection point/address when we wanted to use vpn to connect to our corporate network.
Try to get hold of at telnet application for your device and connect to port 3389 on you remote desktop server.

I had the same problem till I created two VPN connections. One for internal use (WiFi) and one for extenal use (3G).
The internal one uses the internal IP address of the VPN server and the external one uses the external IP address.
You have to sleect which connection you want to use before starting the connection depending on whether u r using WiFi or 3G.
Hope that makes sense. It works 4 me.

esseff, pardon my noobness but when you speak of "VPN server" is that referring to the desktop I am trying to remote connect to?
I have an ATT 8525 w/Black Satin Normal WM6 on the ATT network using MediaNet as my GPRS.
I can remote in from almost any open network via my laptop. Could it be that ATT blocks 3389? If so can I alter the port RDM uses to setup a connection?
are you able to remote connect PC to PC? (from outside of your current LAN)
if not ... its not your phone its your firewall... try disabling your firewall w/in your pc os and router.
would explain why you can connect using wifi if its part of your router and its set up as a "home network".
I'd bet if you googled this you'd find EVERYTHING you need to know.
Yes, I can connect just fine PC to PC outside the LAN. I have my custom listen port opened as required. The issue is definitely with the 8525 connection settings or the ATT service. I have trolled google pretty extensively, but have been unsuccessful in finding some quality info.

I recently came across connectify app and installed it on my Windows 7 laptop. It installed just fine and created a WIFI Hotspot for me.
But when I try to connect to that WIFI Hotspot from my desire , it keeps saying "Obtaining IP Address from Connectify" and never connects. I am not sure what's wrong , something in my Desire or something with Connectify or if I need to fix some settings in my Win7 laptop ?
Can someone please advise.
FYI - Windows 7 is connected to a my workplace LAN and requires a proxy authentication if i need to access internet.

Even I'm facing problems connecting to Connectify.
I suspect that IP address is not getting assigned since there are no DHCP servers running on the PC. That might be the first problem
Second thing is, even if I run a dhcp server (I'm yet to do it...) in my PC, I think the wifi and ethernet might be on the same or different network based on how the dhcp server is configured. But setting Default Gateway and DNS settings are whats getting me confused.
If I can find some Idle time, i can experiment and try it.. If anyone is already using it successfully, they can post on how to do it here.. will be very helpful.
My laptop is connected to my ADSL modem via ethernet cable, and I'm connecting the mobile to my Laptop's wifi (Via connectify which makes the WLAN in laptop appear as an Access point). This connectify should share the wired internet to my mobile via Wlan but i'm have not yet found how to set it up..

I had the same problem with connectify and I sincerely suggest you to try Virtual Router. It's crappy but it works.

Connectify`s main usage is to share the wired broadband to the mobile using wifi in laptop as a hotspot. It should be fairly straightforward but needs to set some settings correctly. It would be great if someone for whom its working to post it setp-by-step. Will be really helpful.
And strangely there are no guides on the net on how to set it up exactly in wondows 7 and connectify homepage does not give any useful info.

I don't know if it's really the same problem here but I also had some issues with Windows 7, connectify and the devices I tried to connect.
After following the steps to create a wifi hotspot, I had to deactivate the windows firewall on the private networks (I specified to windows that the connectify network was a private network).
There should be a way to setup the correct permission in the firewall's permission table to make it work properly... Unfortunatly I haven't find it yet.
So it's a quick fix. Hope it will help you.

in that again menu>Advanced .
fill these settings
1. check on the static IP
2. IP addres = 192.168.2.2
3. Gateway = 192.168.2.1
4. netmask = 255.255.255.0
5. dsn1 = 8.8.8.8
6. dsn2 = 8.8.4.4
now close wifi and restare wifi Hope it will work. It worked for me

You need this file for the Desire - search around XDA. You might have to download version 6 of the file.
When you download it, flash it from recovery.
Meanwhile, create an adhoc network on your laptop or wherever, configure the IP address (192.168.137.1 is the IP of the laptop - Windows, for some reason or another, doesn't like sharing on other IPs, though I haven't tried lately) and set your encryption to WEP.
Share your connection from LAN, and you're good to go. On the phone, the adhoc networks will be represented with an asterisk, like
(*)network
none of them work on win 7 64 bit - on win 7 32 bit I cen get IP, on 64 bit cant, whan assigned static IP by below at previous posts, I can connect, but internet does not work.

i came here from google as well. i had the obtaining ip address issue with connectify on win xp and zte blade with cyanogenmod (N142). thanks to this post, i solved the obtaining ip issue, and my phone managed to connect to connectify. apparently: my phone doesn't appear in clients tab in connectify, and my phone doesn't transfer any data traffic. so from the phone it looks like connected, but from connectify no.
edit: i found out that i succesfully connect to connectify with my smartphone only the first time i try (because it worked the very first time i used connectify and the first time i tried again after a complete reset of my phone). then, if i disconnect/reconnect, i find the "obtaining IP"/"no data traffic" issues. of course, resetting my phone each time i want to use my laptop's wifi isn't very handy..

same here, couldnt believe my luck when it worked first time with my HD2 and galaxy.
but like you say, it was a one-hit-wonder and pulled my hair out for next hour trying to re-connect but same "obtaining IP" probs.

I have been trying to find a way to connect my phone to a AdHoc network I created with my Windows Vista laptop, but the phone doesn't seem to fidn the network. I checked for this problem in several threads, but I cannot seem to find an answer for Wildfire. Most answers are for HTC Desire and/or HTC Hero. Has someone found a way to connect the phone to a AdHoc network, without compromising the conectivity to routers or other open networks?
Found the solution:
1. I flashed the nFinity Kernel mc4
2. I flashed this wpa_supplicant patch
3. I created an AdHoc network on my Vista laptop
[ATTENTION: Do NOT use WPA.. Only WEP encryption]
And then my phone was able to share the laptop's internet connection.
Google for "mhotspot.exe".
Share your pc internet to any mobile via WiFi. Rooting is not necessary.

Unfortunatelly, I tried Connectify, but it is not an option for my Windows Vista laptop! It is only compatible with Windows 7. Although there is no obvious reason for my staying on Windows Vista, upgrading is not an option right now. Thusly, I'm in search of some solytion other than Conectify.

MHotSpot doesn't seem to work either! Although I can find the network with other wifi devices, the Wildfire doesn't seem to find it in the list of wifi networks...
Connectify is a crappy software, as it completely stops your internet connection. I had to uninstall it to make it work again ( i use fastcable DIAL-up connection )
But you can do it with the CMD.
Open an elevated command prompt (Type “CMD.EXE” in the start menu search bar, then right click the cmd.exe link and select “Run as Administrator”).
In the command window, type: netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=MyNet key=MyPassword
Replace “MyNet” with the name you want to use for the wireless network and replace “MyPassword” with your chosen password for accessing it)
Press Enter.
Now type: netsh wlan start hostednetwork
Press Enter.

Right click your Internet connection and select Properties.

I just tried it, but it keeps telling me that there is no command set hostednetwork. And I did everything like you advised me: Run as administrator, etc etc. On what OS did that work for you... I run Windows Vista
Windows 7 but i see no reason for it not to work on vista as well.

Now type: netsh wlan start hostednetwork
Press Enter.
Open Control Panel and go to Network and Sharing Center.
Click Change Adapter Settings.
Right click your Internet connection and select Properties.
Click the Sharing tab.
Check the box that says “Allow other network users to connect.”
Choose your virtual wi-fi adapter and click OK.
If you want to delete the new created connection type in cmd: netsh wlan stop hostednetwork

well Im using connectify me since it is launched and now using a beta version of itAnd Im telling u it works fine and it has more function that u cant immagine.

The only commands available on my netsh wlan are these:
set file
set machine
set mode
set autoconfig
set blockednetworks
set createalluserprofile
set profileorder
set profileparameter
set tracing
So I suppose it has something to do along with the fact that connectify is only available for Windows 7. Apparently creating a virtual host is not an option for Windows Vista.
So is there a way, by changing something on the phone, to make it identify my adhoc network?
I also tried with add-hoc connection and it didn't work. But what i forgot to do was to share the internet with the new created connection aka share the connection that already has internet to the one created with the ad-hoc method.

I can't say more as I never used Vista much.

But still this means that your phone is capable of regognizing adhoc networks. My phone doesn't seem to "see" the network. It doesn't appear in the list of available networks, in the wifi section, after I scan for networks.
Does it appear in your list?

With the cm7 kernel it didn't work.
But i flashed the nfinity kernel mc4 ( the one in my sig ) and it works gr8
Found the solution:
1. I flashed the nFinity Kernel mc4
2. I flashed this wpa_supplicant patch
3. I created an AdHoc network on my Vista laptop
[ATTENTION: Do NOT use WPA.. Only WEP encryption]
And then my phone was able to share the laptop's internet connection.

Connectify runs only on Windows7 . On every other OS the AdHoc procedure is needed.

Any else update to Windows 8.1 yet? I did on Thursday and just tried using Wi-Fi tether from my HTC One to this computer for the first time since updating and the computer doesn't see the SSID. It also won't connect if I try setting up a manual connection.
All of my other computers see the hot spot fine- it's just the Win 8.1 that is not seeing it
I have tried a few wifi tether clients and all are behaving the same.
In case it matters, I am running stock with root access.
Anyone else on 8.1 with any different experience?
I'm having this problem... I can't believe there aren't more responses here

Had you connected before the 8.1 update?
If so, completely delete all information about that connection and try connecting like it's a new connection.
If that doesn't get it-
What settings are you using on the tethering?
WPA/WPA2/None for security?
If you're using "None" Windows has gotten cranky since Win7 SP1 about open networks.
If you're using WPA or WPA2, try switching it.
If all else fails, format and install Win7 and get your start menu back =)

It turns out that Windows 8.1 doesn't show ad-hoc networks and it's by design. Not sure what on earth made them add this change.
Anyway, after a lot of digging, I was finally able to force it to connect. I compiled a small howto.
Note, this is NOT about how to create an ad-hoc network to share your Internet connection with another device! It's about how to connect your Windows 8.1 PC to an existing ad-hoc network created on another device.
How to connect to an ad-hoc WiFi network in Windows 8.1.
Because the wireless network picker in Windows 8.1 doesn't show ad-hoc networks, connecting must be done by hand.
To see all networks in range, including ad-hoc, run this command in command shell (cmd.exe):
> netsh wlan show networks
SETUP
This must be done once per network.
* go to "Network and Sharing Center"
* click "Set up a new connection or network"
* double click "Manually connect to a wireless network"
* enter the SSID of the ad-hoc network (as shown by "netsh wlan show networks") into the "Network name" field
* configure security settings accordingly
* uncheck "Start this connection automatically" (important)
* click "Next", then "Close"
Run this command (important):
> netsh wlan set profileparameter <ssid> connectiontype=ibss
Replace <ssid> with the SSID of your network.
CONNECT
After setting up, run this command whenever you want to connect:
> netsh wlan connect <ssid>
Replace <ssid> with the SSID of your network.
Hovering over WiFi icon in system tray will show the name of the network that you are currently connected to, even if it's an ad-hoc network (the network picker will not show it if it's ad-hoc). The name is also visible in "Network and Sharing Center" window.
DISCONNECT
To disconnect from the ad-hoc network: connect to a different network, turn off wifi, or run this command:
> netsh wlan disconnect
CLEANUP
To remove the network profile from Windows, run this command:
> netsh wlan delete profile <ssid>
Replace <ssid> with the SSID of your network.
Are you using an app for WiFi Tether or are you using the built-in stock WiFi tether function? I use Android-WiFi-Tether because I'm rooted and I've never had this problem. Even on a Windows 8.1 computer.
I'm rooted too, and have tried every app known to man. It seems that others on win8.1 have trouble getting their computer to see an WiFi hotspots and ad-hoc networks, so I think it's a problem on the comput side (all of my non 8.1 computers see the hotspot fine).
But that's really interesting that you aren't having this issue. Which ROM are you using?
