Yes, you can trust it. Its the EK02 over-the-air update from sprint. It'll update you to Android 2.3.6

youll loose root, but take the official update anyway as you wont have to erase your data. then simply install root from the EKO2 sticky at development!

I actually HAVEN'T rooted my phone yet, in part because I was curious how OTA updates went, lol.
Still considering holding out for ICS update... But my guess is there will be was too many tasty enhanced ICS-based roms to wait for the stock vanilla-ish one.

Don't hold your breath for the official ICS update that Samsung/Sprint will push to our phones. Word last month per Samsung, was that the Galaxy SII line won't see the update until 2nd Qtr 2012 = April-June. And that the Galaxy S3 will be on sale right around that time.
This is very believable too, HTC took 6+ months to update their flagship device at the time, the EVO 4G to Gingerbread, which was originally released on the Nexus-S in December 2010, and the EVO 4G finally got it officially through HTC/Sprint in June 2011.

Not to mention, if you ask an OG Epic owner, you'll find that in some cases, you could potentially be waiting 1+ years for an official update from Samsprint... but at least the hardware's nice

I realize the OP hasn't rooted his phone and was asking whether or not he can trust the update so where I'm going is somewhat off topic, but...
I've been running rooted but stock. Yesterday Sprint started nagging me about the update. On my old phone, when I said "install later" I would be reminded again in a few days. On THIS phone, it felt like I was being nagged every 15 minutes.
Because Sprint was so insistent, I came here with the same question: "can I trust it?" I read the above post, double checked the EKO2 sticky to make sure I'd still be able to root, then decided to let the Sprint update do it's job. The above post because it lead me to believe I would be unrooted as part of the process.
I let the phone reboot to apply the update. When I checked my phone later it had a warning triangle displayed (not sure if this is the "yellow triangle" or not). I panicked, swore a lot, prayed, and pulled the battery... my phone works. I'm running 2.3.4. I have the EG30 baseband. I still have root. As far as I can tell nothing happened.
In case I decide to stay stock and Sprint starts nagging me about updates again, do I need to unroot in order for the update to work?

This is my concern too. I only recently decided to root my phone and wonder if rooting it will mess up the update. I used the automated root method, and the one that doesn't use ODIN.

Once we get the OTA update will we be able to do a factory reset while retaining that new 2.3.6? Or will the factory reset takes us back to the older version?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App

I think I found the answer to my own question, here.
In order to get the OTA update you have to unroot and return to stock.

[Q] is the leaked 2.3.3 or just a cover up of 2.2

went to a sprint store and the sprint representive said the EE03 for the epic 4g was a fake and was not the real gingerbread but a covered up version of 2.2 froyo is this really true????
Lol are you serious? The guys messing with you
xDDDDD. Wait you were serious? Sorry.
He's messing with you man. EE03 is a leaked version of 2.3.3, it most certainly NOT 2.2!
No. Otherwise Netflix wouldn't work on it. It is NOT an official release but a beta version. There will be later versions before it is released.
i can't speak for others, but IMHO the devs in this community know more than 99% of "Sprint store" employees about what is going on with the epic and with gingerbread.
Have you tried running the leaked EE03 rom? it has some functionality to it that is definitely an improvement over stock EC05 froyo, but also definitely a little way to go before a fully functional gingerbread release.
on a different note -- anyone hear about the progress of EE19?

I Totally have to agree the epic 4g is clearly a better phone if you screw up with it or something i have always been able to reset it and sprint techs not even having a clue i did that.
So, I work for sprint and I can tell you that xda has more info than we do. They don't really tell us much at all, xda would have info up for weeks before they officially tell us anything. Kind of funny

True dat, but by now we should all be used to pretty much every manufacturer/carrier lying about update dates.
HTC does it the worst - I remember when ICS came out on the Evo 3D - First HTC said it would be Q1, then they said "early 2012", and then "sometime spring", and it finally came out in July...
Don't forget out carriers taking their sweet sweet time bloating it up...memories of the epic and froyo/gingerbread are rushing back to me

The delayed ICS update for the EVO 3D was the worst. Good thing the devs had some great ICS ROMs working way before the official one was finally released.

HTC should no longer be talked about in the same matter as Samsung. The 3D was a flop and more of a headache for sprint and HTC to give it the ICS upgrade, but out of necessity (thanks Virgin Mobile) the upgrade finally made rounds.
Now back to Samsung and its most successful phone, one should expect Jelly bean to make rounds much more quicker then what would history would tell us.

I think Samsung is controlling the carriers' options for bloatware this time around, and you'll likely see less bloatware with these updates. Most reviews of the Galaxy S3 comment on how there isn't as much overbearing carrier influence on the phone to begin with, especially when compared to the original Galaxy S and Galaxy S II phones.
I learned not to be hopeful about updates with my old OG epic, I expect Official jellybean around now of '13.

I was like that, but then I had the GS2 for a while and noticed updates came faster as the hardware becomes more universal. With the SGS3 being so similar across carriers, I feel like the time periods may become closer like how the Nexus is. Their is some lag for CMDA, but with so little variance they aren't accounting for one with a keyboard and other strange variations. I think the main delay with the SGS2 was the recovery being attached to the kernel and the emmc bugs.
The devs here should have some great TW ROMs based on the international update so I'm not too worried about it.
Thanks for the info
Im not trying to get to excited about this since it never happens like we want it to but I am crossing my fingers.
Hopefully sooner than later

New OTA?

I'm using stock, rooted UVMB4, no custom recovery. I just got a notification that TMo would very much like to push an update to my phone. Since the June 17th deadline is past, they should not be trying to push UVMD1 on me, but I cannot find any documentation of a new factory ROM dropping.
Has anyone else gotten a 4th of July present from TMo? If so, what is the build code? I rarely take OTA updates, but if I'm the first to see it, I guess I could take one for the team.

Dang. Oh well. If they're starting to push MD1 again, that must mean that 4.2 is going to be a while. I couldn't believe that I'd get an OTA before Sammobile heard about it.
Or if your the optimist like me, the 4.2 needs a file from md1 so they pushed md1 again to make sure everyone has it... btw, 100% not true

Second this. Note 3 will be the phone to have anything 4.2 related is part of their selling point for the note 3. We will not receive a 4.2 update period until after note 3 is launched. Period. Is their sales pitch for the new phone. Looks like the note 3 for the U.s. Will have a quad core snapdragon 800 as well. That disappoints me for sure. I wanted that octo core bad. I'd buy the in ter national just to get it.
Why push 4.2 to the note 2 while that will be one of samsungs top sales pitch to buy the phone. Doesn't make business sense. The second most important sales pitch will be the camera.
In my opinion we won't get 4.2 until way after note 3. But we are on xda. Who cares if you want it bad enough GET IT . Anyone with the basic know how can load 4.2 right now in less than 20 minutes and have root and all. Personally 4.2 doesn't really style my fancy anyways. It's kinda weird imo

[VZW]Verizon Updates Droid X (9/13/13)

My first droid was a Motorola Droid X. Moved on to the X2 and then the nexus. I'm not 100% positive, but I think the X came out in 2010. Both the X and X2 were EOL by VZW pretty quickly. Which I thought was odd especially since the X2 was the first dual core phone if memory serves me correctly.
Anyways my dad was telling me he got notified about a system update today. I told him there was no freaking way Verizon sent an OTA to his phone. So it was booting and when it booted back up I saw that message. (Picture attached.)
So the Droid X just got what looks to be an OTA kernel update. I honestly never thought that phone would see any kind of OTA, ever again.
So what do you think this means as far as an official 4.3 or possibly KitKat OTA from Big Red for our phones? I posted a topic in that phones forum, but I figured I would post it here and see what you guys thought about it and if it means maybe we will get an update. Just something to discuss. If I'm breaking the rules mods feel free to lock this.

I don't think this belongs in the Galaxy Nexus forum for one, but there's absolutely no way it's even a 4.3 update, much less Kitkat.
Motorola long ago confirmed it wouldn't even get ICS, correct? Motorola during that time had a terrible habit of releasing phones that were practically EOL'd at launch (I know, I own a Droid 2 Global).
I can say with 99.9% certainty it's probably a small patch that does something like close exploits.
Yeah that's about all it does. Looks like it's a couple days old, too. Just got pushed to my dads phone today is all.
I just posted this here because our phone really wasn't updated that long ago by Verizon but a lot of forum members I see in different topics seem doubtful the Verizon nexus will ever see 4.3, let alone KitKit. I understand we're talking about kernel exploit patches vs operating systems here, but if they'll update a phone that old (just a patch or not) is there maybe hope they are working on our phone still? Maybe just wishful thinking? :/

Well, it would be on Motorola and Google to make the updates for the Droid X2 and the Galaxy Nexus, respectively. Verizon's only part is in their "extensive testing" that delays everything to ensure phones aren't doing something to screw with their network (but of course, Apple is exempt from these testing regulations, I guess they're somehow more trustworthy than Google).
So, it's not really Verizon potentially updating the Galaxy Nexus, it's Verizon accepting and pushing out Google's update (hypothetically- we don't know if they will bother updating the toro devices to 4.3+ or not).
This means that Motorola would have to make an update and submit it to Verizon, and considering they have already said the device will not be updated past Gingerbread, I don't think that will happen.
That's why I really only advocate getting onto a GSM carrier and buying an unlocked Nexus device from Google to anyone I know who expects timely Android updates.
The Verizon galaxy nexus will eventually be updated. Likely after the next update so WiFi auto connect isn't broken. Right now it is and that's a major issue.

Do I need to unroot to trade my phone it?

I have that jump program and feel like getting the GS5. I got this GS4 about 6 or so months ago and if I remember correctly (which I don't) I used odin to root it.. Had it rooted for a couple months then decided to put a rom on which was Wicked 5.0 or something. About 2 months ago I put wicked 9.1 on.
I'm pretty sure I saved a recovery before even putting the first wicked rom on, but WTF is up with the way it saves the files, maybe someone can help with this image, but what is the oldest date of these recoveries ?

If I was to go back to just the stock recovery but still rooted, would a t-mobile rep know this? and if they did would it be a problem?
If I did get back to the stock recovery, could I unroot it? I remember buying a triangle app or something ,that reset the flash counter on this phone? does that ring any bells? lol

Look at the jump contract. I looked at it briefly when I signed up for it. If i remember correctly there are 3 conditions to exchange your phone.
1. no water damage
2. screen isn't cracked
3. it turns on
I didn't see any sort of refusal of service if the phone is rooted.

The guy told me yesterday that it can't be rooted, he said "we will check" all night last night till like 4am, I was reading and working on getting the GS4 into shape and ready to go.. I followed those directions above that I posted the link for and it worked awesome..
I go and trade my phone in today the guy just made sure it went to the setup screen after you factory reset it.. That was it, lol.
Now its on the GS5 this thing is a beast so far, I love that I can wash it I dropped it into my pool (3 feet deep) for a minute or so and it held up just fine! put it under running water same thing, no water inside the battery compartment! Sure its not worlds better than the GS4, but I don't think I'm gonna rom this one, I will root it eventually because I tether about 15+ gigs a month Well, later all, hope to see you follow me over to the GS5 forums one day.. or maybe wait until the GS6?
To anyone's knowledge, has anyone ever been refused a JUMP upgrade due to a tripped KNOX counter?

It's hard to prove a negative...but I read this board daily. I read every topic regarding trade in adns warrenties.
I have never seen anyone talk about being denied a trade in on XDA due to KNOX.
they don't check
The clerk handling returns/exchange is instructed to check just 2 points:
The phone powers up
The IMEI/ESN is the same as what you claim, they check behind the battery, they don't even check to confirm the software IMEI matches the sticker,

As far as I can tell it's a "no" for now. Anyone aware is this is going to persist or are we still on a "not right now but but they could start checking for KNOX any day now" status?
I have a GS4 and I don't think I'll upgrade until winter at the earliest... But I REALLY REALLY want to root my phone.
What version of android are you using? If you were on 4.3 or lower you could do something like this:
