I'm using the latest calkulin e4gt rom. The kernel it came with is rogue something. I'm wondering if I can use Lostkernal with this rom because I keep losing signal. Will I lose battery performance? How exactly do I switch out kernels?
Many thanks, new rom user.
Samsung longest phone name ever 4g touch
You can flash another kernal. Use Clockworkmod to flash it.
This video is a bit old, but it's an easy tutorial to follow:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZWyJ4N01Is
I'm not sure if LoSt kernal will affect the battery any differently than rogue, but I suspect it won't.
If LoS is that bad of an issue for you, and you haven't flashed the eg31 modem in the past, go look for how to install the new EK02 modem in the development forum. It appears to be the new modem to solve LoS.
Pretty much all our kernels are interchangeable so far. Just do a backup to be sure.

I have been reading a ton, but can't find a straight answer.
Is there a way to go from EG31 -> EK02?
I have seen the zip, but it says from EG30 only. Is there a way to go:
EG31->EG30->EK02?
And, have people been happy with EK02? Getting rid of LOS?
The only way, currently, to upgrade to a EK02 modem is if you are on the EG30 modem.
As far as LoS, there's a thread here in general about it. Seems as if it's still an issue (on non stock kernels).
EG31 -> EK02 ROM/Kernel - yes
EG31 -> EK02 Modem - no
Just to add, when the EK02 update is officially pushed out, a full system TAR will likely come very soon thereafter that the dev community will get its hands on. So while there's no way to go from EG31 to EK02 modems currently, it shouldn't be too much longer (sometime this month) that we'll have a full EK02 modem to flash.
Thanks guys for clarifying.
And yes, I did mean EK02 modem
So i dont understand why we cant flash the mdoem over the other one like on an epic.
Will it not allow you to flash it, or will it just brick you until you odin back to eg31?
Like what happens when you try to flash ek02 and your on eg30
And if it gives an error, couldnt someone edit the eg31 modem files so that odin thinks its eg30, "a name field" or something?

Tried it. The check sum is more complicated than that. Not sure what's being verified. Some sort of hash.

No, I meant it the way I wrote it.
If you are using the Sprint OTA update, then it'll only work on EG30.
However, folks here have applied the OTA EG30->EK02 to an EG30 system, then pulled a full EK02 ROM and full EK02 Kernel, placing them in ODIN tar files and CWM update.zips. Since those are full pulls, they can be applied on top of any ROM/Kernel, even custom ROMs and Kernels.
Now that Sprint is pushing out the official EK02 over the air, we will be able to pull the modem from the newer code. So, now - officially - we will be able to start going from EG31 straight to EK02 modem's. I haven't heard any real strong "advantages" to going to EK02 from EG31, however, if you're running an EK02 kernel. There have been a few posts with users saying their D/L speeds were slower after upgrading to EK02. Might be something to consider, unless you're still getting LoS with EK02-based kernel and an EG31 modem.

Would have been nice if that were true, but unfortunately the EK02 pushed today was still only an incremental update predicated on EG30. So, no, those of us on anything but EG30 (i.e. EG31, EG12, previous EK02) still will not be able to upgrade to the latest pushed version. And it looks like (based on the two leaks and lack of EG30) Samsung may not be presenting us with any complete tars at all. That would be very bad. Hopefully someone figures out a way to get us all back to original EG30.

There was a leaked version of the radio, EG31, and some of us decided to risk it to see if it fixed any of the LoS and other issues, not knowing we would be stuck there. Fortunately EG31 works well enough for most of us, just gets a little "claustrophobic" being stuck on the same modem indefinitely.

EK30 modem is now available for flashing (as of today.) It's now possible to go from EG31 -> EK02.
There is now a CWM update.zip to flash the EK02 modem on top of ANY existing modem WITHOUT needing to revert to EG30 first.
Serial flashers rejoice!
update-modem-EK02-FULL-CWM.zip
IMPORTANT: Only EK02 kernels and higher support FULL modem flashes (which these are). Earlier kernels only support PATCH modem flashes. That means you need to be on EK02+CWM or EL13+CWM to run these CWM modem flashes. It has nothing to do with the modems themselves, it has to do with the kernels. If you try to flash FULL modem flashes in earlier kernels it will just hang for a long time and timeout. If you press-and-hold the power button while it is hung (wait 2 minutes before doing that), it'll reboot the phone and you will be on your old modem.
Testing was done using chris41g's EK02+CWM, and EL13+CWM stock repacked kernels (these are the ones installed by the Auto Root Thread) but should work on any stock-derived EK02/EL13-based kernels. Recompiled kernels may or may not work, weren't tested.
I also created CWM update.zip's for EG30, EG31, EK02, and EL13.
They are available in the Resource Section #a13 (2nd post) of the Auto Root Thread and also in my signature.
I've also updated the Wiki DB.
Enjoy!
I am confused. How was this accomplished with only a delta?

Damn...I could have used this earlier today to get back to EK02 from EL13. Great work man, this will definitely be helpful.

Which kernel are you using? Are you using CWM? It needs to flash in CWM, not stock recovery.
Just to test your scenario out, I was running
EK02 Modem, EL13+CWM Kernel, EG30 ROM
I booted into CWM recovery and installed EG31 Modem using the first post.
Rebooted the phone, went to menu->about phone, verified EG31 Modem (EL13+CWM Kernel, EG30 ROM)
I ran a speed test over 3G then enabled WiFi and ran a speed test on that. Both were normal.
I then booted into CWM recovery again, and installed the EK02 Modem using the first post.
Rebooted the phone, went to menu->about phone, verified EK02 Modem (EL13+CWM Kernel, EG30 ROM)
Again ran a speed test over 3G then enabled WiFi and ran a speed test on that. Both were normal.
As an aside, with all 4 modems (EG30, EG31, EK02, and EL13) sitting on the /sdcard as full CWM updaters, switching modems has become a breeze. Takes on avg 2.5 minutes including flash and reboot time to switch to any of the modems.

EG31+CWM. Hangs for about 10 minutes then gives a generic error ending in Status 7

I'll leave my ROM alone since it doesn't affect the flash.
I will go and test your scenario right now.
So you have EG31+CWM *chris41g repack* Kernel and EG31 Modem, correct?
And the current operation that is failing for you is flashing to EK02 modem using the first post?

Starting with EK02 Modem, EL13+CWM Kernel, and EG30 ROM, I downloaded the e4gtauto-sfx.exe packaged from the Auto Root thread in my signature.
I started the Auto Root, Chose Option C (install BootImg), and Option C (EG31+CWM), let phone reboot, went to settings->about phone, verified EG31 Kernel (EG30-CL435803 ie EG30-Rev5).
I now have EK02 Modem, EG31+CWM Kernel, EG30 ROM.
I reboot into CWM and flash EG31 Modem from my signature, here it hangs trying to flash EG31.
That was the kernel I didn't test since I'm never on EG31. Figures that is the one that hangs.
Apparently it doesn't have anything to do with the EK02 modem flash. It won't flash EG31 or EG30 either.
I went back and tested EG30 since I realize I had only tested a patch upgrade from EG30. Now it makes sense. Neither EG30 nor EG31 (built 1 day apart) kernels support FULL modem flashes. They only support PATCH modem flashes. EK02 and EL13 kernels support both FULL and PATCH modem flashes.
My suggestion is to install either EK02+CWM or EL13+CWM from the Auto Root thread in my signature. Then you can flash any of the modems any of the time.
Thanks for the detailed break down. Coming from an OG Evo, things used to be much easier lol

Did the Evo support flashing full modems from CWM? I never had one so don't know.
On other platforms I had only seen patch updates also so when Samsung was supporting full updates I was thinking they were pretty on top of things. Apparently they just recently became the cool kids on the block and before they were like the other kids.
You can of course flash the FULL modems over ODIN w/o issues similar to RUU flashes on HTC.
Everything has it's caveats, if you flashed bad radios on the Evo you could potentially lose the phone's WiMax keys, making 4G unusable. ODIN is definitely a blessing for Samsung phones though. The phone is ALMOST unbrickable with Odin.

worked great for me, coming from E31, now able to run E13,
really appreciate it
Do you have to be running Chris's repacked kernel to use this? Does it work with the Rogue kernel and their recovery or you need to flash the stock repack? I am on EL13 and just wanted to know in case I want to roll back unless EK02 modem will flash over EL13 with a problem anyway....

I don't remember the Rogue naming conventions, there was one with a custom kernel and the other with stock repacked. The stock repacked should work as long as it is an EK02 or EL13-based kernel. The custom one may or may not, I don't know, wasn't tested.
Why is this in general?

I put an older CleanGB EI22 based rom back in Dec 2011 and the phone is having issues so I want to go back to unrooted stock.
Is this what I use (EL30) Official EL30 Stock Tar: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501424
Also, is the latest OTA version from Sprint. I don't have an EPIC 4G, so I haven't been following what the latest is.
thanks!
or is FC09 the latest official tar

EL30 or FC09 will work for you. FC09 is the latest official but has not reached everyone for the OTA yet. It is a 6 week long release.

Okay. I'm not new to android by any stretch of imagination but I am new to this phone. I just received the samsung galaxy s2 epic 4g touch on virgin mobile (SPH-D710vmub) running 4.1.2 out of the box and I was wondering what the full steps are to get FI27 or whatever the newest/best ics modem would be, best root method, best recovery, and I want to flash DU AOKP and not have any fears of bricking through the process. Can anyone help? I would greatly appreciate it

Hello there,
I just to picked up the galaxy s 2 on virgin mobile. I'm running an ICS modem. I simply flashed the modem (zip file) in cwm. I'm running the revolt ROM with a ICS modem. I flashed the wrong modem before and my data was gone. I also made a nandroid backup but when I went to restore it failed. If your going to run the stock ROM I would flash a ICS modem. It worked for me and now I have great 3g speeds in my area. Hope this helps
