I had a question about a charger - I'm interested in getting a second charger for the Vibrant. I see that the charger that comes with the Vibrant says it has an output of 5.0V and 0.7A.
If I have an old LG charger that has an output of 5.1V and 0.7A, would that work. Could it damage the battery in my Vibrant, in anyway.

Not sure about your old charger, but it should work. Try it out at your own risk though.
I did want to comment on the chargers for the Vibrant. The phone seems to want a lot of current to charge properly. I was using an older 5V 500mA charger that served me well with my G1 and older BB Pearl. I had the Vibrant on it and it wouldn't charge fully. I also noticed the same thing when I would hook-up the vibrant to my notebook (typically 500mA max per port).
The good news is that there are a lot of cheap 5V 1A chargers on eBay. Just make sure to check a charger's spec before buying one.

I have used my iphone charger a couple times. Very small letters on the back but I think it says it is 1.0A. Worked fine bit I went back to my vibrant charger. I also found a car charger at a circle K for $9.99. Probably could of got one a little cheaper on ebay but it was there and i needed a charge...lol

Tried my old charger .. it works but is really slow compared to the one that came with the Vibrant. Probably going to end up purchasing an extra one for when I travel.
Personally I don't mind something charging slower when I travel as long as I'm getting more power to the phone than I'm using of course.

The extra 300mA will not damage the phone. Most smart phones require 700mA-1A to charge properly. But be careful, cheapo charger has potential to fry your phone. Anytime I buy a charger from ebay or cheap vendor, I plug it in to my old MP3 player for a week before I use it with my newer devices.
I have the same one that you see on monoprice. I've been using it for almost 2 years with no problem at all, YMMV tho.
I'd recommend this one. Looks identical to the charger that comes with my 3GS. Works well, I use it every day at work for more than 6 months now. Again, YMMV.

the max charge rate for a Li-ion battery is 1C. So you could charge at up to 1500mA.
I ordered that exact charger a few days ago.

The amperage rating only tells you the *maximum* possible output. The device (your phone) controls the current draw. As long as the voltage matches (5v), you can use a charger with any amperage rating which is 700mA (0.7A) or higher.
(Note that this only applies to chargers that your phone plugs into. You have to be more careful with the self-contained spare-battery chargers (where you remove the battery from the phone and put it into the charger). But those are normally battery-specific anyway.)
Also, you *might* risk damaging the battery through long-term usage of a charger that can't supply at least the minimum amperage (such as the sfsilicon's 500mA transformer). The end of a charge cycle draws the most power which is probably why sfsilicon couldn't fully charge his battery.

that might explain why my laptop wouldn't always charge to 100% - first few times it did, and i'd find the notification msg when i'd close the laptop, but last few times it didn't
learn something every day
as i use the vibrant tethered every nite while browsing (which is when it was charging), any problem with finishing the charge with the samsung wall charger? ie interrupting the charge when i take it off the laptop?

There are 2.1A usb adapters, but I don't think microUSB can take advantage of it. The one you linked is a 1A, which is the same as the wall charger HTC gave with the phone. I'm currently using a 1A usb adapter in my truck.
Ok that's probably what I'm looking for then. Are there wall chargers greater than what came with the phone that I can take advantage of?
Your best bet would be to try the USB adapters made for iPads. The Apple products can utilize the 2.1A chargers with their sync cables, but I'm not sure if a microUSB cable can though. I have some 2.1A wallchargers from some of my Apple products, I'll test them later and let you know what I find out.

Guys, unless you mod the usb adapter 5V spec, you aren't doing squat with a "high power" adapter. The device has an input impedence that will draw a certain amount of current at 5v., and that's it.
Standard battery: 1400 mAh
Time to charge: 4 hrs (according to manual)
That's 1400/4 = 350 mA.
Most adapters on the market spec more than that, they're usually 500 mA or above. And again, unless you boost the volts, you're not going to be able to push more than 350 mA or so.
So don't waste you're money.
On the other hand, if your going to share a car outlet with another device like mp3 or ipod, then yeah, you'll need a higher output, two port, adapter.
Edit: It just occurred to me that if you're using the phone heavily while charging, then yeah you may need more than 500 mA. My currrent widget shows the phone can draw another 250 mA or so during use. That plus the charge totals to around 600 mA. But depending upon design, the phone may not be able to pull in all 600 mA. A test with a current meter would be real interesting.
The charger shipped with the Thunderbolt is a 1 Amp charger.
If I use a 500 mA charger the Current Widget shows a +450mA charge current. However if I use the 1A charger, I get a charge current of about +850mA.
Given that the google navigation gobbles over 400mA when running, you need a car charger with greater than 500mA capacity of you want the phone to charge at the same time.

You're making the incorrect assumptions that the charging rate is constant, and charging is 100% efficient. Li-ion batteries can be charged at up to a 1C rate (i.e. 1.4A for a 1400 mA cell). Add the power drawn by the phone itself, and a 1.8 Amp charger might not be unreasonable (1.8 A is the specified limit for micro USB connectors). Whether the phone will actually do a maximum rate charge, I don't know.
This, from a TI Application Note (Google for SLAA287, board won't let me post links):
A Li-Ion battery charging process consists of three stages:
· Slow Charge: Pre-charging stage using current of 0.1C
· Fast Charge: Constant current charging stage using current of 1C
· Constant voltage charging stage
During the slow charge stage, the battery is charged with a constant low charge current of 0.1C, if the battery voltage is below 2.5V. The slow charge stage is rarely used during the charging process of a Li-Ion battery.
The fast charge (constant current) and constant voltage charging are the most important stages during a recharge process. Most Li-Ion batteries have a fully charged voltage of 4.1 or 4.2V.
The battery is first charged with a constant current of 1C until a battery voltage reaches 4.1 or 4.2V. The firmware continuously checks the charging current by sensing the voltage at the current sense resistor (Rsense) and
adjusts the duty cycle of PWM output from the MCU. The battery's voltage is checked frequently.
Whenever found the battery's voltage reaches 4.1 or 4.2V, the charger will switch to constant voltage charging mode. The battery is then charged with a constant voltage source at a fixed battery voltage of 4.1 or 4.2 V...When the charging current falls below 0.1C, the charging process must stop.

I second monoprice.
I tried bunch of cig to usb car charger and none matched advertised output... They all showed Charging (USB). I now use AC inverter and it charges just like a wall charger.

I suspect you need to find one which properly follows the USB Battery Charging Specification. That link is to the most recent version, which came out on 7Dec2010 (remember Pearl Harbor!). Version 1.1 is easier - a Dedicated Charging Port is indicated by shorting together the data lines (the two middle conductors on a full sized USB connector. By doing so, it indicates the device may try to draw up to 1.8 A of current (although a dedicated charging port is allowed to limit the current to less than that, it must provide at least 1.5 A).
I bought a cheap USB hub with 5 ports, used an exacto knife to cut the traces going to the data lines (the middle two) on all the ports, and then shorted them together on each port. It's now no longer a USB hub, but a USB charger with 5 ports I can used to charge stuff (phone and Bluetooth, quite often). The AC adapter which it came with does 2 Amps. My Thunderbolt says "Charging (AC)" when plugged into it.
So, if you can open up one of your adapters, just solder a jumper between the middle two contacts (make sure they're not connected to anything else).
Just got the Rocketfish premium microUSB at Best Buy and it has a captive coiled cord and a USB port. TBolt says "AC plugged" and reads +670 mA.
Good choice on the Motorola Rapid Charge - I've burned through 3 other cheap car chargers trying to keep my phone alive while using Google Nav and this is the first one to work!

the touchpad charger is rated at 2A max output and it charges the phone FAST.
around 5% in 10 minutes. so full charge in 3 hr and 15 minutes.
I have been using this for a few weeks now. No apparent issues, however could i be frying the battery?

I was using an Apple iPhone 4 charger (1A) before on my Nexus S as it was faster than the oem as well.
I picked up the HP chargers at Staples on clearance (obviously) for like $8.
I use the same time charger, and I see no negative effects. Your better off using it rather than some ebay knockoff.

3hrs 15 minutes means it is charging the phone at a rate of approximately 600ma/hr (1875mah battery /600 mah charge rate = 3.13 hrs) which is exactly as it should be. Phone will not charge at more than 600-700mah no matter what the charger outputs so you have "power to spare" (but not power to use). So it is perfecly fine. You could use a 100AMP charger if you wanted since the phone will only "take" what it was designed to take. Charge rate is current limited by the chipset in the phone + the kernel for protection. If it were using the full 2amps it would fully charge from ZERO to FULL in around 50 minutes then probably explode.

are they not in the 500-600 mAh range? when i first got my phone the battery was dead drained. too more than 8 hrs to get full. this was with my Nexus S charger.
I'm not saying the phone is drawing a full 2A of current, but im sure the higher rating doesn't hurt. realistically that's the MAX peak this charger can pump out. Real world, usage, it probably barely breaks 1A on any given day.
on a related note, i KNOW USB cable quality and length play a big role in charging speed.
using an extension USB cable, or cheap one, can easily DOUBLE the charging time.

Good question. The output rating of a charger is rated when it is NOT UNDER LOAD. When you put it under load output drops. A 2amp (2000mah) charger under load will drop as well but maybe to 1500 or even 1000mills. The 1000mills is still above the max charge rate of the device and will of course charge it faster than the 500mill charger when it drops to maybe 400mills.
If it took 8hrs either the charger was defective (low output) or way over rated or something else was at play. Also manufacturers will want to charge as slow as possible to avoid overheating or even fires or explosions.
I have a 120amp 12vdc power supply that I used to use for a 300 watt ham radio amplifier which is hooked up to a multiple cig lighter adapter socket which I use to charge my various multiple devices (iPad 2, 2 cellphones and a couple BT earpieces). I use 3 Scoche 2.5amp output USB cig adapters and the most the phone draws is around 600mah (again, not accurate but reference).
The only way to test is to put a meter across it while charging and see how much current is being pulled. The ATT Galaxy S2 was tested that way and was pulling less than 650mills with a high output rated charger.
Has anyone had any success with after market rapid charging solutions? I see the OEM model number of the charger that came with the phone is ETA0U61JBEGSTA.
Has anyone found a generic equivalent for this charger? The last 2 amazon ones I bought were really slow charging & took over 4hrs to fully charge.
I use the monoprice 2.1 amp charger it works great. It may damage your battery but to me it doesn't matter I'll buy a new battery in a year for $15 if I have too.

After seeing this article http://www.androidcentral.com/acces...mium-charger-rapid-charges-android-phones-too last year, I picked up a couple for $10ea. from an online source that was going out of business. They are available for ~$15 today. This is the only thing BB offers that rocks.
For an inexpensive but quality solution, try Monoprice.
Edit: If I forget to plug in at night, in the time it takes me to get ready to leave for work, I am at 90% or better.
Just FYI, for those commenting about using chargers higher than 1A (1000 mAh), the stock kernel will only allow 1A of current to reach the battery regardless if the charger is of a higher capacity. However there are custom kernels (such as Perseus) that allow this value to be overridden, so that the battery can be charged with more than 1000 mAh of current. It is recommended to not charge the battery with a value higher than 0.7 of the battery's total capacity. For the stock 2100 mAh battery, you will want to set the charging value to 1470 mAh or less.

It wont damage your device. If you havent altered stock parameters than it wont draw more power than 1 amp

I seem to remember seeing there was a cable mod to make the S3 charge faster? actually pull in more juice quicker? As I recall you had to modify the USB cable with a resistor in the right place?
I have plugged my S3 in a 2.1amp charger and I don't see it charging any faster than the 1.0amp charger. My wife's iPhone 4S however charges MUCH faster on the 2.1amp charger vs the 1.0amp charger
I'd like to figure out a way to make the S3 charger more quickly using a 2.1amp (or 1.0amp) charger if that's possible.... but I didn't book mark the thread when I saw it and can't find it again
Just wondering because I don't want to mess up my battery but would rather not have to buy another car charger if I don't have to.

I would use it personally, but hopefully someone in the know can give a better answer.
I would compare the amp against the charger.
if it's less which most car chargers are, than you are ok..
only prob. you'd have is if a charger was putting out too much amp and toast the battery.

However don't use a charger that doesn't have enough power to charge the device, as the device could draw more power than the charger can provide and you risk catching the charger on fire.
This is how MacBook chargers work anyway. For example you can use an 85 watt charger to charge a 45 watt MacBook but you should not use a 45 watt charger to charge an 85 watt MacBook. (I have a few MacBooks that's why I used that reference).
I would assume cell phone chargers are the same concept.

Yep. A device will only pull the current that it needs, so high-powered PSUs on low-current devices is fine and dandy. The only difference in electrical output that would fry the phone would be voltage, but since all USB chargers "are supposed to" put out 5VDC, you're safe.
As for using chargers with less than sufficient current, I can only speak to my experience. Personally, I've never had an issue charging any of my more beefy devices (Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus, or HTC One) off of an old 500ma charger that came with my Galaxy S (or a car charger with that same output, for that matter). The devices just charge slower. The PSU gets noticeably warm, but I'd never say it got hot to the point where the threat of combustion was even remotely possible. And as for the comparison to the MacBook charger, you're talking a difference of 40 watts, whereas these little USB chargers have a difference of maybe 2.5 watts (from the 500ma to 1A models). Not a lot of power there, really.
That said, if I were to buy a new one, I'd definitely get a charger that has the output spec to match or exceed the device's OEM charger.
I have been using the Moto charger (both USB and car, borrowed from previous Razr Maxx) and they both work great. No issues.
Your phone will regulate the power so you will have nothing to worry about with almost any charger. I plug my phone into my tablets charger all the time which is 2.1a and have never had a problem. My HTC DNA was the only one that had an issue, it would say it's not the proper charger and it's enabling slow charging. Long story short, you should have no issues
