So I tested out the Verizon Galaxy Nexus at Columbus Circle in NYC. I was surprised at how light the phone is compared to it's size. I was also surprised at how thin it is (the photos online make it seem thicker than it actually is).
The phone is light and made of plastic but it didn't feel cheap like the T-Mobile Galaxy S2 next to it did.
The phone is not completely black, it's more of a very dark gray.
The screen looks amazing, very sharp and great colors. YouTube has an option to force streaming in High Quality even when not on wifi. The software buttons also hide themselves a few seconds after the video starts.
There was no SIM inserted in the phone but the Wifi speeds were 19,800kbps download (can't recall what the upload speed was).

i think the VZW model looks better. that and i still can't believe the GSM model is only 16GB when i thought that 32GB wasn't enough.... considering that i can download 1GB in 5 minutes(& have unlimited data)

heh... i had an iphone back in the day... i used to fall asleep at night while letting it stream music & when i woke up the next day it was still on streaming.... tried that once with my old Thunderbolt & remember getting up in the night to use the restroom(a few hours later) and the phone was already dead.... and considering that my Rezound only lasts about 2 1/2 hours(constant use) i'm not expecting much more from the GN.

damn thats a let down well the it has 1850mah battery and iphone only has 1400mah so lets see how it performs
LTE radios all use a lot of power, its endemic to first generation chipsets. The VIA chipset in the Gnex is no different and radio performance in general is mediocre in poor signal areas, compared to my Bionic or any of my other Motorola devices. The Qualcomm LTE chipset on the Thunderbolt is abysmal in this regard and battery life suffered horribly as a result.
None of the current LTE phones is going to deliver really decent battery life until the second generation chipsets appear next year.

And the iPhone doesn't have LTE, and has a 3.5" screen. That helps.
You can't even compare. 2 different OS's and completely different devices.

So, I've been reading so much on the charge and thunderbolt. With regards to the 4g and started feeling like I made the wrong choice. Well, i popped in the Verizon store to see these two phones and found the Charge felt very cheaply made. The Home buttons felt very "loose". Also did a small test with the speed and my dinc2 was barely slower than the 4g bolt on loading websites. I do like the feel of the bolt, as it's very similar to the Dinc2 screen and software. Long story short my after playing with all 3 phone, I feel very comfortable with my choice. The 4g as I saw it doesn't save much time at all with regard to web surfing. That could all change in time though lol.

me too...I really need wireless tether and netflix....only reason I got this phone to replace my inc1 was for the global since I'm out of the country often
I have to admit, I have not yet once doubted the purchase of the DINC2.
The TB didn't interest me because of some of the issues it had. I did briefly contemplate the Casio G'Zone (or whatever it's called). And I've sworn up and down there was no way in hell I'd ever buy another Samsung phone, so that left the Charge out. Plus, I don't need 4G. So the DINC2 just made sense.
Yeah, I paid full price for it the day after it was released, but after nearly six months of the instability and bugs of the Droid 2 Global, it was an investment well worth it to get a stable phone.
Love my Droid Incredible 2...with or without root.
The Charge buttons were ridiculous. Very big and felt like they could fall off. It might be because it was a demo. If thunderbolt didn't have all the issues, i would definitely want it. I feel better after going in and trying the other phones out, since buying the Dinc2 was a bit of a whim

I love my Dinc2 its my first smart phone and i'm in love with it. Although i am a little hesitant about not being on the 4g network. The things i'm reading about the TB Charge and Revo make me wanna stay with the Dinc2 plus it was 50$ cheaper and I didn't have the extra money at that time. Just afraid in the two years i'm contracted to it i'll regret not being able to use 4g.

One of the bigger reasons that I didn't go 4G/LTE is my concerns about reliability on that network still. 3G is still rock solid.
I guess I still don't understand why people need/want [email protected]/s over [email protected]/s? What do you do on your phone that would need anything over 2MB/s?

I could see it from a tethering perspective. Beyond that, everything I've bothered to stream has usually streamed just fine over 3G.

Good question. Tethering is an obvious answer, but with Verizon cracking down hard on tethering, I'm staying with 3G.
LTE is still very much in its infancy. I'd rather have better battery life.

The only reason I'd want 4G is for tethering. Still, I've tethered with my Eris and didn't feel like it was terrible speed. Using the internet on my I2 has been significantly better than my Eris simply because the device itself is faster. My roommate still has his Sprint Hero (equivalent to the Eris) and watching us browse websites shows completely night and day differences in experience. The 3G didn't slow me down on my Eris, the hardware did.
Verizon is going to have issues in some area's anyway. My area has some older switches and won't see 4G for quite some time, and it's the 2nd biggest city in Illinois. I'm opting for the Dinc2 as soon as the bootloader situation gets figured out. I'll hold off for a 2nd gen 4g chip that doesn't make the phone bulky and drain batteries to death.
I had a T-bolt and returned it after 14 days. It was fine in Mexico where I had limited data access, but as soon as I got to the US and it got within range of 3G or 4G, the battery drained far too quickly. I got 30+MB/s at one point (RDU airport, terminal A), but most places were in the 20+MB/s range, like Detroit and a couple of other places that I forget.
I returned it for an iPhone4, which is not a bad phone (aside from having to deal with Apple and the idiotic form/function design issues), and gets great battery life. After three weeks I got assigned to Bahrain support duty, so I eBay'd the iPhone for $515 picked up a Dinc2 as a global phone because I had a Dinc1 for a while and really liked it. So far it hasn't been bad. I did the temp-root/bloat-freeze to get rid of the most annoying stuff and loaded AWD Launcher to get the screen like I want it, as well as a Seidio 1750 battery for a bit more usage time.
I'd really like to have more ROM options like my Dinc1, and if I wasn't assigned to a global support role I'd probably go back to the Dinc1, but the Dinc2 is a decent phone.

The Galaxy S III is Samsung's new flagship smartphone and it's finally broken cover at the company's stand-alone Mobile Unpacked event here in London. With a steady stream of fakes, outright leaks and even event rescheduling, Samsung's claimed almost crazy levels of interest for its new smartphone. Weighing in at 133g (4.7 ounces) and whittled to 8.6mm at its thickest, the rounded-off design has more than a little bit in common with its Galaxy Nexus cousin. Of course, it's Samsung's new 1.4GHz Exynos 4 Quad processor doing the legwork, and there's 1GB of RAM to help it out. The display has been bumped up in size to a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED affair, sporting a 1280 x 720 pixel count. Happy snappers will have an 8-megapixel rear shooter to play with, and a 1.9-megapixel eye on the front will take care of those video calls. If you were wondering about radios, it's launching with HSPA+, but there's an LTE version in the cards. As for the interface, it's TouchWiz on top of Android 4.0 again, and there's new gesture functions to help you get around. So, there it is, the phone we've all been waiting for (until the next one) but that's not all, be sure to check our hands-on coverage and additional features for the in-depth breakdown.

ALSO, I wish it had the 12mp shooter, but we will see what GSIII is for the states, namely Sprint.
I'll change my screen density to 160. Now I got SIII.
Anyone know the battery mAh yet? Interesting device, looks like it's only got a home button now? Unless it pulled an international SGSII and has the menu and back button on the sides. Can't tell.

The TW ICS status bar is pretty bad looking, hardly a difference from Gingerbread. They would've gotten me more excited with an AOSP style status bar, but I guess that's something I'll have to do, myself.

So far, HTC One X us version/ Evo 3g lte looks better -
better screen, better camera.
The only thing this phone still has is samsung hardware accelerated apps + possible faster cpu/gpu.
I was actually looking forward to this, but am a bit underwhelmed, its just meh to me for some reason lol.
I don't think its that much of an upgrade from our phone to the SGIII.

So I've tried various things, disabled apps I don't use such as Email, Exchange Services, News and Weather, and even disabled the Gallery app and using QuickPic instead (on GB, Gallery was known to waste battery for no reason). Also turned off data and connected via 2G only to save battery, have brightness the lowest possible, turned off auto sync, and yet, still don't have near as good battery life as on my GB running LG G2x.
So my question is, what do you guys do to get as much battery life as possible?

jk. what kind of battery life are you getting? Maybe run stock?
Ha it seems to not have to do with the wireless settings at all, drains either way.
And with GB on LG G2x, got 12 hours of constant, heavy use. Music, XDA, Pulse, FB, some gaming, texting all day, definitely used my phone.
Now, with AOKP+Franco, getting around 8 hours of light usage, just messaging and music. Wi-fi on for not even an hour, and didn't play with it much.
And maybe I'll give that a try, I just love all the options in AOKP.

Might try Apex, battery lasted nicely if I remember correctly the few hours I ran stock. Apex is basically stock, with tweaks and customization.
I know for most phones, AOSP and similar based roms almost never provide as much battery life as the stock software w/wo tweaks. There are some exceptions, but maybe ICS is different. Going to flash Apex and tell you how it goes tomorrow.
I was actually just reading a thread someone posted about this. This guy has some pretty good instructions, I would read this:

try the "on deman" governor , it worked very well for me...
Yeah there's nothing you can really do man. SAMOLED just takes up so much more battery than our old G2X's IPS. That's pretty much the only difference. Probably nothing web can do. I bought 3 spare 1750mAH batteries plus an external charger all for 13 bucks to compensate. That's the only way for me to fix my battery issues.

It is what it is. It could improve in the future, but oled has more visual advantages than LCD. I wouldn't get my panties in a was over it though. And just to throw it out there, bigger pled screens use more energy than a comparable LCD because of the pixels that are lit. The LCD screen is more constant because of back light.
...of the people, by the people, for the people...
Thanks for that, will definitely keep that mind when buying a new phone down the road. Hopefully not too soon.

It appears that at lower brightness values, it's not the screen that's causing power drain. Though indeed, current S-LCDs are about 3 times more efficient than OLEDs when displaying white at same brightness.
not bad for me

Yeah, the battery life for our phones is not the greatest, I've found a spare battery to be a must for longer days. I do get better battery life than what you're seeing though, an average of about 4 hours screen on per charge, with about 15-17 hours of standby using the standard 1750 mAh battery.

Yeah... it's crazy. It's the one hindrance of smartphones... 4G + 4hour + display time would be ideal. FCC should make a mandate about battery life... "Must exceed 5 hours with the display on full brightness with a low signal 4G"

Yup, the GSM guys get much better battery life.
My VZN Gnex has less than 2 hours screen time with mixed LTE and wifi on a good signal. That said, I'm still going to complain no matter how many people say to switch to 3G. I believe consumers buy products because they should be good, not so they can make sacrifices after purchasing a product. As of yet, the VZN crowd doesn't have much of a choice for Nexus devices, so Gnex it is.
Make do with what ya got and don't let some battery life stop you from enjoying your phone. Just charge your phone if you get the opportunity and don't let it bother you.
Other phones are worse, some r better. No one says u can switch to a phone with better stats. I'm not complaining cuz I come from a droid charge where ubhad to tweak the crap out of it to get 2hrs of screen on time.

These kind of threads are discouraged. There are at least a couple dozen different combinations achievable and there is no reason for a thread for each. Just enjoy what you have.
Battery stats is always a relative statistic. You're just using less power from other areas.

Android has a BIG problem, or maybe the more accurate statement is the companies who manufacture Android devices do. Am I the only one who feels this way!? Definitely one of my biggest gripes about Android is the battery life. I would really like to not charge my phone everyday. I don't like the bulk of extended battery and there seems to be no end in sight.

I for one appreciate you reporting your battery life - probably didn't need its own thread (sharing the AOKP development thread would have been fine) but its good to give other users an idea of the kind of performance you're getting from your ROM/Kernel combo.
In regards to Android and battery life... Granted, its not like my Blackberry devices of 5 years ago, BUT, the devices are capable of much more. I charge my phone every night and sometimes even need a bump charge to make it through the day. Between my car charger and my office, I'm never in a pinch for some extra juice.
The way I look at it, if you want a car that puts out 500 horsepower, can't expect it to give you 40 MPG too.
Just my two cents.

Sticking with the analogy.. The problem is most of the cars being manufactured, and all of the cars worth having, are 500 horsepower now. But very few offer a larger gas tank, which would not be hard to do.
We need batteries like that of galaxy note 2, which is 3100 mah in a slim form.
Cool story OP.
This mind of threads appear almost once a week. We all know battery life is not that good for GNex. To gain 30min more battery life by trying so hard simply is not worth it.
Get an extended battery, 6 hours screen on time, problem solved.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
OP since you live only 15 minutes or so away from me, and I am on Verizon, have you done any overclocking/underclocking? Undervolting? What apps are you using? Getting great screen on time can only get you so far depending on the apps you use.
