[Q] How to get the most of out Gnex Battery - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So I've tried various things, disabled apps I don't use such as Email, Exchange Services, News and Weather, and even disabled the Gallery app and using QuickPic instead (on GB, Gallery was known to waste battery for no reason). Also turned off data and connected via 2G only to save battery, have brightness the lowest possible, turned off auto sync, and yet, still don't have near as good battery life as on my GB running LG G2x.
So my question is, what do you guys do to get as much battery life as possible?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus running AOKP+Franco

airplane mode...
jk. what kind of battery life are you getting? Maybe run stock?

Ha it seems to not have to do with the wireless settings at all, drains either way.
And with GB on LG G2x, got 12 hours of constant, heavy use. Music, XDA, Pulse, FB, some gaming, texting all day, definitely used my phone.
Now, with AOKP+Franco, getting around 8 hours of light usage, just messaging and music. Wi-fi on for not even an hour, and didn't play with it much.
And maybe I'll give that a try, I just love all the options in AOKP.

I'm in the same boat. My friends are on stock and claim they get much better battery life. I'm on AOKP with Franco and seem to be the same but I might give it a try... but love the little tweaks of AOKP that I probably won't

Might try Apex, battery lasted nicely if I remember correctly the few hours I ran stock. Apex is basically stock, with tweaks and customization.
I know for most phones, AOSP and similar based roms almost never provide as much battery life as the stock software w/wo tweaks. There are some exceptions, but maybe ICS is different. Going to flash Apex and tell you how it goes tomorrow.

I was actually just reading a thread someone posted about this. This guy has some pretty good instructions, I would read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1226016

try the "on deman" governor , it worked very well for me...

Yeah there's nothing you can really do man. SAMOLED just takes up so much more battery than our old G2X's IPS. That's pretty much the only difference. Probably nothing web can do. I bought 3 spare 1750mAH batteries plus an external charger all for 13 bucks to compensate. That's the only way for me to fix my battery issues.

Seriously? I thought SAMOLED used up less battery than the IPS. The major reason I bought this phone was for the screen... Ha.

Oled uses more energy than LCD. You fell for the marketing. They are relying too heavily that black doesn't use energy but who uses all black screen?

That's crap, this is literally the first time I've seen anyone say this since I got my Vibrant. Seems like they tricked so many people...
That's true, I keep try to keep everything dark, gonna have to invest in a extended battery I guess.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus running Apex

It is what it is. It could improve in the future, but oled has more visual advantages than LCD. I wouldn't get my panties in a was over it though. And just to throw it out there, bigger pled screens use more energy than a comparable LCD because of the pixels that are lit. The LCD screen is more constant because of back light.
...of the people, by the people, for the people...

Thanks for that, will definitely keep that mind when buying a new phone down the road. Hopefully not too soon.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus running Apex

It appears that at lower brightness values, it's not the screen that's causing power drain. Though indeed, current S-LCDs are about 3 times more efficient than OLEDs when displaying white at same brightness.

not bad for me

sorry but, if i'm not wrong the "screen on" define how much you are actively using you device
Honestly, what you are syncing / connectivity won't affect your screen on time much. The Screen is just too battery hungry.
I did get 5+ hours of screen time with AOKP / james bond...but I cheated. Reading books, white text black background.

no i know that, but i just wanted to let everyone know what was set up on my phone. my idle is fine, but if i can increase my screen on time, it would be happy. over WIFI its perfect but using it on 3g, SUCKS it right down bad.
so i would like to see your screen on times, with rom/kernal combos. im on Francos latest now.i was on lean, but it seemed to drain faster
Still haven't got much over 2.5 hours, but I do make a lot of calls and usually my screen on time is more video streaming/gaming so I guess that factors in to the battery life a bit more. AOKP m4/Lean
Sorry, what was the question? the ROM part i understand but what is "Kernal" ?
It also depends on how you use the screen. I'm sure I could get 7 hours all in one shot, but am choked if I don't get 4+ hours over 2 days.
3/4G uses more power than wifi, so you should see more screen on time when connected to a wifi network than on data.
My favourite ROMs: CM9 /w it's stock kernel, or BAMF with Lean kernel. Each ROM has customizable auto-brightness levels; can have a big impact if you use auto frequently.
The below shots are 90% on wifi, the rest on data.

5 hours was mostly from XDA, games and web browsing. I am on a Toro GNex. I limit my syncs to every 15 min, clock 350/1200 hotplugged. And I frequently monitor my wake locks and per app battery drain to insure a healthy battery life and to make sure my device sleeps like a baby. Normally if I'm using the device throughout the day with 4g data on and no wifi, I get 3-4 hours.
***edit: I do have the 2150 mA extended battery. Its not much but it does give a small bump.

Lol, the system is obviously not resetting itself.....or it was kept on idle (doubtful)...or the dude messing with the phones internal clock. Either way, nice try.

This is mine. Mostly Wi-Fi, I keep my screen on auto brightness, that was with AOKP B27 and Imoseyon's v2.5.0 experimental kernel, 230-1200Mhz, HotplugX with the stock battery.
I'd say on average I get anywhere between 4 to 5 hours. I've never gone to 0 battery, usually plug it in around 8 or 9%. Screen is usually auto or 50%, playing games on and off, cruising the store looking for good apps. I also monitor for apps running and kill stray apps.
AOKP with FuguMod kernel.

I'm using an LTE Nexus with the official Sammy ext. Battery, yet my battery life is ****. After playing temple run for about 30min in total over a typical class day and tethering for 10min, my battery is down to less than half already. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
Running on leaked 4.0.4 with latest FrancoKernel.

Well its not great either way, but the screen on and awake time in that screenshot looks more then half an hour. Looks at an estimate to be nearer an hour and a half which is a total screen on time of about 3 hours which is fair.

That's well over 30min of screen on time, and with a bad signal at the end that drains.
Doesn't seem super out of the ordinary, honestly.
In total I'd say my phone was playing Temple Run for 30-40 mins, and then frequent on-and-off with google talk and text messaging. I don't believe what its saying for the screen on is true, because it definitely looks to be on more than 50% of the time, but in reality I haven't used it more than 50%.
Are there apps that can be running in the background that's making my Nexus think that the screen is on?

No. The screen on time will be precisely (as much as it can be) displayed in that settings menu.
Why don't you put your phone down and pay attention in class?
That seems to be a big battery issue on XDA, people complain but they refuse to put there phone down for more than 5 min.

Yup, your info shows lots of screen on time and hammering the processors with playing games.
And the LTE network takes a larger toll on the battery compared to GSM/HSPA.
The stock 1750mah hour battery is only good for maybe 5-6 hours of screen on gaming hammer time. With more modest normal voice/data usage the battery can go 24-48 hours.
USB chargers are easy to keep around. Bigger fatter 3300mah batteries are another option.

I have battery life that bad when I'm in the office, but I think it is because I have very light service...not enough service that it is totally usable, but just enough that the phone keeps trying to establish a connection...
Click on display in the battery usage to get your screen on time.
Expect 2-3 hours of screen on time with the LTE Nexus.
As others have said, check your screen on time. Just to clear something up the % listed next to the object in the battery menu tells you the percentage of the battery used, not the overall battery. For example, 50% used by Screen, and the battery level is at 30% means that the screen roughly used about 35% of the overall battery, not that the screen used 50% of the total battery.
iphone 4s dont have that kind of problem.
My maguro with the 2000 mah battery lasts all day with half a charge still left over with AOKP/Franco kernel, undervolted and hotplug mod.
I'm usually on wifi though, since I have wifi at both work and home. That definitely helps a lot.

What's your take on the One X versus the Galaxy Nexus since you have both?
some of us actually work for a living, and spending my time playing with my phone isn't what i get paid to do. some of us actually use the device for phone calls and texting for a large part of the day.
i have several desktops at home, a tablet w/ a keyboard dock...not really a need to surf on a 4.6 inch screen when i'm at home.
finally, this thread is about standby battery runtime.
i have also tested how much can i actively use my phone before it runs out of juice, and that is about 1d16h with 3h40 screen on. you've made me go offtopic.
for me, there should be only one thread about these things, where people actually post collected data about consumed voltages, wakelocks, idle drain. it proves the system+customizations+user installed apps is stable enough at one point in time. and OP has a lot of stuff on background sync. indeed impressive.

[Q] Awful Battery, Not Sure if ROM or Phone

Theres what my battery usage is looking like right now, as you can see, its a steady decrease for the most part, but not a steady amount of use on my end.
I use Advanced Task Killer religiously, and even have it set to autokill. The weird thing is, my phone will get insanely hot sometimes while I'm not using it, I'll check ATK, nothing out of the ordinary, check running apps, nothing out of the ordinary, and if there is always kill it.
Right now I am running a CM10 nightly that is a few months old. Do you guys think that could be the case? I'm really not sure what else to do.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, as aimcr7 says, it must be an app that doesn't let your phone to "go bed"
As you can see in my attachment, this is how it should look like with ~30 apps installed approx.

Get rid of the task killer. They are useless and actually make your battery work harder. I'm not sure, but it looks like you don't have a solid, steady mobile signal. It looks like it goes in and out. That kills battery life.
Thanks for the replies. I got rid of ATK. I had a slight feeling it could be that because its on 24/7 monitoring apps, but I guess I just didn't wanna believe it lol. I got GSAM battery and I'm gonna run that for a few hours, see what's going on, but hopefully things will be all fixed. Thanks for the help!

#1 problem: Verizon GNex, the battery life is dreadful. Screen on time is lucky to be half the GSM version.
#2 problem: Verizon GNex. There's a factory flaw in many of them that leads to the phone getting extremely hot at the top and having atrocious battery life. Only permanent solution is sending it to Samsung to get it fixed. The temp solution that's worked for me is draining the battery dead and recharging it with the phone off. Don't know why it's worked but it keeps the heat away for about a month or two for me.
#3 problem: (you guessed it) Verizon GNex. In areas with weak or no LTE the radio will endlessly consume. Try turning the radio to CDMA only and see if you get better life. Just pop it back on to LTE when you're using it.
Yeah... these are just a couple of the reasons why there is no Verizon Nexus 4...

Well, Ingress is one of the most demanding battery game of all times, lol. I went from 95% to 75% in 45 minutes or so. I think it's normal, since Ingress is constantly using 3g, GPS and screen.

I agree with this. Task killers are really not necessary in Android. Android manages applications in RAM just fine and by removing them from run you are making your system even slower in loading them to the primary memory and thus can lead to a decrease in battery life.

Aokp and lean kernel battery life

I've gotten some awesome battery life with AOKP mr1 build 6 and Lean kernel 6.3.1 lately. Just thought I would share incase anyone else is looking for awesome screen on time. This is with stock GSM gnex battery.
Also, anyone know why Google services is so high on the list. It never used to be a month ago and I don't do anything different. Anyone else's Google apps draining more lately?

These kind of threads are discouraged. There are at least a couple dozen different combinations achievable and there is no reason for a thread for each. Just enjoy what you have.
Battery stats is always a relative statistic. You're just using less power from other areas.

OP not trying to change the subject or take away from your battery pride, but.. This is a joke. The phone stayed on for three hours and this guy is so happy about it he started a new thread. Android has a BIG problem, or maybe the more accurate statement is the companies who manufacture Android devices do. Am I the only one who feels this way!? (growing more and more bitter about it each day that it goes ignored)

Definitely one of my biggest gripes about Android is the battery life. I would really like to not charge my phone everyday. I don't like the bulk of extended battery and there seems to be no end in sight.

I for one appreciate you reporting your battery life - probably didn't need its own thread (sharing the AOKP development thread would have been fine) but its good to give other users an idea of the kind of performance you're getting from your ROM/Kernel combo.
In regards to Android and battery life... Granted, its not like my Blackberry devices of 5 years ago, BUT, the devices are capable of much more. I charge my phone every night and sometimes even need a bump charge to make it through the day. Between my car charger and my office, I'm never in a pinch for some extra juice.
The way I look at it, if you want a car that puts out 500 horsepower, can't expect it to give you 40 MPG too.
Just my two cents.

Sticking with the analogy.. The problem is most of the cars being manufactured, and all of the cars worth having, are 500 horsepower now. But very few offer a larger gas tank, which would not be hard to do.
We need batteries like that of galaxy note 2, which is 3100 mah in a slim form.
Cool story OP.
This mind of threads appear almost once a week. We all know battery life is not that good for GNex. To gain 30min more battery life by trying so hard simply is not worth it.
Get an extended battery, 6 hours screen on time, problem solved.

OP since you live only 15 minutes or so away from me, and I am on Verizon, have you done any overclocking/underclocking? Undervolting? What apps are you using? Getting great screen on time can only get you so far depending on the apps you use.
