[Q] Sleep of Death on GN - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Has anyone else experienced this on the GN?
I've had this happen twice in the two weeks since I got it.
The device is stock.
The only common thread I can think of is that in both instances I had plugged the phone into my PC via the USB cable.
I only use 3 sources to charge, my PC at home, laptop at work, or wall charge overnight.

Meh, it is the Nexus (tame dev device). The S was way more unstable. Just pull the battery and all is well.
If you want to be cutting edge then you have to take the rough with the smooth.

Never happened to mine. You might have a buggy app that doesn't play well with ICS.

Thanks lads, I'm not massively concerned, and yes, it may well turn out to be a bad app, was just posting to find out if it was more "common".
I have of course just seen another thread in this same forum dealing with the same topic (funny that my post flagged up a bunch of other threads in unrelated forums), so this'll probably be closed down...
Think I'll go wade into that other thread now

I've had it twice since I got mine, wasn't plugged in both times so for me it's not down to charging.

mine reboots everytime i try to use the picture frame widget. i select the pic, then it reboots.

The day I got my phone, I had 2 SOD's.
This morning after I woke up, it was in a SOD and 2 minutes ago, the screen went off and I had to take the battery out.
Really strange
Someone have a solution?

I noticed this issue too, whether charging from the PC or the mains charger once the phone hit 100% on the battery it would turn off and could not be started without pulling the battery. I read somewhere that resetting the phone could cure this so, as much of a pain in the ass as that is, that is what I did. SO FAR this seems to have worked for me. I was charging the phone via the USB cable to the PC yesterday and no shut off and when I went to bed last night the phone was on charge all night and again when I woke this morning all seemed good. I'm not sure if this will work for everyone suffering this issue but it worked for me (for now) so thought I would share my experience.
Good luck !

This is so weird, hasn't happened to me since that day. I was able to reproduce the issue after reading another thread on battery saving. Someone mentioned limiting background processes to 3 in Developer Options, when I did this, my phone SODed within seconds. Twice!
Think I mentioned this elsewhere and someone said he used that option with no problems so it's clearly inconclusive. I'm just going to steer clear of that for now.

This has happened to me a number of times, usually when I was multitasking while listening to the Google Music app. It's a good thing that back cover is easy to pull off and put back on.

Recurring Issue - Phone dying overnight on charger...

Ok guys, I've read all of the forum threads for this issue but have found no real answers yet.
Two days ago, I woke up one morning and my phone was dead as f**k! It had maybe 20% charge to it before connected it to the charger and hitting the sack.
Well, I wake up and like I said, the phone is completely dead. The weird thing is that when I try to plug my charger back into it (after removing it) it will not charge. I tried a different cable and it works...BUT, the orange LED that comes on when it is charging blinks rather than remaining solid.
I wake up this morning and same BS. This has only happened these past two days and I have done NOTHING to my phone to cause such odd behavior.
I know someone on here knows why this is happening...
Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated as always.
Thanks in advance!
PAinguIN
Is your charge port loose...if itisit might not be making a connection

Let it stay charged, when it is super drained it will blink, but after a few minutes it should turn solid, then you can turn it on.

Something is killing my battery over night...
Thanks for the responses guys! I have two HTC AC USB adapters and two HTC charge cables. They both work fine from my testing. But something is definitely drinking more juice from my battery than it can trickle charge at night for some reason.
I downloaded System Monitor or something like that, in an effort to see if I could pinpoint what may be hogging all of my batteries power.
But as of right now, it is charging just fine and working just fine... I did download Google+ the other day because I received an invite, I have like 100 invites if anyone wants one by the way, and that's when all of this started. I also downloaded AdFree for Android but noticed that it slowed my phone down to a crawl when it blocked an ad.
I uninstalled it right away....
I guess I'll see what happens tonight. Lol!
I'll post the results in the morning I guess.
Thanks again guys!

Nexus just dies while using it

I was using my nexus on facebok last night with a virtually full battery when fb stopped responding and a few seconds later the phone just switched off.I tried to restart it it but it would not come back on.I tried al combinations of buttons to try and reset but still nothing.I plugged the charger in to try, nothing.I left it on the side board,I forgot to leave the charger in all night.got up this morning plugged it in the charger and it turned on,left it for 5 mins unplugged the charger and it turned itself straight off again.I have a feeling that my battery has just instantly died, the phone is only about 3 weeks old at the moment.I will be charging it for a few hrs and see if it will come back alive.Fingers crossed it will. Its strange to go from a full battery to off in an instant.
Err did you try to pull the battery when the phone originally crashed.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I didn't pull out the battery as i didnt think it was nessasary. After a few hrs charge it came back on but it is worrying that this could have happened to such a new phone
This happened to my first nexus. Totally just randomly died.
I returned it as faulty.

Basically what happened was that when your phone "died" it actually stayed on but became unresponsive. Because you just left it for the whole night it drained the battery dry which is why you found it like that the next day.
Anyway next time when your phone crashes just do a battery pull and it should fix itself. The crash seems to be a common ICS bug and a few people have reported it. (including me) Hopefully Google fixes it soon.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
it's not just because it's a nexus. it's been an issue with various android-based phones over the years. granted, not a common one... just somehow something 'screws up' and you have to do a battery pull to reset the issue.
I've run android for a while now and have had various lock ups, but this was totally different. It actually locked up and turned off and no matter what buttons for reset or just a normal boot would do anything the battery was totally flat and only a charge would do anything.i could not even boot into recovery as it was flat. Its going back fire a replacement in the next few days
One thing I have noticed since it happened is the battery life has gone terrible in that it is draining very very quickly yet nothing has changed on my phone
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
I experienced this too yesterday. I was on call with headset and I had USB plug. Suddenly phone call ends and phone was dead. I have unplug from USB and pull battery.
Mine did exactly this while on charge last night. Pulled the battery and it fired up straight away. Second time its crashed since i got it. My iphone 4 only crashed once in the 18 months i had it. Guess android isnt as stable yet.
Happened to me yesterday, and then wouldn't charge. Did a battery pull then put it on to charge. When I got it back on checked Battery temp and it was 45C I think that was the issue. after half hour it was down to 31C.
Omg.. something like the G2X random reboots?
I just experienced the same problem. Using my phone and it just went black. First thought was to try powering it on. No luck. Second thought, pull the battery. No luck. Went back to my desk and plugged it into USB so it would charge. No indication it is charging. Tried turning it on. No luck. Leaving it for an hour or more and will see if that does the trick.
Googling to find this thread I actually found dozens of threads on various sites talking about this issue. Hopefully it is a bad batch of devices and quality control has rectified the situation.
Anyone have any successful resolution to this issue? I've been using my phone for around a month now.

[Q] GNex will not charge / USB Host not recognised

Hey all
Wonder if anyone can shed any light on what I think is a unique problem - in that I can't find anyone with the exact same issue.
Last weekend I took the SIM card from my GN to place in another phone I was trying out. The GN was powered back on and being used on WIFI as I was doing comparisons, shooting some video of the new phone with it etc.
Popped the GN in a drawer without thinking and left if powered on
(see if you can guess where this is going)
Messed around with the other phone for about 4 days, got my GN out of the drawer and went to put the SIM back in my GN.
1. GN would not turn on initially at all. No recovery, nothing. (solved)
Read some posts on XDA and elsewhere, people with similar issues mentioning a long (5min+) battery pull would wake her up. Dutifully I obliged and the phone did indeed wake up. However, battery was totally dead and phone shut back down.
2. GN will not accept charge from a wall charger when phone is on.
Whilst the phone seems to take a 'trickle' charge whilst powered off (battery charge animation is on), this is exceptionally slow. Took all night to get to about 50% charged to allow me to boot up and have a look around. Whilst the phone is powered on, it will not recharge. tried all sorts of official and other USB and mains cables.
3. When connected to a PC via USB, will accept charge, but error message notes that USB Device not reconised, troubleshoot? etc...
Phone won't mount. Status says it is charging over AC.
So what's up? I assume the battery died big time over the 4 days i left it. A have a new official battery in the post to resolve but... didn't anticipate the issues with USB connection etc. Worried the phone might be partially bricked/borked/knackered.
Phone is GSM 16Gb currently on 4.0.2 and totally stock. So no tinkering to date has caused this. Only event that proceeded the issue was the full battery drain.
Any hints / tips / info / moral support gladly accepted.
Really sounds like you're phone was already borked, just waiting for the right time to tell you. You might've hurt it's feelings.

Sounds like it's emotionally scarred from being abandoned for another phone and left in a cold dark danky drawer for half a week.
Have you tried reinstalling the USB drivers?
Also could try factory reset as well as try unlocking it and relocking. Worst case, send it in repair, just tell them it's heartbroken.
Heartbroken, I like it... Worse still I was testing out a Windows Phone. What a phone philanderer I am.
The drawer was nice and dry though I assure you.
How would I install USB drivers?

Assuming you're on a windows since you called it a PC..
Try and see if windows can install it for you.
Go to Start > Run > Enter "device installation" in the search > select "Change device installation settings" > Select "Install driver software from windows update if it's not found on my device"
Many have seen this type of problems, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1427539
It's a hardware issue, but is fixable if you want to change the USB port yourself
Thanks.
Then post you link to seems to be about 'phantom' charging when no cable is connected. This is the opposite in a way - it won't charge when turned on at all.
New battery arrived today. No change. Device still trickle charges when powered off, but doesn't charge on mains power, and still will not recognise when plugged into an XP or Linux machine.
Gonna try a factory reset and will update.
Let me know of any ideas and or people with the same issue. I'm still of the opinion I haven't seen a thread with this same issue. Would be happy to be corrected.
Cheers
Well, a factory reset did nothing...
Stuck...
If you read the thread, many have had this exact problem, including myself. For me the phantom charging happened a while after it refused to charge.
What the actual ****...
I just tried what can only be described as the 'toothpick trick' : pushing down the connector nub inside the USB port on the phone et voila, now acting as normal.
I can only describe that as a really ****ty example of workmanship from Samsung.
And it would be after I reset the device as well.
Do you think this one's a definite hardware issue / defect? Seems a crazy thing to happen.
I had the same problem and search as I might, I could find no solution and had to send it in for repairs. The good news is, if you send it directly to Samsung (and dont go through your carrier), they were really fast about it and I had my phone back within a week
Lol, I was the one figuring out the toothpick trick I ordered the phone from clove.co.uk the first week it was released, and had this issue haunt me after a few weeks. As I'm in norway, I was not looking forward to sending it in, so tried to fix it myself. I tried "everything", including short circiut some pins in the plug on purpose, but what finally fixed it for me was to buy a OEM USB Charging board on ebay and replace it myself.
I know, really ****ty QA at Samsung.
Not looking forward to sitting and waiting to see if this is a recurring issue.
How much of a job is replacing the board on the phone?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Not that hard. The phone is easy to pick apart, and you can just "plug" in the new card with two simple connectors.
Turns out it is a recurring issue.
Is this the sort of thing that would be classed as due a replacement phone?

I am having a very similar issue that I believe is hardware. Sometimes charges, sometimes won't. BUT it will not be recognized through USB on my PC so I can not flash stock images unroot and lock the bootloader back up. Where you completely stock and unrooted before you sent it in to samsung? I have to find some way to get it back to stock so I can get get this fixed...

Yes, I know there are many topics on this, but mine is a little different, and this appears to be the most current thread.
I have a galaxy nexus that I got from Google IO last summer. It has worked great until last week. It stopped taking a charge. When I would plug it in with the same plug I have used for months, it would show the lightning bolt, but not charge. I tried the toothpick thing but no luck and ended up breaking the usb port. So, I bought a replacment usb board off ebay and installed that. Now, when I plug the phone in, still no charge, but my computer does recognize the phone.
Then after the 4.2.2 update, I no longer see the lighting bolt, but it still does not charge. I have been charging the battery at night. I cut off the end of a usb cable and use electrical tape to tape the two stripped wires to the battery. But that only provides an 80% charge and doesnt last the whole day.
1) Not a usb port issue, but might be a motherboard issue?
2) Not a toothpick fix
3) Maybe a software issue?
4) Maybe time to buy the Nexus 4?

[Q] Strange charging problems/MTU data Doesn't work

Ok here's the rundown:
Found out about the fast charging feature of Franco's kernel.
Flashed Winner's build onto my phone.
Flashed Franco's Milestone 2 build
Purchased/played around with multiple fast charge togglers. Decided to just let Tasker do it when the phone went into car mode.
Tasker did a good job of turning on fast charge but was sloppy in turning it off.
Several days later while playing GTA I had to plug it into my computer, fast charge was on. Shortly afterwords my niece and daughter get into a fight and I put my phone down, break up the fight and take my daughter outside to calm her down (She's 14 months) forgetting about the phone.
Phone sits on the computer's USB for about an hour maybe hour and a half.
Come back, it's at about 86% realize fast charge is on and turn it off.
That night the phone won't charge.
Now, here's what I have figured out.
Phone will charge in a powered-off state.
Phone will usually charge after a battery pull.
Phone will not connect to Windows 7 machines or XP machines except to charge when off or after a battery pull. (Device not recognized, latest Samsung drivers installed)
Phone will not connect in recovery mode.
When the phone does not charge it does maintain the current battery level unless I'm using up more battery than it can replenish.
Flashing multiple roms doesn't work.
Re-flashing Franco's kernel doesn't work.
Manually entering fast-charge commands doesn't work.
Oh and when I say it doesn't charge that is on either AC or USB.
I'd send this thing back to Verizon but I can't stock and lock it.
I would guess there are at least 20 threads here with this exact issue.
Yea, sorry about that. I did look around but besides 1 or 2 threads of people doing the usual rom swapping and just going out to get a new phone. I just wanted to start a thread for real diagnostics of this problem.
Oh yea, I also found the phone while plugged in will maintain the charge on the battery but will not actually charge the battery. Next time I'm in the car I'm going to see if the charge script will enable fast charge (Maintain) off of a USB connection.
This is the real thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1427539
I did read that thread, I don't think that is the same problem I'm having. I actually had that issue before (Shorted contacts) and had my previous Gnex warrantied.
To tell you the truth this will be the last samasung phone I'm ever going to get. Samsung is great on glitz but short on substance. My previous i760 was the same story. Fantastic out of the box but once it was 4 months old it was a royal pile of junk. It's pretty bad when you send the things into warranty enough to where the call center people get to know you by your voice. We currently have 4 of these things in the enterprise I have had to call in on them 6 times already.
Edit: well **** on a stick, it is related. Good I can continue ranting on the absence of the 3 pin dock(s) with more vigor than before. Now off to Ebay to find a replacement charge board.
I know, Samsung has not handled this problem well. I have read threads where they claim water damage on this exact issue, and refuse to fix the problem under warranty. After so many issues with it, they REALLY should have fixed it under warranty.
After having this issue twice, and after replacing my USB charging board twice I know that you have the same issue in the sense that it is the USB charging board that it failing.
You really should star/comment here if you have not: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=23789

[Q] Galaxy Nexus Charging Problem Backlight Keeps Coming On

I am REALLY unhappy with this phone. Aside from the poor signal and other issues well known to the Nexus, I now have a phone that has a charging problem. Sometimes when I plug the phone in, it does not recognize that it is plugged in and will not charge. This is not an issue in itself, because if I unplug and plug back in a few times it will eventually charge. The big problem is when it is NOT plugged in. The phone will often switch between charging and not charging on the battery indicator.... even though it is NOT plugged in.
I read up on this and found that... shocker.. this is just one more issue plaguing Nexus owners. The real problem for me is that everytime the phone switches from thinking it is charging to not charging, about every two seconds mostly, the screen comes on. This results in the screen constantly going on an off and the battery draining extremely fast. It is 8:17 am, and I unplugged the phone at 6:40 this morning. In less than an hour and a half, the battery has fallen to 38% and I have not used the phone at all today. It is sitting on my desk, flashing like a disco club.
I have searched but have only found an option to keep the phone ON while charging. Is there an option or app available that will prevent the screen from lighting everytime it thinks I have plugged it in to charge? I am rooted, so any option known would be helpful.
I cannot wait to throw this thing in the garbage, but I am not happy with any of the other options currently available. I like the look of the Galaxy S3 but the Gnex has left a bad taste in my mouth for Samsung... it was my first Samsung phone and I'm not sure if I should judge the product line on all the problems I have had with this phone. I loved the HTC Incredible it just got a little old.
Can anyone help me with this problem... please! It is now at 30% since I typed the last few lines. I can sit and watch this thing draining like a bathtub.

try changing the usb port on the phone
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repairi...zon-LTE-Micro-USB-Charge-Port-Main-Mic/9641/1
I had this issue caused by water damage quite recently - it was in my pocket during some absolutely unprecedented rain here in the UK, and although it seemed I could charge it without problems, when it was off the charger it'd be confused and flash on and off as you say. I just threw it in some rice and took it out at midnight, problem solved (whether the rice was actually responsible for solving it, I have no idea). Has your phone been used in the rain or anything like that, or been in the pocket of clothes that aren't very 'rainproof' during rain? Could be it.
Is it the charger? I had a bad car charger that did the same thing. If not, I would contact Samsung and see what they can do for you.
Sent from my GSM Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I read about the water damage being a possible culprit but I cannot remember it getting wet anytime recently. It is not the charger, it does the same thing with two different chargers and the car charger. It does actually charge, thats not the problem. The problem is when I am away from the charger the screen just comes on all the time and the battery is drained rapidly. It has been having issues for a week or two now but just recently started having the problem when not actually plugged in.
Someone just needs to make an app with an option NOT to turn on the touchscreen when first plugged in.

Have you been able to fix your issue? I've had zero issues with my Galaxy Nexus for months, and now I'm having the same problem you describe. Initially I thought it was the ROM, but last Sunday I noticed that the phone will simply not sleep without being charged. The USB port appeared to be bent downward, so I used a tiny flat head screwdriver to raise the port. This seemed to fix the issue for a few minutes, but then the phone kept waking up. It's murdering my battery, and I'd like to fix this situation. The problem seems to be intermittent, and occasionally it will work for hours at a time. This leads me to believe that the problem could be internal.
I'm wondering if you tried anything else? I don't have a problem replacing the USB port myself because it seems like an easy and cheap fix. I'm not a novice when it comes to repairing phones, but I'd rather not open the device quite yet.
The new part is $8.00 shipped, and the seller is in the US. You can't go wrong. I will report back once I fix the problem.
Not really, the problem just sort of went away a week ago... I'm getting the Galaxy S3 end of October so I'm not going to replace the USB port. I messed around with the usb thing too, bent it with a knife so it wasnt touching anything. I also tried cleaning the contacts and blowing it out with air... not sure if any of these things helped or not. Like I said if I made it worse didnt matter as I'm getting GS3 soon. So for now its working but not sure why or how or how long...

If its new I'd take it back under warranty. If not, you can buy the parts on ebay and other sites... Search the Forums here, there are details. You can also search Youtube for a guide. Samsung probably would fix but it would cost much more.
Mine is better, but not sure what fixed it. The battery still doesn't last but half a day so I'm still getting the S3 in week or so.

Gnex Charging Issue
Hi all! Yes, I am another one of the unfortunate owners of a Gnex with this issue. I wanted to send out a reply to everyone that says to replace the USB charging port. I just had mine replaced, and it did not fix the problem. I have also tried different batteries, and I have read where some people are fixing this by *** gently *** bending the USB connector up ( toward the screen ). That also did not fix my problem. A few days ago I installed AOKP 4.2.1, and that was ineffective as well. I am stumped. My Samsung Fascinate was a very good phone, but the Gnex is really making me wonder if I ever want another Samsung. Has anyone found a solution for this? Unfortunately for me, I bought mine used and don't have the option of returning to Verizon for help. Thanks!
