Hello there!
I've been using my Desire Z for a long time but found the trackpad pretty useless. This is because i found the sensitivity for it pretty low so if i want to scroll down on a page it's taking forever. I also noticed if i scroll using a piece of cloth (like my shirt) the scrolling is alot faster and usable. But it's not that nice using cloth all the time.
My girlfriend has just got an new phone the Samsung Galaxy Y Pro. It also has an optical trackpad which is alot faster and usable. Also in the settings there is an option to make the trackpad faster more sensitive.
Is there any kind of application or modification to make the trackpad faster sensitiver or so?
Please let me now .
Regards
Edit: whoops i forgot to add [Q] in the topics name and i have no idea how to edit this.
Finally a topic regarding this issue!
I noticed that using certain (mostly newer, modded - CM7 for example) ROMs, the trackpad responsivess is great.
However, recently I flashed to modded stock ROM (Virtuous G-Lite) and I also find the trackpad quite useless :/
Been searching the internet for reason or solution, but found nothing
Hope to find the answer!
So if the sensitivity differs in different ROMS it's editable in a file or so. So i think it would be possible for an smart developer to create an app that edit's the values in the file to change the sensitivity with a nice slider as GUI.
Hopes it will be there someday .
I could not agree more about the trackpad, it makes me want the responsiveness of my old G1 with the trackball (but that design is prone to fail because moisture/foreign objects can easily get underneath the ball).
Would love to see some sort of customization for trackpad sensitivity become mainstream for custom roms.
I've experienced the same problem with the following ROMs:
CM 7.1.0 Stable
Virtuous v2.0.0
Virtuous G-Lite 1.6
So it's happening on AOSP and Sense based ROMs.
Just flashed G2-Slim 1.2 (see my sig for link), which seems to be the same AOSP ROM as Virtuous G-lite, but the sensitivity responsiviness seems much better.
I have no idea how the hell can it be different..
Maybe different kernels affect this?
I'm also using the G-slim ROM for a couple of days now and besides I really like the ROM the trackpad is indeed faster. But still not as fast as I would like. Let's hope some dev. Check this thread out an can help us what makes the difference in sensitivity for the trackpad!
I remember before back on android 2.2 when using the trackpad through texts depending on how fast I swiped would determine how many letters or words it would move. But now especially with roms like cm7 no matter what it'll only move over 1 letter =/ a setting to adjust sensitivity in future roms would be amazing

That's exactly my problem! I don't want to move one letter if i like to i want to move 5 letters or scroll (fast) to the beginning with the trackpad. Just like it is on blackberry's or on the Samsung Galaxy Y PRO. My girlfriend get's the galaxy y pro on her birthday (27th of December) it runs gingerbread stock and has got an sensitivity option in the settings. Maybe i can break that functionality and put it in our phones. I don't know if it will work tho because the trackpad maybe differs. Still hoping a developer will look at this thread and help us out!

I have been using 2.1 custom roms for a while now, but have now gone back to the latest stock 1.5
I have to say i am loving the quick typing I can now do on the keyboard. And general quick system responses.
What is causing the lag in 2.1 custom roms? As this is making them unusable for me.
Sent from my HTC Hero using Tapatalk
all 2.1 portings are laggy... damn
The main cause of the lag is Haptic feedback - ie the little vibration with each key press. Turn this off if you can live without it and you will get a much faster response.
The other cause of lag is as it searches for suggested words - have a play with the prediction settings to see if that makes a difference.
I have to say that I am utterly happy with VillainRom 5.4. I started autokiller on moderate settings then I used the overclock widget to force it to run at maximum speed when the screen is on and minimum speed when it is off and it works brilliantly. Full complements to the chef!

i'm under the mr bang 1.7 (too lazy for now to switch to 2.0) and its the fastest i've ever tested ...

I did have a little play with the heptic feedback, but to be honest, i didn't really see much difference. Didn't test the prediction settings, didn't think of that, but if it works on the 1.5 stock rom perfectly, without any tinkerings, it should surly be possible with the 2.1 roms.
anyhow, to be honest, although i dont like the market app on 1.5, everything else is great. So i think I am just going to wait now for the official 2.1. I am tired of rom hopping.

Even if i turned off the haptic feedback the keyboard is just darn slow....
How can it be that the same suggested words in 1.5/1.6 work so much faster...
Its really annoying that typing is this slow on the 2.1 roms, especially looking at the many sms messages is send
or does anyone have a suggestion for another (quick) keyboard that also has word suggestion/correction???
I found the HTC_IME v24 keyboard to be an improvement on previous ones and usable for me, even with haptic on. But then maybe I don't type as quick as others!

Just curious, was the keyboard the mod version? or was it a clean version?
I have the idea the lag also comes from some of the mods...
i also notice a huge lag when typing on my HTC Hero using VillainRom 5.4, its been like this in 5.2, 5.3 as well. (the only roms ive tested).
Tried turning of the feedback thing, but that didnt help at all.
Quite annoying, can someone try and find a way to fix this ? The rom it self is perfect else.

Its a paid app from the market. I think theres a free one month trial version available though
I bought Smart Keyboard Pro and I noticed a difference you can try it out if you want and if you dont like it you can get a refund within 24hrs of purchase
I don't use htc keyboard anymore. Try shapewriter. It's free. It's impressive... A really really fast way to write... Just a couple of minutes to learn how to use...
Try it from market!
Hey I have used multiple rom's in which the track pad is WAYYY to sensitive. I will swype once and the cursor will go up an entire paragraph. To name a few rom's that do this are cyanogen and miui. But I know its not my phones fault because when I switch to a desire z rom or virtuous rom, it works perfectly. Is there a way to fix this?
The trackpad is like that because it's an AOSP rom. Can't give you a better answer than that, or a solution.
I like it like this. I found it not sensitive enough with Sense. I rather take small swipes than having to take multiple ones to move from a sentence. I guess personal preference. I think maybe the kernel type can also modify it but not sure.

What version of clockwork are you running? If you are running one of the experimental versions (like 2.5.1.1) the trackball has been going much quicker, but with the older 2.5.0.5 it is a bit slower.

I would try this.
There are some things I can't get my head around.
From the screenshots of all the cool user ROMs and themes available it's clear they've been designed by clever people who use their phones a lot. So why does it appear from these shots they use the Sense launcher, and their default home screen has a big Sense clock and hardly any apps?
Presumably, like me, these people are pulling their phones out their pocket and putting them back there many times a day. Presumably also, like me, these people use a number of apps and widgets in a day that hits two figures. With this in mind, I want to be able to get to those apps and widgets easily and quickly. I.e., with as few swipes/clicks/screen presses as possible. I'm sure these people do too, right?
So that rules out the Sense launcher doesn't it, with its 4x4 grid limitation and non-resizeable widgets. Not to mention its time-consuming spin-in carousel effect every time the phone's security screen is unlocked. I haven't found anything useful the Sense launcher does that another launcher can't, at least after downloading other apps.
Furthermore, who really keeps that big clock on their home screen, when 1. you probably wear a watch; and 2. you can see the time on the top right. It seems like a silly amount of screen 'estate' to use.
Or is it that these people in fact have a more practical default home screen and it's just tradition to post the screenshots they show?
Finally, why do so many of these otherwise brilliant ROMs not mod the battery icon to show how much battery is remaining, percentage-wise? Appreciate this can be modded using the kitchen website. But surely everyone wants this info from the off, so is it not included?
Well, I'd never call myself a hardcore user - although I believe that term should be defined too, because I'm not sure it's interpreted the same way by everyone. That aside though, here's what I think on tinkering with the launchers. You buy an Android phone - be it of any manufacturer. In general, and especially considering the top level models, it can be said that there isn't much diversity hardware-wise. What does make a difference is the UI, the services integrated and how the phone handles them. (And let's exclude synthetic benchmarks for now, I don't believe they represent real-life scenarios.) So, someone knowledgeable going for an HTC device (meaning it's not chosen because of price or because of how "pretty" it is), imo, means they're attracted to Sense: those little nuances that do make the difference. Ditch the launcher and you've pretty much ditched at least about half of what Sense - of what HTC is about. But then, why did you go for HTC in the first place? And the same can be said with Samsung and SE as well, those who quite heavily modify the Android UI. Sure, you can do it, you can dump the whole customized everything...but can doesn't mean that you should: if you're a "hardcore user", however we define the rest of it, you know you'll have an easier life with a phone that runs stock Android, there's no point in choosing something customized (read: more complicated), with risk of locked bootloaders and whatnots.
And you're right: you can get the puzzle pieces from the Market (or elsewhere) to create a Sense-like experience. That's because Sense offers so many good things in one package that ppl are aiming at re-creating it, but ask this: if you want to re-create it, why not spare yourself the hassle and use the real thing right out of the box?
As for the clock: I haven't even owned, much less worn a watch for at least about ten years, nor do I feel the need. Actually they seem pretty redundant now that mobiles have become as complex as they are and being carried everywhere. But as for the battery percentage - I couldn't agree more, I wish I knew why HTC itself doesn't make it available at least as an option.
In addition to the great points made by breathlesstao, I'll add the following:
Many devs concentrate on performance, stability and removing bloat when developing their ROMs, so if you want UI mods like battery percentage etc then the option is there for you to do it yourself. It would be nice if HTC could add percentage but they do have a battery widget that shows it.
As for on screen icons, I suppose many people like a sleek looking interace with not a lot of clutter. Plus, the more you have on the homescreens the more likely you are to experience lag when scrolling between the screens. Personally I have every app I use often on one of the 7 screens and if I need anything else it's only a few presses away in the all apps menu. I like it to be set up with each page having similar types of app, so on one I have music / media related stuff, another tools / settings type stuff... etc. See my helicopter view screenshot below for an example. My screen aren't crammed, but then they're not too sparse either.
I actually like the flipclock as it integrates local weather and just generally looks cool... I also haven't had a watch since the 1990s.
Choice and the ability to customise things are part of the many joys of Android, you set it up your way and use it your way.
The replies are right in. As for the launcher I have people coming to me all the time cause their phone is slow and lagging and whenbi unlock screen they have dozens of shortcuts all over the screen. Of course its gonna be slow when it need to reload a the launcher and all those Widgets. I swear some look so much like an icrap with all the shorcuts when I see it I have to double check. Lmao
As for the battery icon, you have to edit the coding for the file to add the extra 150 images that make up the % battery and charging icons and the bigger the file......
Now the clock well to be honest I remove the clock from the top bar any chance I get as I see it as pointless. We have Widgets for that.
As for sense it has its pluses like everything is prebuilt in. Social networking (not sure as I don't use FB at all) built into contacts and all the other handy apps that it comes with. I mostly run a senseless Tom my self but that is only due to it be long a resource hog. But the contacts and dialer work so well together that I have not found a better dialer/contact combo. The sense 3 lockscreen is just too good. I have widget locker but prefer the sense lock screen
Some very good replies, and here is my take, i've been modding my phone(s) now for a few years now (Since the Windows Mobile 5 Genre) and I would say function is not the only thing i look for. I want "coolness", "graphics"... I love the way the flip happens when you unlock a Sense ROM ..I strive to make it smoother !
Having said that I do resort to simplicity at times however, and you can too. have a look at Cyanogenmod and get Launcher Pro.. Ain't nothing simpler than that with the most "Function".
The ROM above will satisfy anyone who loves Function over Heavyness and also it has the option of showing percentage battery amongst plethora of other customizations neatly laid out in the settings menu.
But sometimes that just isn't enough for me..I want a ROM with More......Sense framework is probably the best Integration of everything I've ever seen. Yes its huge ! But then...this phone ain't that weak either...It is a beast
That is why you have an "option" my friend...an option to choose non-sense ROM or a Sense ROM. You could go for a Sense ROM (if you like all the integration of sense) and get yourself a different launcher from the market if you choose..customize it with the battery percentage mod.... yourself... The Dev's like to leave the option customize some aspects of their ROM's to the users... mostly because its personal preference.
The Sense Rom cooks, mostly, give u the most basic thing... A highly optimized ROM with a stock-like UI. You can choose to customize it the way you like ! After all thats what XDA is all about ..do it youself modding..
Hi all,
Your responses are appreciated and it's nice to have a polite conversation about this!
You're right breathlesstao, what the hell's a hardcore user. I just meant anyone who'd flash a ROM, root their phone, perhaps mod some element themself.
So I guess many of you - suprisingly for me - are happy to swipe between screens to get to their apps or widgets. You like what less clutter for doing this. Can see your point of view! I don't experience any lag though, zelendel, for packing my homescreens.
I suppose it was assumed that if you're more knowledgeable you'd be aware of apps and widgets with more options and functionality than the Sense launcher and its own widgets, and choose to use the former instead.
To be clear, I do like using other HTC features such as their contacts and dialler. It's just the homescreen layout I'm ranting about.
In particular for me, a good GUI, as well as looking pleasant, is as simple and quick to to use as possible. So when, for example, I'm going for a lunchbreak at work it's satisfying to be able to put my music or podcast-player on in a second without having to hunt it down.
i keep meaning to try a non sense rom but i like virtuous unity 2.39 sense 3.0 rom so much i´m loathe to part with it.
i know it only takes twenty minutes to go back to it but i just find it does everything in such a pleasant manner.. its smooth fast responsive and most of all it looks the buisness. plus as others have said you dont have to use all that sense stuff if you dont want to.
for music i do tend to use the stock player but i have been playing with other ones of late same with video but things like the clock and weather widgets for me are much more polished on the sense versions than anything comparible available from the market. plus i´ve not had any problem running low on ram or anything, the dhd is more than capable of handling sense 3.0 and whatever else one cares to throw at it without any hiccups

killersloth, thanks for the heads up - it looks very useful.
ponk2k, you know I also use VU (2.39) but with Launcher Pro - have uninstalled the Sense widgets that aren't connected to anything else. You probably think what's the point! To answer my own question, I wanted a custom ROM for things like battery life optimisation, and the VU team's branding has seemed more user-friendly to me than the non-Sense ROMs. Though maybe I'll try one soon. While I've got you though, can I ask if you have a problem with the brightness dimmng slowly on command in most scenarios with that ROM version? More info in my question here:

Just a fair warning man. No rom will be 100% bug free. That is what the stock roms are for. The roms here are for learning and trying new things. So there will always be bugs that need to be fixed. Plus some things that one person may see something a a bug while another sees it as a feature.

Hello everyone, I am currently running Sense 3.5 Energy and have been trying to find a good sense Rom the suits me. I just cannot seem to get one that doesn't have noticeable glitches.
With the Energy Sense 3.5 Rom I am having some trouble with a couple of things showing up.
*For example, when I try and select a "scene", "skin", "wallpaper", "Lock screen style" via the Personalize section, they are all just grey tabs and show no preview.
I find this Sense Rom to be the best one on my phone.
The other Sense Rom's do the same exact thing.
My other question is for the ICS Rom's. I love the overall feel of them and they are excellent but I am also having some noticeable issues.
*One issue I would like to address is when I turn the screen off from the on state, it will transition off, flicker on then off. It's basically a hit an miss, sometimes does it and sometimes doesn't, mostly it does. Same thing on ICS as to the Scene, skins, wallpapers, lock screen previews.
I have looked in many thread comments and haven't seen anyone really comment on any of these things, unless I am overlooking them. So here I am!
Appreciate all the help I can get, 2nd post! W00T!
Thanks, -Nic

The gray tab / hidden preview is a known issue with newer Sense ROMs. What to do is whenever you are in Personalize - Skins it whatever, hit the menu button and use Grid view.
The ICS screen-on thing, it happens sometimes. Not sure why, but it does. Plagues me on GB too. Annoying, yes, but I tap my power button 3 times fast to make sure it doesn't happen. Try using SetCPU or an alternative and raising barely the minimum value /screen off value.

For the ICS, I personally wouldn't recommend using setcpu, because it'll compete with the tiamat havs kernel and can cause issues. You can try downloading rom toolbox from the market [free] and use it to change the governor.
Most stable sense roms, in my opinion, are mikg or classic.

Both of those roms have very active themers who have done incredible jobs making them non stock. See wired theme for mikg or evolvedclassic and supreme cream for classic. Just sayin....
Hey everyone, I just had a question, with most Jellybean 4.2 roms I've tried multi-touch has been kind of non-responsive with gaming. I've tried multiple games (Dead Space, Sandbox, Pinball, various SNES Emulators) where whenever I would put more than on finger on it and remove it, both touch points would still act as if I had my fingers on it. It seems as if it doesn't register the two touches as seperate. For example, I was playing Chrono Trigger using an emulator (Snes9ex+ and Snesoid) and in order to run you have to hold down a button and navigate with the directional pad. Whenever I would do this and remove my fingers the chracter would keep moving.
This only seems to happen on 4.2 roms (Evervolv, Mazwoz, Xenon) with any kernel (I used stock, mazwoz, and blackdome). However, Jellybean 4.1 roms seem to work just fine for the most part (Solar Flare, Dirty Unicorn/Diablo) where multi-touch was just fine no issues. There is an app to check multi-touch on the market and when I used that it registered up to 5 points for 4.2 roms and anything else such as pinch-to-zoom in the browser was alright, just seemed to be gaming.
So I was wondering, is this due to the roms or the kernels? Also, is this merely just a downside with porting 4.2 roms to the EVO or just something that hasn't been reported yet?

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate all the work you developers have done.

Well this is a question that is probably asked about twice a week, but the reason for the lag is JB is not and i stress,is not made for the EVO,just not enough memory, also ICS,so you are lucky enough to get good devs that know what their doing with touch response tweaks and such, with ICS,unfortuneately we havent had such luck with JB yet, there are a few tweaks that might help with your lag since you are a gammer.... 4cyl Turbo engine v0.2.2 w/ 150 shot NOS / RTMixManager™2

Thanks a lot for this, honestly I didn't account it to lag, I just thought it was a bug since everything else was so smooth. Also sorry if this is a common question, I searched around but didn't find anything, thanks a lot for answering though!
