Hi all
Please help ansswering any or all of the following:
1- can you tether with verizon without rooting the phone, just by somehow
creating new access point?
2- do you need to root in order to tether?
3- Will verizon find out you are tethering without the tethering plan and charge you for it?
i will bank everything that it is blocked !
We don't know yet how they will handle it because Verizon has never had a Nexus device. Sprint and AT&T block it, T-Mobile does not. On carriers where it is blocked, it has always been rather easily circumvented.

This is what people are doing to get unlimited.

I had unlimited on my one line but added the gf so i can get the nexus. Not sure how long this will last.

I believe you either need root, or one of the various apps like PDANet that might or might not work without root.
As far as being caught... easiest thing to do is not be stupid. If you've averaged 4GB/Month and then suddenly spike to 20 they'll probably suspect something. I tether with my rooted Incredible often enough, but I don't download torrents or anything... mainly MUDs or simply the want of a larger/more powerful means of web browsing.

Does yours not work? I was under the impression that we did get a free trial. I'm able to use mine and even though I have the unlimited data plan I'm not paying anything extra for the mobile hotspot.
i didnt hear any mention of a free trial for the inc2..
saw the trial avail for the tbolt from wirefly though (but that wasnt enough for me to support those scam artists...)
I haven't tried and well I haven't heard anything

is that even applicable these days, since Verizon and AT&T just started to crack down on unauthorized tethering (via apps similar to PDANET).
this is the original thread for the 3G Mobil Hotspot hack on the Incredible, for those interested: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=752687
I just did the 3g hotspot hack and I am using that connection to type this post. My Dinc was rooted and I had wireless tether, and this seems to work just as well (so far any way)!
sure enough. tried it myself and it works flawlessly. heres to hoping this hacks sticks around for awhile.
but now im wondering...does this hack work for all android devices on vzw with 2.2?
can anyone post the mobile hotspot .apk? kinda deleted it from /system/app/
Seems to be mixed reviews that some can and some cannot. So what's the deal?
no....the end
Mine will let me but my web browser takes me to a page asking me to sign up for the Tethering service at $14.95/month.
Suppose the answer to the question is technically *yes*
I paid the upgrade for tethering, though I think it is a bit of bait and switch (their literature certainly wasn't clear, and my plan allowed it on my Vibrant with no complaint). But it is too important a function for me not to have. If I were a new customer, I would opt for it as well (unless some other carrier didn't charge extra). Frankly, I don't see why they can't just charge by the gigabyte (why should they care if you are streaming videos to your cell phone or to your PC?), but it seems this is the current convention.

If the carriers can charge you for something they will. It's as if 1GB on PC > 1GB on Phone. I assume that once we get root on these phones we'll be able to tether for free the same way I was able to on my Vibrant.

That should be the case. It's hard to go from 2 years (roughly of course) of using all sorts of awesome roms on the HD2 to this locked up guy. Here's to the future though, cheers.
Yes, I can.
I can. No app needed. Built right in the stock rom
I see another difference from previous tethering on the Vibrant: from the T-Mobile support page:
"When your phone is serving as a Wi-Fi hotspot for otherdevices, you cannot access the Internet on the phone itself."
It seems that it isn't completely true: I can listen to Internet radio, use Firefox, at least some of the time. The Android Market seems to fail consistently, however (just hangs "loading...").
Does anyone understand why this change has been made, or what is it's purpose?
i still don't quite can figure out why some people are able to teather as is without root
yet, some other are unable to teather
it's something in the phone plan that you guys have?, or simply the SIM card? or maybe it's on the account side in Tmobile?
I put the new SIM in my nexus and tethered fine when I couldn't from this phone.

Just tried to tether again this morning, it didn't work. It asks me to now add the plan.... Tethering was working.

I suppose that in order to ask us to sign onto tethering, the data must be going through the phone already, so they must have some filter in place that detects that fact and blocks further data, pending your decision.
Theres definitely something with the sim card. Used the sim from my mt4g and tethering would start and the automatically turn off a few seconds later. Activated the new sim and now it stays on but directs me to the site to purchse the service. Bummer.
We need to root this thing quickly.
Wonder if that's one of the reasons why tmo wants us to use the sim included.

Holy crap. I pay less than that for unlimited data. That's more than half of what a full data plan costs on T-Mobile. I take it not may people buy it. I'm guessing some of the custom ROMs will port over native tethering from the international SGS2. I wonder if T-Mobile flags tethering for people not on a legit tethering plan?
I tried to tether my Touchpad but got the T-Mobile page saying to add tethering. Gotta wait for root to get free tethering and utilize those fast data speeds!
i was doing some reserach on this and figured out how t-mobile does it. if you noticed when you turn on tethering a popup generates and after you enable it the 4g disappears for a bit, apparently in the software the phone disconnect your current apn, epc.tmobile.com and changes to another apn built into the phone software which checks for the 14.99 feature so yea sucks hopefully once root is established we can get around this. if you want to test this turn on wifi tether and then go to your apn and try to select the epc.tmobile apn bubble it will go on and then disconnect immediately
Has anyone tried any other APN's?

Here in the USA, T-Mobile charges $9.95/m for tethering. I chatted with T-Mobile asking them how come I cannot tether (brought to their promo page) and I was told that T-Mobile will be enforcing the T&Cs regarding tethering... that is, it's not allowed unless you pay for it.
I told them that my Vibrant and G2x tethered just fine to what he responded that this will change in the near future. He said that with the introduction of the SGS2 they will start to clamp down on tethering without a tethering plan.
Mind you, this is one T-Mo CSR and I don't know if it will really be policy. However, it's pretty clear that this is the case at least for the SGS2.
I have a rooted GN (Sprint) and have the wifi hotspot app from google. Works perfect but for ****s and giggles I just tried to enable the built in Hotspot on my phone...and it worked?? I called sprint and they said I did not have the add on and it should not be working. My question is when I unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone, did I unblock the hotspot and allow it to be used with no penalty from Sprint?
If someone would get back to me I would appreciate it greatly and pass out some thanks.
I don't see how the built in tethering could be blocked by you having it on your plan or not. The most I could see happening would be redirecting web requests to a page asking you to add it, or you getting a phone call from Sprint after using it. Your phone doesn't know what your plan is, so why would it not allow you to turn on the built in tethering feature?
well on my E4GT SII, When I tried to use my hotspot it would just not allow me to connect anything to it. With this one on the GNex, it allows me to connect my devices to it and use data, but without redirection or anything else. So paranoia is setting in and I dont want to see rediculous charges, but since I never received any warning so I guess they cannot charge me for anything.
Thanks for the info.

Envy you!!!
Lucky you. Since your rooted I guess it ignores your limitations on your plans. How bout you test something else that your not allowed to use due to plan limitations if there are any others.
If so.... I hate you!!! I wanna bypass the limitations!!!!! DX
BUT NICE!!!
P.S. I JUST TRIED ACTIVATING MY HOTSPOT ON MY VERIZON GALAXY NEXUS AND IT WORKED!!!! And it is not on the the plan. Also depending on ur Rom, some roms bypass the restrictions, allowing you free access to this wonderful and magical feature!!! Use freely with no worries but overages, but you got sprint, so ur worry free!!!
So to conclude. Use it and don't tell your carrier with out fear of being billed.

Really?!?!?!
Did they tell you that??? Cuz I know ur not getting billed unless u said ur doing or asking to check if you are using it.
On my Carrier they never told me once I was using it or billed me. And I've been using an app that just breaks the restrictions as long as it's open. So Verizon should see me using it unauthorize.
I know they can tell you. But the real question is, will you get billed if you never mention you are using???
Cuz I've done my research on this a few months back and they never bill you unless u ask em about and actually dig in and see that specific thing.
Just curious if people think we can tether freely out of the box on the 5X. I'm on Verizon, grandfathered Unlimited Data and I know on the Moto X Pure 2015 you could just pop your sim card in and tether without editing anything in the build.prop or whatever file it was.
I know there is no Verizon software baked in to the rom obviously, but I've heard default android can include a subscription check or something similar in the tethering for this sort of thing.
I believe tethering restrictions are based on the carrier back-end and not the phone. On T-Mobile USA, I was able to tether with my N6 without any problems.
Verizon actively restricts tethering on their branded devices by locking the bootloader. As the nexus is not branded by or sold by verizon, you should be able to tether without issue.

Just got my 5x today and unfortunately no, tethering does not work (on Verizon - I also have the grandfathered unlimited plan). I'm still looking into a work around (you can use FoxFi, which doesn't require rooting), but I'd rather have it through the ROM. I am considering rooting. However, I'm not sure if we know the long-term consequences of the setting off the QFuse.
Anyone know of a way to tether (without rooting - until we know more about QFuse)?
I am able to set up wifi hotspots from mine on AT&T without issue. I don't have a device handy to test out USB tethering but I don't know why that would be any different.

Did you actually try using FoxFi? Mine does not work. (I also have Verizon on the grandfathered unlimited plan.) I get an "android.permission.CONNECTIVITY_INTERNAL error".
I don't have my 5x yet to test on my own, but I did come across this and hopefully it works.

I just need my A to C cable to arrive to check it out! Thanks, I've been looking for this. My cable arrives tomorrow.
I am still on Verizon's grandfather unlimited data plan and I work remotely from home so, I need my hotspot. Is it easy or even necessary to root this device to enable the hotspot capability as I have it on my old rooted Samsung S5? (Yes, I am still holding to it only because of this convenience but, my phone is unbearable slow now after all of these "app updates").
Not necessary as I understand. Settings, Mobile hot spot and tethering

No it's not easy to root. If you do it, you will only get 80% battery charge. Verizon's will be unlocked or you can flash unlocked software to Verizon which would make it the same as buying Samsung unlocked. I can't say on tether hack but I feel like I've seen something on it somewhere, asked somewhere else. Maybe try Reddit's Verizon page or Reddits Verizon Unlimited page as well if it's not here.
