[q] please help! Hotspot question - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have a rooted GN (Sprint) and have the wifi hotspot app from google. Works perfect but for ****s and giggles I just tried to enable the built in Hotspot on my phone...and it worked?? I called sprint and they said I did not have the add on and it should not be working. My question is when I unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone, did I unblock the hotspot and allow it to be used with no penalty from Sprint?
If someone would get back to me I would appreciate it greatly and pass out some thanks.

I don't see how the built in tethering could be blocked by you having it on your plan or not. The most I could see happening would be redirecting web requests to a page asking you to add it, or you getting a phone call from Sprint after using it. Your phone doesn't know what your plan is, so why would it not allow you to turn on the built in tethering feature?

well on my E4GT SII, When I tried to use my hotspot it would just not allow me to connect anything to it. With this one on the GNex, it allows me to connect my devices to it and use data, but without redirection or anything else. So paranoia is setting in and I dont want to see rediculous charges, but since I never received any warning so I guess they cannot charge me for anything.
Thanks for the info.

Envy you!!!
Lucky you. Since your rooted I guess it ignores your limitations on your plans. How bout you test something else that your not allowed to use due to plan limitations if there are any others.
If so.... I hate you!!! I wanna bypass the limitations!!!!! DX
BUT NICE!!!
P.S. I JUST TRIED ACTIVATING MY HOTSPOT ON MY VERIZON GALAXY NEXUS AND IT WORKED!!!! And it is not on the the plan. Also depending on ur Rom, some roms bypass the restrictions, allowing you free access to this wonderful and magical feature!!! Use freely with no worries but overages, but you got sprint, so ur worry free!!!
So to conclude. Use it and don't tell your carrier with out fear of being billed.

Really?!?!?!
Did they tell you that??? Cuz I know ur not getting billed unless u said ur doing or asking to check if you are using it.
On my Carrier they never told me once I was using it or billed me. And I've been using an app that just breaks the restrictions as long as it's open. So Verizon should see me using it unauthorize.
I know they can tell you. But the real question is, will you get billed if you never mention you are using???
Cuz I've done my research on this a few months back and they never bill you unless u ask em about and actually dig in and see that specific thing.

Did you change your settings and remove ".dun" from the sign in info? Because that's what I did to make it work
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA App
Technically, yes, it is free. However, it is a pay service and getting caught bypassing their tools is a risk. Also, the risk of getting caught is greater using the Verizon app with the hack.
More than likely they're not going to care if you don't abuse it.
I never had to pay to use mine either. I think ive come across one site that doesn't work and i get redirected but thats it. I dtill did the .dun mod though, cuz I had to use ththat site for school.

Wifi hot spot? VZW...

Hey can someone confirm whether the stock wifi hotspot feature works on the Verizon galaxy nexus without having to add a tethering plan?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
When I select to turn it on, it runs through a "checking for subscription" then pops up an Error window that I'm not authorized to run it and have to call Customer Service. It was the first thing I tried as soon as I walked out of the VZW store this morning.

I'd like to know this as well. Chances are though, you have to be rooted and the hotspot app will have to be hacked for it to be used without detection check by VZW. I am with Sprint OG Samsung Epic, and these were the necessary steps to get Sprint hotspot to work without having a plan. I am sure a dev will be able to get it done in time. In the meantime, suggest rooting and using either Barnacle tether or Wifi Tether, or if you want to stay stock: PDANet.
After root - wired tether will work.
After root - WiFi tether will NOT work. It has the 'blocktether' thing on there.

Ouch. Any available apps/workarounds to enable wireless tether? This is a make-or-break issue for me right now in terms of getting the phone.
Framework patch. Give it a week. Or just pay for it.

At this moment, you'll need an LTE rom or patch that disables the 'blocktether' methinks. I am running stock for the rest of the week, so I cannot test - apologies.

Just root your phone. There is no downside to that.

That's not the problem. Not being able to tether could potentially be a dealbreaker for some people (myself included).
Its blocked. You've got to root and remove the software they have for tracking tethering. Or wait for a CDMA custom ROM to come out that has unblocked tethering.

Anyone tried this app ht tp://goo.gl/LZCZO or the paid version ? Can't believe VZW sucks so bad, makes sense now why the phone was delayed so long... Google arguing against VZW breaking and crippling their beautiful OS. But I just bought one this morning and being delivered tomorrow.

Using a 3rd party app doesn't remove Verizon's tracking software. They'll still see you're doing it based on my experiences w/ VZW phones...
I'm assuming you guys have tried Google's Wireless Tether app. No dice?

Not letting people steal bandwidth is not crippling the OS. Don't get me wrong I think paying for tethering is beyond retarded but it is a paid service that they offer there is no reason for them to give it away for free.

People aren't "stealing" bandwidth. They're paying for it and using it. This isn't even an argument in a world of capped data plans. If you pay for 2GB or 4GB or 10GB+, you're buying that bandwidth from VZW. Its yours to use. And carriers are being beyond ridiculous, forcing consumers to pay for data twice.
And it is crippling (albeit thats a bit dramatic) the OS. ICS (and 2.2, 2.3) has wired/wireless tethering enabled. Removing that, is removing a feature that used to make the OS whole.
Just to clear the air -
Currently - no matter what App you use, you cannot WiFi tether.
Verizon is blocking ALL WiFi tether - you will need to remove the check.
Thanks for the update. What are the chances that this check can be removed? I know people with the Bionic were having problems tethering (still not sure if they can).
This is a deal breaker for me, so I'm hoping it isn't something too complicated for the devs to remove.
P.S. Let's not turn this into a morality thread. This is a place to discuss whether or not you can get WiFi tethering working without paying extra for it.
This is a huge problem, I need to tether by next Thursday.

Fool proof tether? I got a msg from Tmobile

Is there any fool proof method that works for not being detected for tethering?
Just received a push message from Tmobile

The system they use to detect tethering might not be perfected, I got one of those messages while using the browser on my phone.
Interesting, I'm just not trying to take a a chance of being kicked out my contract and I be damned if I'm paying for it... Refuse to go back to sprint
Sent from my T-mobile Galaxy Note II
Basically since they came out with the unlimited 4g plan they have started monitoring it closely. There is one way around it that works for a while and if you dont use alot of data they wont detect it. But if you stream alot of netflix and stuf they will figure it out. You have to usd chrome on your computer and then get an app from the chrome store called user agent spoofer it tbink I5 is called. Then you set your user agent to firefox 3 or 4 and you shkuld be good. Actually the best way to do it is to use the android user agent because then it cant tell that you are not using your phone. The problem roblem with 5hat is you lose flash and some other stuff
What does the message say so far this month I have used 6.6 gb and still have about 10 days left on my cycle and last month I used about 4.5 gb. Haven't got a message from them yet
Probably a better way to ensure they can't track you is to set up a VPN on your laptop or tablet, like using your work or school.
Route all traffic through there and T-Mobile should have no way to tell what you're doing. Assuming encryption.

People like you are the reason Unlimited data doesn't exist on most carriers any more, and the reason T-Mobile will probably yank ours before long. That's solid work, way to ruin it for everyone.

[Q] Removing Note II from Sprint

Hey guys I have a quick question,
I have a Sprint Note II that I want to activate on my line but I'm having a little issue. Back story: I acquired it because my sister failed to pay Sprint so they canceled her plan and she needed cash so she gave me her Note II in exchange for the money she needed since she no longer has Sprint. So the phone works fine, but they won't remove it from her account because she owes a balance of over $500. She's called in and even though the phone isn't financed through Sprint they won't release the SN/MEID from her account so needless to say, it cannot be added to my line. I'm wondering if there's a manner to get it off her account or change out the SN/MEID to make it usable? I've been running an HTC Evo Design for the last 2 years and really need to upgrade my phone but again, I gave my sister money so I no longer have the cash. I cannot for obvious reasons of her being my sister and requiring money tell her to give me back my money.
I originally thought they wouldn't remove it because when I called it wasn't her on the line. Even after being able to fully verify her account. I was speaking to the rep and he said that there is a manner but obviously couldn't tell me what it was so I'm turning to the trusty XDA forums.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
(even if it's not a program or something, a manner of speaking with them or getting them to take it off her account without having to pay the balance)
Thank you,
Tag
The only way it "could" have been done is if you were able to reactivate the account for a short duration then call in and Swap the phone out with an older device. It would free up the phone and you could let the acct go out again.

Are you on Sprint too?
Odds are you're hosed if so. They always permanently brick the MEID of devices on accounts that are cancelled due to lack of payment. You can flash the device to another carrier and use it however.

Yeah pretty much. Or you can do the gsm mod and use it anywhere but the US.
Hmmm, I might flash it and put it on TMobile then..... Wonder who'd accept it...
I have my bad esn flashed to cricket no problems. Anywhere you flash it you will lose 4g, but mine works flawlessly with cricket. I have far greater reception abd 3g speeds from my previous carrier, boost mobile (which is sprint).

You can't flash it to T-Mobile, they're GSM. You can only flash it to another compatible CDMA carrier. Ofcourse there are other, shall we say clandestine ways to get it on Sprint, but obviously taboo to discuss on here.

Help get tethering hotspot to work on Pixel XL

I bought it from the google store and i am now using it for my work. I took the sim card out of my iPhone 7 and put it in my Pixel XL and the tethering is not working. I called my IT dept and they said they only support apple and samsung devices. The service is through AT&T btw.

Thanks for the reply. I work for a company who only supports samsung and apple devices. if i give them my imei number it wont come up on their supported devices list and they wont be able to make the change.
I wonder if i use one of my friends IMEI number who has a Galaxy S7, just so they can approve the device and then put the order in to change plans.
It is not a company issue unless the company is paying for your service and then it is still an att issue as the setting are on thier end not your company as it is not a plan change only a reset to defaults for the curent plan if your curent iphone had tether then your new one will as well unless you are talking about a vpn and then that is a different story .

Yes my company is paying for my service. I called the people who are in charge of the cell phone department and they had told me that they had switched me to the unlimited plan and with the unlimited plan the tethering isn't supposed to work, but it was working on my iPhone. So I had them switch me back to the 5 gigabyte plan with tethering and hopefully that will solve my issue within a couple of days as long as it gets approved but my manager. Thank you for your reply

No worries. I don't understand why Google shipped the device with provisioning on by default given that it isn't a carrier branded device.
I have an idea that might work. I'm waiting on a reply to a message I posted elsewhere to see if that technique will work or not though.

might be a dumb question but under settings--developer options, there is a option, OEM unlock.. Do you have to enable that in order to unlock the bootloader? Thanks again

Google follows the carriers. If carries dont want tether for free... Then google codes a check into the framework. I its fairly simple to bypass that check and there are a few posts on how to do it...
Good luck to you!
