First of all, I know I am an idiot - so let's get that out of the way right now!
So, I have been using Mik 2.6 for several months now and loved it. But my phone ear speaker shorted out or something, and all calls sound very tinny and "crunchy". Also, every so often when I take photos the lower half of the image gets funky (like over exposure from a real camera). So, I decided to just try and restore to factory and take it to Sprint tomorrow.
Using the RUU gave me a problem. I would get so far then it would tell me (when looking for bootloader) that the usb wasnt connected to the phone or the computer. When I got that error on the computer, the phone screen was just a black screen with larger HTC logo on it. Couldnt go anywhere from there. Unplugging the device gave me the recovery screen with RUU option selected. I had to take out the battery to reboot from there. I tried to reboot the phone in recovery mode and maybe try to get to bootloader menu THEN run RUU. When I did that, I would get the same error. But when I restarted the phone, it would not boot all the way, but get stuck with the wallpaper showing, the power guage, and the 3g bars. It would never go all the way to the time/unlock screen.
So, I tried to reboot into recovery again from there... the phone vibrated three times and shut down. Now, it is completely bricked. It will not turn on normally, or in any recovery mode. In fact, when I plug it in to recharge - the light doesn't even come on.
SO - am I completely screwed? Is there ANYTHING I can do? Any advice, anecodotes, well wishes... anything would be appreciated! Thanks!
Have you tried taking the battery out for 5 minutes, placing it back in, then back on the charger? That'll let the capacitors dissipate, and make sure the battery isn't super drained.
I did, and it worked - to the point where it will start up and get right to the point of giving me the lock screen - but not quite. I can see the wallpaper. I can see the 3G up and down, and the signal bars... and the time. In fact, I even used my wifes phone to call mine, and it rang. But it didnt give me a way to answer the call. So now I can see all of the above, and a missed call icon!
So, I can also restart in Bootloader mode. Should I plug into my computer and restart in Bootloader mode and start the RUU?
Try restoring to factory by flashing the PC36IMG way. It eliminates the USB causing issues

Take the sd card out of the phone, mount to a pc via adapter, toss on the s-on zip, flash in recovery, or do the revolutionary method, depending on how you rooted, then do an RUU in PC36IMG form.
I would love to, but I cannot access the SD card right now. Trying to.

How do you not have access to it? Pop off the battery and remove it from the slot with the little tab. or you mean you haven't gotten it out yet?

Also, no - I have not gotten the sd card out of the phone. Ever. Wouldn't even know how to do so. Again, read the first line of my original post!

Well you'll need a micro usb adapter to place it in computer, and still can't be read?
- take off the back cover
- remove battery
- there will be a lil 'lip' tab on the right side where the sd card car, pull up on it, then pull out the sd card
Yeah, I got the card out. Will have to go out tomorrow and get the adapter.
I just wonder why my phone will not restart all the way. It is so close. I even see notifications! My wife just sent me a text message. Well, I will get back to this tomorrow. Thanks!

Did you try ruu
Sent from my SPH-P100 using XDA App
How would I do that?
Looks like you flashed the RUU, probably a PB31IMG.zip, but for the AMOLED mode. And I'll bet you have an SLCD device. You will need to run the RUU blind I believe.
First go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786436
Put the part 2 PB31IMG.zip on your SD card. Put it in the phone. Boot holding Power + VOL Down. Wait a few minutes for hboot to verify and recognize the image. Then press Vol + up. And wait... Probably 10 minutes or so, it should eventually flash the RUU for 2.2 that comes with the SLCD model.
Here is the newest one that I know of:
http://dougpiston.com/files/RUU/bui...and-2.15.00.07.28-hboot-0.92.0000_PB31IMG.zip
It has hboot .92, the 7.28 radio, and its the 3.26.605.1 release. Put it on your SD card, and rename it "EXACTLY PB31IMG.zip".
Also make sure your SD card is FAT32 or it will not work. Hopefully you have a micro SD card reader. Comes in handy.

Just refreshed the tread. You'll probably have to go get a micro SD card reader.
I found an adapter laying around, so I'll try and hope for the best, thanks for your help
How do you reformat the sd card to fat32? I think that may be why it's not working for me
Nevermind, idiot moment
Still just a black screen, any suggestions?
Is it possible that my battery completely drained somehow and that's why it isn't working? If so, being that I have nothing, if I plug it in to charge, will it still charge the battery?

What process did you use to unroot?

Yeah, I did exactly what he said. I think what happened is the unroot zip I initially downloaded was for the AMOLED screen and I have a SLCD. It was not clearly marked one way or the other, so I'm pretty sure that's what I did. I'm just trying to get it fixed now.

Tried Formating using power+camera+volume done.
Any suggestion?
Try taking out the battery. Popping it back in, and try Volume Up, Power, Camera... Mine got stuck once, then I put it into Download mode... once it started, I took the battery out again... then put it back, and it booted up normally.
Outside of that, no clue.

Here is what I did... again, I make no assurances for your device...
I put it into download mode, waited a minute or 2... popped the battery out, popped it back in about 5 seconds later, did the re-format trick (vol down, power, cam) and that seemed to do the trick. Try that again. I'll be standing by.
I thought there was a restore mode in zune? Like you put it into download mode then hook it up to zune and it offers a restore option.
oh well didn't seem to work. Zune does have that but it gave an error when trying to restore it. thx all.
hold power, volumedown, and camera, to format. it may take you back to download mode. format again til it goes to the connect to pc icon like during the update- go to zune and go to update then restore

I also have a bricked Focus which gets stuck on the boot screen. But it had nothing to do with the update process. It just bricked itself during normal use (without even using a MicroSD card).
I wonder if that fix would solve problems for these devices as well (which have a corrupt ROM).
I don't have the phone on me right now so can't test it, but I'm calling the retailer I got it from to send back my bricked unit since they weren't able to fix it. If this works, it would help a lot of people!
Ok my friend has a droid incredible and he may have screwed it up permanently. He rooted the phone then flashed cyanogen mod kernel and now the phone will not mount the sd card. Clockwork recovery won't even launch because it needs the sd card mounted. He can access hboot but I don't think it's functioning properly. The phone will not power on unless you remove the battery then plug it into the usb charger. I think that may be a symptom of the bad kernel. I have a samsung vibrant so its very simple to revert back to stock with odin if you semi-brick your phone. How would I revert back to stock on an htc droid incredible thats unable to mount the sd card? Is it even possible? Is there a simple solution or is game over for this phone?

Yes. I'm not 100% sure that it vibrates five times but it does vibrate when you try to turn it on with out the usb plugged in and then the light blinks green like you described. I don't have the phone in my possession but what you described is exactly what is happening when you turn it on without it being plugged in.
Yes 5x vibrate then the damn green light of death!!! HELP

I'd try using a card reader to put the RUU on the SD card, then boot into hboot to install it.

can't mount sd card at all... card works on the computer... only powers on after hitting the power button then when the HTC Incredible screen pops up you insert the power cable the it turns on... without doing that you get 5 vibrations followed by a flashing green light and nothing works.. when phone is on, the WIFI, bluetooth and the sd card doesn't work.. can't even take picture due to it saying insert sd card??? any suggestions?
forgot to mention that now the phones has strange white lines that flow threw the screen when using it... glitches
Lines across the screen on any device usually points to some sort of hardware failure (usually video); I think that's what the 5x vibrate means too, is some sort of hardware failure.
what about all the other stuff not working... can i bring phone back to verizon and get a new one??? what if they see superuser is that avoid on warrenty?
The 5X vibration thing screwed my phone up. I took it to Verizon, showed them it wouldn't boot, got a refurb, no questions asked. I had the unrevoked splash and everything.
Just take it to Verizon. I don't know of anyone that's fixed their phone after this started happening, sorry.
Thanks brotha I will deff run over there and see what's up will they still give me a new phone without paying. The $5 a month warrenty... ie there like a one yea manufactur warranty or something?

There should be a one year manufacturers warranty if you got the phone from Verizon.
Hi!
First of all i got AOKP + Franco kernel for 2w without any problem and I didn't change any option since last week.
This morning i rebooted it, it switched off and it didn't start again.
I cannot switch one my nexus again since then. I have always a black screen, also if I try to enter in download mode or in the recovery.
I tried to connect to my computer and smt times my laptop see a omap4400 (i'm not sure about the name) but after few second it disappears.
Tomorrow I'm going to the service center... But I have a big doubt:
What the hell happened this morning?
Thanks
Remove the battery for 5 minutes and try again.
If that doesn't work,
Follow this guide:
1. Download the zip file from http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f634...eeeee-1465412/, created by Legija
2. Extract zip to whatever location you're comfortable with (I used Android directory)
3. Open up Device Manager (Hold down Windows Key, press R, the type in devmgmt.msc and press OK)
4. Go to actions menu, select Add Legacy Hardware
5. Choose install manually, then have disk. Browse to where you extracted the zip, select the 'inf' file in usb_drv_windows
6. Choose OMAP, you'll get a popup if on Win 7, continue anyway (driver not signed)
7. Once completed with driver, pull battery out of phone, then plug it into USB
8. Double click omap4460_tuna_hs_pro.bat to start the process
9. Once completed, unplug from USB, put battery back in, and power-up!
10. Extra step - depending on what's been done, it may 'brick' again - suggest to do a restore or a wipe reinstall afterwards to be certain (mine bricked again next reboot)

I'm having the exact same problem. I saw my phone at maybe 10% battery in the AM, said screw it and let it die, woke up this morning and plugged the phone in and nothing. No LED light, black screen, completely unresponsive. I've tried every trick in the book, and the only one that seemed to work marginally even was using a different battery, which got my phone to boot to the encryption screen, but then shut off again. It did that twice, and now both batteries are useless.
I used Legija's program to try and bring some life back to my gnex, even though it's not the international version, just in hopes of getting some of my data back (I have already started the replacement process with Verizon since the phone was insured), but I got no luck there either.
It's extremely disappointing and annoying to me that this phone survived all sorts of ROM installations (I was also using AOKP on 4.1 if someone wants to start making connections), reformatting, tweaking, almost every setting on that phone was modified by me.
Not only that but almost any software or hardware problem I did run into I could solve in maybe an hour, but I let my charge run out and the phone just up and bricks itself? Now, that's just bull****... I would be very curious as to an explanation as to WHY on earth this would happen. Very confusing.
Not to hijack the thread, but my interest here is not restoring the phone to working condition but just seeing if I can pull my data off of it. I wouldn't even be posting here had I been able to have an SD card with my gnex, which I figured was unnecessary at the time I bought it since I knew the space on their was enough for me already, and the added branding of "Nexus" brand which had me under the impression it was maybe stable enough by itself. Not a mistake I'll make again..
Is it at all possible to get the data off of my phone at this point? At least partially? I believe encryption makes it impossible but I'm rather stubborn. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

So just to be clear... You've been able to get it to boot all the way up to the encryption screen, right? If so you should be able to get into fastboot (Holding down BOTH volume rockers and the power key.) From there you could relock/unlock the bootloader to do a full factory wipe which might solve your boot issue.
As far as the data loss from the wipe, you could then try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994705

I was able to get it to the encryption screen with my old battery that had a little bit of charge left in it twice, but it shut itself down on me both times. So now both batteries are useless.. I took it to the Verizon store hoping they would maybe try one of their batteries, but they just called customer service and told me they're just going to replace it at this point.
I have a feeling the charging mechanism is somehow damaged, because when I did get it to the encryption screen I had it plugged into a wall outlet and it wasn't charging at all. So, I can't turn the phone on whatsoever anymore.. if I could turn it on I could solve this problem... but it simply refuses to boot. The closest I came to interfacing with it was the OMAP Flash script, which did work, but didn't fix the problem.
So maybe if I could get the phone working enough to use ADB with it I could get my data back, but not even that seems possible..

If the phone isn't charging then there's something wrong with the USB port. One way to test that would be to use a battery charger. Also, try a different cable. I've had issues with a few different cables that for whatever reason started to not fit properly in the phone.
If you're USB port has gone bad then you'll need to either A) Always use an external battery charger. B) Get a replacement. C) Fix it yourself (Good guide here: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repairi...+LTE)+Micro+USB+Charge+Port+&+Main+Mic/9641/1 )
[My device is a Sprint Galaxy S III, unrooted on STOCK 4.1 (with multi-view)]
So the previous night I plugged my phone into the charger as normal and went to bed. Strangely, when I woke up, my phone was turned off. Curious, I went to turn it back on and waited for it to boot back up, only to have it freeze up in the middle of opening an app. I wasn't worried at this point, but after a battery reseating and restart, it happened again. This time, it froze up on the 'Galaxy S III' boot logo. I tried multiple times to restart, swapping batteries, waiting, and managed somehow to get it to recovery mode. There, I managed to wipe cache and attempt to restart the phone once more. Nothing--it was still frozen on the boot logo. After waiting a while, I tried to get it back into recovery mode, popping out the battery whenever it froze. To my horror, this time, pressing and holding the power button did not get a response from the device.
Mind you in my (roughly) year's worth of time with this phone, I had never dropped it or subjected it to any form of shock or damage. Seriously--the phone looks out-of-the-box-brand-new.
Now the device is bricked(?) I'm thinking it's some sort of hardware defect, but I'm confused because it happened out of nowhere--simply overnight. Nothing I do seems to elicit a response from it and I even tried swapping in a freshly charged battery.
I really don't care about most of the data on the internal storage (cloud sync ftw!) but there are a ton of photos inside that I would give anything to save. Is there any way I could save them? I'd appreciate any input!
TL;DR: Out of nowhere, my 1yr old GSIII suddenly started acting strange and after some troubleshooting bricked itself. Need photos on internal storage.
Can you get Into download mode? If so you can just Odin it back to stock, but it will wipe everything on internal storage.
BEFORE YOU DO THAT, I know @CNexus knows some commands in adb that can probably save your photos on the internal storage. Let me see if I can find them real quick or he might see this thread first..

The following commands will pull all the pictures from your internal storage (connect phone to computer and make sure you are in the same directory as the adb.exe folder)
Code:
adb pull /sdcard/DCIM camera <press Enter and then wait..>
adb pull /sdcard/Pictures pictures <press Enter and then wait...>
Also, was your phone rooted? Because if the above doesn't work, then we can still get your stuff for you if you can get into recovery
Note: The phone is only truly bricked if it shows "QHSUSB_DLOAD" when you connect it to the computer.

My phone actually won't even go into download mode. It stays off no matter what I press. Will the adb commands still work?
Additionally, my phone is not rooted.
EDIT: Actually, upon plugging my phone into my PC, it says exactly that. QQ
Well yes it is a general term, but people tend to use it loosely with meaning that the phone won't go into the OS for whatever reason. When you overwrite the bootloader, that's when you have a brick. Either that or the kernel is so messed up that it fries your EMMC. On these phones when the bootloader is overwritten it will show as QHSUSB_DLOAD when connected to a computer.
Can you try connecting it to your computer and seeing what pops up? If it shows up at all, it may still be possible to recover it.

Similar issues
I had a similar issue with my phone today. I'm mostly posting to show that this isn't an isolated incident, since I have insurance and can get my phone replaced, but any suggestions for fixing it would be very welcome.
My phone is a year old Sprint SGS3 running CM10.0 or so, stock battery with plenty of juice, haven't flashed anything or even booted into recovery in quite a while, no new apps for a week or so, no recent battery pulls, no usage out of the ordinary.
The phone died in my pocket, and upon trying to boot it would display the SAMSUNG screen for ~0.5 seconds, then display the "Samsung Galaxy S III" screen for ~0.2 seconds before dying. It did not bootloop, but remained off. Similar behavior was exhibited when trying to boot into recovery and download mode:
When booting into recovery, the SAMSUNG screen with the recovery overlay would display for ~0.5 seconds, then the "Samsung Galaxy S III" screen would come up for ~0.2 seconds before it died.
When booting into download mode, the SAMSUNG screen came up for ~0.5 seconds, then the warning about running custom ROMs came up. If I was quick, I could press volume up to start going into download mode, but it would still die almost immediately either way.
When plugged into a USB cable attached to a laptop or power, the battery icon would come up with the loading circle for ~0.5 s, then it would die. If plugged in with the battery removed, the right indicator light would come on and it would vibrate, but the screen would not turn on.
After booting over and over for some time, it will no longer respond in any fashion, except when plugged in with the battery removed as described directly above. I suspect the battery has died, and cannot be charged because the phone crashes before charging begins.
Any thoughts on how to fix it, or ways to revert back to stock when the phone won't stay on for more than 2 seconds?
That is The Sudden death Syndrome. Your power button has failed. It is messed up internally. This is a known issue with the S3. You can try blowing some air in the power button area and jiggling it around to get a temporarily working. But they do replace it for this condition.

That sounds very plausible. I noticed some irregularities with the power button as well, but didn't think they were worth mentioning. When you say "they", do you mean Samsung? Or someone else?

Do you know if they will replace the phone past the standard warranty? I'm out of warranty by only a few days. I figured I had a problem with my battery so I bought a new one to test before I found the power button to have failed. I'm going to be heading back over in a few minutes to return the battery kit, and hopefully they will replace my phone without making me go through insurance.

@cytark

I haven't ever replied to these threads but I need help so I hope im doing this right. I have a galaxy note 2 that did pretty much the same thing as the original thread poster. I can get to the recovery screen but I cannot connect to a computer. I really want my pictures and possibly to fix my phone. I appreciate any help you can provide. thanks
