I have a og evo I want to know why when I overclock to 1.2ghz it freezes my phone why does it do that ?

Each Evo is different. Some of them can't handle that high overclock, or can't be undervolted very low. Each one is different, each has its limits.
I don't understand the big deal with overclocking. It burns your battery faster. I personally underclock, with little to no lag and is good enough for my casual gaming needs
Mine doesn't like a clock much at all. I can get about 1.1 before it starts locking up but even then it hangs a lot. I honestly don't see a difference from 1.0 to 1.2. Get a decent rom, good kernel and try out the v6 script an I almost guarantee you will like that better.

Well for us to be able to help you, you would need to provide us with more details on how you are trying to accomplish this.
I use no frils cpu but have also tried setcpu and viperMOD I know that's the best way to overclock but is very confusing. Have any step by step instructions to of to 1.2 I know having higher voltages helps as well.

Overclocking is overrated. If you need to overclock for every day usage, then something is wrong - at least in my opinion. Resource intensive gaming is different, but you shouldn't need to overclock for browsing, texting, casual games, etc.
Try out the V6 Supercharger script. I'm not currently using it, but have in the past and it seemed to make my phone more snappy. A lot of people swear by it and it's a great script, definitely worth a shot. There are other things you can do to speed up your phone without overclocking. I'd try other options first since overclocking will chew through your battery. Increase the dalvik vm heap size, there are plenty of free apps on the market to help with this task. Uninstall apps you don't use, I'll bet that you never use some of the apps on your phone. Back them up with Titanium Backup and you can restore them if you ever need them again.
In case you didn't already know, the Evo can't overclock past 1.2, I'm not 100% sure why - it has something to do with the processor.

I never oc over 1075 and only when plugged in if i play a game I need to oc.for I just activate my charging profile and plug up and play 1.2 ghz is a good chance of doing serious.damage as these older scorpion processors get very very hot at that clock speed so they lock up to try and protect themselves from heat damage or they shut down the phone 1075 is as high as you should need to go for any games the evo can handle on the subpar gpu

I'm pretty sure viperMOD is more for undervolting than overclocking, which are not suppose to be combined together. I am running vipermod with max voltages - 50. Other nite was playing snes9x and was getting some lag with a game so I bumped max CPU up to 1.2. Phone went into a bootloop and had to superwipe and reflash everything. Don't know if its b/c vipermod + 1.2 CPU or just bumping up CPU. Didn't try it again.

You can overclock and undervolt together just fine. You just need to ensure that every frequency has a high enough voltage to run the processor at that step. My Evo is overclocked and undervolted just fine, although IIRC I can only push it up to 1.1 GHz . My tablet is 1ghz to 1.6ghz and is undervolted as well, though.
merge rls 2.0, iron monkey, Droid overclock because of the profiles options. I set up four profiles including one for temp. sometimes i'm underclocking and sometimes overclocking but only up to 1.19 to prevent freeze and boot loops. Only downside is right at open Droid overclock needs su permission but that is my choice since profile changes at open.
Very snappy afterwards.

When I had the 4G, I was never able to go above 1118, or somewhere around that. It would have freezing issues.
On my evo shift, I was able to do 1.7 gHz (compared to stock 800 mhz) ok. 1.6 pretty reliabily, and I could run 1.5 all day long. Some guys could do 1.9. It just depends on the phone.

Its give some good useful info about how to set up a good aosp rom. I'm underclocked, undervolted, and still getting 1400+ benchmarks. Check it out bro. You'll love the results.

What? Overclocking and undervolting are two completely different things, and they aren't mutually exclusive. Unless you can provide a good reason as to why it's counter productive to do both, I don't buy that at all. Just checked my phone, my overclock requires an extra 25 mV for all three steps I've overclocked. 25mV isnt much, and it certainly isn't going to kill my battery that much faster.
Besides, the only time the CPU is going to be entering these high power modes is when it needs to do work, and it's better to do work as fast as possible to go back to sleep. Would you rather wake up, do a mundane task for 5 minutes, then go back to sleep or wake up, do a task at 2x the speed while only consuming 30-50% more energy, then going back to sleep after only 2.5 minutes?

First let me say I don't use viper mod or any voltage controlling mod.
On sense 3.0 roms such as mikg I over clock to 1152 and set the minimum to 384 and its smooth as butter. No problem and battery lasts all day.
On aosp however such as decks (I'm on it now) I underclock to 499 and leave the min at 254. Smooth as always and battery lasts forever.
Anything past 1152 is going to cause problems (at least in my experience) also the rom/kernel can effect how much you can overclock.

Its counter productive because it is giving less to something that needs more. (Don't take this post as me trying to be a ****. Just voicing how someone explained it to me a while ago)
Think of this as cars.
Lets say you have a nice fancy v8 mustang. Stock, everything is well, balanced.
If you start adding parts and get it pushing out 1000 horsepower (overclock) your most likely gonna need more feul (voltage) or at least stock amount flowing into the engine just to keep it running.
Now lets say you got that same 1000 horsepower gas destroying mustang and you start to lower the amount of gas flowing into the engine (undervolt (done in vipermod)) cylinders (CPU) wont get enough gas, it wont work, and your stuck going no where.
So if that made sense (did to me) then you can see why they are counter productive. Unless your using vipermod to overvolt (which idk if you can since I don't use it) then you can disregard this whole post

Your car analogy is completely irrelevant. You can look up the exact voltages that the CPU runs on at every frequency, *even when overclocking*. Overclocking an Evo 1ghz to 1.2ghz takes maybe a 5% bump in voltage, and that 5% extra power is only going to be used *when the CPU is running at max speed* (which is only when there is a lot of work to do), and even then, it's *still better to let the CPU run at max speed with a tiny bit more power consumption than to cap the CPU at a slower speed and make it work for even longer*. Intel calls it HUGI, Hurry Up and Get Idle.
I know what I'm talking about, and I wish people would stop trying to argue with me based off of second hand speculation. I do this for a living, after all. There is absolutely nothing wrong with overclocking and undervolting, and it's the best way to get the most battery life *and* performance out of your phone, period.

Hmm, *interesting*. I believe the best answer to the OP was covered rather well earlier. It's all about your rom/kernel/hardware combination. With all the variables to consider as relevant, your best bet is to experiment and find what works for your device. Don't check set on boot untill you are confident the set-up is stable. Higher is not always better with overclocking. My device runs blazingly well underclocked @768max. Gets insanely great battery @499max. However my quadrants are better @ 1036 than at 1190.
Great thing about android is you can experiment and learn through trial and error.

A lot of people say AOSP ROMs are good on battery life cuz the sense is gone.
Try out Xplod RLS (one of my favs) test it out see how it goes for you. It's an AOSP btw.
For sense I recommend Tommytomatoes Classic v0.0.0.4 its awesome!
How long does your battery last? Are you running mobile data all day? GPS?
I can get around 20-24 hours put of my battery with real heavy usage. Around 2 days with normal use.
I keep my 3g and everything off until i need it.

I have always had the best success with AOSP and custom kernel.
Currently running ICSmod7 with latest tiamets. With 4g it drops fast but without I get through a full day no worries medium use. Text, fb, music during workout ect...

Getting good battery life with MikG 2.61.
mikg rom to me is best for battery life .and very stable rom and clean so try and let us know .im running miui and battery life is pretty good but not as good as my mikg rom

I've been experimenting with ROMs and kernels for the last 18 months, always looking for best battery life with regular to heavy use. A good custom kernel will sometimes give you an extra 10-15 %. Using setCPU or another app like systemtuner (my pref) to turn CPU down while screen off can also give you 5-10%. Far and away the best thing for my battery is to use an alternative launcher (ADW for me) and then use Titanium backup pro or systemtuner to freeze sense. you just find the two elements in the process list that start with "HTC sense" and freeze them. Night and day. FYI I run synergy and have always come back to Myn's ROMs cause they are good for battery from the start, but they also take well to pretty much any custom kernel, which isn't true for all ROMs. I like everything to work so I always ditch AOSP ROMs a few days after trying them.

As long as nothing is really hammering the CPU in the background (which is the problem, not the CPU speed!), then it's better to let the CPU enter higher power states in order to finish the work quicker and return to low power sleep state. Tommytomatoes The Classic is a solid sense rom with good battery life its fast as hell, has lots of mods and themes and is pretty sick I've been stuck on it for over a month now I've flashed other roms but always come back to the classic after a few hours

Underclocking is when you set the speed of the processor to a lower setting than the stock clocks where as undervolting is lowering the voltage needed to run it at a certain speed be it stock underclocked or overclocked. Simplest way I understand it.

Ya this is one of the main reasons behind bad batt.. Sprint and other carriers allow a company to monitor and chart everything we do and it mirrors off txts and data sent and is designed to pick up on.key words... Basically an Invasive tracking monitor. It's a huge in noticed drain... And its been shown to be removed from system/app in many custom roms. But it never does cause its so strattled throughout the OS.

I have been using evodeck v1.3 with the lee kernel and the rom just sips on my battery and gives me outstanding battery life with amazing speeds

Im stone stock right now. Do you see an actual improvement in apps that need the extra O/C HP? I have one game I bought that seems to be a little choppy at times, 9mm HD, and Im not sure if its the games coding, the fact that it maybe having a problem with ICS, or just not enough hardware HP to be fluid.
I OC'ed when I first got the phone but quickly dropped it back to 1200. This phone doesn't need overclocking and if you are noticing lag in games it is most likely due to poor coding by the dev for either ICS or dual core phones or both. If it is lagging on a 1.2 GHz dual core and it is our hardware think about people running it on the Inc 2 with a 1 GHz single core processor and basically last years tech. Our phones should be fine to run most if not all games for about a half year or maybe a year before OCing will really be needed.
Why don't you just do it and find out? It's really hard to tell because no kernel is a stock kernel with 1.35 GHz / 1.4 GHz.
All these kernels featuring OC have additional features which means that it could be the features/tweaks that are fixing it rather than the OC itself.

Well,...Im just pretty content with how it performs in every other aspect, except for this one game bugs me a little. Ive been ROMed and O/Ced on this not too long ago, and TBH, theres always some sort of little thig that turns me off about it. A spontaneous reboot here, a F/C there, and I find myself going stock again. I would do it in a heart beat if it didnt mean having to set every last detail back up again when I unlock the phone.
And yes, being virtually OCD about this phone sucks, lol.

For those under-clocking or using UV kernels, do you see a noticeable improvement in battery life? I have a GSM sock GNex and the battery life is atrocious.

Should of unlocked the bootloader day one before playing with the phone your phone still remains stock. Just the bootloader is unlocked, you'll virtually feel no difference. Except the fact that you have to relock for warranty purposes later but you'll wipe everything so that is always good because you don't want to exchange a phone with all of your passwords.
@andythefan: Yes there is a huge battery difference. Visit the Franco Kernel thread in GSM forums for people's images of battery history.
Flash the James Bond kernel so your gpu will be upped to 384mhz. It is in the development section.

Other kernels also have this feature. A lot of them do.
@stevessvt: In the myriad different combo's I've flashed (ARHD, Franco kernel, APex Kernel, bigxie ROM, AOKP rom, stock kernel, OC/No OC, Unvervolting, and 1 other kernel I can't even remember) I've yet to encounter a single random reboot, FC, or battery pull. I've also flashed countless different mods and basebands, etc.
It's all about doing your homework and really reading through threads before flashing and making sure different stuff is compatible and doing nandroids.
I can honestly say running a non-stock rom/kernel makes a noticeable difference in response and performance in daily use. Its really all the Kernel IMO, ROM's just give you features. I've however never noticed anything from OCing.
@andyfan: what build are you on? 4.0.2 has the hands down best battery life, and 4.0.3 with the Franco Kernel is nearly as good as 4.0.2 was (4.0.2 for me meant ~3% drain in 8 hours)

For now any phone usage will give you terrible battery life due to the high power consumption of the screen especially if when it displays white onscreen content. Average CPU usage is very low unless you're running benchmarks consistently. Therefore UV tweaks have low impact on usage battery life.
With that said if your battery is irregularly draining while idle something may be active in the background.
Franco has made many tweaks to his kernel to reduce idle power consumption. He's gotten it down to about less than 1% drain per hour which can give you over 2 days of idle battery life. Just for ****s and giggles I have achieved that with less than 30 minutes of screen time with LTE enabled.
Franco's kernel is the best I've used in terms of overall battery life but none of the OC/UV kernels have significantly increased my usage battery life.

hey guys, i am looking for a kernel that will save me on battery. i am running zombie 4 rom. it says it runs the dark x kernel. i don't need to be running at super speeds but i don't want screen freezes either. i just want to be able to play my satellite radio without the phone draining 3 percent every 5 min or so. any help would be great.

I would be interested in this as well. Currently I am Rooted and have tried a few ROM's but haven't found one yet that doesn't have some bug or another. {Granted, I haven't tried them all} Tried one ROM that really distorted my custom made Wallpapers, which is a big deal to me. So... yes, any info on a better battery life Kernel would be welcome.
Currently I am not a "heavy user" on the phone. Talk - Text - You Tube occasionally... that's it. Constantly looking for better ways to improve this already amazing phone.
Eugenes kernel has given me great battery life. Either get down with Eugene's Macnut ROM which already has it or search for it under the general section under the bounty thread for Eugene. Its in page....58?
Keep in mind that the "beta" kernel does not have bln support but works just fine so long as you use the lionheart governor.
If you can't find the bounty thread then I'm sorry for you.
Synergy kernel has been awesome on battery for many.

I second just using macnut rom. I've tried em all, and his always gets the best battery life (for me).
I also undervolt via system tuner pro so that I'm at 1137 at 1.51

How you use your phone determines the best way to get the best battery life. Basically there are two ways to save battery: cutting power when not in use and delivering less power to the processors.
If you use your phone intermittently throughout the day for texts or calls, you'll get the best battery results from kernels/ROMs/apps that cut unnecessary functions when you're not using the phone. For example, juice defender cuts your wifi and mobile data when your screen is off and reactivates it every 15min (can be configured otherwise) to check for notifications. Darkside's Digital Warfare utilizes something called "deep sleep" which actually completely turns off your processors when the screen is off, but keeps the basic cell radio on so if you receive a text/phone call it will wake up the processor. These functions have the largest and safest impact on battery life.
If you're constantly using your phone and you want better battery life, you basically only have one option: undervolting. This is essentially supplying less power to your processors, which can be done through system tuner. It's not a free ticket, however; if you undervolt too low then at higher frequencies (playing games, etc.) your processor will become unstable and your phone will randomly reboot. If you encounter this, then don't undervolt that much and up the voltage to the last safe level. Just for reference, undervolting by 50mV is usually considered safe and undervolting past 100mV usually results in boot loops. But how far you can actually undervolt depends on your individual phone hardware, there's no universal answer. Make sure to not set your undervolt settings to set at boot until you find a stable voltage. Otherwise, you'll be forced to restore a nandroid if you encounter a bootloop.
TL;DR
If your phone already lasts a day and you want it to last 2-3 days, look into ROMs/kernels/apps that cut unnecessary functions when not in use. Most effective way to extend battery.
If your phone lasts 8 hours and you want it to last a day because you're a heavy user, look into undervolting with system tuner.

I've used cm9 and aokp the past month and tried the stock Kernels that come with it and Franco's. One thing is for certain. No matter combination I get horrible battery life. If I run stock android with my extended battery including various Widgets I get 24 hours battery life pretty easily. Moderate usage and some heavy usage. With cm9 I'm getting maybe 15-16 hrs with aokp maybe 8-9 hers and I'm using Franco's kernel right now. I don't understand this. People talk about how much better the battery life is with various ROMS than stock but I'm not getting it. I'm getting like half the battery life I was before. Any ideas?

I can relate to you. Was in CM9 and Franko's kernel and as you said, horrible battery life. I went back to stock but this time I did not install apps thar would require services running (well I have to run WhatsApp so that's the only one running besides default abdroid services).
I am seeing better battery life this way.
The next step would be to install CM9 and restore all my apps to see if I can replicate the same battery life.

you need to find out what apps are keeping your phone from sleeping dude its not the ROM or Kernel if you want to find out you can use better battery stats or just read the permissions on your apps otherwise its probably cause your on your phone too much with the screen on first show use a usage screen shot then how many apps you have we can narrow it down

I'm getting about 1.5 hrs screen time. With stock in was getting 2-3hrs. As far as apps keeping my phone from sleeping. I'm running the same apps I run on stock android when I was getting a full day on average so not sure how they would run different because I'm on a ROM.

I used that better battery stats app and apparently there was audio something (sorry can't remember the exact words) causing partial wakelocks, read some google search results and disabled the lock screen sound in aokp and it went away, go figure?
I swear my battery life is better with the kernel that comes with AOKP rather than franco, which was a bummer since I'd just bought the franco updater app, perhaps just my imagination or maybe something just needs to be tweaked
Well, this has pretty much nothing to do with the ROMs/kernels, you flash to the device. If you use the device for heavy gaming, you use loads of apps etc. the battery life will obviously be bad, because the CPU needs the according CPU clock speed...
Underclock the CPU, or better: Get AnTuTu CPU Master pro, and set the profiles, underclock screen off, to 700 MHz, and every other proile, where you do not neccessarily need the device to that speed, not below, otherwise it will just crash... That way you have the best battery life, for your usage, so basically, every time you switch the device's screen off, it will save a hell of a load of battery
Under clocking doesn't do much for battery life contrary to popular belief. It just increases the time it takes to process a task. It might take 1s at 1.2ghz vs 1.8s at 800ghz to complete a given task for example. So yes the cpu will run at lower speed and voltage but it still also take longer to return to idle.

Well, I don't really mean to break this, because it is right, but not completely...
Underclocking & undervolting, when the device is not in use (Screen off) saves loads of battery...
And because it's a dual-core, it takes mostly just as long to open an app at 700 MHz, as when you're doing it at stock clock speed, or voltage or higher.. So, in that case...

Not sure how this wouldn't have to do with the different ROMS and kernels since I stated what battery life I was getting with stock vs using a custom kernel and ROMS. I'm giving a comparison of my battery on each with the same usasge and they are different.

Okay so today I tried MIUI. The battery life blows stock android, aokp and cm9 away. I had over 3hrs of screen time today. Night and day compared to cm9 and aokp. I really don't get this.
