Why do I get horrible battery life with ROMS and Kernels? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I've used cm9 and aokp the past month and tried the stock Kernels that come with it and Franco's. One thing is for certain. No matter combination I get horrible battery life. If I run stock android with my extended battery including various Widgets I get 24 hours battery life pretty easily. Moderate usage and some heavy usage. With cm9 I'm getting maybe 15-16 hrs with aokp maybe 8-9 hers and I'm using Franco's kernel right now. I don't understand this. People talk about how much better the battery life is with various ROMS than stock but I'm not getting it. I'm getting like half the battery life I was before. Any ideas?

I can relate to you. Was in CM9 and Franko's kernel and as you said, horrible battery life. I went back to stock but this time I did not install apps thar would require services running (well I have to run WhatsApp so that's the only one running besides default abdroid services).
I am seeing better battery life this way.
The next step would be to install CM9 and restore all my apps to see if I can replicate the same battery life.

you need to find out what apps are keeping your phone from sleeping dude its not the ROM or Kernel if you want to find out you can use better battery stats or just read the permissions on your apps otherwise its probably cause your on your phone too much with the screen on first show use a usage screen shot then how many apps you have we can narrow it down

I'm getting about 1.5 hrs screen time. With stock in was getting 2-3hrs. As far as apps keeping my phone from sleeping. I'm running the same apps I run on stock android when I was getting a full day on average so not sure how they would run different because I'm on a ROM.

I swear my battery life is better with the kernel that comes with AOKP rather than franco, which was a bummer since I'd just bought the franco updater app, perhaps just my imagination or maybe something just needs to be tweaked

Well, this has pretty much nothing to do with the ROMs/kernels, you flash to the device. If you use the device for heavy gaming, you use loads of apps etc. the battery life will obviously be bad, because the CPU needs the according CPU clock speed...
Underclock the CPU, or better: Get AnTuTu CPU Master pro, and set the profiles, underclock screen off, to 700 MHz, and every other proile, where you do not neccessarily need the device to that speed, not below, otherwise it will just crash... That way you have the best battery life, for your usage, so basically, every time you switch the device's screen off, it will save a hell of a load of battery

Under clocking doesn't do much for battery life contrary to popular belief. It just increases the time it takes to process a task. It might take 1s at 1.2ghz vs 1.8s at 800ghz to complete a given task for example. So yes the cpu will run at lower speed and voltage but it still also take longer to return to idle.

Well, I don't really mean to break this, because it is right, but not completely...
Underclocking & undervolting, when the device is not in use (Screen off) saves loads of battery...
And because it's a dual-core, it takes mostly just as long to open an app at 700 MHz, as when you're doing it at stock clock speed, or voltage or higher.. So, in that case...

Not sure how this wouldn't have to do with the different ROMS and kernels since I stated what battery life I was getting with stock vs using a custom kernel and ROMS. I'm giving a comparison of my battery on each with the same usasge and they are different.

A lot of people say AOSP ROMs are good on battery life cuz the sense is gone.
Try out Xplod RLS (one of my favs) test it out see how it goes for you. It's an AOSP btw.
For sense I recommend Tommytomatoes Classic v0.0.0.4 its awesome!
How long does your battery last? Are you running mobile data all day? GPS?
I can get around 20-24 hours put of my battery with real heavy usage. Around 2 days with normal use.
I keep my 3g and everything off until i need it.
HTC EVO 4G running Mikg 2.58
Don't know who your talkin too but I'll reply lol
On Classic I'm gettin roughly about 1d 19h 43m with pretty decent usage text, call, xda, browsing jus putting it to charge right now
I have always had the best success with AOSP and custom kernel.
Currently running ICSmod7 with latest tiamets. With 4g it drops fast but without I get through a full day no worries medium use. Text, fb, music during workout ect...

I've been experimenting with ROMs and kernels for the last 18 months, always looking for best battery life with regular to heavy use. A good custom kernel will sometimes give you an extra 10-15 %. Using setCPU or another app like systemtuner (my pref) to turn CPU down while screen off can also give you 5-10%. Far and away the best thing for my battery is to use an alternative launcher (ADW for me) and then use Titanium backup pro or systemtuner to freeze sense. you just find the two elements in the process list that start with "HTC sense" and freeze them. Night and day. FYI I run synergy and have always come back to Myn's ROMs cause they are good for battery from the start, but they also take well to pretty much any custom kernel, which isn't true for all ROMs. I like everything to work so I always ditch AOSP ROMs a few days after trying them.

Underclocking your CPU typically causes higher battery drain... unless you're overclocking. As long as nothing is really hammering the CPU in the background (which is the problem, not the CPU speed!), then it's better to let the CPU enter higher power states in order to finish the work quicker and return to low power sleep state. Intel calls this HUGI (Hurry Up and Get Idle). Overclocking can have bad effects with HUGI due to the higher voltage required to run at those frequencies. Lol'd at your AOSP comment though. I suppose some people are okay with subpar android, aka sense .
My Evo can last a week on a single charge. CM7.1, 1850 mAh aftermarket battery (slim, stock battery cover), Tiamat 4.1.0 kernel, aggressive undervolting and monitoring of wakelocks combined with 90% wifi usage (3g is the #1 source of battery drain!).

Underclocking is when you set the speed of the processor to a lower setting than the stock clocks where as undervolting is lowering the voltage needed to run it at a certain speed be it stock underclocked or overclocked. Simplest way I understand it.

Real culprit for batt issues
Has anyone ever bothered to understand that theres a pesty bug no one knew of.. Called CIQ "carrier IQ"
Ya this is one of the main reasons behind bad batt.. Sprint and other carriers allow a company to monitor and chart everything we do and it mirrors off txts and data sent and is designed to pick up on.key words... Basically an Invasive tracking monitor. It's a huge in noticed drain... And its been shown to be removed from system/app in many custom roms. But it never does cause its so strattled throughout the OS.

Kernels don't seem to do anything.

Ever since i flashed francos kernel for the first time i failed to see any difference whatsoever in batterylife or performance. 4 versions of franco kernel later and still no change. Even bought his app and tried undervolting. I accidentaly uv'd by 100 in the 700 category and none of the side effects were happening so i tried undervolting all by 200 and even setting on boot. Nothing happened. I then flashed jame bond kernel and nothing happened. When i tried flashing glados kernel it just froze on boot. I experimented with all of them for at least a day and except glados which didn't work they all showed no difference than stock regarding battery life or performance. What could be the cause of this?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Kernels don't have the profound effect you might think on this phone. Not nearly as much as devices I have had in the past.
I'm aware of that, but still. No difference whatsoever? Even when i intentionally try and break it by undervolting by 200?

Yeah, on the Fascinate, Kernels had much more of a profound effect. I can't say the same for this phone. But the OP said that he purposely tried to Bork his phone to see if it worked and it didn't even touch it. That's really strange. I can purposely try to Bork mine and do a pretty damn good job of it.

Some kernels had broken UV interfaces that wouldn't undervolt the kernel and would allow you to undervolt by absurd amounts. (though it wasn't actually doing anything)

Well, are all the most popular kernels broken? Franco, glados, jame bond? I'm more inclined to think the problem is localized (either me or my phone).
And i'm running aokp 20, btw. Had 19 and milestone2 before those, which were all installed after full wipes (before anyone suggests that).

Your not the only one with this problem as I too have seen no change in battery performance on my gnex. I'm also using aokp 20 and Franco's (14.4). What I don't get however is that my buddy seems to see significant improvement in his phone while running the same rom/kernel combo
I've had some friends do some tests for me and run stock kernels for a while.
The differences in performance and battery life were menial between custom and stock.
What about all those people that claim seeing improved battery life? Not to mention those impresive screenshots of battery stats that show numbers i have yet to even come close to.

naturally. also, data calls are a huge battery drainer, even with excellent reception, when actually using the phone. the same with wifi.
to give the op an example, this last night i forgot wifi on. connected to my home network. the phone slept well (something woke it up in the middle but for a very short period of time, probably gmail), and i only lost 3%. i normally loose 1% in 7hrs approx., so it wasnt so bad.
on the other hand, if screenOn is true, it will obviously drain faster..

Also i lost about 2%/hour with franco in standby. I had mobile data connected and autosync only for google account + yahoo mail, all set to sync each hour.
Waiting on trinity now. Curious if i notice any difference besides the lack of franco's blueish tint.

My own or stock. I experiment a lot. Currently I am running a custom with a tweaked deadline scheduler, and a slightly different oc method for gpu and cpu than everyone is using to 1.35ghz. Stock voltages, tweaked ramdisk for filesystem mounts. Stock sleep profile of 350/700 on Interactive. Not using Setcpu to overclock at all. I set the power profile in fw-res to include the extra speed step.
So far so good, but its too early to tell. I went to bed and work up 9 hours off battery with 99% remaining. So its definitely deep sleeping fine I won't know for a couple days on whether it sucks battery dry or not.

exactly. I used to go crazy doing this and that, disabling this and that to try to get 20+ hours that people were getting on stock battery. Then I came to realize that the screenshots are probably mostly sleep time. Me being a very social person (text, IM, Facebook, and Tweet a lot) there is no way I was ever gonna get anywhere near 20 hours on stock. So I bought a couple of spare batteries, turned stuff back on, turn the screen back on brightly and enjoyed the phone and its great screen without worrying about battery life

I would be interested in this as well. Currently I am Rooted and have tried a few ROM's but haven't found one yet that doesn't have some bug or another. {Granted, I haven't tried them all} Tried one ROM that really distorted my custom made Wallpapers, which is a big deal to me. So... yes, any info on a better battery life Kernel would be welcome.
Currently I am not a "heavy user" on the phone. Talk - Text - You Tube occasionally... that's it. Constantly looking for better ways to improve this already amazing phone.
Eugenes kernel has given me great battery life. Either get down with Eugene's Macnut ROM which already has it or search for it under the general section under the bounty thread for Eugene. Its in page....58?
Keep in mind that the "beta" kernel does not have bln support but works just fine so long as you use the lionheart governor.

How you use your phone determines the best way to get the best battery life. Basically there are two ways to save battery: cutting power when not in use and delivering less power to the processors.
If you use your phone intermittently throughout the day for texts or calls, you'll get the best battery results from kernels/ROMs/apps that cut unnecessary functions when you're not using the phone. For example, juice defender cuts your wifi and mobile data when your screen is off and reactivates it every 15min (can be configured otherwise) to check for notifications. Darkside's Digital Warfare utilizes something called "deep sleep" which actually completely turns off your processors when the screen is off, but keeps the basic cell radio on so if you receive a text/phone call it will wake up the processor. These functions have the largest and safest impact on battery life.
If you're constantly using your phone and you want better battery life, you basically only have one option: undervolting. This is essentially supplying less power to your processors, which can be done through system tuner. It's not a free ticket, however; if you undervolt too low then at higher frequencies (playing games, etc.) your processor will become unstable and your phone will randomly reboot. If you encounter this, then don't undervolt that much and up the voltage to the last safe level. Just for reference, undervolting by 50mV is usually considered safe and undervolting past 100mV usually results in boot loops. But how far you can actually undervolt depends on your individual phone hardware, there's no universal answer. Make sure to not set your undervolt settings to set at boot until you find a stable voltage. Otherwise, you'll be forced to restore a nandroid if you encounter a bootloop.
TL;DR
If your phone already lasts a day and you want it to last 2-3 days, look into ROMs/kernels/apps that cut unnecessary functions when not in use. Most effective way to extend battery.
If your phone lasts 8 hours and you want it to last a day because you're a heavy user, look into undervolting with system tuner.

stock rom. Just download a battery manager from the Market.

Battery drain on clean Rom installs.

The last few nights, I have tried a few different JB Roms. All with the same results. My GNex has a full charge before I go to bed, I wake to my phone telling me to charge it 8 hours later. With NO wifi or network data on. This can't be normal.
The roms:
ASCENT 3.0
Jelly Belly 4.0
New Unofficial Cyanogen Release.
No extra apps installed. Purely stock.
Tonight, I'll try it in airplane mode, and see if my network coverage is what's draining the battery. But for the most part I'm never without a signal.
Any ideas or ways I can see if the battery is just bad?
Also, what would the current Verizon radios be? I believe mine are up to date, but I guess that could be an issue if it is indeed my network signal being dropped.
Im on the 07/27 fitsugly cm10 rom with r225 franco kernel and for some reason my battery life has gone through the roof, after 30 hours of being on the battery is still at 56%. Minooch + franco.Kernel #223 (see attached files). I haven't used my phone much in past 24 hours, but battery life is awesome. I use latest bootloader and radio firmware, CPU is set on interactive governor, 1420-384MHz, max screen off CPU frequancy - 729MHz, 512MHz on GPU.
I think I tried that ROM before, not sure if its just for maguro. I have a Verizon toro.

If you don't need the higher clocked gpu speeds then just stick with the 384mhz kernel.

Pretty much identical battery life im getting right now, battery monitor is saying im sipping 8mA of battery when idling.
Yeah, No MiNCO toro release. :|
Went with the ROM and latest Kernel, and I can't believe the battery life. Tonight will be the real test though.

Try better battery stats... I am on gsm nexus.
I tried jelly belly, minco , paranoid android, and xenonHD plus bigxies stock. I've used Francisco Francos kernel on bigxies and that gave good battery life but the others all burned cpu and battery, specifically via Android.mediascanningservice. and maps.
Right now I am back to stock 4.1.1 rooted courtesy of rom toolkit and with better battery stats and cpu spy I have a cool phone.
One thing you should be aware of is if you have a lot of media on your phone the scanning service can take a long time to run and calm down. I I upgraded my bosses razr to ICS and his phone took all night to update I guess he has lots of music on it...
To increase battery life you can install titanium backup and freeze maps, and wallet when I not in use. You can install rescan media from the app store and trunk off media scanning service. Or just buy a bigger battery.
This is not a knock on the custom roms. The rom teams mentioned above they are all awesome and are the reason us crackflashers have so much fun. I have learned lots from this experience and have a better grasp on how my phone works due to the efforts of these devs. For now I am sticking with stock... I'm sure I'll be flashing again soon.
You can never judge a ROM on battery life within a day. Every ROM I flash gets bad battery on the first cycle and most the time even the second cycle. You really have to stick with a ROM/kernel combination for at least a few days to be able to judge battery life. It may just be a placebo effect but I use a battery calibration app each time I flash

Im on the 07/27 fitsugly cm10 rom with r225 franco kernel and for some reason my battery life has gone through the roof, after 30 hours of being on the battery is still at 56%. Granted im not using it much now but still i've never seen this type of battery life before. Overnight the battery dropped maybe 4% at best, wifi is always on and its fetching emails.

Resetting battery stats accomplishes nothing related to battery life or reported percentage. It's been debunked some time back by Google.

[Q] Help! Flashed Jelly Bean, down to ~6hrs Standby Battery Life

I flashed Jellybean for my gnex this last weekend, and I've noticed a severely precipitous drop in battery life (15% in 90 min, 15 min screen on). I found this yesterday when my phone went completely dead after just 6 hours on idle, despite running some pretty severe power-saving options. I can literally see the battery draining as I took the screenshots to post.
Running 4.1.1 stock, Franco Kernel Version 5 (power save powermode), 2100 mAh battery - I tried to provide as much information as I can in the screenshots. The weird thing is that none of the information stands out as an obvious power-drain, its just falling for what I believe to be no good reason.
Please help!
First of all: congrats if providing such detailed information about your battery information! (I'm being serious, not sarcastic)
Secondly, have you tried running it with WiFi only to see if there's a difference? Also, you need to go through about 2-3 charge cycles before you have a good idea of our battery range.
Also, what kernel are you using?

I have same problem, 1750 stock battery only lasts about 3 hours....

Kernel
I'm hoping its just running it a few charge cycles fixes the problem, because my battery meter is like a countdown clock right now.
I'm running 3.0.41-franco.Kernel-Milestone5.

I reccommend getting cpu sleeper. Its brillant and saves me tons of battery
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eugene373.cpu.sleep&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5ldWdlbmUzNzMuY3B1LnNsZWVwIl0.
CPU Sleep
Thanks! However, I'm already running on only one core, from a setting in Franco's app.
My problem is that there doesn't seem to be anything glaring that is draining my battery. Awake time is slightly more than I'd like, but not nearly enough to drain the battery at 10% an hour with the screen off.
And for the above poster, I have not tried running it with wifi only and no mobile data - wifi at my office is spotty, and I'd like the conditions I am testing it at to try to mirror how I would normally use my phone.

hmmm... did u try replacing the battery?
Battery
No - the battery worked just fine on ICS as of last Friday (28 hours standby charge). I would hope that flashing ROMs/Kernels would not actually damage it.
Thanks for trying to help - I'm really confused since all the ratios look comparable to people who get great battery life, but for some reason, just seem to suck about 5x more battery for me, so its impossible to pinpoint one specific culprit. I thought it was a mis-calibration, but apparently that is just a myth.

Let me start by saying that I am not an expert, but the following tips helped me. I agree with the WiFi and the detail you provided was great. I see that you are running 4G, this will eat up the battery. Your ROM may have a toggle for the 4G (LTE) and 3G (CDMA). If you have WiFi available I would use that. You may want to turn off the NFC (system setting>Wireless & Networks More....) unless you use google wallet or share screen alot. Also, I had horrible results with the Facebook app running in the background, which I have taken off my phone. I set a bookmark in dolphin browser instead of using the app.
If you are not seeing any improvements with in the next few battery cycles you may try wiping the battery stats in Recovery. The first ROM I flashed from stock my battery life was all over the map and wiping battery stats helped. I ran the same Franco Kernel and was getting 2.5 -3 hrs of screen time. Hope this helps.
also, get CpuSpy from the market, and see which speeds your cpu is using (or not using).
Not that this will help software issues but Sprint is giving away a free 2100Mah extended battery with the door. You just have to pay for the shipping. No scam at all, I think they know that they have a glitchy piece of product and need to help calm us down. Just call telesales and tell them you own a Gnex.
CPU Speeds
Almost exclusively at 384 or 729 mHz, capped at 1026.

So that means that the CPU isn't going into deep sleep, which is an issue.
All I can suggest is reflash with a full wipe, and reinstall the apps you can, and slowly weed out any rogue apps that could be causing said issue.

Deep Sleep
Sorry, I meant that when awake, the vast majority of the clock speeds are 384 and 729. I am in deep sleep approximately 75% of the time.
If no solution comes up in this thread, I will try re-flashing to stock JB/stock JB kernel tomorrow night to see if it just needed a few recharge cycles to stabilize, and if not, if wiping/reinstalling helps.

Yeah, that seems to be the general experience here. My phone is down to ~28% since the OP. Again, the proportions in which things are draining power are correct, they are just doing it too quickly (1% per minute of screen time).
I'm going to completely wipe and re-flash JB tonight, keeping the stock kernel this time, unless someone can help me out.

Did u flash francos kernel yet ?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Yes - every process/screen is drawing the typical percentage of power use (~50% screen, 8% Phone Idle, 8% cell standby), but the battery is draining 4x faster than it should. Francos app shows me running at completely standard voltage, and I'm on the powersave mode. I think it must be a battery indicator/stats issue, otherwise the proportions would be all off.
