Standard Disclaimer
I take no responsibility if this breaks your phone. You've been warned...but that being said, this won't break your phone...you should be good to go.
What this isn't
- This is not a built from source rom. I did not take hours and hours tweaking source code but give mad props to those who do.
Features
- 5.10.605.9 Base
- Sense 2.1 where necessary
- Uses ADW Launcher, if you prefer another one, you can use that, but it comes with ADW.
- Deodexed
- Debloated
- All sense based widgets have been removed. A lot of Sense Apps have been removed. Important things that are still sense are the camera, contacts/dialer, and Settings (even though they have been themed)
- AOSP apps include Email, GenieWidget, DeskClock, Calendar,
File Manager, Music, and Car Dock
- Zip-Aligned
- Advanced Power Options (4-in-1 Reboot)
- Removed Recent Apps from Notification Menu
- Custom Boot Animation
- Semi-Transparent Notification section
- Activated overscroll glow
- Battery Mod
- AOSP Sliding tab lockscreen (use WidgetLocker for now if you would like others. I am working on getting multiple lock screens now)
- ICS Theme
How to install
1. Download, check MD5 and place on root of sd card
2. reboot into CWR and MAKE A NAND BACKUP!!!!
3. Wipe Data/ Factory Reset
4. Wipe Dalvik Cache
5. Flash rom and enjoy
Download
Twisted Senseless 1.3.1
MD5: f80403b1414ece7427996f868cade49c
NOTE: If anyone knows of any FTP sites that do no restrict your bandwidth and are relatively cheap, I am in need of one so I can actually upload my roms and not worry about the links getting broken due to "too high of traffic"

Not yet, but they will come. I may do an ICS one, but honestly, I love the plain GB feel. There will be a vanilla theme...just like with my roms for the thunderbolt, and there may be some others. I'm not the best themer, but all who theme have my permission to make some.
My kind of Rom right here...loving it. Will be on my phone before football tomorrow

Is there anyway to change the incoming call lockscreen to sliding tabs instead of sense.

Just curious what does this bring to the table that your sense Rom doesnt? As well as what's the game changer "senseless" has that aosp doesn't have. I have liked senseless roms in the past on my Eris. But that was before it got cm ported.

It seems like this rom is stripped of Sense as much as possible while still maintaining functionality.
For me this is the best of both AOSP and Sense worlds. It is as fast and smooth as an AOSP rom with the stability of a Sense rom. Some things just work better with a Sense framework. For example, with aosp roms, when clicking on "Update All" in the market app, not ALL apps will update, some will fail, and I'm not including the ones with changed permissions. A sense rom will update all apps without a hiccup. Other stuff works better too, can't think of them right now.
The inclusion of the sense camera and dialer is exactly the only 2 things that I wanted carried over from sense.
Great work dhemke17. It reminds me of the "Insensitive" rom for the Inc1.
---------- Post added at 01:38 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:19 AM ----------
Great rom, it's my daily driver right now.
Requests/suggestions/notes:
- Hold Volume Up button to skip track when screen is off
- CM style status bar drop down settings
- Runnymede framework, the camera on Sense 3.5 is really nice
- Different font perhaps, the current default looks cool, but hard to read when it's everywhere.
- Include an OC/UV kernel
All of the above is minor stuff. Nothing to complain about really. I look forward to future versions.

Once I get around to making a Twisted Sense 3.5 rom, expect a version of this rom to follow suit.
The CM style drop down is impossible without the rom being AOSP. This is one of the catches to using a sense-based senseless rom.
Volume Up to skip track will happen lol. Thats an amazing idea and since I use music more than anything on my device, be expecting that.
I will include an OC/UV kernel as soon as I find one that I truly like. I need it to be as reliable as possible because its a real pain to fix "rom" issues when it comes down to the end-user using a half-jacked kernel. I may get into kernel development just for this purpose.
Font...if someone wants to pull the stock font from an AOSP rom, do it, zip it, and I can toss it in an update.zip. Its in the folder /system/fonts/. Just pull the entire folder.

1) This is has many if not all of the same features that the sense-based rom has, it has just been stripped of as much of the sense UI as possible. This makes the rom itself smaller and it results in less lag from the stock UI. For those who don't like all the flashy widgets and apps that sense brings to the table, but they enjoy everything functioning properly, this is for them.
2) As far as comparing this to AOSP, this rom will not be as fast, but you will not have the bugs seen in AOSP roms. Battery life will not mysteriously drain, everything WILL work as the phone came, just by using as many of the AOSP apps as possible without having the phone being actually AOSP. This is a hybrid rom and as such, you can expect it to be as reliable as sense based roms with an AOSP look and feel.
- Hope this answers your questions.

Just FYI,
The button for switching to the front facing camera doesn't seem to work, or front facing camera doesn't work.
The gallery button on the camera app doesn't do anything. Would it be possible to install the htc gallery app?
USB mass storage doesn't work, the icon doesn't show up at all in the status bar, but USB debugging shows up. But I'm not using the built in kernel.

Install the update for the gallery crap...as for the ffc and USB mass storage, its probably the kernel as mine works fine with the kernel installed.
Is there a way to theme the sense dialer to black with white numbers to match the gb theme.

usb storage should be fixed in dres's kernels as of #21 (its 2.3.3 source with changes to work with 2.3.4+...although new source is out, no one seems to be working on it actively), so my guess would be the individual was using an older kernel that they were previously using with a 2.3.3 rom

Been using Calk's builds for a long time now. Seems my taste in ROMs is very similar to his. Keep in mind "the best" is extremely subjective.

I like the combination of performance and battery life of the kernel he chose to use. He also does an awesome job getting a bunch of graphical changes for the "cool" factor too.
Beyond the ROM, Calk contributes a lot of other things to the community. He's been making kitchen and kitchen development tools for the Windows Mobile groups for a while and I was very pleased to see him come to the Android team at the same time I made the leap. It's a big change for people like me that have been Windows Mobile sideline hackers for a while and it's really nice to see a familiar face.

Good info... I'm currently running CM6 and loving it, but I'm torn what to try next... EViO, Baked Snack and VaelPak are all possibilities.
None of the ROM's really have the exact thing I want. Ideally, I'd like a ROM that has the following:
- Sense E-mail App
- Sense Calendar App
- Sense Lock Screen
- Sense Status Bar (with Custom Battery Icon)
- AOSP Contacts & Dialer
- AOSP Messaging (SMS/MMS)
- AOSP Gallery
- 4G Support
- FM Radio
- WiFi/Wired Tether
- Sprint Bloatware Removed (apart from Sprint TV)
- ADK Laucher (easy to add after the fact)
Any ideas on how to get this? I wish I was a Dev... I would build my own

I would think that this wouldn't be that tough. Try starting with a Sense ROM, pull out the dialer/messaging/gallery and whatever else you don't want, then install the AOSP apps you want. I'm sure the apk's can be found around here.

Is it as simple as just uninstalling the Sense apk's that I don't want and installing the AOSP ones? If so, I can probably restore the apps I want from a Titanium backup of CM6. For some reason I thought it was more involved that that - especially with the AOSP Contacts & Dialer.

Agree entirely with Dissenter. Calk brings a lot to the table.
Really enjoyed Hero's early EVO work and Baked is still great. Also used Cyanogen on my G1 forever, but Calk's stuff has been stable, fast and clean (at least for me) as long or longer than anyone else on EVO. It is a beautiful thing. I had problems with most of the other ROMs, but for the EVO, Hero and Calk always seem to have there kitchens working.

So, what would you say are the pros/cons of EViO vs. Baked Snack?
there is a fine line between the "best rom" and my "favorite rom"
best i have had was a stock rooted rom, granted it wasnt fast but it had everything working and no bugs that i could find ...
my fav has been CM6 ... fast and snappy ... but lacking the Fm radio and 4G i disire ...
i have a hard time finding a big difference between sense roms ... but thats just me, i'm slow on this stuff still
I like Fresh 3.2

Ya, where's the love?
I prefer my evo burnt for sure.
modded fresh for me. Dude is on point with his ROMs.
Gotta have my Apps2SD support.
Thinking about coming out with my own ROM based solely off of his as a base.
Evio cured my flashaholic's issues for a while, but with Baked Snack update and the Evio update its tough, i have to give the slight edge to fresh right now because of the new release, that thing is sick. I am pumped once that thing hits the street its going to be on! Too many choices is a good thing as i think the Evo is THE android device to have with all the Dev support
My two cents
1. Fresh 3.28
1.a Evio
1.a Baked Snacks
YMMV

is there any way to get sense apps like the Music, camera, and phone onto vanlla phones or on cyanogen
I was hoping there was a way to get the dialer from a sense rom onto any stock rom. I actually may try that out later this week and see if it works (doubtful).
It requires sense framework for the Widgets as I've asked this before, as far as camera mods and what not I've seen that on vanilla roms but I'm sure there are geniuses that dwell on XDA that could figure it out.
Sent from my Google Phone
Eventually, there will be hacked up ROMs with bits and pieces from every corner of the earth - I wanted the same thing on my Nexus (stock with the HTC cam) and there were a few options (though all had bugs here and there). Given the G2 was *just* permrooted, it might be a few weeks/months before you see some really creative ROMs.
Other stuff, like the lockscreen, can be changed with apps like widgetlocker and such.
You should definitely try out the Desire Z rom, though. It's all kinds of awesome, with new features that weren't there in previous versions of Sense. Hell, the camera app alone is worth it - makes the stock Android camera app look like a joke.
Sense apps have never and will never work on a non-sense based rom as it has far too much reliance on lots of frameworks (its a messy area).
The closest you will get is a rom like SuperVillain (out later today) that is a Sense based rom but with Rosie (Launcher) and widgets removed so looks like vanilla but still has all the sense apps working.
Keep an eye on villainrom.co.uk or the dev section here on xda for the rom release of SuperVillainZ

Enomther's TheOfficial has the option of both the HTC Camera and the HTC Music app - plus you can install the HTC IME (onscreen keyboard) easily as an APK (there's even a kitchen that lets you customize the colors and such).
Your sig claims you've owned 4 android phones. So you're obviously not a super noob. So my question to you is -
Did searching just not occur to you, or did you honestly believe you were not the 7,548th person to ask this question?
I am not asking about sense widgets because im aware that i need to have the sense framework running but im just wondering about the 2 apps Camera and Music. i know that enmothers rom gives you the option to install the 2 if you want and am just wondering if its possible to do the same for cyanogen.
also i have used the Sense Roms for the G2 but i was never really a fan of non Vanilla android.

A couple of apps may have been REBUILT to work without sense, but its not an easy job and certainly isn't something a lot of people have done.
the HTC IME keyboard was pretty much an entire rewrite of the code based on what the htc one looked like, its not the apk from sense just moved over.
I can't comment on the camera or music, but I imagine these are the same.

There has been a sense app ported to stock. Enom ported the HTC camera to his stock ROM for the Nexus... I remember running it.. That was a great ROM
Sorry, I see this has already been covered... But I know the app wasn't rewritten, it was a straight port, with the stock framework rewritten, so it was a straight app port

I really like the browser from sense, I use lpp for widgets so I'm good there. I asked about getting some sort of plug in for google translate onto vanilla browser and got nothing but flame. Hopefully gingie brings this to us... I mean is there any other plug ins other then flash? Honest question
Sent from my Google Phone
Alright.. so we all probably use virtuous rom, gingervillian, cyanogen or miui.
I wanna know why everyone chooses each one.. I've flashed all and am just curious to why everyone else chooses the roms they do.. what really makes you stay with the rom you have??
I run miui. To me cyanogen lacks full customization. And has no benefitial features over miui. I get same battery life and phone runs smoothly at 1ghz as it would on any other rom. ONLY issue is random reboots. Which is a theme issue not a rom issue.. And I don't care for sense roms.. to me they slow the phone down.. although I am waiting for cm7 to become stable before my first flash.
Sent from my G2.
Currently I am running MIUI. I'm still getting used to it but overall I like it. I love the UI. It looks clean and it's quick.
Stock post ota deodexed.... because every other rom gives me some sort of problem that there is no guide to fixing and I don't have the time to troubleshoot the bull****
Whats deodexed mean??
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
The 1.2Ghz clock speed from the God speed thread.
Anything higher than that affects my battery and I don't see any obvious benefit as I don't play any games that need a higher CPU.
virtuous because of eye candy and htc streams are awesome!!
which rom saves battery most?
I use CM6.1.1
I previously tried Virtuous because I always wanted a Sense phone but realized Sense actually sucks, well the messaging, gallery and dialer at least.
I use my phone heavily for A2DP bluetooth streaming and apperantly cyanogenmod is pretty much the best rom for bluetooth audio quality, also the added equalizer feature is awesome. Its just like the stock rom whish I loved since my nexus days but with just the right amount of customization.
MIUI looks annoying as hell, why not just buy an iDevice if your into that UI?

When you install an app, sometimes it comes with an odex file (i believe it's an extension of some sort to the app) When you are de-odex'd, it merges the extension (dot odex file) with the apk. The only reason I wanted this rom was to use themes for stock roms. I also found that it boots the phone up a hell of a lot faster.
Highly recommended for people who want the stock feel but like small mods here and there.

That's not a rom...
that's a kernel........... *facepalm*
I run Virtuous for a few reasons:
1. camera - the stock Android camera app is abysmal. Few options and not easy to use in the least.
2. music player - genre support is a big one for me
3. Sense - I use LauncherPro, but I prefer the sense contacts and other features.
4. I installed the 3D gallery from stock, so I have access to both. One other small benefit of the otherwise useless Sense gallery is a scrollable 'share' pop-up. On stock ROMs (or CM), if you have too many options in this menu, you can't scroll so you can't access them. Sense lets you scroll the 'share' list.

MIUI looks annoying as hell, why not just buy an iDevice if your into that UI?

Not everything about miui is iphonish... and even the parts that are you have options.. the menus? I turn those to the standard grid. the icons? Not all are uniformed "squares" all thou the theme is use they are. But I actually am I fan of uniformed icons. I think it looks cleaner.. imho. What about miui looks annoying?? I admit the original launcher is lame. But I don't use it.. I think docks and notification bars are lame. I don't use either and rock adw.. swipe down for notifications and up for apps. plus you can't tell me miui lock screen isn't sexy..

So, you just rooted your super awesome Android phone, thanks to Rivera82falcon and his awesome guide? You saw my awesome guide for flashing ROMS, and wanted to try it, but didn't know where to begin? Well, you're in the right place.
Also, don't blame me if your phone explodes into a million pieces and one gets stuck in your eye. Nothing you do is my fault. Well, here we go.
STEP ONE: AOSP or Sense?
You probably know what Sense is, but you might not know what AOSP is. It stands for Android Open Source Project. Basically, you are getting a base of stock gingerbread. Now let's talk about the advantages and disadvantages.
AOSP is far faster than most Sense ROMs, and offers more customization as far as themes and kernels. Keep in mind, you can't just install AOSP and put the sense launcher on it. It won't work. With AOSP, you can get Gingerbread, Froyo, or even Ice Cream Sandwich looks for your phone.
Sense, on the other hand, is usually slower, and sometimes offers limited customization when compared to the Theme engines for AOSP. Sense can feel sluggish sometimes, but can be very fast if the ROM is well built. It is not as streamlined as AOSP. On the other hand, you get all the awesome sense apps, like weather, clock, and calendar.
Personally, I switch back and forth between Sense an AOSP. They both have their advantages and disadvantages.
STEP TWO: How Much Is Working?
Many people see an awesome looking ROM and it says ALPHA or BETA, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything to people. They flash it and wonder why their radio doesn't work, or why WiFi won't connect. ALPHA ROMs are ROMs that are in the early testing phase and may have key functions broken or missing. Don't go on a vacation with an ALPHA ROM on your phone. Never flash one if you depend on your phone for your job. A BETA ROM is a ROM that is nearing the end of testing. It may still have broken features, but the core functions such as Radio, Data, WiFi, and SMS are often working. Don't flash this ROM if you are expecting a finished product, you will be disappointed. These ROMs are usually fairly slow as well. A vX.x.x ROM (ex: v1.0.1) is released to the public but probably still has some bugs like Bluetooth, MMS, or some other random issues. This ROM still might not be the fastest, but is still easily able to function. Anybody can flash these ROMs. RLSX (ex: RLS1) ROMs are released and are nearly finished. They may have some small bugs or not be fully optimized, but they are nearly perfect. Final ROMs are complete, and you can expect no further changes, usually.
STEP THREE: What Features/Look Does It Have?
Not all Sense and AOSP ROMs are created equal. Many look very different from each other and have very different features. For example, a Sense 2.1 and Sense 3.5 ROM are very different, and CM7 is very different from PoolParty. Read the entire OP and look at any screenshots provided. Make sure you like the look, so you don't waste time flashing it if you hate the look. That said, there is nothing wrong with flashing a ROM just to try it out.

I agree Collinjames, the new Affinity ROM is very nice, battery life is insanely good, and it's nearly bug free. My softkeys stopped lighting up so I went back to 2HD RLS1.1
What about including custom kernals AOSP and Sense?
Skyraider Zeus rom is worthy of the incredible, Incredible 2. No bugs which is the most important thing, has never crashed ever on me, that is incredibly important. I don't ever actually use sense exept for the great camera, lockscreen, and weather. But this rom is a no brainer really.
It gives you every option you could think of and has no downside.
I wish this nice little article was up when I was wasting my time trying out buggy roms.
I just feel puzzle about which rom to choose at that moment, thanks a lot for your guide.
liquid 3.x is a good aosp rom as well
Thanks for the post, I like how you broke down the advantages of each.. this has proven to be very helpful.
While i agree with you aosp choices..i think everyone should at least try miui...most customizable rom I've ever used...and looks great with go launcher or launcher pro.

Yeah, I tried MIUI for a few days. Although I like how customizable it is with all the themes available I found it too buggy. I kept getting lockups and reboots. I hoped the 11.18 release would have helped but it actually made it worse. Also, the lack of an app drawer was very hard to get used to. I'm still not sure I like that concept. I guess it's too iPhone-ish for me.

ok, so since I'm still learning here, when you flash a ROM does the kernel get changed too? Or is this something you have to flash in addition to the ROM?
yes it will change it to which ever kernel the rom
is supplied with. You can find the custom kernel you wish to use an then just flash it after the rom just make sure it's for aosp or sense which ever you choose to run.

AOSP-ISH 4.2 ROMS
TL;DR update to latest recovery if you plan on sticking with 4.2, every time you update your rom you will get a whole new set of sdcard/0. 4.2 way of handling multiple users for the phone.
More thorough of an explanation!!! 4.2. threads require the latest recovery of your choice (CWM or TWRP) to emulate proper layout for your sdcard (internal). It will setup the internal memory as so (at least for me lol)
/storage/sdcard0=internal
/storage/sdcard1=External
the point of it all was for multiple users to be able to use the device without issues. (more for tablets in a family home that people will share). I believe this is correct with all the formality, at least.

Very very good. All we need is a mod to make this thread sticky.
Sorry bro. Wasn't around to contribute. Turned out great. Had some things come up with my boy, holidays and such.

No worries at all, this only took about 6 hours of my time, at work hehe. If tomorrow is slow I'll do mods and and kernels and themes, maybe add scree shots also.

Great work dude I had other phones with bibles that made it easier for anyone to find what they want. Also is less Intimading for new users trying to flash a new rom so they can choose which ones they like as oppose to going in the development thread and seeing a whole bunch of roms at once lol. Would love the kernel section and this need to be sticky.

I'll be working on stuff later today pertaining to screenies and a more section. From launchers, to audio mods, boot animations, and kernels and such.

Once it gets "reasonably" finished, we will definitely consider it. I put reasonably in quotes because it will never BE finished as ROMs get updated constantly.
@Mt3g, if you want some help, I would be more than happy. Jsut shoot me a PM and we can bounce some thoughts. I already have some ideas that I'll shoot you later on today, but I like this mucho.
Updated with Kernels, please let me know if anything needs to be changed or updated.
as much as i hate to say this, unfortunately, even with this thread here, there will still and there will always still be new people who come in without any knowledge of this phone, and who don't care to search. they're too lazy to do any reading or flashing, and all they want is to have others hand them things on a GOLD (not silver) platter. just a heads up, so be prepared
Oh I know, been around since the G1, been annoyed since I learned the no nos lol, it comes with being on a forum. The plus is, we can have this available to send those said new guy/gals to this thread, and lock up there thread that they started. Other wise ya you're completely right.
