Hello everyone. I'm looking to root my son's Incredible 2, though I have a couple questions. First, what does "S-Off" mean? Also, what would be a ROM to use? Basically I would like a de-bloated stock set-up. (I want to start him out slow) I've owned a DX in the past and rooted, ROM'd, OC'd, etc to that. Currently I have a Bionic that I have rooted, plus I changed the system version to 893. But seeing how they were both Moto devices, it seems the HTC's are a bit different.....or maybe not? Just looking for a step in the right direction. Thank you in advance for any help, it's much appreciated.
First of all, look at menu>settings>about phone and see which version of Android OS you're running. if you're running 2.3.4 I don't think it's possible yet. I could be mistaken, but yeah. Look up that info and if it's 2.3.3 or older than you should be able to root it via Revolutionary. Just search for that in the forums and you should be on your way.
EDIT: Actually there seems to be a way to do it if you're on 2.3.4 by following the instructions here.
As far as a basic debloated stock ROM, I think that Skyraider and Virtuous would be good options.

Thank you chattguy, I will check out the OS when he's done messing around with the phone. Also, what does "S-Off" mean? I keep seeing that, even in your signature....just curious. Thanks again, I appreciate the help.
S-OFF is the process of removing the security lock on the bootloader, allowing you to gain root access to the file system of the phone. Your phone needs to be S-OFF in order to root.

No problem! Happy to help!
Skyraider roms are great. They're built on the stock sense roms released on the phone and given the 3.0 make over. Everything works flawlessly. Google "skyraider roms" to find them.

Guys, I'm lost. I search. I read (my eyes are bleeding), but unfortunatley I don't understand the terms, so it's all greek to me.
I have a stock EVO with 2.1 The only thing I have done is added Unrevoked3 to bring back my ability to use wifi tethering.
I would now like to get to 2.2. I've been saying "NO" to the OTA update because I know nobody has rooted 2.2 yet.
That said, it seems that because I haven't upgraded I can pull root, apply 2.2, keep root and keep wifi tethering.
I'm wondering if someone can provide step by step instructions on how to do this given a stock phone with only unrevoked3 on it so far.
I know - search... I'm so lost though. I want to be as close to stock as possible when I'm finished, and ideally I'd like to be able to go back and apply the stock OTA or HTC update if I want to, even if I lose root.
Can anyone help? Step by step?
Thank you!
If you rooted 2.1, then you can upgrade to 2.2.
There are probably 10 rooted ROMs in this forum now. Pick the one you like and flash it. Just be sure it says it is rooted.
You must be FULLY ROOTED for most roms on here. Unrevoked3 is not a full root.
Look into Simpleroot to get a full NAND unlock and root and then you can boot into the custom recovery and flash as you please.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=706411
Try using this method and flashing a custom rom should give you root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745420
Sounds like I'm hearing 2 things. Do I need to do a full root (BTW, I'm on an old mac, so I can't use simpleroot), or can I do as xHausx says and just install over the unrevoked3 "root"?
Recommendations on the ROM's closest to stock Froyo?
Will I be updating the radio at the same time?
Sorry - newbie
Go with xHausx's method then.
I'm running Baked Snack 1.3, it's a solid ROM. You'll be playing with many roms over the next couple weeks.
Here's a stock rooted 2.2

Closest to stock would be the UPDATED 8/7 HTC Froyo 2.2, *FINAL*, v3.26.651.6 (Rooted) DeOdexed RevE.1

Okay, so I am downloading the one Grouse recommended. At the same time I'm doing a backup via rom manager and have done a titanium backup already.
From here is it as easy as transferring the .zip file to my Sd card and then loading it via rom manager???
Again, remember I'm on unrevoked3 and everything else is stock.
Will I have to update any radios, etc?
Thanks so much - what a wonderful resource this site is.

this will not work. you need to have "full" root and be NAND unlocked to flash roms. Unrevoked3 is not full root as stated above. you may however try UnrevokedForever. just find the appropriate thread and follow the instructions if it is compatible with a mac, dont remember right off the top of my head.
Okay, t3project... explain the thread in post #4 here.
I'm learning here - not trying to be a smartass. It just looks like it WILL work... is this not the case?
Okay, so I've updated with no problems. I'm on Froyo now, I retained wifi tether. All is good with the world.
Except Pandora. I get the poor quality and the closing when nav or phone call.
Is there a fix for this yet? Also, now that I'm running a custom ROM I would assume I can't take any updates that google would push out. I can still update apps, but if this problem with Pandora is with the OS am I screwed?
Thanks,

I didn't use unrevoked so I am not really sure if the method I linked to earlier works or not, but it definitely wouldn't hurt to use one of the other methods just to make sure you have full root and the NAND unlocked.

You've got to use the search button man... Theres a fix for it out there somewhere
I've found the "fix" even before I tried to install 2.2. The problem is that I don't have a PC to work off of.
Can this editing of the file be done by transferring the file via BT to my mac, editing in text editor, and sending back via BT???
Thanks

Probably with a stock rooted rom but if you want to do other things such as overclock, uncap the fps, custom kernels and whatnot you'll need to be full nand unlocked.
Very excited!!! What can I do now? Not really sure what options I have. Please let me know the cool things I can do with my phone at this point. Thanks in advance!

Congratulations!
Questions:
1) How long did it take you?
2) What did you use? Unrevoked3? or UnrevokedForever?
Thanks...
I used unrevoked 3 and it took me about 10 minutes...I just did it here at work.
My girl just got her Evo yesterday, and I used the Unrevoked method. All I can say is, I wish it was that easy when I did mine.
OP: I'm glad you were able to get it rooted with no issues and all, but if you don't know what rooting does, then why did you do it? You can now wireless tether without additional charges from Sprint and use other apps that require superuser permissions (Shootme for screen shots, ROM manager, Titanium back-up, etc). When I rooted my girl's phone, I flashed the engineering SPL on it to be able to flash custom roms, boot animations and sounds, fonts, kernels, etc. You can flash your phone over to MetroPCS, make it work on only Verizon towers, move all apps to your SD card, uninstall all Sprint bloatware, and more.
I rooted my phone for the wireless tether capibilities and now am just wondering what else I just unlocked. I have been reading up on flashing custom roms but at this point im not confident in my capibilities...so I will keep doing more research. Can you get rid of the sprint bloatware with titanium backup?

Yes, you absolutely can. That's one of the first things I did to my girl's phone yesterday.
what is the best app for wireless tether?
Edit: Wireless tether up and running! This is great!
Question: What do I get out of flashing a kernel? Do I have to flash a custom ROM as well or is the kernel flash completly separate?
another question: can you do firmware updates when your rooted. I pretty sure you cant do the OTA when you are rooted but what about firmware?

Different kernels are tailored for different purposes. some are built for low power consumption/high battery life, others are tuned for full blast processing. it just depends on what your tastes are.
i personally have flashed my kernels and roms in pairs and separately. it just depends on what you're doing. i'm not real sure what the general consensus is here on the site though.
i highly recommend flashing a kernel. my phone really started shining once i did this. mine removed the FPS cap and made everything animate smoother, increased my battery life and generally made everything speedier.
good luck!!
I did not see that. Whats the difference? also I have software version 3.29.651.3

Sorry to bother, but my head is trashed learning how to do stuff on my new XOOM, and it brings a question about my DINC:
I want to tether with the XOOM using the tether for root apps available. I know I have to root the DINC to do so. Can I 'Root' without loading a Custom Rom (or any rom)? It may be sacrilege to say so on these boards, but I'm happy with Sense and I want XOOM to be my project platform, and want to leave the DINC as much as-is as possible.
Thanks, short answers are fine!
Yes, you can root with Unrevoked without flashing a new ROM.

Just make sure to uncheck "disable phone security" if you aren't going to be doing much with the INC, you don't need that. It will save you a hassle at a later date should something go wrong with your phone.
Then all you have to do is flash the rru, not the s-on file. Although if you want better battery life flashing a sense kernel would be a good idea but it requires s-off

Do you mean I don't have to go further than Step 7 and don't need to install the 'unRevoked Forever'? I don't need to gain 'S-Off' if I just want some root apps like Wireless Tether?
Thanks very much for the advice!

The downgrade kit includes both a Windows script and a Linux script. If your goal is to S-OFF your phone, this is the procedure you need to use if you already have GB 2.3.4 installed on the phone.
