The downgrade kit includes both a Windows script and a Linux script. If your goal is to S-OFF your phone, this is the procedure you need to use if you already have GB 2.3.4 installed on the phone.
oh dang well i wish i knew that earlier i woulve tried that but i just found what i was looking for. I really do appreciate your help and effort. thanks man

I've had my Evo for about 3 weeks now and am now wanting to root now that I see cyanogenmod is coming to Evo. I've rooted my Nexus and G1 with no problems but it seems the Evo is more difficult, what is the easiest way to root my Evo? And would someone be willing to help me with rooting it via IM or something similar?
There are tons of threads in the android development forum to show you how. Not to mention there was a one click root at some point if I am not mistaken, although I have no idea if it still works.

Yea, I've seen all of them and they all seem tedious compared to Nexus rooting. Which is the best method to go about rooting? I want to use Amon RA recovery if that helps. I'd really appreciate if someone could help me too.
Can anyone help?
Simple Root is 3 clicks & you're rooted & nand unlocked. Running win7 x64 & worked great for me.
I was reading up on it, do I need to uninstall HTC sync and the HTC drivers to get it to work??
I believe for unrevoked you need to remove those items ( the last time i checked at v2 ).
Versus Simple Root... I believe those are all required to get it to work.
What Version is your phone it would be much easier to know

Its 1.47.651.1 I'm going to try the 1 simple root method, but just have one question, am I supposed to have it on charge only or disk drive?
Charge-only
Awe crap, I forgot to put flash recovery, was I supposed to do that first or can I do that after step 1 or something???
Ok, so I got to part 4 and it just says starting part 2, thats it, it doesn't do anything more. Did I do something wrong, or....? Please help.
So could someone please help me???????
What method are u using? Try unrevoked 3, its very simple
*This was posted from my Evo 4G*
I had to do this after the using simple root method.

Thanks for replying guys, but I got it to work finally late last night. Anyways, I can't get wireless tether to work. It keeps force closing. I know I have root and everything because I was able to make a nand backup and I flashed Damagecontrol.
Im going to make this simple...since froyo..sniff...multitouch and tethering tried rooting and i did do th ota update btw so i guess thats my initial issue

So what is your question? Not to sound like an ass, but you sound like a 5 year old who just dropped his ice cream cone!
Have you searched for what you are looking for already? There is a lot of threads that deal with 2.2 and tethering.
From what I can decipher from your horrid grammar is that you installed the OTA over your root and now multitouch and tethering don't work.
For right now you're screwed. Should pay attention to the forums when it said to NOT apply the OTA until it was rooted. Oh well. Sorry.

I was thinking more along the lines of Capt. Kirk on the original Star Trek: ""Was rooted....did ota....now...my...phone...doesn't.....work" LOL
ya and just like alot of us he is waiting for scotty to beam us up...
I;m given her all I gots cpt...The froyo is pushing 2.2...anymore and she gonna blow...LOL!!!
You've been here over 2 years and don't know to avoid OTA's or even more pathetically how to ask a question?
not sure how you installed ota over a rooted device. maybe you only rooted with no nand unlock and stayed on stock rom. i rooted and nand unlocked when I first got the phone and went to custom roms, and this would give me an update error of the triangle with the ! in middle when ota updates were released and i tried to install update. don't make it simple, try to give more detail please. there is talk about droid multi touch keyboard not working on 2.2 and talk of no wireless tether working either. it's been said that certian roms with godzsons kernel will get you wifi router to work, but it changes your cam down to 3mp. I have htc ota froyo 2.2 (rooted) odex rom from netarchy and was able to find that a search for wireless tether come up a new version not on the market. search for wireless tether 2.0.5 pre7. If you still have root on your phone, that will give you wireless tether without messing up your cam. good luck
I know this has probably been asked before, and I know that it is probably in the forums but I don't have the actual time to fully search right now. Is it possible to downgrade to an earlier version of android on the Evo, then root? I know when 1.6 was released for the G1 and MyTouch, you could go back down to RC29, exploit the loop and then root with the new 2.1. Any answer, no matter how simple of one, would be greatly appreciated.

I'm really frustrated with my phone since the gingerbread upgrade and i have been looking for links to help me root my Evo, i've heard i need to downgrade or use gingerbreak so i'm confused. If anyone knows and takes the time to provide the links it will be greatly appreciate it.
IM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM DO I USE GINGER BREAK OR DO i need to downgrade FIRST PLZ HELP
Not ready yet.
I've been looking for a while about rooting the Evo 4G 2.3.3. It's not possible yet. You can try the downgrade and such, but it won't work (tried it). Just stay on this site and check the boards every few days. Once it's possible, thee will be a massive sound around the world of cheers and other....unsightly....sounds.
My friend isn't tech savvy so he had me try to root his on the ota update, so i tried gingerbreak and it sat there for at least 30 minutes not doing anything.
Root for GingerBread, EVO
I read something about revolutionary-0.4pre3, that was supposed to be a fix for that,,and also tried RUU_SuperSonic File to try and down grade, but no such luck, got a Boot Loader error,,,uuuugh,,,not happy right now--

Hello everyone. I'm looking to root my son's Incredible 2, though I have a couple questions. First, what does "S-Off" mean? Also, what would be a ROM to use? Basically I would like a de-bloated stock set-up. (I want to start him out slow) I've owned a DX in the past and rooted, ROM'd, OC'd, etc to that. Currently I have a Bionic that I have rooted, plus I changed the system version to 893. But seeing how they were both Moto devices, it seems the HTC's are a bit different.....or maybe not? Just looking for a step in the right direction. Thank you in advance for any help, it's much appreciated.
First of all, look at menu>settings>about phone and see which version of Android OS you're running. if you're running 2.3.4 I don't think it's possible yet. I could be mistaken, but yeah. Look up that info and if it's 2.3.3 or older than you should be able to root it via Revolutionary. Just search for that in the forums and you should be on your way.
EDIT: Actually there seems to be a way to do it if you're on 2.3.4 by following the instructions here.
As far as a basic debloated stock ROM, I think that Skyraider and Virtuous would be good options.

Thank you chattguy, I will check out the OS when he's done messing around with the phone. Also, what does "S-Off" mean? I keep seeing that, even in your signature....just curious. Thanks again, I appreciate the help.
S-OFF is the process of removing the security lock on the bootloader, allowing you to gain root access to the file system of the phone. Your phone needs to be S-OFF in order to root.

No problem! Happy to help!
Skyraider roms are great. They're built on the stock sense roms released on the phone and given the 3.0 make over. Everything works flawlessly. Google "skyraider roms" to find them.

Hi,
I got a Desire HD from a friend for free, and now i want to root it and install custom rom.
I have found alot of rooting guides, but there is a few things that confuses me a lot.
The phone has 2.3.5 software and sense 3.0. So i need to downgrade first, that is okay.
But this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
Does what i need to do, but i dont know what android version the phone came with, and my friend just bought it and used it, he is not interested in
phones and things like that so he doesnt know either.
So my problem is that i don't know what android version the phone came with, and if i can use the guide i just linked to
I found many different ways to root it, just got very confused about everything.
Maybe anyone can help me out?
I think your phone comes with 2.2

Ok, that guide will get you in troubles. After upgrading to gingerbread, reflashing a froyo RUU will probably get you stuck. The best is always to consider that your phone came with GB, just to avoid issues.
If you want to root you need to follow this:
http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=74
and if you need further help with some basics, just use the guide in my signature. If further help is needed, just let me know!!
Thanks
But im not sure i understand the steps in that guide?
What should i choose in the cmd? There was several things to choose..
EDIT:
I think i understand now, i only need to press 1 as that fixes everything?
The other one is for going back to stock right?
Then it shouldnt be a problem

That's it. Just press 1 (hack) and the session will guide you. It shouldn't take more than 5-6 mins. :fingers-crossed:
